BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize Dec 16 2018, 05:31 PM

It's Christmas chart week, with the recent top 2 Ariana Grande's thank u next and Ava Max's Sweet But Psycho looking like the biggest contenders (Ariana's newest track imagine will make an impact also). Chart campaigns and charity singles are prominent as ever, lead by LadBaby's take on We Built This City, with The Fire Tones' Do They Know It's Christmas and Flakefleet Primary's Light Up making a challenge

A year dominated by The Greatest Showman may fittingly end with it taking the Christmas #1 album, Michael Bublé's performance on the Strictly final could give him a chance though

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday and Sunday: Information on Twitter from MintRoyale only. Please do not make requests, we do not have any information other than what's posted.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 + Radio 1 Chart Update 5:30pm to 5:45pm.
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

Does anyone have an idea who those charity acts are?

Posted by: sammy01 Dec 16 2018, 06:42 PM

I'm surprised the OCC didn't make an article Saturday trying to make it more interesting by reporting the Saturday midweek that excludes streaming. I'm sure they have done the same before to fool people that it's not a foregone conclusion already.

Posted by: Brotho Dec 16 2018, 06:46 PM

From James Masterton:

1. We Built This City
2. Sweet But Psycho
3. Thank u, next

Ladbaby is a youtuber offering parental advice. The single is raising money for the trussel trust (food banks)

Posted by: AcerBen Dec 16 2018, 06:56 PM

Masterton is a twit. It's obvious the only reason Ariana isn't number 1 is because of missing streaming data.

Posted by: Pigs in blankets Dec 16 2018, 07:07 PM

At the moment, LadBaby, The Fire Tones and Flakefleet Primary might just scrape through low Top 50, it really depends how well they hold up. I just think the Xmas tracks might just push the campaign tracks down later in the week.

And another campaign track has surfaced from The Lake Poets called Shipyards

Posted by: slowdown73 Dec 16 2018, 07:09 PM

We built this city is awful, truly crap. Ava Max should have got the Christmas no1. The only consolation is X factor isn’t there!

Posted by: SKOB Dec 16 2018, 07:11 PM

It doesn't help that WBTC is a crap song to begin with.

Posted by: 777666jason Dec 16 2018, 07:14 PM

The thing with Ladbaby is he knows hes crap at singing (although his wifr isnt too bad) even in the lyrics he pokes fun at trying to get his wife a christmas number 1

Id rather that do well than a charity track by a load of celebrities that have massive wealth and could probably donate more than the sale would make, pretend they are doing something for charity

Posted by: scratchy23 Dec 16 2018, 07:19 PM

Is Sweet But Psycho really ahead of Thank u next now?

Hope this means it can pull through the week after Xmas?!

It is but only because streaming is missing as its usually a day behind

Sweet but Psycho will be the first number one of 2018 then!

Nope thats the first new song, perfect clinged on for a couple of weeks to get the first official charts in 2018

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel Dec 16 2018, 10:17 PM

Ava is COMING for #1 this week for SURE.

She's nearly tripling Ari on Itunes and the 125k gap in streams is about 800 sales at 150 streams 1 sale.

Obviously Ari's still ahead but if Ava's streams and sales increase and Ari continues to drop a bit it could actually be SO close.

Posted by: 🎄Cqmerqn🎄 Dec 16 2018, 10:19 PM

True, but I'm assuming most of those are on the 600 streams to 1 sale rule?

Ava's shortening the gap on Youtube too but it probably is too late unless she gains a fair amount over the next couple of days.

Posted by: Lomadz Dec 16 2018, 10:25 PM

Ari has got it in the bag, bookies think so too! Odds on to get it.

If you guess that sales are similar to last week, give Ava 11,000 sales and Ariana 4,000 (fitting the nearly 3-1 lead), a lead of 7,000 so Ariana needs to close by 1,000 sales per day on streaming. You take 800 from Spotify + Apple music + youtube video streams. She probably is closing 1,000 a day at the moment, but the streaming lead will continue to fall during the week. (If the pattern this week follows last week Sunday's streams should be only a lead of 80,000 on Spotify)

It is going to be very close. I'd still guess Ariana by less than 1k.

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel Dec 16 2018, 10:46 PM

It feels more exciting now!

I reckon a few will be shocked at how close Ava is this week, I think like you say they'll literally be only a couple of thousand in it, depending on Ava increasing and Ari falling on streaming and sales.

Calling it a "cover" is such a reach, there aren't any real similarities between the two songs anyway. But I think you know this and you're just saying what you've said here purely to be a deliberate annoyance.

You're forgetting she's outselling Ariana on itunes by 2100 to 700 copies so 3 times as many approx.

Ava's now #1 on Deezer and Amazon Music / Prime music, she's closed the gap on Youtube, Closing the gap on Spotify..

Ariana did nearly 150k more streams last week and was only 8k ahead so it'll be close.

Posted by: aidan755 Dec 17 2018, 01:23 PM

Zayn is going to do dreadful. Down to #29 on iTunes already (didn't reach that high in the first place) and there isn't any physical copies because they don't come out till this Friday. Wouldn't be surprised to see him not charting at all since iTunes is the only place people can buy the album and sales there are very weak anyway.

Streaming rules on the album will also be a hindrance, where they only count streams from the most popular 12 tracks. Anyone listening to the whole 27 tracks album will only contribute 12 streaming units (out of the 1000 needed per album ‘sale’) instead of 27.

I think it's more of a Boney M's Ma Baker reference than Poker Face but I can see how Gaga made the "ma-ma-ma-ma" interpolation relevant in today's scene.

Ava's now #1 on Deezer and Amazon Music / Prime music, she's closed the gap on Youtube, Closing the gap on Spotify..

Ariana did nearly 150k more streams last week and was only 8k ahead so it'll be close.

Stop it, I'm at peace with the fact I'm not going to win any money on Ava, don't give me false hope sarcasm.gif

I'd love Ava to get the Xmas #1 but I don't think she'll get there unless her numbers have another surge during the week - she's been closing the gap but not quickly enough. It'll be close though. Hopefully she can get the #1 after this anyway.

Posted by: sprock-93 Dec 17 2018, 03:21 PM

What a bad song to become #1. I don't know which is worse between Ariana & Sweet

If Mariah doubles streaming numbers during the Xmas Week maybe she will have a little chance!

Posted by: Lapland Labia Dec 17 2018, 03:22 PM

Well tbh if Ariana just scrapes it this week, then it almost certainly means the Poker Face cover will get Xmas no.1 next week unless Miley rises faster on Spotify! So your bet is probably safe at this point tbh

This week is Xmas No. 1 week.

Next week is the post Christmas chart and I think Mariah Carey may actually have a very good chance of making #1 then.

I mean I'm no music industry expert, but Zayn releasing this week without a CD is surely one of the worst decisions humanly possible. And if it is indeed true that he is at #67 in the midweeks, that must be one of the largest drop off's from debut album to sophomore album we've seen in recent years.

No CD in the only time of the year CDs rule is mind boggling. However maybe they wanted this so him flopping had an excuse or reason.

I am le sniggering to myself quietly at the Zayn midweek laugh.gif And to think everyone thought he'd be the breakout star from 1D when Niall's managed to place a live album in Ireland's top 20 albums this week.

Interesting to see a small battle developing between Ava Max and Ariana Grande. It would be nice to see Ava take it just because I love an unpredictable surprise at Christmas. For me, nothing will top the humiliation Westlife suffered at the hands of Bob The Builder in 2000. They'd got so smug having seven number ones in a row and their song ('What Makes A Man', I think? It was textbook dull ballad anyway) was absolutely thrashed by 'Can We Fix It'. So very British a defeat biggrin.gif

Shame the general public don't really care about the Xmas number one anymore, a close battle like this would have had people salivating in the past.

Makes the motivation behind the whole Rage Against The Machine campaign seem almost wasted, everyone wanted the Xmas number one back from the grip of X Factor, well they've got it...and it's been greeted with tumbleweed and shrugs of indifference all round ever since...

For me, it's why I've always loved the UK charts. Because like with a lot of things, we never take ourselves too seriously. Yes we'll usually follow what other countries are into, but by and large only we could ever get away with having Mr Blobby etc at the top in December. The only other near comparable market is Ireland, who've given chart toppers to Dustin The Turkey or Pat Shortt!

I think as others have pointed out in recent days, it's not so much indifference from the public, more record companies still figuring out how to find a way to make the Christmas chart matter in the age of streaming when there's still a small minority of people who haven't yet made the full time leap to Spotify et al. I'd like to think that these next two years coming will be when streaming really reaches mass consumption point and we'll see a quicker turnover of number ones and sales equivalent streams in the 100k+ bracket.

Posted by: dancember Dec 17 2018, 05:18 PM

Record label must be really trying for the #1 this week then, especially as Ava getting Xmas #1 would give her a little bit more publicity.
I still think Ariana will have it, but it could be a close race.

Posted by: gooddelta Dec 17 2018, 05:23 PM

I don't know...I just don't see it coming back around to be a big deal again any time soon.

The silly season element of songs that just wouldn't wash any other time of the year, and the high profile battles were a big part of the fun of the Xmas number one. The public has got to have a reason to care and that often used to be because the Xmas Number One used to entice people that didn't usually buy records. Usually either through novelty or charity records or fanbase-led battles, all of which streaming has effectively killed off.

I struggle to see many people getting too engaged with battles between various songs that have already been in the chart for weeks and are tailing off as Christmas comes around, having long faded from their cultural peak, and of which thank u, next is essentially a case in point. It's running on fumes in my opinion, it was everywhere a month ago but it doesn't feel as huge now and it seems odd to still have it at No.1.

Ariana currently 1.5k behind Ava then. Last week she started 3.8k ahead in the first mids and that grew to 8.7k by the end of the week. Still think she'll probably hang on but suddenly less confident... at least until the next mids.

I'm surprised there's such a gap between Flakefleet (#15) and Fire Tones (#67), especially since I believe Fire Tones had a physical CD available. Beginning their campaign on a Wednesday has really ruined their chances.

Oh and Little Mix look likely to be the first act to fall out of the Top 40 from the Top 10 after hitting ACR.

Mind you the top 75 is full of Christmas tracks, there will be more returning back in two weeks time. I was doing the sales prep for this Friday and there isn't hardly any new music to add.

Those days are gone when other artists where filtering through with new music, not just charity tracks.

Are we finally ready to admit Little Mix are under performing now? The 'scattered' promo has done nothing.

Also George Ezra will no doubt be the first number 1 of 2019 in the albums chart. I can see it getting a discount and he has some great promo coming up.

I don't see how Ariana can overtake Ava at from this point.

Comparing this week to last week Ariana was up 3.8k last week and down 1.7k this week. So she is doing 5.5k worse comparatively with almost the same data missing. (The gap may actually be 300ish copies different due to an extra day of youtube being missing). But with most of the week still to be counted she's 5k worse and can only afford to be 8.7k worse overall.

Well I'm astonished, Joel you're completely welcome to gloat at me if she pulls it off this Friday... still think Ariana will do it at the moment though.

Yeah it's not listed. Going from the views though it's not doing the 500k (Ariana) and 380k (ava) did plus lyric video's and other sources count, so it's still behind.

Ladybaby would have to sell 10k a day at least to stand a chance especially as streaming data for Spotify and Apple Music was missing.

WOW what a humiliation... I don't see a humiliation for being topped by a so popular song back in the day.... In any case that dull ballad would have been a #1 any other period of the year.. w00t.gif

I guess the bookies have taken a lot of money Ariana so her keeping her shorter than she really should be. Ariana is completely out of the race, Ava increased the lead by 950 with only missing youtube data so unless Ariana is leading on youtube by 1000 sales per day (she's not) Ava will keep increasing the lead as the week goes on.

The only threat is a LadBaby sales surge if media pick up on it more, even then Ava has a comfortable lead with LadBaby having virtually no missing streaming.

Still possible if he keeps increasing but he's already 2,700 behind and won't benefit from late streams as much as Ariana and Ava. That BBC News article "Sorry, but LadBaby won't be Christmas number one" must've really given him a boost today.

If it's true that Ava is further extending her lead now I think she's probably got this! Looking at last week again it was Ariana extending the gap between the two throughout the week, if it's the other way round now they're not likely to switch back over unless Ari gets a big boost from somewhere. Another case of sales still being significant enough to be the deciding factor it seems (and for a race as 'significant' as the Christmas #1), as Ariana appears to be ahead on every relevant streaming platform.

Watch it still somehow be LadBaby now to snatch possibly the worst ever Xmas #1 from the jaws of one of the better ones.

I can think of many ways to do the maths, none of them have Ariana coming out ahead.

Compare last week's Tuesday midweek to this weeks. Last week Ariana lead by 5k and this week is down by 2.2k - two days of youtube. So say each day of youtube is worth 400 sales more to Ariana than Ava that closes the gap by 800 to 1.4k.
Ariana is doing at least 6.4k worse than last week (which is a like-for-like comparsion after 4 days of sales and 3 of streaming) If she does 8.7k worse over the whole week she loses number one.

Alternatively looking just at Spotify streams (assume they are representative of the whole streaming market) Ava is up 17% comparing last week Fri/Sat/Sun numbers and Ariana is down 8%. If you take Ariana's total streaming sales last week and reduce by 8% (53,754 * 0.92) to comes to 49,453 and increase Ava's by 17% (guessing Ava digital sales last week at 10,000/streaming 39,708) (39,708*1.17 = 46,458)

If Ariana is only leading streaming by 49,453 to 46,458, Ava easily has the sales to take the lead.

But a big part of the reason she's ahead is because we're missing 3 days of YouTube streams, and the usual 1 day of audio streams. When they get added it's going to be much closer.

I'm hoping for Ava myself too but trying not to stay realistic!

It doesn't matter; they were a day behind last week too. When the missing data is added on Friday it may well help Ariana, but it helped her last week too. (It will help less this week because the streaming gap is smaller.)

I don't think the gap on YouTube is significant enough for it to carry Ariana across the line in itself, Kworb's data is a few days behind as ever but Ariana's lead over Ava there was 193k on the last day we had data for so assuming it's kept roughly constant and that the vast majority of those will be free streams that only makes up about 1k sales for the 3 missing days. I still wouldn't rule Ariana out completely because the missing data is an uncertainty as always and it is still close but I think the trends in midweeks tend to hold throughout the week and considering there is always some missing data, that suggests that if Ava is trending towards pulling ahead then that will probably continue to happen throughout the week (and then maybe it'll tighten a little right at the end of the week when all the missing streaming is lumped on, but again looking at last week the gap between Ari and Ava only increased by 2.4k from Thursday to Friday, it's bound to be less than that this week I'd have thought and based on the trend so far Ava will be more than 2.4k ahead on the Thursday mids).

I think Digital Sales Data is just an estimate and IIRC it tends to be way off when there are songs that have huge leads.

Do we know is there's more missing YT data this week than last week?

It will only count as a 600th of a sale. You're better off just buying it if you want it to go to #1 (or wait for next week to watch it if you really don't want to help it at all).

If it does go to #1 it could have the biggest drop from #1 in history by dropping out of the top 100, the record so far is 1-97 for Three Lions earlier this year.

It doesn't really make any significant difference as far as the chart goes. There's no reason paying consumers would have massively different listening habits to non-paying ones. The distinction between paid and free streaming is only relevant when it comes to songs which are big on YouTube but not on audio streaming platforms.

Latest Kworb update for Ava is 0.2805 compared to 0.2897 2 and a half hours ago so Ladbaby is starting to slow down again on iTunes.. come on red update.

LadBaby is still in bright green, though.

As much as I'm not a fan of the track, I'd like to see LadBaby get it, as Ava's got it nailed on for next week regardless. The more #1's in a year, the better wink.gif

Posted by: TheGrinch Dec 18 2018, 07:45 PM

I still think Ariana will only be a couple of hundred sales behind Ava once everything is added in

Posted by: dobbo Dec 18 2018, 07:55 PM

I'm just glad we have an actual battle for the Christmas #1 again! Even more unusual for there to be 3 songs in the mix, none of which we can comprehensively say will finish on top.

Posted by: jimwatts Dec 18 2018, 08:07 PM

I'm genuinely excited... and surprised.
For most of the last month, people have been practically handing Ariana the Xmas #1, now it seems she is reportedly trailing in a 3-horse race.
I hope Ava gets the #1 and right now I believe she will - that would have been a story in itself.

At the start of Nov on another thread, I said novelty singles would have no chance - well Ladbaby may be the exception that makes me saying that sound foolish. He has a following it has clearly caught on with - I've even given it a few Spotify plays myself. But still... I don't see it, he must be around 10k behind both Ava and Ariana once the missing streaming data is added in, so his surge on iTunes today would need to be sustained tomorrow and Thursday as well.

Not necessarily, Mariah could get next week as her Christmas Day streams will be massive.

Even still Ava could have it the week after but by then Mark Ronson or someone could overtake.

Posted by: dandy* Dec 18 2018, 08:39 PM

I'm sort of rooting for Mariah to make #1 the week after. It would be pretty well deserved after all this time and would make up for her missing #1 this week when she really should have claimed it.

THIS!

Would Mariah be no.1 this week without ACR?

Come on, sausage song novelty!! Show BJSC and X Factor how it'a done!

QUOTE(dancember @ Dec 18 2018, 06:54 PM) *
It will only count as a 600th of a sale. You're better off just buying it if you want it to go to #1 (or wait for next week to watch it if you really don't want to help it at all).

If it does go to #1 it could have the biggest drop from #1 in history by dropping out of the top 100, the record so far is 1-97 for Three Lions earlier this year.

I see :/ I don't buy singles. I could watch the YT vid and free Spotify it then fooor 2/600 of a sale.

the silly thing will be that the OCC will have to estimate 1 day of Spotify data and who knows how many days of YT data, think YT is even slower reporting than Spotify,
so if it's close, it's a pity it will all be based on last day estimates rather than real data

for me, personally this week, it reminds me of a few weeks back when Eastside managed #1 but no matter how you looked at the data, Promises should have been added and not even close... for me, this week it's the same, Ariana should be like 5k ahead by my calculations so not sure how she's behind even with missing data

CORRECTION: It means according to very arbitrary rules that the OCC have made up (and are generally inconsistent about) you've sold/streamed more than any other song in a set 7-day time period, in the UK.

Not really a fair comparison when the BT40 is broadcast on lots of different stations compared to the official chart only being on Radio 1. In any case the vast majority of listeners for both are probably just people casually listening to the radio at the time it's on rather than specifically tuning into it (I'd be shocked if there are more people that actively choose to listen to the BT40 than the official one).

You might well be right that there are people who think the BT40 #1 is the actual #1 though just because of how incessantly they bleat on about how 'official' it is because of those higher listening figures laugh.gif

To be fair they made it as explicit as possible on the show that it was just an iTunes #1, they even gave a segment to Anne talking about the Official Charts and it was made pretty clear that they were different things. What annoys me more is articles saying things like 'Flakefleet Primary are now at #2 on the charts' - erm, no they're not.

Yeh, the "official" chart is going to slip further and further down in people's thoughts due to the way it's run and rules are decided. Adding streaming with sales was always going to be tricky, they should have just done two official charts.

Then you have stupid rules that a song could be number one but because its more than 3 years old it doesn't count the majority of it's streams or something. Its too complicated to the average person and Its not a true reflection of what is popular and more a chart to suit a few execs who have a biased viewpoint.

This is why there should be a sales chart and a streaming chart run separately. People can then decided between themselves which has more status.

Masterton has updated. Ava maintaining lead of 2500 over LadBaby, and extended lead to 3000 over Ariana. Missing day of streaming means Ava’s lead closer to 8000 over LadBaby and would have to be pushing her below 0.2 on Kworb to stand a chance.

Most of Little Mix's fans do streaming now whereas Olly is more of a physical seller.

Many of LM's fans won't want the CD for Christmas because they have a Spotify subscription.

Glastonbury headliner Kylie Minogue still selling well. 3.7k and 45th in todays update. Her 6th biggest week of sales 30 weeks into the campaign. Roll on 2019!

But I thought they underperformed on Spotify for every era?

While I accept the reason for ACR, but making it fixed for songs of 3 years is not convincing, for example would this have prevented the Rage campaign against x factor?

It's not comparable. In 2009 a sale was a sale. If streaming counted in 2009 it would have been negligible and Rage still would've been #1.

A sale is still a sale now but most people have switched to streaming making it harder for campaign singles to do well (and likewise, making it harder for X Factor).

But yes Rage would've been on ACR and would probably have missed #1 if streaming was as big as it was now.

Posted by: chartdj Dec 19 2018, 06:55 PM

exactly, even if streaming today counts more than sales, I think if for whatever reason an old song gets more streams than new songs it should be awarded #1

Happened at Christmas a few years ago with Alex Day (of making an account on BuzzJack to promote his single fame) with 'Forever Yours' as well.

Even if it's just people/businesses/shops endlessly streaming playlists? There's so many Christmas playlists on the home screens people are just starting them off and leaving them. Is that what the charts should be about?

It's no different from people streaming the trending playlists, or the top 40 playlists. The charts are now full of streams in the background, streams while people are asleep, streams where people listen for a minute and then skip, or where a playlist is just on at a party.

Yeah, that's true and that's probably next on the hitlist. It's more prominent at Christmas though with the sheer amount of playlists and extra people that are streaming.

Streaming is one massive headache that is gonna take ages to find a perfect solution on.

Yes LadBaby back up to number 1 in today's midweeks - looks likely that “We Built This City” is certain to debut at least #2 as he's already outsold what Ariana Grande had (up to Thursday) last week, and she's down about 10%.

Nice to see a charity song looking at getting the Christmas #1 again, haven’t heard the song but I suppose it’s not the song itself that matters as much as the meaning behind it’s campaign. It will be a shame if Ava misses out on #1 though but if it’s Mariah that claims the #1 instead it’s not the end of the world. Hopefully Ava will get a shot in the New Year but new Post Malone could prevent her tongue.gif

Actually it would be pretty hilarious if she’s blocked from #1 three weeks in a row by three different songs: Ladbaby, Mariah, Post Malone. Has that happened before? I feel like it has but I’m blanking (Moves Like Jagger? How Deep Is Your Love?)

Lmaoooo. This is truly the darkest timeline. I really hope Ava can still get to #1 at a later date anyway, preferably preventing Mariah from taking it next week please tongue.gif I guess I can never be mad at a song making a good amount of money for charity and all but this honestly is going to be probably the worst song to ever get Christmas #1, I usually love a novelty hit but this is just painfully cringeworthy.

Interesting that during the week of the Xmas #1 there have been three different songs that were odds-on favourites at some point. Has that ever happened before?

Just shows you still need promo.

Ava just needed one biggish TV performance in the last couple of weeks and she would have guaranteed #1.

If Ariana had released the video for Thank You, Next a week later, she would still be #1.

I'm genuinely shocked at how Ladbaby retained such consistently high sales throughout the week, I really thought they'd fall away.

Fair play though, been a long time since sales made such an impact and just goes to show it's never over etc etc. For a novelty track I do quite like it, charity songs don't always need to be dull & dreary choir renditions.

Honestly, I think the charts give too much weight to digital sales when 99.9% of the population is exclusively streaming. So if Ariana is getting more streams than Ava then she is more popular imo.

But anyway, the user who pointed the most popular song is neither Ariana nor Ava but Mariah Carey is correct. She should be #1 tbh.

Anyway, in your opinion what's the % of the public that consumes individual singles through streaming vs. through digital sales? I mean, I think it's laughable y'all honestly believe "Sweet but Psycho" is a bigger song right now among the GP than "Thank U, Next" but last time I had a discussion here people were legitimately arguing Rita Ora was a popstar the GP was very interested in so I guess we're all in different realities tbh.

No I totally understood your point, I knew it was hyperbolic but even with exaggerating, you're arguing that those who download aren't a significant part of the music consuming audience that makes up the chart. It's short-sighted, especially when you look at Kworb and see that Sweet But Psycho is selling roughly four times as much as thank u, next. Couple that with a difference of only ~50k on Spotify, and Ava is quite easily ahead. I don't see why it's such a difficult concept to grasp?

I agree that there's a significantly higher number of people who stream over those who buy, but that doesn't mean we can ignore the latter and say it's irrelevant. But it seems you're not open to discussing this topic if you're giving us that attitude about the previous debate.

Posted by: 777666jason Dec 20 2018, 04:39 PM

Erm if you did a survey of the “general public” there’s a strong chance a lot of them wouldn’t have heard of any of the three tracks or a lot of number 1s etc this year, does that make them any less popular, probably not tongue.gif

While I don't necessarily disagree (I'll let the charts decide), this is a very misleading way of presenting the information. Of course, I'm speaking relatively - thank u, next is quite significantly behind Sweet But Psycho on iTunes is the point I was making, and it's not something to be ignored just because thank u, next is ahead on Spotify. iTunes may add comparatively less to the chart than it used to, but it really can make all the difference (see Freya Ridings perhaps most notably this year, who owes pretty much all of her top 10 weeks to downloads)

Yeah absolutely, I think LadBaby can attest to the power of sales biggrin.gif Just incongruous data presentation (which I suppose is in part the fault of how iTunes/Spotify present their respective charts) is why the differing proportioned get so muddied. I think if the individual chart sales components were represented side by side with their proportions intact, there'd be a lot less hoopla about how the official chart doesn't line up with the impression people get from looking at iTunes & Spotify on their own.

As an upshot, at least there was fuss in the media made over the Xmas No.1 in the end. Ava's team are absolutely mad not getting her over here for some last minute promo, a Christmas number one out of nowhere with her first hit would have been such a good marketing story.

Yes it'll def make the news if he takes the no1 as it's a random novelty track although I'm not too sure if it'll help more people promo for next years race as it didnt with the rage campaign, just meant we got a lot of crap campaigns!! We shall see though!!

Posted by: FleetSeb Dec 20 2018, 05:53 PM

Honestly, Sweet But Psycho sounds like a novelty track to me so I can't really take it seriously. I was hoping Ariana would stay at #1 but not to be, don't really care between the other two because one is a novelty track and one sounds like one to me, even if apparently it is a serious pop song. Therefore, supporting LadBaby on the basis that at least it is for charity.

Exactly the whole reason we have SCR and ACR is because streaming a song every day for 6 months isn't the same value as buying the track outright so something had to be done to equal this out and speed up the chart.

Posted by: SKOB Dec 20 2018, 06:14 PM

So is it confirmed that Ladbaby will be #1 even with almost non-existent streaming?

Posted by: Tedward Dec 20 2018, 06:14 PM

This could be the last stand for downloads affecting the chart- in 2 (maybe even 1) years time, iTunes could very well be dead. Though I can't say I like the song, nice to see a novelty track getting the Christmas #1 for what might be the last time!

It was more of an observation than a personal attack.

But what you're essentially saying is that the charts should be fiddled or amended in your favour, downloads are still a legitimate consumption of music and still count (you know, on a platform where people are actually choosing the music they consume and purchase). Besides, even on streaming Ariana is gradually collapsing and Ava is gradually growing (and there's not exactly a lot of difference at this point), so I can't see how Ava wouldn't deserve it if she finished ahead.

This week has been great, may not be the result everyone wants but it's got people talking again which is great. My preferred top 3 would be Ari, Ava and Ladboy but oh well.

100 posts late but I don't see any similarities between Poker Face/Paparazzi and Sweet But Psycho aside from them both being by female pop singers... they're all completely different songs.

Are there people REALLY getting uptight about a novelty song being #1? Lighten up jesus christ

This. People complain about the charts being boring & the #1 being too predictable for weeks on end, now we have a genuinely exciting chart battle again and now it's because it's not the result people want.

I think it's great that a song like this can come out of nowhere & upset the odds no matter its quality. And it's for a good cause!

Disagree, not completely similar but impossible to deny some similarities.

It's not exactly a direct copy but I think it's a bit disingenuous to deny that there's any similarity between 'Sweet But Psycho' and those Gaga songs.

I can see how someone would associate Ava with that Gaga era but I'd argue that "Sweet But Psycho" doesn't take more than a tiny bit of influence, if any, from "Poker Face". It's definitely unique enough for someone to listen to the song 10 times without noticing any Gaga similarities.

Well, you're on a chart music forum. Ofc you're gonna get people being happy, unhappy and passionate with what does and doesn't do well in the charts. laugh.gif

For me, in all honesty I wouldn't mind as much if it wasn't at Ava's expense laugh.gif Like, I'd probably deal with it better if it was 01. Ladbaby, 02. Ariana & 03. Ava haha ph34r.gif Ava's already far exceeded my expectations chart success wise though. I just feel like her shot at number 1 is almost over (even if she increases etc..) isn't there rumours of Post Malone releasing before the end of the year is over/early next year? If true I could see a Ladbaby/Mariah/Post (9 weeks) turn over at number 1.

Posted by: mdh Dec 20 2018, 08:12 PM

I feel as though Ava will get at least a week at the top! Ideally we'll have a Ladbaby/Mariah/Ava/Miley/Post turnover - I don't think Post Malone will be an instant #1, probably a #3 debut and potentially climbig to the top after.

I could maybe even see Mark Ronson + Miley perhaps growing enough to overtake Ava after Christmas.

I would have never thought that Ariana was in danger this week in the first place but I think the release of Imagine might have hurt TUN just too much. It's a surprising week for sure.

Yeh true, there's also no doubt that the reason Ariana has spent so long at the top is because the video came a few weeks later and caused renewed interest! It added at least 3 week to the no1 length!

Yeah. iTunes gift cards still sell incredibly well where I work. Older songs (typically "best of the year")/discounted songs tend to do well and benefit a lot.

See? Why canae we all be more like Stephen? Instead of arguing over who is and isn't and who deserves no.1, we could be like Stephen and ask about Cher and Glastonberry headliner Kylie Minouglue! By the way, where is Glastonberry headliner Kylie Minogue?

Can I also just say thanks to all the chart mods for all their hard week bringing this thread topic to you every week and all your contributions.

I don't think there will be any mids in the next fortnight with Christmas and New Years Day falling on a Tuesday. iTunes and Spotify topics will be your best friend, I expect normal services will resume the week of 7 January 2019. If we have any info it will be posted when its available.

In the meantime can I say to everyone have a nice Christmas and a happy new year and thanks to all members who have contributed to this year's xmas chart. 20 pages+ well done guys.

I don't follow the Official Chart anymore but if this Ladbaby song gets to number one then it can only be something refreshing. I doubt all of the contributions towards this week's chart for the songs behind where made on purpose, it's easy to listen to a song by accident or be in a situation where you are forced to listen to a particular song somewhere in public but whether it was for a campaign or not you can tell the contributions for Ladbaby were pre-meditated so it feels purer.

Actually Walls are using it. Half way through the chart week Lad Baby announced that if you downloaded his single and then posted a screenshot of your purchase onto his facebook page you would be entered into a competition to win a years supply of Walls Sausage Rolls. This may be the reason sales picked up in the latter part of the week. There is already a few people saying on the page that the winner ought to donate the prize direct to the Tressel Trust charity that the single is raising money for. In terms of who is more known/popular this week I have heard a lot of people talking about Lad Baby, whilst Ariana's has been around long enough now (and isn't exactly her best effort in the first place) so there didn't seem much interest in her from the people I've discussed the charts with, and I think Ava is relatively unknown still as she is still building up, and more people will actually know who she is in a week or two, I mean the only reason I know of her myself is is that I have been following the xmas chart battle. I'm gonna go now and listen to Ava Max now to find out what it sounds like, as I didn't want to stream during Xmas week, as I wanted Lad Baby to get it (and I only heard of either of them when I saw the contenders based on the first midweek, I just happened to be drawn to checking out the novelty song first, then stuck with it).

Posted by: Bjork Dec 21 2018, 07:32 AM

just noticed Ladbaby has finally cracked the Youtube chart

1 Ariana Grande - thank u, next (376,133)
2 Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas Is You (347,879)
3 Ava Max - Sweet but Psycho (335,270)
11 NEW LadBaby - We Built This City (181,905 )

still unsure how he sold so much on Wednesday, was doing well on iTunes but not that well, 4 times better than Ava... but not 20 times better... weird

Posted by: Christmasteve201 Dec 21 2018, 08:11 AM

A friendly reminder ahead of today's chart, no spoilers of any sort are allowed. That includes revealing the #1 in either chart - it's not allowed in spoiler tags either. Thanks!
