It will be available on CD but £12 for five songs is expensive. Click on the Pledgemusic link above.

First track is good but rest sound bit boring to be honest.

£1.99 on iTunes for the 5 tracks.

This looks awesome! He does do a good cover does Will, and he always picks quite unusual songs as well to cover, I look forward to hearing this smile.gif

I'm pleased he's branching out doing this, vinyl is a real treat too. His covers are second to none and the samples sound very nicely produced and his voice as brilliant as usual. cheer.gif

If these are Summer Covers I hope we'll also see one for every season, he seems to be saying there will be more in the pipeline, and he has sung so much over the years so will have plenty of scope to choose.

3. And my beloved flat cap, which I wore throughout my time in Pop Idol!

4. I am also giving away a signed CD/Vinyl bundle of my EP.

Although I wasnt that fussed at the concept of jazz covers, but looking forward to him reeleasing something, I really love it. I downloaded last night when the iTunes preorder notice came in.

His voice is just wow, I particularly love One World. wub.gif

Just received my ep in the post. Lovely unexpected surprise that it's signed. biggrin.gif

Sublime.... Will's vocals recorded live with no extraneous music - I can see why it is considered a jazz ep - definitely a jazz club feel arrangement - Love it.

I've heard his voice live so many times but it never fails to push all the right buttons. wub.gif

Not a fan of the first 2 songs but downloaded the other 3 ...loving them so far wub.gif

I know Will is not going after a chart entry with this but I'm not sure on the rules for EPs but could this chart in either the singles or album chart? If sales count towards albums he could chart as it's been around the #20 mark on iTunes and presuming he would have shifted quite a few physicals/bundles?

Posted by: truly talented 28th August 2016, 12:23 PM

I wouldn't think an ep is eligible to chart in either chart. unsure.gif

Great honest review which I definitely agree with. I'm also hoping for Echoes Part 2.

Will Young – Summer Covers EP review

Will Young is at a bit of a crossroads in his career right now. Having been in the industry since his Pop Idol win in 2002, Will is easily one of the most successful stars to come from a reality TV show. He’s released six albums – four of which have hit number one and five have been certified at least platinum – and toured fairly relentlessly. After the release of his 2011’s Echoes, Will moved from RCA Records and signed a new deal with Island Records to release sixth album 85% Proof. Despite that album hitting number one, it was his lowest selling to date and he parted ways with the label a little over 12 months after starting the deal. Having signed up for the new series of Strictly Come Dancing, Will has just released new EP Summer Covers.

The idea behind Summer Covers was for Will to record some of the covers he’s performed on his tours over the years. The EP features five tracks and it’s actually refreshing to see a covers release that doesn’t go for the obvious. Amongst the five tracks here there are songs from Joni Mitchell (Answer Me, My Love), Ryan Adams (Amy), Buzzcocks (Ever Fallen In Love), The Beatles (I’m Only Sleeping) and John Martyn (One World).

The songs Will has recorded here reflect the diverse range of influences he has and further moves away from the early days of his pop career. Will has always managed to get past his reality show label and be considered as a serious artist who has a genuine interest in music. He’s never been interested in the celebrity side of his job and it’s been fascinating to watch him grow over the years.

Summer Covers switches up Will’s sound yet again. In more recent times he’s experimented with dance rhythms and soulful pop, but Summer Covers takes him into jazz territory particularly on Answer Me, My Love. It’s an opportunity for Will to show off a different side of his voice and he sounds fantastic. If he recorded a full-length jazz album in the future I wouldn’t be surprised as he has the vocal chops to pull it off.

Elsewhere on the EP Will puts a more emotive twist on Ever Fallen In Love, stripping it back so the lyrics are the focus, and he gives his best vocal on the jazz infused take on John Martyn’s One World. Amy is transformed into a simple ditty while a feeling of whimsy is injected into The Beatles’ track I’m Only Sleeping.

Summer Covers is a laidback and cool collection of songs. Honestly I’d rather hear Will performing new original material, and I’m still holding out for a continuation of his Echoes album, but in the meantime this is an interesting listen. It’s clearly a passion project for the singer and as he’s now between labels it’ll be interesting to see what he does next. Appearing on Strictly is sure to boost his profile and remind everyone what a talent he is.

Track Listing: 1. Ever Fallen In Love 2. Amy 3. I’m Only Sleeping 4. One World 5. Answer Me, My Love Record Label: Pledge Music Release Date: 26th August 2016

Review from iN10 magazine in The Sunday Post

Summer Covers
Will Young

" When it comes to cover versions, Will's come a long way since his languid version of The Doors "Light My Fire" in 2002. Recorded live with the jazz band he played with during a residency at the 606 club in London, he takes his time on The Buzzcocks Ever Fallen In Love, building it slowly, while The Beatles I'm Only Sleeping is shot through with jauntiness. As a whole it's not all that summery, but the EP is wonderfully luxuriant. "

OUR VERDICT 8/10

Behind the scenes making of the ep.

Love the balance between the seriousness and the humour and the exquisite vocals of course. Will never fails to make me smile. wub.gif

First mention from Will about being between record deals. As much as I love his voice on this ep I do hope this isn't a long term direction, catering to a very niche market.
