Chart Commentary
Scoring a very easy #1 this week, Anne-Marie jumps 13 places with her new single Heavy. It's her second chart-topper, following Clean Bandit collaboration Rockabye less than a year ago, but is her first as a lead artist. Alarm made #3 in the summer of 2016, while Ciao Adios was extremely unlucky to miss the top spot, colliding with Katy Perry's Chained to the Rhythm and ultimately stalling at #2, despite being one of my songs of the year (and certainly holding up better than Katy's song in my affections). Heavy isn't as good as Ciao Adios for me, but it's still an excellent song and a welcome return to the top spot for Anne-Marie. Anne-Marie 2016 03 Alarm | 2 | 24-32-X-3-4-6-11-19-23-29-32-34-X-39-X (12 non-consecutive weeks) 2016 01 Rockabye (Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie) | FEAT | 27-1-2-2-4-7-9-13-20-21-21-23-35-X (13 weeks) 2017 02 Ciao Adios | 3 | 5-2-5-6-5-7-4-8-9-11-14-16-15-21-26-37-X (16 weeks) 2017 18 Either Way (Snakehips & Anne-Marie feat. Joey Bada$$) | FEAT | 18-27-X (2 weeks) 2017 01 Heavy | 4 | 14-1-... (2+ weeks) One of the most successful dance artists in my chart, Norwegian DJ Kygo has scored four top 10 hits already, although no #1 hit. New single Stargazing enters at #3 this week, meaning that elusive #1 is still out of Kygo's grasp, but it matches the peak of It Ain't Me earlier this year. Kygo's biggest hit remains Firestone, which peaked at #2, behind featured vocalist Conrad Sewell's own single Hold Me Up. Stargazing features Justin Jesso, who scores his very first chart hit. Kygo 2015 02 Firestone (feat. Conrad Sewell) | 1 | 33-23-32-22-18-4-2-3-5-11-12-16-22-24-28-30-40-X (17 weeks) 2015 25 Here For You (feat. Justin Jesso) | 3 | 3-... (1+ weeks) Justin Jesso 2017 03 Stargazing (Kygo feat. Justin Jesso) | 3 | 3-... (1+ weeks) Continuing its ascent, 1-800-273-8255 becomes the first top 10 hit for all three artists involved. The primary artist is American rapper Logic, who is on his very first chart hit. It was also the first chart hit for Khalid, who has since scored a second hit with Lorde on Homemade Dynamite, which debuted at #20 last week. Alessia Cara has a more extensive discography so far, with three previous chart hits, but none higher than #26 until 1-800 came along. Logic 2017 09 1-800-273-8255 (feat. Alessia Cara & Khalid) | 3 | 34-35-15-9-... Khalid, SZA & Post Malone) | FEAT | 20-24-... (2+ weeks) In the album chart, we see an all-new top 2 as Declan McKenna drops two places to #3. Claiming the top spot is Demi Lovato, who achieves her second #1 album in a row, after Confident. Interestingly, despite Confident's #1 peak, it's 2013 album Demi that remains her most successful, having peaked at #2 behind Gabrielle Aplin's English Rain. Demi blocks Australian singer/songwriter Cody Simpson from achieving his fourth #1, alongside his new band The Tide (not the same The Tide who are charting in my singles chart with Naked). Completing the top 5, The Vamps drop 2 spots to #4 with Night & Day (Night Edition), and Jake Bugg scores his fourth top 5 album, and second #5 in a row, with Hearts That Strain. His most successful remains second album Shangri La, which made #1. Demi Lovato 2012 03 Unbroken | 3 | 3-4-6-11-X (4 weeks) 2013 02 Demi | 4 | 2-3-3-6-9-10-9-8-6-10-12-14-13-15-14-15-X (16 weeks) 2015 01 Confident | 5 | 1-3-6-10-15-15-X (6 weeks) 2017 01 Tell Me You Love Me | 6 | 1-... (1 + weeks) Elsewhere in the singles chart, Avicii and Rita Ora rebound up to #4 for a second stint in the top 10. They peaked at #2 behind P!nk's What About Us during the summer, and the current revival has been spurred on by its current UK chart fortunes, much like Paloma Faith's rebound as Crybaby jumps up two spots to #22. It's a busy week for new artist peaks, as Toby Randall, Gabbie Hanna and Cardi B all make their first appearances while Florida Georgia Line and watt both get a new personal best as Hailee Steinfeld collaboration Let Me Go re-enters at #19. Oh I was just about to say how odd that Cody Simpson and The Tide have released an EP together, oops at that name clash.
Yass Avicii rebounding! Not super keen on the new Kygo single myself, I expect it to grow but it's not standing out at all. Good to see Cardi B enter here, glad that's becoming a sizeable UK hit. nice chart! |

Hi Joseph,
Just listening to your #1 from Anne-Marie for the first time now! It’s not what I was expecting to hear, and I can’t see it’s troubling the official Top 40 which is a shame. Nice to see Avicii back on the climb, glad you’re a fan. Hailee Steinfeld’s musical direction is very unclear to me a each single sounds different to me. I’m not yet sold on this new single you’ve charted this week. What an impressive chart run for Swish Swish. And as always, please be sure to check out my chart for this week — Top 40 Countdown by awardinary (W/E 05/10/2017). Nice chart Joseph. |

Hi Joseph!
1. Anne-Marie - Heavy - 14-1- Can't believe you love this so much, I'm just not getting it I won't write it off just yet though, maybe I need to give it more of a chance. 2. Declan McKenna - Brazil - 20-21-24-28-32-7-1-2- 3. Kygo feat. Justin Jesso - Stargazing - 3- ** HIGHEST NEW ENTRY ** More of the same from him but in this case that's no bad thing! 4. Avicii feat. Rita Ora - Lonely Together - 2-6-9-19-21-17-4- ** HIGHEST CLIMBER ** 7. The Tide - Naked - 2-3-7- 10. Matoma & The Vamps - Staying Up - 1-3-6-10- 11. Niall Horan - Too Much to Ask - 7-11- 13. Justin Bieber & BloodPop® - Friends - 5-1-4-4-8-10-13- 14. Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug - Havana - 13-16-21-17-10-11-12-14- 15. Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do - 17-1-2-5-9-15- 17. Paloma Faith - Crybaby - 26-7-16-24-22- 23. Katy Perry feat. Nicki Minaj - Swish Swish - 2-3-5-7-10-14-16-25-32-33-32-32-24-25-20-16-20-23-23- ** LONGEST RUNNER ** 25. Louis Tomlinson feat. Bebe Rexha & Digital Farm Animals - Back to You - 8-1-1-1-3-7-10-14-22-26-29- 31. Cardi B - Bodak Yellow - 31- I swear the instrumental to this is basically Black Beatles or something? I'm not really feeling this but I can see why it's doing well. Though I still haven't worked out what Bodak means lol. 32. Kesha - Praying - 1-3-3-5-4-4-9-13-20-24-28-32- 34. Dua Lipa - New Rules - 4-5-7-7-7-7-11-15-21-25-29-34- 36. JP Cooper - She's On My Mind - 40- September Song was amazing but his singles have been getting progressively worse for me. I did quite like this at first but the chorus annoys me now. Still, hopefully his album will have some good tracks on it. Good stuff as always |

Not super keen on the new Kygo single myself, I expect it to grow but it's not standing out at all. Good to see Cardi B enter here, glad that's becoming a sizeable UK hit. nice chart! Yeah it's a strange coincidence! an actual Cody/The Tide collab would probably be better than this actually. Thanks very much Dan!! Hi Joseph, Great number one Anne-Marie is doing so well lately I am loving new Kygo too Logic and Avicii climbs Hailee's newie is good!! Great Chart Hi Harry, thank you! Hi Joseph, Just listening to your #1 from Anne-Marie for the first time now! Hi Andrew, thanks for commenting! I really hope the predictions for Heavy are wrong, it'd be such a huge shame if it missed the top 40 and it definitely doesn't deserve that. Hailee's bringing some great dance-pop tunes for me, Let Me Go isn't as good as Starving or Most Girls for me but I still enjoy it a fair bit! Swish Swish hasn't gotten old for me yet Hi Joseph! 1. Anne-Marie - Heavy - 14-1- Can't believe you love this so much, I'm just not getting it I won't write it off just yet though, maybe I need to give it more of a chance. 3. Kygo feat. Justin Jesso - Stargazing - 3- ** HIGHEST NEW ENTRY ** More of the same from him but in this case that's no bad thing! 31. Cardi B - Bodak Yellow - 31- I swear the instrumental to this is basically Black Beatles or something? I'm not really feeling this but I can see why it's doing well. Though I still haven't worked out what Bodak means lol. 38. ZAYN feat. Sia - Dusk Till Dawn - 39-38- Stick with this, and hopefully it will grow on you! 40. JP Cooper - She's On My Mind - 40- September Song was amazing but his singles have been getting progressively worse for me. I did quite like this at first but the chorus annoys me now. Still, hopefully his album will have some good tracks on it. Good stuff as always Hi Mango, thanks for the comments! 1. I hope it grows on you! It's the lyrics and her vocals that sell it to me, although I can't help feeling like it'd be better off as a piano ballad rather than a mid-tempo tropical track. 3. Agreed! Kygo knows what works and I'm more than happy for him to stick to it. 31. Bodak Yellow as a title is a parody of Kodak Black, a rapper! The song took a lot of growing but I'm really feeling it now. 38. Well you were right tbh, as you'll see in my next chart 40. September Song is definitely the clear highlight of his discography so far, I need to check out the album soon but I'm not sure he'll top that one unfortunately. Hi Joseph, Dusk Till Dawn getting stuck in its second week Niall holding well Logic Good N.1 Hi Seltin, thanks for commenting!! |
