QUOTE
This edition includes a bonus Q&A section from Melanie, exclusive to WHSmith. For the first time ever, Melanie C, aka Sporty Spice, tells her amazing life story in her own words and gives a full and honest account of what life was really like in the Spice Girls. I never told my story before because I wasn't ready. Now, finally, I am. 25 years ago, The Spice Girls, a girlband that began after answering an advert in the paper, released our first single. 'Wannabe' became a hit and from that moment, my life changed for ever. I was suddenly part of one of the biggest music groups in history, releasing hit after hit, performing to our wonderful fans and spreading the message of Girl Power to the world. It was everything I'd dreamed of growing up, and I've had some incredible times... The BRITs! The movie! Travelling the world playing iconic venues like Madison Square Garden, The O2, Wembley Stadium and The London 2012 Olympics!!! When you're a woman, though, that power can be easily taken away by those around you, whether by pressure, exhaustion, shaming, bullying or a constant feeling like you aren't enough. I have been known as Sporty Spice, Mel C, Melanie C or just plain old Melanie Chisholm, but what you will read within the pages of this book is who I truly am, and how I found peace with that after all these years. I have really enjoyed reminiscing and getting everything down on the page, and, though revisiting some of my darkest times was hard, I hope this book can be inspiring and empowering as well as entertaining and give you a bit of a laugh.

How exciting, Melanie is finally releasing an autobiography w00t.gif

Given that her relationship with all of the girls seems very good now, I'm not sure what we should expect when it comes to how she recounts particular moments... because we know she wasn't always on the best of terms with some of them. Even though the above description sounds promising, my gut feeling is that she'll mostly focus on the positives with the girls. I mean, I'd be very surprised if she goes into depth about 2016 when it was GEM vs. her, and they briefly weren't on great terms with each other. Anyway, we will see in September!

Wow awesome

Posted by: sammy01 26th January 2022, 05:41 PM

I think the release date is very telling.

Will be an interesting read.

Posted by: spiceboy 26th January 2022, 05:48 PM

amazing can't wait for this!!

Posted by: tommie 26th January 2022, 06:11 PM

Aww, too bad she didn't write this while she was in a fight with the girls as I'm sure it would've made for a more exciting reading. kink.gif

Finally !!

Very happy !!

Posted by: Chemistry 26th January 2022, 06:18 PM

Finally! This should be a good read, although I hope we get some new stories as I feel like I have heard her in so many podcasts over the years that we already know a lot about her background, Spice and solo time.

Great title as well. Suits the book and nice to refer back to one of her songs.

Posted by: vibe 26th January 2022, 06:22 PM

Ordered two copies 😍

Typical Melanie not announcing herself

Posted by: dromeda 26th January 2022, 06:54 PM

Great news!

Can we presume that her next album will be out around September?
I can see Melanie C part 2 and the book working well together.

Ooh will definitely be getting this !

Posted by: ThePensmith 27th January 2022, 09:44 AM

Just announced it on her Instagram:

I've pre-ordered a signed one from Waterstones - can't wait to read this!

Posted by: spiceboy 27th January 2022, 09:57 AM

So cannot wait to read this! I want a signed one but I wonder if she will do some signings for it rather than buying a pre signed one?

Posted by: schizo_spice 27th January 2022, 10:07 AM

wub.gif Will be really interesting to read her perspective of the Spice phenomenon and of course everything since.

Can’t wait wish it was being released sooner.

Posted by: McAndrew 27th January 2022, 12:01 PM

Hoping for insights into her career as a solo artist. I would find her dealings with record labels and execs really interesting. And how she has dealt with those stresses and strains, highs and lows.

Would prefer if it just had the one title - Who I Am is perfect. Doesn't need 'my story'.

Posted by: vibe 27th January 2022, 02:21 PM

I reckon she will do some signings.

Posted by: Voodoo 27th January 2022, 05:25 PM

Posted by: Mr.X 27th January 2022, 07:34 PM

Good for her. It is quite surprising she would do it but I guess any check is a check ah!

In a way, I doubt there will be super revealing stuff we dont already know so I will probably skip buying it unless there are some proper juicy stuff in it.

I hope she is successful with it though.

Posted by: sammy01 29th January 2022, 05:37 PM

It is defo going to be a different autobiography than the one we might have got say in 2005 or 2017. The girls have seemingly finally all come to a mutuak respect for each other and Melanie is earning nice money from the Spice Girls to rock the boat too much bow.

I feel like the most interesting bits will be her talking about her solo career and not having to worry about being warts and all about her split from Virgin.

I am more interested to read about these to be fair, don't get me wrong will be interesting to see a different perspective of Spice Girls but I've read that story several times in the other girls autobiographies, the David Sinclair one the countless interviews etc.

Posted by: Piers 30th January 2022, 09:49 PM

There are a number of things that I hope she addresses. Yes, the split from Virgin (and the general behind-the-scenes conflict behind the Reason album) could be really interesting. I've also wondered if she might address the subject of Goin Down. The rumor mill back in 1999 was that the song was about Robbie Williams. I haven't found much out there about Robbie and Goin Down since then, though. Has Mel herself ever explicitly said it's about Robbie? Anyway. Could be a juicy tidbit...if it honestly is about him.

Posted by: pippa 31st January 2022, 01:14 AM

If Mel provides the gritty ins and outs of the conflict behind Reason I would have more interest in purchasing the book.

An Evening with Melanie C

Fri 16 Sep 2022, 19:30, Barbican Hall, London

For the first time ever, Melanie C, aka Sporty Spice, will tell her amazing life story in her own words, live on stage at the Barbican. “I never told my story before because I wasn’t ready. Now I am.”

In conversation to celebrate the publication of her autobiography, Who I Am: My Story, Melanie will give a full and honest account of her life in pop group sensation, The Spice Girls. Beginning in her bedroom in the North-West of England dreaming of performing on stage, Melanie will consider the meteoric rise of The Spice Girls, from a collection of singers brought together by an ad in the paper to a worldwide sensation that would spread the message of Girl Power to stadiums around the world.

Taking in the incredible highs of becoming one of the world’s most recognisable popstars – playing at Wembley, conquering the BRITs, closing the Olympics – Melanie will also talk openly about the difficult lows.

This is the ultimate Spice Girls fan event, sharing Melanie’s incredible story of resilience, hope and how you can find your power.

Posted by: vibe 15th June 2022, 05:58 AM

I hate that cover as do most fans.
Hopefully her team change it like they did for stages!

I wouldn't go as far as to say I hate it but I feel like there surely must have been a better shot to use?

13 weeks to go!

Posted by: tommie 15th June 2022, 11:04 AM

I'm not a huge fan of the leaning towards the camera angle as it throws her proportions off and makes her head look huge, but hey ho, that's just me.

Posted by: sammy01 15th June 2022, 01:01 PM

Terrible cover, what is she wearing, why is she doing a sat on the loo pose, why is her hair slightly blonde so she looks nothing like the Melanie C most people recognise?

Any way hope the content is better than the cover. Everything about this book so far feels like Mel doesn't really want to do it.

Posted by: vibe 15th June 2022, 03:26 PM

She looks bored in the picture, which is such a bad USP

Posted by: sammy01 15th June 2022, 03:50 PM

Normally with something like this all the cover and profile pics on social media would change to the pic and release date. I really think she didn't want to do this book till she was say 60 and could be totally honest. This feels like it will be watered down coming out now.

Posted by: tommie 15th June 2022, 04:05 PM

Calm down, I doubt she was forced to do it because she was broke. Granted, her management probably pushed her to put one one out, but ultimately I don't doubt it was anyone but her decision.

Emma is notorious for not remembering any detail. Hers would be very much 'Me and the girls were pissed in some country, maybe France or Australia, when we were promoting Holler off our first album Spice. Any way Mel B cut the label out my baby doll dress and my boobs fell out in rehersals as she cut the fabric too, or was it Mel C, maybe it was Spain'

Posted by: Chemistry 22nd June 2022, 04:33 AM

Yikes.. the US title. I can understand why the try to use the Spice reference as much as possible but still "my life as as Spice Girl"? I think the book is about a lot more things.

Posted by: McAndrew 22nd June 2022, 05:04 AM

Haha. It's looks like a committee of people took about 30 seconds to come up with that title.

"The Sporty One"? Oof

Posted by: spiceboy 22nd June 2022, 11:07 AM

At least it should help boost a few more sales as collectors will buy both for the difference in title / cover. I would have done back when I was collecting.

I'm sure lunch was provided during said meeting, and took longer to get through than coming up with the title.

This is scarily accurate!

Posted by: spiceboy 22nd June 2022, 07:36 PM

I don’t see anything wrong with the title to be honest 🤷‍♂️ if anything it would probably be better over here too. I do prefer Who I Am though I love how much she clearly loves that song (rightfully so it’s fantastic)

Posted by: Mr.X 22nd June 2022, 09:26 PM

I dont have an issue with The Sporty One to be honest, as most people will be interested in her perspective of her life which revolves around a lot on her being Sporty, even if she spent 20 years trying to avoid that lol

About Who I Am, it is a great song, a very Melanie C one and it suits her well too. Either are fine in my opinion. The problem is that damn cover which is just not very nice lol

Why if the back photo is great and those amazing inside pictures, she chose to use that photo to launch the book? 😂

I really hope she shares some spicy info and throws some shade.

This book seems very much to be aimed at Spice Girls fans and as her as Sporty Spice rather than Mel C. It is the right way to go tbh to flog more copies. No one bar her very small hardcore fans really cares about her solo battles with Virgin or her indie label. The masses want juicy Spice Girls gossip.

Posted by: tommie 23rd August 2022, 03:17 PM

I'm really curious how candid she'll dare to be especially after seeing Geri briefly falling out with Mel B when she talked too much.

Posted by: -Jay- 23rd August 2022, 06:17 PM

I really can't wait to read it!

Spice Girls stories will of course take up a sizeable chunk of it, but ultimately this is not a Spice Girls group book, it's a book about Melanie C. I would hope the book will have a good balance of stories from throughout her career. Her solo career is a particularly major part of her life, so I'll be disappointed if she glosses over particular aspects of it - her time with Virgin and her transition to becoming an independent artist is certainly of interest to me!

A general theme of this book is her journey towards self acceptance, and all the moments she's experienced over the years will have had significant impact on her growth as a person, certainly her solo career.

According to Amazon her book will be 432 pages long, which is a lot longer than Mel B's recent autobiography (270 pages). So I'm hopeful that this indicates Melanie has gone into great depth about an array of subjects.

Anyway, we'll find out in over 3 weeks time!

I agree with every word! I of course am interested to see her side of the spice girls story (especially if she is a bit more honest than the other girls perhaps were) but I already know the general story I am far more interested to learn about her solo stuff and how she felt about the different eras!

It's funny. Most of us will remember the very negative reaction to the initial Stages CD cover which was eventually changed. Sometimes I wonder what the people involved in these projects see in particular pictures. I wouldn't have looked at the image used for the front book cover and thought "yeah, that's absolutely the one".

I imagine at the very least yes these shows, also hope she could get one of the bigger shows if they are on at the min like Graham Norton (is that showing at the min?). The book publishers should be able to secure bigger promo slots for her like Emma got with MHP. If this is case that is why I think promoting a Greatest Hits alongside it (also titled Who I Am) would be a great promo opportunity.

Actually wouldnt mind her doing a Greatest Hits type of release with a couple new tracks she worked on this year, but I think it will clash too much with Spiceworld25 so I dont really see it happening...

The book’s release presumably coinciding with Spiceworld 25 preorders isn’t really an issue, but Melanie C promoting a Greatest Hits album at the same time as Spiceworld 25 would be a major clash in interests and a bit awkward, so I think that’s the point Mr.X was making.

Posted by: vibe 2nd September 2022, 06:21 AM

A major clash of interests, really no one would really care!!

MC should have released a best of along with the book!!

I also don’t think it would have been a major clash tbh.

Sobbbbb at Jay thinking there will be some big promo schedule clash of SW25 and Who I am. Those pre-programmed tweets and insta posts will not clash #oh

Also Mel C was playing solo shows on the off days of the 2007 tour, Emma released an album 6 weeks before the 2019 tour.

They really don't care or see any group project as their sole focus.

Point out where I said that?

All music attention, in terms of selling products on CD/Vinyl/Cassette, is going to be focused on Spiceworld 25. That's literally what's about to happen.

It would be awkward scheduling to have a Melanie C Greatest Hits album released in close proximity to the Spiceworld 25 album. Whereas an autobiography book coinciding with Spiceworld 25 isn't so much a conflict, in fact they will compliment each other - Melanie plugging her book which is to a significant extent about Spice Girls, and a Spice Girls reissued album. It goes hand in hand. She'd surely want her Greatest Hits to stand on its own, not be overshadowed by a Spice Girls anniversary?

I mean goodness, we've had enough discussions over the years about how Hot and Forever being out within a month of each other was bad timing.

This is such a moot discussion anyway considering a Melanie C Greatest Hits album isn't happening, so I don't know why there's any need for scoffing and sarcasm.

The book will cover plenty of Spicy happenings and stuff we don’t know or we forgot about it. Let’s put it like that - and sign my words - some blog / website already read the book for review purposes.. I now can see her promoting the book on TV to talk about certain things It perfectly matches the SW25 celebrations - and I’m glad it’s going to be Spice only-related time (I’m all for solo music, but Spice and Spice World are HERSTORY and come first).

OT: Sooner or later, we’re getting a GH. A rumor: she re-recorded some of her songs with other artists (Natalie Imbruglia being one of them). Again, a rumor (it makes sense though if we think about the new version of WYG).

So sad how in 2000 she was on top career wise with two solo number 1s and a successful multi platinum album yet she wasn’t happy personally. Just shows how success can have a price attached.

I wonder if she’ll divulge on recording most of Forever alone? Would be interesting to hear her thoughts on that. A very unhappy time I’m sure.

I definitely hope that she'll elaborate on the Forever era - I'm sure she will given that she was having such a difficult time personally at that moment, so to read some more context about the recording / promotion would be interesting.

She’s a lovely dominatrix. I bet she would. That’s also girl power: men are just for pleasure.

I think that she would go “safe”, but I don’t think she would skip the juicy stuff. I love the videos where she basically shades Geri for being bossy and wanting to have the last words “even when she wasn’t right”. Love the classy shady Emma of the Forever era. And I’m sure she’s got much more to say.

I might be wrong, but I’m sure if they were to write an autobiography at the same time right now, knowing that “sales matter”, this would be how it’d go in terms of juiciness, from juicier to bland:

1. Mel B
2. Victoria
3. Emma
4. Mel C
5. Geri

Posted by: Mr.X 14th September 2022, 01:37 PM

hhhmmmm... I would go:

1. Mel B
2. Emma
3. Victoria
4. Mel C
5. Geri

Vicky has mellowed even more with age, so I highly doubt she would be too controversial. Although I would like to see a new biog from her, actually.

Yeah, Vicky and Emma are quite similar, but maybe.. maybe Emma wins when it comes to being naughty and cheeky.

Melanie C is probably the one who remembers things more clearly. I love how Emma forgot about single releases, videos, tours and stuff that happened not a long time ago. LOL

Posted by: -Jay- 14th September 2022, 03:27 PM

I don’t remember Mel B’s recent autobiography being particularly juicy in terms of the Spice Girls! Though the overwhelming focus of that book was the men who’ve been in her life and how she was treated by them, so I suppose that book’s remit wasn’t to be overly interesting about the Spice Girls.

Personally I think Emma is way too conscious of her image as “nice Spice” to be too honest or controversial with an autobiography. I could imagine a book of hers being quite a fluffy read that wouldn’t offend, so she’d swerve some truths to achieve that image. Though I’d still like her to do one.

I doubt a new Victoria autobiography would be any more interesting than her 2001 book tbh, probably less so considering she wasn’t afraid of coming across as a tabloid celebrity at that stage. She’s above that now & way too focused on how Brand Beckham is perceived for her to truly open up and be honest about her life, imo.

Geri - a total enigma, who knows what tone a new book by her would take?

So honestly… I think Melanie C’s book has the best potential to be frank about things.

QUOTE(Elizabeth Day)
I am so honoured to welcome my first ever Spice Girl to How To Fail! Today Melanie Chisholm - the artist formerly known as Mel C or even Sporty Spice - joins me in what is arguably her most open interview yet.

She tells me about the impact of her parents' divorce, the extreme lengths of her people-pleasing as one of the most famous stars of the 1990s and her own struggles with her body. She talks bravely about the toxic impact of media attention on her weight, and how she developed an eating disorder. This led her into a very dark mental space where she felt dishonest about the image she was portraying to the outside world. Melanie also opens up about a sexual assault she endured while on tour in Turkey and her thoughts of suicide at her lowest points.

And yet the extraordinary thing about Melanie is her resilience and her enduring gentleness. She is SO lovely, and we also have laugh-out-loud moments, including an unforgettable karaoke anecdote involving her and Baby Spice surprising some unsuspecting punters...

What. A. Woman.

I absolutely hate podcasts they are so restrictive. As a deaf person I struggle to follow videos where I can lip-read through the screen nevermind a blank screen with a voice, and they never ever provide subtitles. Yet in that short snippet they are able to.

I'd bet on it being Melanie C and Victoria. Victoria's music career suggests she's more affected by failure than the other two. And Melanie C clearly wasn't feeling it at all.

Not that I personally view Forever as a failure - it did great by the standards of any other UK artists at the time.

I imagine Victoria would've been itching to get her solo album together too.

Emma and Mel B would have continued for sure, both have said so in the past, which is funny because they were the ONLY girls who had their own solo music out at the time or were on the verge of releasing (Bunton's album came in April 2001 so by the time the group decided to quit, she was pretty much done with recording the album).

It really saddens me they didnt carry on with the group at the time. Of course, Mel C had her reasons but it always feels so sad to me, specially cos they had great potential as a foursome still... They just got some of the major calls wrong and were'nt really united as a group anymore... Somehow their spark got lost in 1999 which was a shame...

Victoria and Mel C. Emma and Mel B wanted to continue promoting Forever but the other two decided that they didn’t want to continue anymore. This was Xmas 2000 I think. That’s why a few months or so, Mel C said in an interview that she was not a spice girl anymore and the news was everywhere. Also, it was an unfortunate timing because Emma was promoting her single by then so she had to say Mel C’s words were taken out of context.

Posted by: Mr.X 15th September 2022, 03:35 PM

Im listening to the audiobook and gotta say that it is really interesting. In a way, Mel C is much more interested in discussing the process of recording and making music than the others' own books, so it gives you a bit more insight into how things happened, how and where they were recorded, etc.

Never knew that they actually had recorded most of the album with Absolute, Matt & Biff and Elliott before signing to Virgin. I knew they are a couple of tracks with Matt & Biff and Elliott but always thought that Absolute came after! The info on recording sessions where great, and it is so clear they wanted to write and sing from their own perspective as women in the music business... amazing insights really!

I skipped the early chapters of her personal life, as not quite interested in that from Melanie and more focused on what happened since she joined the group, but maybe one day I will dive in lol

I think if you’ve not started to read/listen to the book & you want to remain spoiler free, it might be best to avoid this topic for a while. I’m guessing that there’ll be a lot to discuss and using spoiler tags for everything would be excessive.

I’ll be avoiding this topic until I’ve finished reading! My signed book arrived today by the way cheer.gif But I decided to be wild and also order an unsigned copy! laugh.gif That’ll arrive later. I’ll read the unsigned version, and keep my signed copy nice and untouched.

I enjoyed the book. She was very complimentary about Geri throughout and credited her for being the main writer of Stop, Viva Forever and Too Much.

The recording of Forever sounded even worse than I expected. She actually told their manager Nancy to schedule her recording sessions alone as she didn’t want to see the other 3. She only did the album as she feared a backlash from the press and fans if she left.

I thought it was quite sad when she said she and the others couldn’t remember much of 1997 and 98 at all.

I just picked up my copy from Asda and haven't read it yet but what strikes me is how success motivated she is. The blurb on the inside of the back mentions NS sales and Melanie C being top 10 and the pics inside ignore her less successful eras. No mention of setting up her own label on that blurb either.
I've always felt it but I think this book will confirm to me charts and sales are very important to Mel (not a bad thing) but I feel that is what actually holds her back from doing new Spice music, where it might chart or what it might sell.

For sure. Whilst I think this is not just a Mel C issue though. Emma and Mel B would be up for it but I think both Mel and Geri fear 'failure' and damaging their legacy after their attempts in 2000, 2007 and 2016 were trashed in the way they were...

It is sad though, specially as nowadays there is much more freedom in not charting at #1 or selling millions because the way the charts and sales work are so very different from what they were in the 90s.

I wish they would give it a go though... Mel seemed a bit more open to it last year, but I fear they think their time has passed...

I personally think it wouldn’t work. Their voices are too different in strength and style. While Melanie C, Emma, and Mel B kinda complement each other (and they’re probably more versatile when it comes to music genres), Geri’s voice doesn’t. Also, what kind of music? The only one that would work for all 4 would be British pop or something like that (Adele, Lewis Capaldi and that type of adult pop). I loved Holler 2019, and in some ways that was a new song for many people, but Geri didn’t sing and she looked totally uncomfortable! If it has to be new music, I think all 4 need their chance to shine with solo, chorus and/or ad-libs.

By the way, to get back on topic, living for the launch pics on her IG. Glad to see her friends there.

I absolutely hate podcasts they are so restrictive. As a deaf person I struggle to follow videos where I can lip-read through the screen nevermind a blank screen with a voice, and they never ever provide subtitles. Yet in that short snippet they are able to.

Yet another barrier for deaf people, shame as the interview sounds amazing.

I’m loving the narrated book. She’s so engaging.

Love also the fact she took her time to apologize for the S*n “incident”. That Dan Wootton is evil (God bless Caroline Flack).

Love a lot the social, cultural, and political references. And the fact she shares her knowledge of the music scene through the years.

She (and the editor) did a great job.

Posted by: spiceboy 18th September 2022, 08:53 AM

It is so sad to read how she felt during the Forever era I am not surprised she found it incredibly hard to go back.

It's very interesting that so far she has barely mentioned Emma at all, in fact Geri is the Spice Girl she talks the most about then Mel B then Victoria.

Posted by: Mr.X 18th September 2022, 11:56 AM

I was also surprised about the Bunton-less focus, but she does speak the most about Emma when talking about singing/recording and Geri has the writer/ideas person.

Posted by: sammy01 18th September 2022, 04:03 PM

Honestly they need a biopic but that really is mainly about the time before Wannabe's release. It would be film gold, the chaos, the ridiculousness of some of it. It could be soundtracked by the Spice songs.

I really like this interview!

Posted by: spiceboy 18th September 2022, 07:14 PM

I finished the book today. Was quite heavy going I thought I obviously knew of her struggles but she talks very explicitly about them and I really felt for her. It also seems like the other girls were not always particularly nice to her at times on top of the struggles she was dealing with, I totally understood why she didn’t want to go back in a way I never have before.

For many years I have wished and wished that Geri never left or that they continued as a 4 piece with an album in 1998 onwards but after reading her book I am actually kind of glad they didn’t, I question whether we would still have her around if they did!

My slight disappointment about the book is I felt like she skimmed over her solo career really but I guess the spice girls story sells books far more.

Posted by: spiceboy 18th September 2022, 07:16 PM

Was also very interesting that she gave lower sales for most things than we heard previously. The record label have confirmed 23 million for Spice but she said 19 million. Also they confirmed 3.5 million of Northern Star but she said 2.5 million.

Interestingly she said wannabe has sold 15 million copies which we’ve never heard before. Last we knew it was on 7 million. She also said 3 million for say you’ll be there and 500,000 for Reason (which many musician including herself would give her left eye for now lol). Then that Beautiful Intentions outsold Reason so it’s on over half a million too. She then said Melanie C was her most successful record since Beautiful Intentions (I presume she meant UK) so guessing that has outsold This Time, The Sea, Stages and Version of me?

She also makes the claim of 23 million solo records (including duets)… I do wonder where exactly lol. When you’re gone must be a pretty big worldwide seller if she can claim that much yet takes a million off the sales of her solo debut…

Posted by: Mr.X 18th September 2022, 07:43 PM

Yeah her stats and numbers seem to be a mess... I was shocked when she said the 15million Wannabe figure but I wouldnt be surprised as it continues to be such a popular song nowadays, and we havent really had an official worlwide figure since the 90s, so I was happy lol

But her own sales and the group sales when it comes to the albums and other songs seem really low, and they dont match the official sales of any, so Im not sure I would trust her lol...

So I chose to believe only the higher figures:

Spice: 31million
Northern Star: 3.5million
Wannabe: 15million

At first I thought she was referring to sales up to 2000 for northern star and thought yes that’s possible and then another million after that as she promoted it for a few years but then she kept repeating 2.5 million and I was all huh? She also said the 14 million for a Spiceworld we have all said for a few years which was interesting.

Also they said 4 million for Northern Star in the Blood Brothers programme!!! Like come on woman make your mind up!

In which case not a cats chance in hell she sold 20+ million solo records laugh.gif I was thinking when they said it that perhaps Northern Star had inched it way towards the 5 million mark and was a quarter of the sales then when you're gone, Never be the same, I turn to you and First day of my life all selling approx 2+ million each but clearly not laugh.gif blink.gif

It’s the same that happened with the Spice Girls: 100m records sold
I mean it’s not the precise amount. WYG and ITTY should be her biggest sellers worldwide.

Posted by: spiceboy 19th September 2022, 10:38 AM

She said in her book I turn to you was her biggest worldwide seller but interestingly NBTSA has the most certifications out of all her singles.

I guess though there will be lots of countries where songs were released and sold a few thousand but not enough to be certified, for example she released a lot of singles which charted in Germany but didn’t certify Gold (their lowest cert) so she could have sold anywhere up to 199k there. In the U.K. we know more precise sales range from 3k up to 100k for her uncertified sales it’s bound to be the same in other countries.

The Istanbul “incident”. Speechless.

Posted by: sammy01 19th September 2022, 08:08 PM

Reading the book as far as I have I would say Mel C is the most savvy these days of all the Spice Girls. I think she is the one most aware of how things come across, I wouldn't say it makes her false but just very good at playing the game these days.

Like if all were asked the same contriversial question, Geri would say what she thinks (which sadly these days is an upper class mentality behind it) even if it comes across badly. Emma would just avoid wishing not to offend anyone. Mel B would say something she thought clever but wasn't thought through. Where as Mel C's answer I feel would be the correct or 'right' answer even if that isn't exactly how she 100% feels but she knows how to play the game.

It is such a contrast to the early 2000's Mel C who would be blunt to the point of rude and very opinionated.

Posted by: pippa 19th September 2022, 11:19 PM

Posted by: Sideout 19th September 2022, 11:24 PM

Victoria would be a fool not to do it. Imagine if she didn't take part in the Olympics ceremony. It wouldn't have been the same.

Posted by: sammy01 20th September 2022, 10:06 AM

After reading most of it now my review of it is -

The detail is great in a lot of parts and it is good to get some insight into things that have been very vague over the years.

I'm glad she admits This Time isn't great and was rushed and VOM was done on a very tight budget. You can tell on both records and it was obvious and welcome what the cash injection from SW19 did for Melanie C the album.

You can tell there are some issues we will never get the proper details about like the failed 2016 reunion. Though it was refreshing to see her say there was almost a reunion in 2014. I feel like I've said that many times and people are dubious but an arena tour was pretty much sorted until it broke down.

She could have easily cut out about 40 pages if she didn't go on a tangent for 3 pages at a time to then finish each time with 'but that is for later'. It was slightly confusing at times as the tangent would have very little to do with the actual story being told.

I'm surprised she was so brief about the sexual assualt before Istanbul, I expected that to be explored more when I had read it was part of the book.

Mel b features a lot, it is obvious she is closest with Mel B these days.

I would say I still think this book isn't the full truth on things and I think Mel C at 70 and way after any potential for Spice Girls reunions had gone would write a much more explosive book, which she still might. This very much didn't rock the boat like I feel a Mel C autobiography might do, imagine had she released one in 2002!

Following today's promo, the book gets a new peak in Amazon's main book chart:

Posted by: -Jay- 21st September 2022, 04:16 AM

The book has some little errors:

- “we shot the video for our second single, “Say You’ll Be There” in the Mojave Desert in September 1997” (although earlier in the book it correctly says the single was released on 14th October 1996)
- “I was possibly at my thinnest when we shot [Spiceworld the Movie] in the Summer of 1998” (despite correctly saying on the previous page that the movie was released in December 1997)

I suppose unless the proof reader was a fan they’d maybe overlook wrong years, but that’s a bit sloppy. Melanie C herself can get them wrong; in that podcast interview from yesterday she said Wannabe was released in Summer 1997.

There’s a couple of of spelling errors at least (I recall one - “Banarama”) and towards the start of the book “Mum and Dad” is written rather than “Mum and Den” (“Dad” didn’t make sense in context).

I wonder if in the audio book she said all the above without picking up on them being errors?

Not an error but a curiosity - she says as a child she wrote “Melanie C Superstar” on school books for years. Had she really already thought of going by Melanie C as her stage name many years before it was a necessity because of Mel B? thinking.gif I mean I’ll take her word for it!

~~~
I’m still not close to finishing, I’m only starting chapter 12 now. I’m actually a little surprised by just how Spice Girls heavy the book is. I wasn’t necessarily expecting to be past the half way point and for the book to still only have got as far as events in 1998. I’m happy to read all her Spice Girls stories though. I feel like she’s shared details that I don’t recall the previous three girls talking about in their autobiographies. Particularly regarding the process of recording the albums. Though it has been years since I’ve read them so I could be misremembering.
One part of this book did make me a bit thinking.gif and that was when she recounted the Brits 96 incident, but only from her perspective of being too drunk to really remember it clearly & therefore she was kind of vague. I would have liked some context explaining just why Geri, Mel B & Simon were so furious, rather than Melanie sharing her bewilderment over it years later. Surely she could have asked Geri, Mel B or Victoria about their memories of this event to help provide this story with some more context. It doesn’t seem like her saying “f off” at Victoria was the sole reason. I feel like Melanie held back from giving the full story, which is kind of a shame when she’s clear that this was a pivotal moment. I mean, was she really disorderly at the Brits, did she say anything worse? It seems overblown for her to have received the threat of being kicked out of the band just for saying “f*** off”. Was there a problem with it being specifically aimed at Victoria, if so, why? The funny thing is that we actually have video footage of Emma saying “f*** off” to Mel B on the set of the Impulse commercial shoot, I assume there was no repercussions for that!
I listened to this yesterday. For the most part I enjoyed it because Melanie always gives really articulate answers, I could listen to her speak for hours honestly. However I do feel that this podcast maybe dwelled just a bit too much on “the bad bits”, like the line of questioning kind of pushed and pushed for her to get emotional.
I know this autobiography goes into her mental health issues and in turn that invites interviewers to ask her more about it, but I’m a little worried about it taking its toll? It must be draining. She ends up crying in this interview, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, it’s more than understandable, but it seems like going over her past traumas isn’t so healthy. I hope it doesn’t get too much for her. I think sharing her story in her book is one thing, but having to go over and over it in interviews - and these interviewers are not therapists… I don’t know… it made me a little uncomfortable. Maybe it’s my overreaction. I just hope it’s not too distressing for her.
It feels very self written as sometimes it feels as if she is rambling on a bit about something not related at all that I assume would be cut or shortened if ghost written.
The childhood stuff is defo the least interesting, it can basically be summed up as 'I was a determined child who wasn't well off'.
I listened to the audiobook and I'm glad I did. I found it all really absorbing, thanks to Melanie's narration. She's very warm and sincere (and funny!).
She has been brave to discuss all the hardships and I appreciate that.
I loved hearing about her solo career, her approach to creating each album, dealing with limitations of self publishing and negotiating with affiliates. She's so clued up on it all.
I'd say the editor has let her down in a few places. I'm sure Melanie knows the facts, but there are human errors, which an editor should catch.
Posted by: dancinqueen 21st September 2022, 07:28 AM
I understand your point of views.
But I’m here for the content. And the story she tells is interesting.
Her childhood memories and stories are amazing. As I’m not from where she came from, I find that world totally different from mine. It’s also nice to hear someone bring so proud of their working class background - in a world where people pretend to be who they are not.
It’s a different approach to autobiographies. Not the common one. And it works perfectly, especially with the audiobook.
Wow I cannot believe you see it that way. How many children, and especially in the 70's, were a child of divorce? Plus then had their father sell their childhood home and vanish for a year to travel the world, then after that decide to live abroad. Meanwhile mother was touring and leaving her with an unsuitable child minder resulting in her being left outside in the freezing cold and weeing herself as she could not go to the toilet, essentially child neglect.
It sounds like she had the toughest upbringing out of the 5 of them and you can see how early trauma plays a part in her future issues.
I know this autobiography goes into her mental health issues and in turn that invites interviewers to ask her more about it, but I’m a little worried about it taking its toll? It must be draining. She ends up crying in this interview, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, it’s more than understandable, but it seems like going over her past traumas isn’t so healthy. I hope it doesn’t get too much for her. I think sharing her story in her book is one thing, but having to go over and over it in interviews - and these interviewers are not therapists… I don’t know… it made me a little uncomfortable. Maybe it’s my overreaction. I just hope it’s not too distressing for her.
Ive started to stay away from interviews this week as some of them really get dark and whilst I appreciate her being so open and thorough, it really doesnt sit well with me that the press is once again pushing this to go so dark in every single interview. For a fan it has been incredibly triggering and exhausting, and I bet it takes a toll on her so I hope she is ok because this doesn't really sit well with me at all...
The book itself is a revelation in many ways so I will focus on that. Im glad she gave us a bit of insights into the Spice story we didn't know, and a lot of that revolves around her own trauma and I will focus on the book itself.
This is what pisses me off about mostly the UK press, they basically push you as far as they go so they can get clicks and drama. It's revolting. Like, the information is in the book, it doesnt need to be revived so horribly cruelly on TV for your listeners to cry and your ratings to go up... urgh...
Bless her heart.gif
Another mistake:
“I went home to Liverpool for Christmas 1999 […] Northern Star hadn’t set the world alight. It had charted at four in the albums charts […] Not a flop, not a resounding success either.”
At that point in time it had gone no higher than #10. It didn’t reach its peak of #4 until August 2000, at which point it was considered to be a resounding success…
Well done to the editor(?) for making her highest charting album peak come across as being disappointing lol. drama.gif
It’s weird because only three pages before this, it more accurately describes the album as going Top 10 in October 1999 and then says how Never Be the Same Again pushed it up to #5 in March 2000, which is also true.
Am I being picky, maybe, but they’re basic mistakes and I think details like this should have been fact checked before going to print. Takes less than a minute to look up Northern Star’s chart run on Official Charts. I’m surprised there’s more mistakes in Melanie C’s book than there were in the previous girls’ autobiographies.
~~~~~

Edit: I’ve read further and there’s certainly some selectivity and revisionism when it comes to her recalling the events of 1999 re: the Spice Girls. Maybe it suited the narrative of this part of the book better to not mention that the Spice Girls did anything together in 1999, but that’s far from the truth! The Christmas 1999 tour isn’t mentioned at all, and it’s implied that she hadn’t started work on Forever by Christmas 99. However we know they began that in August 99. I feel like all of this would have been notable to mention in regards to her reticence to going back to work with the Spice Girls?

Spice Girls stuff that was mentioned from the 1994 auditions right through to the 1998 Wembley shows was very specific and accurate. While there were mistakes like saying something happened in 1998 instead of 1997, at least particular events being described is actually what had happened. So I’m surprised that 1999 hasn’t had the same approach.

Edit 2: I just wanted to make it clear that my above qualms are with certain factual inaccuracies. All of that is far removed from everything she writes about her mental health and other struggles, which are very harrowing and I really admire her honesty and bravery in these parts. Obviously this aspect of the book is very important and it does overshadow inaccuracies about dates. I don’t want to seem like I’m trashing the book as a whole!

Maybe she got confused with the single of the same name, as it charted at #4 at the time.

Wow I cannot believe you see it that way. How many children, and especially in the 70's, were a child of divorce? Plus then had their father sell their childhood home and vanish for a year to travel the world, then after that decide to live abroad. Meanwhile mother was touring and leaving her with an unsuitable child minder resulting in her being left outside in the freezing cold and weeing herself as she could not go to the toilet, essentially child neglect.

It sounds like she had the toughest upbringing out of the 5 of them and you can see how early trauma plays a part in her future issues.

I think tbh in the 60s and 70s if you were poor or working class it was tough as a child growing up. My mum's dad died of cancer as did her sister and she was in care for a couple of years. My dad's parents split when he was young and he bounced between them depending on when his dad was away with the army or not.

I think if you ask a lot of people late 40s to late 50s who were relatively poor that growing up was tough they would agree. Dads often away with work for long periods, outside toilets, sexual and physical abuse rife. Not to downplay Melanie's childhood but I didn't see it as too much out of the ordinary for that time.

On a different note her promo has been better than when she releases an album tbh.

Posted by: -Jay- 25th September 2022, 08:48 AM

In the chapter I’m currently reading, Melanie C mentions an interview with Frank Skinner (which aired on 20th November 2000) where she said “I’ve been luckier since I left… well, since I’ve been doing my own thing.”. She describes how the press has a field day with this slip of the tongue that seemed to imply that she had left the Spice Girls. She writes that the other girls were furious with her over this.

This is where it gets a bit confusing - she explains that this incident coincided with “Emma releasing her solo record”… but obviously we know that Emma didn’t start promoting her album until March 2001.

I searched for articles, and it seems to me that Melanie has combined two separate incidents into one memory? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1210127.stm - this is from March 2001, and Melanie supposedly said this about the Spice Girls:

"I don't intend to do any more work with the Spice Girls. Really, I've not been comfortable being in the Spice Girls for probably the last two years. It doesn't really feel that natural to me any more. I've grown up and I just feel that I want to do things my own way and not compromise."

Could this be what the other girls were allegedly furious about, rather than her November 2000 comment?

Melanie writes in her book that she was persuaded to call the show CD:UK, during an Emma appearance, to reassure fans that the girls weren’t splitting up. I couldn’t find the footage, but I did find a transcript - if you select March 2001 and search CD:UK on the page: http://www.spicenews.com/html/archives.html - Also if you browse through the rest of the March 2001 page, there’s actually quite a few separate news updates regarding what Melanie said. I’d totally forgotten about all of this tbh. It’s a bit wild how they all went into damage control at this point in time, even though the group was clearly over with! Why were they so bothered?

So anyway, yeah, she’s definitely mixed up two different moments and combined them in her book. Not only that, but it also implies that it happened before they released Forever!

Melanie says in the book that her Frank Skinner comment resulted in a meeting with the other girls. She says that they decided they’d never officially split up, but notes that “relations were hostile” and “hit a real low in November”. Then she goes on to talk about Forever being released, the launch party, and the VMAs performance. But in reality, all of that happened before the Frank Skinner interview and obviously way before the March 2001 drama.

This is all incredibly jumbled up!!

I suppose it shows that her memories of this entire period in her life are hazy and mixed up. I assume that anyone else involved in the creation of this book just took her word for it, and didn’t realise that her recollections are not quite how things happened, chronologically.

Oh well! kink.gif

I think it's because it was only a few months after Forever was released, they still had a greatest hits collection they owed to the label and surely honestly didn't know the future of the group (even if they all felt it was a closed chapter). While the greatest hits wouldn't happen until 2007, that could've, by all accounts, have happened earlier if the label would have felt like it. Plus she did then say that they agreed to never officially to split up, so..

Maybe because both Emma & Victoria still hadn't released their debut solo albums, and for promotion's sake it was better to market them as active Spice Girls (rather than former members).

She actually didn't do any signings (apart from the one in Ireland yesterday, which didn't count for the book's UK sales obviously).

Let's also not forget these are just physical sales. That figure doesn't include e-book and audiobook sales.

It’s just interesting to me that essentially everything she describes from 1999 and 2000… isn’t particularly close to the reality of the situation, sort of vaguely close if you completely disregard specific details and timings, whereas her recollections of 94-98 events actually are really strong.

Not trying to be messy with what I’m about to ask, but does anyone have the book chart data for how Emma’s You Got This & Mel B Brutally Honest did? All I can find is #6 for Emma and “Top 5” for Mel B, but no sales. And also not sure if those stats for Emma and Mel B were specifically the Hardback chart like Melanie C? (Edit: Just seen all this was already asked and answered, oops)

I’m also a bit confused by the chart in terms of how many days it counts sales for. I looked back and Emma’s book also came out on a Thursday (10th June 2021) but Mel B’s was on a Tuesday (27th Nov 2018).

I finally finished reading this yesterday! Partly due to the fact that I'm a bit of a slow reader, but there were a few days I didn't get around to reading it.

I really have to commend her for being so honest about her personal struggles, particularly in the hope that her sharing this could help others. She had some very positive advice to impart, that clearly comes from a place of experience and a desire for others to get help if they need it. I hope ultimately that it's been a carthartic experience for her to be so open.

Everything to do with her upbringing and pre-Spice Girls days was of interest because she'd rarely if ever spoken about her personal life. I also thought these chapters were well written and interesting, and I say this as someone who tends to find the childhood years to be the more boring aspect of an autobiography.

Loved all that she had to say from the formation of the Spice Girls through to 1998. Considering this is the fourth Spice Girls memoir and the fifth to go over these times, there was a fear of it being a bit "heard it all before". And yes to an extent I felt that, but I think she offered a unique perspective on those times and some different memories, enough for it to be more than worthwhile to read, as a Spice Girls fan.

I was a bit outspoken about how some 1999/2000 details weren't so accurate in parts, but generally speaking if I'm not overly focused on that, I appreciated to read how she felt about those times. I think many of us are perhaps guilty of looking back on Melanie C at that time in an unfavourable way, but I really do understand and empathise how her behaviour then was essentially a cry for help, a reflection on how ill she felt. It does make me sad with hindsight to read just how much she struggled during that time, and how exacerbating the tabloid press were throughout her time in the Spice Girls.

Her going over the 20+ years of her solo career was maybe a little more brief than I would have liked in comparison to the huge number of pages devoted to Spice Girls, but I get why. She still shared some interesting insights, such as how she felt about certain chart outcomes.

I guess one thing that struck me as interesting is what she chose not to say, such as her completely swerving to talk about the 2016 comeback failure, even though she alluded to a fall out in 2014. Otherwise, the fact that Emma was by far the Spice Girl she spoke the least about. I also don't think she said one word about Dancing with the Stars? I wonder if that experience was harder and more disappointing for Melanie than she ever let on. She did speak about other reality moments such as The Games.

It was lovely that the book ended on a few positive notes, like how fulfilling 2019 was for her.

One random note but she actually made me cry with what she had to say about her Nanny towards the very end of the book, it was very touching.

So yep, overall very positive! Hopefully all of her hard work in the US pays off. Her promo schedule has been crazy!

Mel is shooting and doing many interviews for this biography, but do you know how he is going in the book chart?

The book entered @ #7 last week. It is unknown if it remained in the Top 10 this week. Maybe someone else has the info.

That was an interesting watch a little bit different (although still same questions as usual obs). I found it a bit weird how she claimed to have read the book but then was so surprised at the how Girl power came about and the Spice Rack... they were both in the book! laugh.gif

Probably. It has more pages.

Posted by: Voodoo 19th May 2023, 02:16 PM

^ Indeed. Apparently the new edition has 32 additional pages.

Do paperbacks usually have more / less pages? How does it work?

Posted by: Blond 2.0 19th May 2023, 05:27 PM

much better cover classic sporty

it is usually smaller in terms of size so probably more pages only. Does it say anywhere about a new chapter or anyting like that?

Posted by: Babyboy 19th May 2023, 06:19 PM

Usually paperback versions have new chapters. It does make sense.

It was released internationally on paperback last year, but it had the same number of pages as the hardback edition, so maybe there is indeed new content, although nothing has been confirmed / announced yet. I guess we will soon find out. The release is less than 7 weeks away.

Much better cover.

Posted by: Babyboy 15th June 2023, 06:05 PM

God that cover and colour is a million times better than the hardback version. Almost tempted to get another copy because of how much better it looks.

Posted by: Babyboy 7th July 2023, 10:37 PM

So, new chapters or not?!?

Posted by: spiceboy 7th July 2023, 10:58 PM

Doesn't seem to clarify, I'll buy if there is new chapters in it. I do think the cover is so much better, the orange and blue also works really well as it's iconic 'Sporty'

Posted by: -Jay- 8th July 2023, 01:42 AM

Apparently no new content cry.gif I'll probably buy the paperback anyway, maybe whenever it gets a bit cheaper.

Posted by: vibe 8th July 2023, 06:57 AM
