BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 18th February 2019, 03:54 AM

Ariana Grande could keep hold of the top two singles, with Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man's Giant looking to challenge following some big promo slots. Expect new entries for Cardi B & Bruno Mars' Please Me, Zedd & Katy Perry's 365 and YUNGBLUD/Halsey/Travis Barker's 11 Minutes

Ariana's thank u next heads for a second week at #1 on the album chart. Avril Lavigne can return to the top 10 with her sixth album Head Above Water, other new releases include Chaka Khan's Hello Happiness, D-Block Europe and Ladytron. Wednesday's BRIT Awards should provide a few boosts also, with the likes of George Ezra, The 1975 and Little Mix performing.

Obviously The Greatest Showman will benefit the most from BRITs with Hugh Jackman performing.

Posted by: Jordan Lee 18th February 2019, 12:30 PM

I’m thinking TGS / P!nk and Jorja will benefit the most on albums front. Jorja being least known performer if she does a performance which showcases her voice well I think her album will benefit in a big way and it’ll draw her into a whole new audience who may previously be unaware of her solo material.

Calvin on singles should extend his iTunes lead. P!nks new lead single coming may also enter high if that’s part of her performance.

The performance isn't until Wednesday evening though, so the effect will mostly be in next week's chart.

Posted by: danG 18th February 2019, 12:38 PM

There'll be a noticeable effect this week too, the performance boosts are very instantaneous on iTunes.
Probably won't be enough for TGS to overtake Ariana this week but it'll have a sales increase.

It's a pity it's on ACR, it would be #9 otherwise.

Yes and at the same time that fricking Lost Without You pops up to terrorize top ten every other week, such a shame tongue.gif

Posted by: Glenn 69 18th February 2019, 05:32 PM

I can't see Lost Without You avoiding ACR the week after next.

Which is just as well because the next single is coming on 1st March according to Freya herself on Facebook

Posted by: Bré 18th February 2019, 05:35 PM

Looks like another totally unreliable update with too much missing data to really make any conclusions (CamelPhat as high as #23 again, I wish) - interesting that the 2 Ariana songs are still so close together though and 'Giant' really isn't that far behind now as well, I wouldn't be surprised if Calvin ends up climbing to the top spot next week if his BRITs performance gives him a streaming boost. Hope 'break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored' will stay at #1 for this week at least, I'm liking it quite a bit more than '7 rings' now.

Also Drake's mixtape re-release is higher than I thought it'd be considering it barely impacted the Spotify top 200 at all!

Glad to see Cadet is back on SCR as well, hope he'll manage to stay top 20.

You complain about great rap songs being in the chart, so in that case karma will get to you as well tongue.gif

Posted by: danG 18th February 2019, 05:40 PM

'7 rings' is back ahead of 'break up' on YouTube so that could just push it ahead given how close the two are on Spotify and iTunes (hard to tell what's doing better on Apple Music because of multiple versions but I guess they're close there too).

Posted by: Jordan Lee 18th February 2019, 05:44 PM

Hope ASIB remains top 3.

Oscars is next week too isn’t it so should get another boost then wub.gif

It’s now Gagas second longest running top ten album I believe it took over from Born This Way a few weeks ago.

The Fame miles ahead though.

Why are sales for the charity version of LALO contributing towards the original version. Sales for both versions should be separated in that case like with "Lay Me Down" in 2015

Posted by: danG 18th February 2019, 05:54 PM

That confused me too especially as the new version is credited to Red Hot Chili Pipers feat. Tom Walker, but the OCC do whatever the OCC like because the OCC are the OCC.

Posted by: vancey 18th February 2019, 06:31 PM

Is it the latest trend to have song titles all in lower case? I count six on Monday's update (although three are Ariana). I feel like I'm looking at Limewire's top 40 downloads.

Songs on ACR just have their streaming contribution halved. Normally, 100 premium streams or 600 free streams equal 1 sale unit. On ACR it's 200 or 1,200 respectively.

Bon Appetit only debuted at #40 despite instant A list on Radio 1, big capital support and an automatically high place on Hot Hits. 365 has none of those things and is coming to outpeak it. Swish Swish also debuted at 40.

Zedd’s last single took 4 weeks to go top 40, too and ended up being massive.

Are you serious right now? Comparing Katy's FLOP singles to a new single that was released with a video + with a lot of support on all streaming services? Not to mention this is Katy's comeback as she hasn't had a new single out in a while. Yes, Zedd is the main artist but this single has Katy Perry all over it. Sounds like something from her previous album and also the video couldn't be more Katy Perry.

The fact is - they are flopping with this single, and you simply cannot spin it around making it seem they are doing okay. Not debuting in the top 30 is horrendous.

Posted by: danG 18th February 2019, 10:01 PM

Let's at least wait a month before calling '365' a flop. Most songs now climb to their peak, there's still a good chance this will be a reasonably big top 10 hit.

Agreed; you can't really write off a song after less than a week.

I mean the majority of songs take a while to take off and grow to their peak

Posted by: 365 18th February 2019, 10:25 PM

I think it’s fairly safe to say that Katy Perry’s name isn’t what it once was and she can’t sell singles off of just her name the way she used to be able to sadly. To have a hit she will have to do what most other artists have to do and wait for airplay to build up and for the song to be moved up high on the playlists.

This is a little dramatic. I wouldn't even consider it an underperformance so far. Off the back of 'Prism' perhaps, but 'Witness' was a pretty disastrous era and the general public were never going to be that receptive to new Katy Perry music. I'm also struggling to see why it shouldn't be compared to 'Bon Appetit'? It too was a new single that received instant radio/streaming support.

Katy's days of big hits and big album sales have past but she could still achieve moderate success.

Posted by: 365 19th February 2019, 11:02 PM

QUOTE(slowdown73 @ Feb 19 2019, 08:46 PM) *
I would agree. I think she will struggle now. The momentum to her career seems to have been lost since witness.

I did expect this to be doing slightly better but only because i expected more support straight away. I didn’t expect Radio 1 and especially Capital not be straight on board, as well as Spotify placing it so low on Hot Hits. Particularly, off the back of The Middle’s success. So yeah, it seems like it’ll be one to be patient with.

Posted by: sammy01 19th February 2019, 11:13 PM

Katy just needed to properly disappear for a couple of years. People needed to miss her, she could have come back with a bang then.

Posted by: Whoody4Paramore 19th February 2019, 11:18 PM

The problem is that Katy's not getting any younger, and ageism sadly seems to be a thing with pop music listeners. About mid 30 seems to be the cutoff for pop artists and they're less likely to be playlisted by R1/Capital etc, which is really annoying.

Having said that, Pink's 39 and she's still doing very well.

Posted by: Envoirment 19th February 2019, 11:26 PM

I think the song just needs to be given a bit more time to take off? The last 3 big hits of Zedd's all took 7-9 weeks to reach their peak positions and debuted at #33/#53/#92 respectively (Stay/The Middle/Starving).

Posted by: SweetButJonjo👻 20th February 2019, 01:15 AM

Classic Buzzjack. Ready to call a song that is 5 days old a flop just coz it's off to a slow start. :')

People really need to stop saying something is a "flop" if it's charting until about week 6 or 7 when we know for sure it's not taking off or whatever. In this day and age, songs take ages to take off. Y'all know this and you still wanna dub it a flop as soon as it's been released.

But this isn’t off the back of The Middle’s success. It’s off the back of the Lost In Japan remix that didn’t really make much of an impact, and Happy Now didn’t exactly set the charts alight either. Even then I’m glad that the chart climbs are starting to be a little more organic.

indeed. there's only a few hundred between them but I think it's more likely that 'needy' will remain ahead.

I imagine it will be Shotgun, as he's been nominated for Best Single for that.

They’ve apparently got a surprise performer tonight. If so, I hope it ain’t Anne-Marie

They'd have announced Anne Marie if she was performing, it's not particularly special.

Wasn't The Chainsmokers/Coldplay a couple of years ago unannounced?

Take That Odyssey appears to have gained a few valentines sales last weekend taking it to a Top 25 position.
Its chart run is better than i thought it would have managed based on their previous Wonderland chart run.

Posted by: Codester X 20th February 2019, 04:39 PM

That special slot has to be either Ariana or Cardi/Bruno doing Please Me, as far as promo goes those are the most probable outcomes

lol @ people thinking Anne-Marie. does she even have any material out to promote other than whatever she’s nominated for?

Posted by: 777666jason 20th February 2019, 04:45 PM

Buying the Brit award has always been quite obvious. You can usually tell who is going to get an award based on who is performing.

Brits are always good for some entertainment value. I watch them more now for the performance hiccups etc than the actual awards themselves.

This is a fact. Lily Allen wrote about it in her book. It's all industry politics.

Your opinions alone don't decide the BRIT nominations. Has it occurred to you that other people might actually enjoy the Anne-Marie album? :') I mean, in my opinion, it's a great pop album filled with loads of hit-worthy tracks and bags of personality.

Posted by: danG 20th February 2019, 10:29 PM

It'd have to be high on Hot Hits UK, P!nk doesn't have a huge streaming fanbase (What About Us had a https://kworb.net/spotify/track/0Qh38w01QRXK6KHIv0e3hb.html so I'd expect the new one to perform similarly)

I don't see why Anne-Marie shouldn't have got nominated for Best Album? Surely a *Brit* award should be representative of the music that the general public thought was the best, therefore Anne-Marie was an obvious choice to get nominated.

Posted by: Glenn 69 21st February 2019, 10:04 AM

I also hope Calvin gets a chart boost this week and think it would be nice to see Pink in the Top 10

Was surprised Jorja Smith beat Anne Marie and Jess Glynne to the Gong and surprised Lily Allen beat Dua Lipa to a place on the shortlist

I also thought Freya Ridings might have been up for British Breakthrough Act given that at the time of the nominations being announced she had the same number of hits as Tom Walker. I really hope she isn't a one hit wonder
