BuzzJack Music Forum _ Ariana Grande _ Andrew's Top 25 Ariana Album Tracks

Posted by: Andrew. 25th May 2020, 09:40 PM

hi.gif I wanted to do a proper rank of Ari's songs (the songsorter isn't the most accurate lbr) but I figured if I did a 'normal' one with singles etc it'd just be the same old songs being ranked and discussed. So I'm doing a rank of my favourite 25 album tracks from our high-ponytail wearing superstar. Every album is represented, some more than others obvs! I'll leave y'all to guess which ones have the least x

I'll be completing this over the next week or two, seatbelts on. Michelle.png

Thanks guys heart.gif I'm not sure the thread will be as popular when you've all seen some of my choices though kink.gif Let's get an early start:

Honourable Mentions

Because Ariana has such a spotless discography for me (a grand total of 2 filler tracks on her albums, excluding Yours Truly as I haven't gone back to about half of that since I listened two weeks ago), there was a bit of a battle for that last spot on the countdown. There were seven album tracks AS WELL as these four I would've been happy to include. She is the actual queen of albums cheeseblock.png But these were the three that didn't quite make the cut.

'Make Up' is nothing other than an incredibly cute, vibey track here which is mega underrated! I say vibey because I always have to be 'in the mood'/happy to listen to it, it's a cheery song which just makes me think of good times. I can't confirm or deny that the Fenty Beauty line had a hand in it's honourable mentioning. I don't get why people dismiss this as filler so often, is it just too cute? Am I too easily pleased? Probably tbh.

'Almost Is Never Enough' is another track which doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I don't think Nathan is the most popular male singer she could've collaborated with which drags down it's place in most people's estimations kink.gif But their voices blend so well together along with the piano backing to create a lovely ballad. You can tell they were together at the time! One I actually knew quite early on but didn't go back to much until I started getting more into the Yours Truly era recently.

Something else that just misses out is the Cashmere Cat collaboration 'Be My Baby'. On my first listen of 'My Everything' last month it immediately stood out for it's slick production. It's such an instant album track and the verses in particular are so lively (lol) and springy am I making sense? The production makes it. As I've listened more and more (btw when will the NTA performance effect kick in and send it top 200? tell me y'all get that) and been as acquainted with My Everything as her last three albums, other tracks have overtaken but this is still more than worthy of a mention.

Finally, while there's actually a few songs I haven't mentioned I'd put above it I thought I'd throw some love to 'Lovin' It' just because it stands out as a favourite from 'Yours Truly' and I could see this being top 25 in a future update. The poppy production is addictive, I'm weirdly terrible at remembering song names/how they go initially but this just wouldn't leave my head until I remembered what it was! A solid bop from her first album. It reminds me a lot of Dua’s Good In Bed which for me and only me works in its favour kink.gif

The top 25 is starting tomorrow!

Posted by: Jade 25th May 2020, 11:37 PM

None of those are essential tbh so I can live with them not making it laugh.gif 'make up' is probably my least favourite on 'thank u, next', I just find it a bit flat. I did have to laugh at Ari introducing the song with "where my 'makeup' stans at?" on the Sweetener World Tour live album though :') 'Almost Is Never Enough' is really dull oops, probably my least favourite on 'Yours Truly' also lmao, definitely does not justify its length as one of the longest on the album! 'Be My Baby' is cute enough but my least favourite of the three Cashmere Cat collabs. 'Lovin It' probably the best of the bunch but one of the more forgettable tracks on 'Yours Truly'.

Looking forward to the top 25 happy.gif

If I’d been at the tour I would’ve been the only one to respond kink.gif The fact she probably likes Make Up more than Touch It though puts tears in my eyes as much as I enjoy Make Up though laugh.gif

The thing that stopped AINE from being in the top is the length yeah, it’s a 3.5 minutes song not a 5.5 D:

I’ve never heard the other Cashmere Cat songs properly ohmy.gif I think I heard Quit once years ago and found it kinda hmm, it might’ve been the one he did with Selena though which shows the impression it made on me laugh.gif I seemed to be a lone wolf with the ‘Lovin’ It’ love on the Yours Truly listen through!

Thanks for your comment heart.gif

25. Better Off
Track 12 on 'Sweetener'

After MUCH deliberation, 'Better Off' takes the prestigious title of Ariana's 25th best album track *____* The song includes obvious references to her relationship with the late Mac Miller (sad.gif), and the fact Ari never sang it on tour shows us how personal the song is to her. It took me a while to develop the love I have for this, when I fell for 'Sweetener' near the end of 2018 it was Better Off, TLIC and Blazed (that one's still poop oops) that I'd yet to feel much for, this sounding a bit dull to me. And how wrong was I?! 'Better Off' is the perfect ballad on an album which lacks slightly in that respect, and it sounds particularly beautiful in winter as well wub.gif Any Ariana song with strings is automatically improved and they just add to the haunting-ness of Better Off. A beautiful song to start off with heart.gif

Favourite lyrics: Let's put them topics to bed and go f*** on the roof, just to say that we did it
On the road a lot, gotta keep it 1000

24. Bad Idea
Track 6 on 'thank u, next'

jump.gif I got a badddddd idea, how bout we take a little bit of time away jump.gif 'Bad Idea' was one of the few conventional pop songs on the thank u, next album. For that reason, it was an instant stand out for that sheer popiness and catchiness it had, bearing in mind that I liked the album on first listen but a few of tracks (which you may or may not be seeing in the future of this countdown) were growers. There's still a darkness in the song which is prevalent on the whole album, the beats in the chorus give it a grittiness which really gives the track an extra edge. So it still feels like a tu, n track. This is such a party-ready song which makes it great, it's one of those where I just wanna scream out the words even as I'm typing lol. It has been overtook by other songs on the album which have revealed more to me after the first few listens but that doesn't make this any less fab.

Favourite lyrics: Forget about it, yeah, forget about him, yeah, forget about me
But, boy, don't trip (Don't trip), you know this isn't real
You should know I'm temporary

The quality of this countdown already cheeseblock.png

I feel like I perhaps underrate 'Better Off' a bit due to the standard of some of her other melancholic album tracks. It's maybe not as essential as 'ghostin' for instance, also about Mac, but it is captivating in its own way when it's on. As for 'bad idea, I definitely underrated that at first - when the album came out I charted the singles plus at least 'ghostin', 'NASA' and 'bloodline' off the top of my head, while this was nowhere to be seen ohmy.gif but yeah, it was such a grower, what a banger! The outro is so idiosyncratic for an Ariana song too. What an album 'thank u, next' is, looking forward to that listening session soon heart.gif

Posted by: JulianNial 27th May 2020, 02:36 PM

I'm a massive 'bad idea' fan. I have to admit I like many underrate 'better off' but it's actually one of the stronger tracks on 'sweetener' for sure!

Posted by: LewisGT 27th May 2020, 05:13 PM

Bad Idea is my favourite of the two so far. Such a great big pop song. wub.gif

And it only gets better cheeseblock.png Thanks for the comment x

I agree about Better Off being easy to underrate, in the grand scheme of her ballads I can see why it wouldn't be a standout. Bad Idea is a banger I can agree *.* It's that bop. Yasss can't wait! <3

Thank you Michelle.png Yeah ik that a lot of people can't really get behind the Pharrell productions on Sweetener so hopefully the calmness of this compared to...Sweetener bop it for example is a bit more appealing laugh.gif

Thanks! <3 Yeah me too, I'm glad she found time for typical Ari bop on 'Thank U, Next' as much as I love the rest of it.

23. Moonlight
Track 1 on 'Dangerous Woman'

'Moonlight' is the first track from her best album to drop and what a wonderful opener wub.gif So dreamy and romantic, it sums up the Dangerous Woman era in one. The instrumental section is my fave, it makes me feel so cuddly inside blush.gif Ariana's vocal are pure perfect, there's a subtleness about them which adds to the gentle nature of the whole song (English essay realness *.*) I can't fault this apart from it's not in the favourites category, it almost acts as her best opener. So damn CUTE. The lyric 'you could have moonlight in your hands' sums up that cosy vibe. Love this <3 As I said, it's almost the best opener...

Favourite lyrics: The sun is setting and you're right here by my side
He's so bossy, he makes me dance

22. Imagine
Track 1 on 'thank u, next'

Two openers here! I can't say I was too enamoured with 'Imagine' on first listen. It was the second song we heard from thank u, next and I remember my debut play of it being holding my phone to my ear in Spanish :') This came at the time when I was obsessed with 'thank, u next' (next) and had only just began stanning Ariana after liking her but not LOVING her throughout the years (sometime in 2018 I actually went through a brief phase when I was kinda off on her for some reason can we shoot my past internet presence please) so my expectations were high but this was just...there. But I soon saw sense, as the wistfulness and yearning for a perfect love got to me and gave me love for the song. I wouldn't have the minimality of it any other way. heart.gif The drawn out imaaaaaaagine's are breathtaking and I imagine she'd have been a bit breathtaken too after holding that note Michelle.png There's no other word to describe this other than beautiful, my listening of it has simmered down a lot more than some of the other album tracks though.

Favourite lyrics: tell me your secrets, all of the creep shit
Love how my face fits so good in your neck

Posted by: Jade 28th May 2020, 07:43 AM

Ooh two lovely album openers there! I'm glad Ariana mostly treats us to full length ones (3/5) as nice as her shorter intro tracks can be. Both of these very quickly remind us how great of a vocalist she is. 'Moonlight' is very dreamy indeed <3 it was instantly a song I gravitated towards from 'Dangerous Woman', it hasn't held up as one of the very best for me over the years but still great. On the flip side, 'imagine' turned out to be a massive grower! I originally remember finding it a little dull when I first heard it on the chart show. But it eventually clicked in a big way! Her whistle notes are particularly heavenly on it heart.gif

Posted by: JulianNial 28th May 2020, 10:01 AM

Yes both very beautiful! Ari is SO good at album openers.

Posted by: LewisGT 28th May 2020, 04:43 PM

Moonlight is my favourite of her opening tracks and Imagine would be a close 2nd.

The whistle notes on Imagine are everything!

She is the queen of openers! (when she bothers x) as gorgeous as Raindrops is a full song would be better. The Intro on My Everything...insert RuPaul meh gif.

21. Be Alright
Track 3 on 'Dangerous Woman'

'Be Alright' is a full out bop. I know the lyrics meant a lot to some people but that's never been what's it about for me, it's that house beat wub.gif I took this very early from the album as it's one of Ariana's most dancey songs and it's a style that suits the girl! What I love is that the bopitity never stops, it's an absolute banger right the way through. Something different on 'Dangerous Woman', I could actually see this more on 'My Everything' but a bop is a bop as the bible says! clap.gif

Favourite lyrics: Baby, don't you know
All o'them tears gon' come and go
But daylight is so close
So don't you worry 'bout a thing

20. Hands On Me (feat. A$AP Ferg)
Track 11 on 'My Everything'

When I first listened to 'My Everything' and saw the results of the recentish rate on here, I was horrified to see that this came 12th, and out of the actual songs only beat the deluxe tracks mellow.gif Single or not, when a Jessie J track beats you on Buzzjack that's not a good indicator. But the reason I love 'Hands On Me' is how infectious it is. It might not be the most innovative/original of her songs but when you've got a grinding TUNE like this who even cares? It's emerged as one of my favourite album tracks from My Everything (stay tuned as there's a few more above it x #hype) A$AP Ferg, whoever that is oop, repeating the same verse twice is lazy but his part is a bop so I'm not too mad. Not one of her absolute best obvs but a fun sensual song that needs more love.

Favourite lyrics: You just keep your eyes on my you know what
Eyes on me, dance on me tonight

I'm definitely one of the people that cherishes the lyrics of 'Be Alright' a lot! It's one of the most hopeful songs I've ever come across - so perfect for 'One Love Manchester' heart.gif of course the production is great too though, it's weird as I wasn't huge on tropical influenced music at the time but this is an exception! Gotta love the choreography that she wheels out for it too. 'Hands On Me' is a bit underrated I agree, a diet bop kink.gif not a massive 'My Everything' highlight but not the total non-event that it's made out to be. She really went in hard with the amount of features on that album laugh.gif

Posted by: Jordan Lee 28th May 2020, 10:11 PM

better off hit me a while after sweeteners release and now it’s top tier of the album for me. Initially it was sort of one of those moments what just didn’t grab me at first but now I love it. It’s something what connected when the lyrics hit home to a situation I was going through (except I didn’t wanna f— on a roof).

bad idea is still awful though. I’ve never given the love unfortunately cry.gif

Moonlight and imagine though wub.gif wub.gif amazing openers.

Be Alright is another one what grew on me over time, probably mid tier on the album it’s from but it’s cute.

Excited for the top 20! I really need to sit down and think of where I’d rank stuff tbh love this idea and have no idea at all where this will go! My gut feeling is telling me #1 will be something from Dangerous Woman I just don’t know what!

Thanks again Jade <3I rewatched the One Love Manchester performance of 'My Everything' last night and it's so gorgeous cry.gif Thinking about tropical music I'm the same, I suppose you could say Be Alright is of it's time!

Ariana could've made Nicki Minaj jealous with the amount of features on My Everything :')

Thanks Jordan! We will see what emerges victorious (Freak The Freak Out to be #1 tbh) cheeseblock.png

19. Daydreamin
Track 7 on 'Yours Truly'

I promised every album would be represented and if you're a massive 'Yours Truly' fan then you can stop reading now, here's your lot Michelle.png My first listen of 'Daydreamin' was less than three weeks ago and as y'all will see in the listenthrough thread, I immediately stanned. A stunning ballad from Ariana which perfectly embodies being infatuated, the song and it's lyrics just GET it. The electronicy 'oh-oh-oh-oh-oh' bits are my favs, so catchy. 'Daydreaming with my chin in the palm of hands' Miss relatable Grande strikes again *.* Only 'The Way' and 'Popular Song' beat this on Yours Truly.

Favourite lyrics: It's the way you walk, the way you talk
The way you make me feel inside
So I'm daydreamin'
With my chin in the palm of my hands

18. Sweetener
Track 6 on 'Sweetener'

'Sweetener' is Pharrell in his most Pharrellest. Bops and sqills and squeaks to the 100 cheeseblock.png If you like in general what he did for this album, you'll love it, if not...good luck with that. Naturally I'm in the love camp as I'm one of the few on here that adores the album! It's an overused word but I find the production this song so euphoric and vibey. It's sweet without being too corny and extra. I can relate to it as well, that theme of turning the bad stuff into something good and finding inner piece is done so well on here wub.gif I think it's one of the more popular album tracks on Sweetener in general?

Favourite lyrics: I like the way you like the bowl
Somehow your method, it touches my soul
You said she like me, I smile, I know

Posted by: Jordan Lee 29th May 2020, 07:06 PM

Daydreamin is one of my favourites from Yours Truly wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

Also love the title track for sweetener despite the “I love the way you lick the bowl” line laugh.gif

The shade of only one 'Yours Truly' song making the cut laugh.gif well, you chose a good one, 'Daydreamin' is lovely! It's really nice to hear that the listen through helped you to discover it and stan right away heart.gif really glad we decided to do them! The title track from 'Sweetener' is a great pick from that album - it seems to be the best-received Pharrell produced song on it - even charting at the time! The bridge is lush and I can't help but love the bop it chorus too kink.gif

I get why people don't like the bop it but it's genuinely the element that makes the song for me laugh.gif

17. Fake Smile
Track 5 on 'thank u, next'

The eternally underrated 'Fake Smile' up next! Joining the likes of Better Off and Imagine, this didn't enamour itself to me at all on first listen to the 'thank u, next' album. I felt like the instrumental was bland and aimless despite the wonderful lyrics. Well that soon changed *.* The spiky beat matches with the lyrics to create an anxiety anthem which turned out to be one of the best songs in that category of the year for me, Charli's 'Gone' #1 naturally. wub.gif But this is an Ariana rank (omg I need to do this for Charli) and the subtleness of the song brings the feeling she was trying to create forwards so well and unlike say Shangela's voice on 'NASA' (hallelou x) the sample works amazingly, it brings a real classiness to the song. The pre-chorus is so relatable and the best part heart.gif I don't go back to it that much but when I do I feel it. laugh.gif

Favourite Lyrics: I can't fake another smile
I can't fake like I'm alright
If I'm being honest, I done been through way too much

16. Sometimes
Track 10 on 'Dangerous Woman'

'Sometimes' is that slow sultry dance moment *.* It's weird because I never think of it as a highlight, just a good song but when I was compiling this list I realised: this should be on here laugh.gif It started out at like 24th but I eventually put it here, hard work gets a seat! A few people have complimented the middle 8 as the best part but I don't see that lol, for me it's all about those verses and that chorus...ugh, the catchinesss. I think when I first heard this and it came on with the guitar intro I was like 'here we go again, filler' but the start misleads you into thinking it's gonna be way more basic than it is!

Favourite Lyrics: Now all my emotions
Are all 'cause of you
'Cause we're collectin' moments
Tattoos on my mind

Posted by: Jordan Lee 30th May 2020, 01:22 AM

love fake smile wub.gif initially it was my favourite non single during release week although I now think ghostin and bloodline overtook it.

Also justice for Tattooed Heart!!! That’s the best track on Yours Truly for me.

Posted by: Jade 30th May 2020, 08:25 AM

So glad that ‘Sometimes’ is here wub.gif I didn’t realise how underrated it was on the forum until recently ohmy.gif the whole song is so warm, I just love it! ‘fake smile’ is pretty good also, I like the retro feel to it and the lyrics are very raw.

15. Everytime
Track 8 on 'Sweetener'

Relatable bop passing through! 'Everytime' at Track 8 is the first album track on 'Sweetener' not to be produced by Pharrell and although I enjoy all but one of his productions on the album, this trap-pop sound comes as a welcome relief and I think I speak for l i t e r a l l y everyone when I say that :') Although I rarely listen to the album in order so I wasn't that bothered. But anyway, obviously a huge part of the reason this is so high is this fresh production. It's hard NOT to impress me with Urban/trap pop and this does the trick, it's such a sway-along track laugh.gif But more than that, the lyrics resonate. I remember at the time I got into this I had such an embarrassing straight crush and I can't keep secrets so I told one person then everyone knew so all my friends were like omg you are an idiot, and this was also the time I started going out to parties so as you can imagine it's a good match *___* There's not much else to say for this one other than it's a fantastic, more than solid song, I know solid is a weird descriptor for a song I adore but in the context of this rate with the quality level...fab song.

Favourite Lyrics: They keep telling me to let go
But I don't really let go when I say so
I get drunk, pretend that I'm over it
Self-destruct, show up like an idiot

14. Get On Your Knees
Track 4 on 'The Pinkprint'

Okay something perhaps unexpected here ohmy.gif Whatever you think of Nicki, you can't deny her and Ariana's friendship makes magic in the studio (or at least you can't if you know a bop when you hear one x) and 'Get On Your Knees' is no different. The opening intro lets you know what this song will be like as soon as Nicki drops her 'mm' aka a raunchy bop *.* Ariana's parts especially slay, the bridge is that part for dancing in your room cheeseblock.png Nicki is on fire as well, although in Ari collab terms I think she's even better in 'Bed' which would absolutely be getting a feature here if it wasn't a single, I mean it was so it's a moot point sadly kink.gif When Nicki gets it, she feckin gets it. She has the perfect amount of sass and seductiveness to make this a fabulous collab. Well done Nicki/Ari wub.gif Another of their songs may be coming up idk what even is the light is coming

Favourite Lyrics: I don't need a pretty poet
Ooh, gettin' all emotional [Ariana]
Make-make-make me way smarter
Like you was a magician [Nicki]
And before I let you walk
You gotta show me how you crawl [Both]

'everytime' is beautiful wub.gif probably my favourite album track from 'Sweetener'. The one issue I had with it for a while is that I'd always forget how it went as the title didn't jog my memory too well. If it was called 'Back To You' (Mollie impakt) then that wouldn't have been a problem laugh.gif but yes, the song is so ingrained now (however many listens later) that it's no longer an issue. A highlight of tour was the huge "why does god keep bringing me... BACK TO YOUUUUU" note, chills *.*

Omg I didn't even think about the possibility of 'Get On Your Knees' being here! I made myself familiar with 'The Pink Print' about 5 years ago, because my friend had a spare ticket to the accompanying Nicki tour and asked me to go (had a great time until I fainted oops xx) and 'Get On Your Knees' was an instant highlight! Ari really kills the chorus and I love the drama of the production at the same time as her vocals too. This soooo should've been a single with a killer video!

Thanks again Jade wub.gif Omg I need to edit her wiki to add Mollie King as one of her influences, we stan a trendsetter. Don't mention the tour, it just gives me flashbacks to the Glasgow date selling out in one minute cry.gif (I hope you had a fab time x)

I, the king of surprises cheeseblock.png I love 'The Pinkprint' so much! Nicki was such a queen back then...shame her era of the same name couldn't live up </3

One more update then we're at the top 10 ooo. Any more comments would be much appreciated amigos Michelle.png

13. Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart
Track 10 on 'My Everything'

The first of two 'My Everything' tracks to drop out close to the top 10, 'Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart' sees Ari in her ballad element. As much as I adore all of her albums I wish did more of this style now sad.gif Ik I've repeated myself so much lol (me + words = messy) but the only word I can use for JALBOYH is beautiful. From the ooh's at the start you know you're in for a treat, and after simply very good verses the chorus elevates it to wonderful. The song is relatable for anyone with an unrequited love or crush I think, aka the story of my life so far :') That's why it has such a special place in so many fans' hearts. I acc really debated what order these two would be in, but for reasons later in the post the other song *just* had that edge.

Favourite lyrics: And I'll still be a fool
I'm a fool for you
I don't ever tell you how I really feel
'Cause I can't find the words to say what I mean
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh, oh-oh-oh (not really a lyric but so gorgeous wub.gif)

12. Best Mistake
Track 6 on 'My Everything

Favourite Lyrics: Break up, make up
Total waste of time
Can we please make up our minds and stop acting like we’re blind? [Ariana]
How can we keep the feelings fresh?
How do we zip lock it? [Big Sean]

On my first ever listen to 'My Everything' fairly recently, 'Best Mistake' was NOT a stand out, but shit that piano-hip hop backing could never not worm it's way into my head wub.gif In man ways this could be a Dangerous Woman track, with the darker vibe being something different on the My Everything album. It suits her vocals perfectly and ensures the song is one of those that actually improves with a rap feature. Big Sean is surprisingly brilliant, his rap is cleverly written (references to TikTok before it even existed *____*) and I'd go as far as to say it's the actual highlight ohmy.gif His moody, dry flow is simply perfect for the backing, which as I said is glorious <3 What even happened to him? I guess we won't be getting any more Ariana collabs from him any time soon but I highkey wouldn't complain if they worked together again. But yeah I just couldn't put this any lower, the atmosphere of the song is a phat mood and dark Ariana is always a fave, so it's not a shock that this has quickly become an all-time album track highlight.

Oops I fell behind on this a bit kink.gif

Everytime & Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart are huge highlights for me. Both would be very high up if I were to rank my favourite album tracks too. Everytime is a song I can't help but sing along to everytime I hear it and JALBOYH is such a beautiful ballad. heart.gif

'Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart' is beautiful wub.gif us having so many viable options for the AF Idol ballad round made me truly realise what a brilliant balladeer she is. 'My Everything' in general is great for the slower songs actually. Cool to see 'Best Mistake' up high as well as that one seems very underrated! I love the hip-hop flavoured piano backing too and the passionate bridge. Looking forward to seeing what has made your top 10! (well, 11 kink.gif)

11. Why Try

'Why Try' was the first new track on 'My Everything' when I first listened to it not too long ago (minus 'Intro' which is of course in the top 10 easily xx) and it stood out to me, but merely as 'very good'. But as the album made more of an impression on me and I grew to love it on a similar level to her last three, this track revealed itself as not just an LP highlight but a career one (album tracks-wise obvs) as well. It should be just a nice simple song, but it displays a real maturity in the lyrics (I'd say generally her lyrics have got better and better over time but this is right up there with her recent standards) and most importantly, it's catchy as f***. The long notes, whyyyyyyyyyy tryyyyyyyyy etc and the na na na nas (the substance in this commentary cheeseblock.png) are breathtaking, a moment. Maybe this is a surprising choice but it's a testament to how GOOD this is that it's almost top 10 already. <3

Favourite Lyrics: I'm loving the pain
I never wanna live without it
So why do we try?
You and I redefine being lovesick
Lovesick, lovesick

10. The Light is Coming
Track 3 on 'Sweetener'

TOP 10 TIME cheeseblock.png (Promise I'll start doing this at a time other than late at night eventually x)

We start off with one of the most divisive tracks of Ariana's career 'The Light Is Coming'. The song clearly has a political nature by lyrics such as 'to bring back everything the darkness stole' as well as those below which hint at fanatic supporters of certain causes/people refusing to listen and engage. I wonder who Michelle.png It also features our favourite problematic rapper from Trinidad, Nicki Minaj but honestly she gives me nothing on this song, another Get On Your Knees or Side To Side this isn't. This and Missy's half-dead verse on 'Borderline', Sweetener is that phoned in features album *______* But that doesn't matter if it's a brilliant song, which this is. Idec about the sample, I'm used to it and if you go into what is being said, it fits the song. The beat may be receptive, but again who cares when it's this good? *.* As I said in a thread recently also, the relative coldness of the song reflects for me how the light ISN'T necessarily coming if you get my drift, in many ways it's quite a sad song. You could say it's like Chromatica, not sonically but in that she's using happy beats for painful times. This gets so much hate anyway and it's so undeserved cry.gif

Favourite Lyrics: "What did she say?," "What did he say?"
You don't listen 'cause you know everything
You don't even need dreams
How can they tell you shit that you've been through?
They are so confused, who cares about their rationale?

Posted by: Jade 5th June 2020, 08:03 AM

Great start to the top 10 heart.gif possibly the most divisive song from Ariana's discography on here ohmy.gif I can understand people's criticisms but I've always found it highly infectious. Honestly in my top 5 of 'Sweetener' after the singles and 'everytime'!

09. In My Head
Track 9 on 'thank u, next'

I doubt this would feature on many's personal top 10s but 'In My Head' easily makes the cut for me. At the time I had this crush (the same one oop) on someone who is a pretty shit person but I just ignored that for some reason so the song resonated, even though a years-long relationship of Ariana's can hardly be compared to a stupid crush of mine but you know :') The production is absolutely superb and Ariana's icy vocals are perfect. The trap breakdown near the end of the song is a beauty, it's a cliche but it took the song to another level. Trap is something that's always suited Ariana but the darker sound in this puts it above her other experiments with the genre. I forgot this actually had a pointless video :') Deserves so much more. Wonderful song wub.gif

Favourite Lyrics: My imagination's too creative
They see demon,
I see angel
I invented you
Your Gucci tennis shoes
Runnin' from your issues
Painted a picture,
I thought I drew you well

Omg what an amazing choice wub.gif the decision to use it in the Vogue campaign was a little random but the further exposure actually helped the song click more with me *.* the trappy production, vocals when she says the title + mental health/relationship struggles in the lyrics are all brilliant!

08. Let Me Love You (feat. Lil Wayne)
Track 6 on 'Dangerous Woman'

Since when did this have a video? laugh.gif As soon as I started devising this countdown, I knew 'Let Me Love You' was deffo in the top 10. And how deserving is it? wub.gif The plushy, warm R&B beats on this song are the definition of perfection and I'm not even kidding, the way the R&B production progresses as the song goes and the bass is cranked up is fab sonically. Ariana's soft vocals in the first verse set the stage, preparing us for a sensual bop which has become an all-time highlight. Lil Wayne is in good form as well, he doesn't feel like a rent-a-rapper feature but someone that adds a lot to it. I can't think of anything negative about this song, just let me looooooooooove you <3

Favourite Lyrics: I just broke up with my ex
You're the one I'm feeling as I'm laying on your chest
And I ain't tryna rush you, but goddamn, I'm a mess, mess, mess
And if it feels right, promise I don't mind
And if it feels right, promise I'll stay here all night
[Ariana]
My name change from Lil Wayne to Ooh Wayne [Lil Wayne]

07. Borderline (feat. Missy Elliot)
Track 11 on 'Sweetener'

Let's get the 'bad' bit out of the way: I can't disagree that Missy's part is underwhelming. Otherwise? Slay me Ariana/Pharrell this is actual perfection cry.gif I've said before on this countdown how I love anything Ariana does that's R&B (not her first album though tearsmile.gif) but this is 90's R&B turned up to the max, with a dreamy, almost dancehall vibe to it. The production flows through 'Borderline' so effortlessly and that's what makes me adore it so much. The song is about not being ready for a relationship and has a vunerable sexiness to it if that backs sense, and the instrumental just FITS. People have said the vocals don't suit the backing but I couldn't disagree more omg, her voice has the vulnerability and tenderness just right for the softness of the beats. Ariana has said she'd put it in her top 5 of the album, she knows wub.gif (still only performed it 37/101 times on tour tho oop) Anyway this is the most gorgeous track ever, one of my besties who doesn't even like Ari that much randomly loves this laugh.gif Taste!

Favourite Lyrics: You know I'm the wifey type, babe
You know I be one of a kind, oh whoa
Once you tastin' my ice cream, I bet you won't ever leave
I know it's hard to believe
Chasin' you, no, I won't stop tryin’
Just meet me at the borderline

06. Goodnight n Go
Track 13 on 'Sweetener'

Yasss you're getting two updates in a night to make up for this drought, this to win BuzzJack moment of the year *____* Another track from Sweetener, the haunting 'Goodnight n Go' falls just short of the top 5. I can reveal this is the last Sweetener track standing. Goodnight n Go is an interpretation of the song by Imogen Heap of the same name and I think the original is basically this minus the trappy moments so I need to check it out!! When I listened to this you're like oh it's nice then the trap kicks in and as anyone who's paid attention to this'll know, that do be a winner cheeseblock.png But it's actually not that putting the track so high in the end. The bits of the original song in this mix eventually became the most beautiful for me, the 'wanna say goodnight' section as the song closes gives me chills to this day. I can't fault this at all, the breathy vocals are magical and stunning to listen to. Aaaah I love this so much <3 The top 5 were solid though, it wasn't hard to cut this!

Favourite Lyrics: Lately, all I want is you on top of me
You know where your hands should be
One of these days
You'll miss your train and come stay with me
Wanna say goodnight
Honey, say goodnight and go

Posted by: Jordan Lee 11th June 2020, 11:45 PM

goodnight n go is lush!

The way I have that era on my devices too means that’s actually the final song on the album how I listen to it (if anyone wants my tracklisting pls PM me and see if it works for you).

I love it though. It’s really soothing, ethereal almost dream like and I love how natural her voice sounds on it too. It’s not like a huge moment vocally the way things like God is a woman or breathin are where we get those belts but her tone and the way she uses her voice softly really just works for this song!

Commercially I think we could’ve had success with this too had it gotten a single push. It’s quite festive and wintery I could just visualise a Xmas set video for this song for some reason. But lovely to see that so high.

borderline being high is a surprise! Not that I dislike it though. It’s a real throwback sound I don’t really think Missy adds much to the song though. Shout out to the “once you’ve tasted my ice-cream” line though!

Posted by: Jade 12th June 2020, 08:18 AM

I do quite like 'borderline' but it's not a massive standout from 'Sweetener' for me. A Missy collab sounds amazing on paper but I was slightly underwhelmed by both this and 'How Ya Doin?' with Little Mix during the 2010s. I did enjoy her recent feature on 'Tempo' by Lizzo quite a bit at least! On 'borderline' I do like the production and Ariana sounds great but I always find that it's quite low when ranking the whole album. Perhaps it's just tough competition. 'goodnight n go' on the other hand... heart.gif that's always an effortless favourite from the album! I too have not checked out the original (oops, I do like what I've heard of Imogen's music) but I really love Ariana's version. "We'd be greeeatt togetheeeer" is one of my favourite vocal moments on the entire album. <3

A big YES for having 'in my head' in your top 10 that song really is SO underrated. 'Let Me Love You' and 'goodnight n go' are BIG favourites of mine too.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 12th June 2020, 11:06 AM

I’d definitely recommend Imogen’s goodnight n go.

Arianas version has slightly different lyrics but the instrumentals are very similar and some of the song is the same like the “why’d you have to be so cute”.

They’re both sung in a soft tone too. Ariana does kinda make it her own though it’s not a direct copy but I like how she kept aspects of the original. Imogen’s one of her idols though isn’t she so I guess this was a huge deal for her to be able to cover something by her.

05. Bloodline
Track 4 on 'thank u, next'

Not me preparing to write a tribute to Shangela then remembering it's NASA she features on tearsmile.gif 'Bloodline' is the 2nd song from thank u, next in the top 10. As much as I love the lyrics (lowkey her funniest ever) they're not what I come to this for, it's just pure pop perfection wub.gif The reggae-trap-pop is almost a genre of it's own and it bops so hard. I love how anthemic the song is and the last chorus after the middle 8 slaps the absolute hardest. Sheesh cheeseblock.png This had to be in the top 5, it's too much of a tune not to be!

Favourite Lyrics: Get it like you love me
But you don't, boy, it's just for show
And no need to apologize, no
But you gon' have to let this shit go
I know what you think, what you think you see
I know what you looking for, but I'm complete

Posted by: Jade 12th June 2020, 10:58 PM

'bloodline' peaked in my affections very early on unfortunately but it's still solid and it was a foolish move not to release it as a single! I think it could've been a 'Side To Side' type hit. This era had a lot more mileage in general really D: ah well, at least it means there's a lot of fan favourite album tracks to be found.

bloodline really did deserve single treatment I think it could’ve been even bigger than break up with your gf I’m bored if it had gotten a single push. I adore it. It’s a sure fire banger what hasn’t aged at all for me!

Ty Jade! Aw I think I remember you saying that in the listenthrough the other day, I kinda get how it could burn out quickly as it's extremely instant. It was a top 5 hit in the making and they just ditched it Neyde.png

QUOTE(Jordan Lee @ Jun 13 2020, 12:49 AM) *
bloodline really did deserve single treatment I think it could’ve been even bigger than break up with your gf I’m bored if it had gotten a single push. I adore it. It’s a sure fire banger what hasn’t aged at all for me!

Ty Jordan! As much as I adore Break up, it wasn't an especially long running hit, bearing in mind it was a #1 single. I think Bloodline could've gotten more longevity for sure.

4. Needy
Track 2 on 'thank u, next'

I can't see this being in 4th place on many people's countdowns but who gives? 'Needy' is that bitch. Generic comment ik but I just vibe so hard with this song *.* The lyrics are my favourite by her of any song on this countdown, they click with the psychotic beat to produce a MOOD of a song. The beat is plodding but in a...great way? I didn't want to cram the favourite lyrics part but honourable mention goes to 'sorry if I say sorry way too much', hands up who relates cheeseblock.png It's this high (and even challenged for top three) because it's in that special category of songs I wanna lie down and just take in, feeling those lyrics. It's a glorious twisted anthem which deserves all your love! I would've had this as the opener actually, it sums up the album better than Imagine imo

Favourite Lyrics: Passionate, but I don't give no f***s
I admit that I'm a lil' messed up
And I can be needy, way too damn needy
I can be needy, tell me how good it feels to be needed
You can go ahead and call me selfish
But after all this damage, I can’t help it (Help it)

King of unpopular opinions laugh.gif 'needy' has never been a highlight for me but I do think that its lyrical content is its strength so I get you on that <3

3. Greedy
Track 7 on 'Dangerous Woman'

Come on, this had to be here laugh.gif 'Greedy' is an absolute fan fave, and deserved. It's cliche af but the only term that comes to mind talking about this song is pop perfection, it's crammed to the BRIM with pop hooks, the moment that prolonged 'greedaaaaaay' strikes and the beat kicks in you realise you're in for a pop ride. What a bedroom 2am bop anthem though, 'I ain't talking money I'm just physically obsessed' is that singalong lyric *.* I love the sonic diversity as well, the dreamy instrumental in the pre-chorus (been in that state of mind x2 jump.gif) and of course the key change which unlocks the door to gay heaven. It's predictable to have this up here but everyone loves it for a reason.

Favourite Lyrics: Been in this state of mind, been in this state of mind
Baby, you got lucky, 'cause you're rocking with the best and I'm greedy
I ain't talking money, I'm just physically obsessed
You know that I'm coming tonight (ah)

That's more like it cheeseblock.png my favourites have shuffled around a lot over the years when it comes to 'Dangerous Woman' but 'Greedy' has been my #1 from it since day 1 <3 so irresistibly feel-good and as you say, that key change just takes you to another dimension *.* the single that never was!!

Needy & Greedy are both great!

2. Thinking Bout You
Final track on 'Dangerous Woman'

Too many lyrics ik but I couldn't cut any of those cry.gif Just missing out is the glorious, the MAJESTIC 'Thinking Bout You'. My 'journey' with this song so to speak was weird, I payed it little attention for 3 years then whoosh. In. love. She really did that. I've said before that Ariana is so good at embodying that feeling of being in love and infatuated and this song and my #1 are the most stunning examples of those. I'm terrible at long commentary so I'll keep my adoration short and sweet, I also feel like I could do a critical essay on this song praising it :') My English dissertation at uni, "A study of how Ariana Grande describes love in 'Thinking Bout You' and '[My #1]". Ariana's vocals go to exactly the right place, her delivery of 'where the hell are you' (snappy yet romantic queen *____*) and in the middle 8 in general is <3 Yeah this is incredible and y'all better agree.

Favourite Lyrics: Yeah, I been missing you
Where the hell are you, oh, when I need you?
Oh, I don't have you here with me
But at least I have the memory
I tried to make it through the night
But I can't control my mind
Had my eyes rolling back
Had me arching my back

Fantastic runner up wub.gif 'Thinkin Bout You' was a bit of a slow burner for me too but now I totally adore it - easily in my top 5 of 'Dangerous Woman'! I agree that the middle 8 is a particular highlight heart.gif I'm gutted that we weren't able to unleash it in AF Idol but hopefully next time!

1. Touch It
Track 13 on 'Dangerous Woman (Deluxe manson.gif)'

Well what else was it gonna be? Michelle.png First of all Ari, 'Touch It' is not boring and when I see you for the first time next era you will perform it k? kink.gif And Track 13 on the deluxe, meaning most people who went into HMV or ASDA to purchase the album won't even have it? Ari please.

But she made up for all that by producing this f***ing masterpiece. Not just her best album track, but her best song. Ever. I love her songs that build but this does it in the most incredible way possible, the relative minimality in Verse 1 progressing to that smooth, effortless chorus which then turns into a BREATHTAKING second chorus. Then you get a brief chance to come down from the high at the middle 8 before that last chorus goes and goes and goes, every second getting more pulsating. My use of words probably seems a bit much :') but it's honestly how I feel about 'Touch It'. As I said for #2, it just embodies love, whether that be in a relationship (lol) or even a crush. It's sensual but never unclassy or anything. Wow. cheeseblock.png

Favourite Lyrics: How do I make the phone ring?
Why do I even care?
How are you all around me when you're not really there?
When you're not really there?

How do I feel you on me when you're not on my skin?
Why do you say you want me, then tell me "I'm not coming in"?
Baby, just come on in

'Cause every time I'm with you, I go into a zone
And I remember all the places you wanna go
Take me all the way
Ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it
'Cause every time I see you, I don't wanna behave
I'm tired of being patient, so let's pick up the pace
Take me all the way
Ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it

How do you know I'm breathing, when I'm holding my breath?
Why don't we face the danger just for the night and forget?
Baby, let's just forget

Remind me why we're taking a break
It's obviously insane
'Cause we both know what we want
So why don't we fall in love?
Baby, let's fall in love

'Cause every time I'm with you, I go into a zone
And I remember all the places you wanna go
Take me all the way
Ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it

'Cause every time I see you, I don't wanna behave
I'm tired of being patient, so let's pick up the pace
Take me all the way
Ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it
Oh, ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it
Baby, ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it
Baby, ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it
Ain't nobody gonna touch it

Remind me why we're taking a break
It's obviously insane
'Cause we both know what we want
So why don't we fall in love?
Baby, let's be in love

'Cause every time I'm with you, I go into a zone
And I remember all the places you wanna go
Take me all the way
Ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it

'Cause every time I see you, I don't wanna behave
I'm tired of being patient, so let's pick up the pace
Take me all the way
Ain't nobody gonna touch it, touch it, touch it
Baby, ain't nobody gonna
Baby, ain't nobody gonna
Baby, ain't nobody gonna

Amazing choice of #1! wub.gif I approve of an entirely 'Dangerous Woman' top 3 <3 I still can't believe Ariana thinks 'Touch It' is boring but at least BuzzJack knows where it's at - it seems to have a lot of stans on here and of course finished top 3 in the 'Dangerous Woman' survivor *.* another one that fell short of getting a chance to shine in AF Idol, some of these themed rounds suited Ariana so well - imagine your bonus tracks being this good!! Such a soaring chorus <3

Really enjoyed this countdown happy.gif
