Films Who Have Been Snubbed At The Oscars

Category Snubbed: Best Actress [Amy Adams], Best Song [Big Eyes- Lana Del Rey], Best Actor [Christoph Waltz]
Despite winning the golden globe for her performance, Amy Adams surprisingly missed out on an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Margaret Keane as Big Eyes was completely shut out from the Oscars. Lana Del Rey missed another nomination with her beautiful song Big Eyes and while not very surprising, Christoph Waltz also missed out

Category Snubbed: Best Picture
I wasn't expecting this to be a contender for best picture at all but it does seem like it was snubbed for best picture considering the other amount of awards it is up for [especially compared to some of the other BP nominees including Selma which I will get to a bit later]. Foxcatcher managed 4 big nominations in the form of directing [massive surprise, don't think anyone was expecting this], 2 acting awards [I wasn't expecting this to happen but others were] and a screenplay nod so it feels quite weird this didn't get a BP nomination considering all these other nominations and the fact that there were only 8 titles up for best picture compared to 9 the last few years.

Category Snubbed: Pretty much all of them
Well it seems the Academy absolutely hated Gone Girl as Rosamund's Pike's performance as Amy Dunne was the only nomination Gone Girl received. I was expecting this to be nominated for best picture, best director and a lot of the smaller categories such as editing and cinematography etc. The biggest snub for this though seems to be in the adapted screenplay category where it looked like it would definitely get a nomination.

Category Snubbed: Best Actor [Jake Gyleenhaal]
It seemed like Jake would get in for his critically acclaimed performance in Nightcrawler which has received nominations at most of the big Award ceremonies [including Golden Globes and Bafta's] but he just missed the cut here.

Category Snubbed: Best Animated Feature
Most people are absolutely completely shocked by this missing out despite its major popularity and fantastic reviews but I am not surprised and also happy that it was snubbed. I actually had this missing out on a nomination a few months ago and in my predictions last night, it was my 5th choice to be nominated. I also find the film significantly overrated, especially those last 15/20 minutes which are awful. However this is still a bit of a shock for one of the biggest grossing films of last year and a film with stunning critical reviews missing out.

I will be doing this for a few days and none of the commentary is copied. Please read and discuss what you are surprised and also predict what other films you are expecting to see [but please use spoiler tags if it is not one of these 5 above for the moment]. The next lot will either be up in half an hour to 1 and a half hours or tomorrow

Whilst I haven't seen any of the Best Picture nominees apart from 'Boyhood', 'Gone Girl' was my favourite film from last year so I'm disappointed it only has one nomination.

Regarding 'The Lego Movie', the film must have 75% animation to qualify which TLM does so I'm surprised about that snub! The Animation categories across the Awards season have all been particularly interesting considering there was no Pixar movie to qualify!

I'm disapointed that 'Yellow Flicker Beat' didn't get a nomination for Best Original Song but that's just because of my personal opinion of the song itself and not taking in the film itself I don't know how they judge that category?

Lego Movie was a big shock. Expected Interstellar to get onto the Best Picture shortlist as well.

I didn't realise/it didn't strike me that 'Foxcatcher' got snubbed in the Best Picture category, which in all honesty I really can't moan at. As a film/picture, it fell completely flat. Some of the performances though, WERE worthy of being nominated. Steve especially. A career best performance from him, imo. Not surprised too much about Jake missing out, I'm sure he would have been 6th/next in line anyway.

'Gone Girl' really should have also been nominated for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay, at the very least! Devastated for it/them. 2nd best film of last year! I've discussed 'Big Eyes' and 'The Lego Movie' in other threads, so won't bang on about them, but TLM in particular is a huge shock/injustice. Also, some people aren't happy that 'Interstellar' was nominated for "Best Sound Mixing", which I actually, sort of agree with them on!

A Most Violent Year
Category Snubbed: Jessica Chastain [Best Supporting Actress], Oscar Issac
While it was unlikely Oscar Issac was going to get a nomination, it is a bit of a surprise that Chastain and the film as a whole was shut out completely from this years Oscars. I was expecting Chastain to get in over Laura Dern for Wild but Laura was actually my 6th choice and my surprise nominee prediction.

Cake
Category Snubbed: Jennifer Aniston [Best Actress]
Well it ended up Jennifer is only nominated for a Razzie instead of an Oscar for this performance [however her Razzie nomination for Cake is in the new category of the redeeming performance award] but I wasn't really expecting her to make it in here but there could have been a small chance anyway as her role has been very well received and she has got a lot of other nominations.

Into The Woods
Category Snubbed: Emily Blunt
Into The Woods did very well all in all so the only minor surprise about it was that Emily missed out on another Oscar nomination in this film.

Selma
Category Snubbed: Best Actor [David Oyelowo], Best Director [Ava DuVernay], Best Original Screenplay, More
While it did seem Selma could disappoint after a poor showing at the Bafta's and a couple of the other award ceremonies, I was not expecting it to be snubbed in so many categories as it only ended up being nominated for Best Picture and Best Song. The most surprising snub is for David Oyelowo's lead performance which I was certainly expecting to be a nominee and a couple of the supporting performances could have also sneaked in. I am also surprised this missed out on best original screenplay to Foxcatcher.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
Category Snubbed: Best Song [Yellow Flicker Beat]
I did think this would miss out but anyway it is a minor surprise that Lorde's Yellow Flicker Beat got snubbed in the best original song category when songs from a couple of completely random films managed to secure nominations

I think Foxcatcher and Gone Girl stood a good chance of being up for Best Picture had there been 10 nominations, not sure why they went with 8 anyway. Didn't really expect them to be up for much other than they are that not withstanding.

Amy Adams not being up is both a surprise and not a surprise I guess, I thought she might have got another nom on the strength of being well liked and 'oh she deserves another shot' but it's not like she won't be up again next year or the year after or whatever. It might do her good to have a break and then come back with THE role to finally bag her the Oscar.

The one thing that did surprise me was The Hobbit not being rewarded with at least a handful of technical awards. I was expecting it have make up, sound, visual effects, that kind of thing. It doesn't really deserve them so not disappointed it didn't.

Gone Girl is just too mainstream and too straightforward a crowd pleaser to get any real Oscars traction for best pic or director. Thrillers never do well anyway. See also Nightcrawler (although imo that didn't really deserve anything, except maybe a nod for Jake).

I'm most disappointed about Ralph Fiennes missing out for Grand Budapest, and sad but not surprised for Jen with Cake.
