BuzzJack Music Forum _ Ariana Grande _ Forum Party: positions

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 11:42 AM

The listening party concept returns to the Ariana AF TONIGHT after hugely successful ones earlier in the year!

We want to celebrate the release week of Ariana's 6th studio album 'positions' by listening to it together in unison as a forum. It's simple, at 8:30pm UK time tonight hit 'play' on your preferred platform and comment along in this thread. I'll be providing a YouTube embed of each song as it begins playing too - so if you are only able to join part-way through then you can catch up with us.

http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=235183 is a link to the 'thank u, next' party back in June for a feel of how they work.

Here are some handy links for tonight:

My 3 month trial of Spotify premium ran out today so I've just upgraded to having it full-time in time for this cheeseblock.png

Does tonight work okay for people? Really excited for this cheer.gif

Looking forward to this heart.gif

A little over an hour to go! I’m warming up by... listening to ‘positions’ in the bath first laugh.gif #streampositions

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:21 PM

10 minute warning!

(well more like 9 minute warning but yeah)

#01. shut up

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:31 PM

I think Shut Up is my least favourite track on the album but it's still certainly a nice way to start.

The harmonising in the 'so dumb' bit sounds so good wub.gif

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 08:31 PM

PLAYING cheer.gif

The album is growing on me with each listen, so I am excited for this.

'shut up' hmm a cute introduction, but definitely low down on a full album ranking for me heehee.gif the anthem for Trump over the next few days though ~

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:32 PM

I actually like Shut Up laugh.gif

It's by no means the best on the album but for me it's not the worst either!

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:32 PM

Yeah 'shut up' is a nice enough opener - I like that it's reflective of the past and takes us to her current state of mind and the elongated notes and strings are lush. But not in my top 10 of the album really.

#02. 34+35

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 08:33 PM

'34+35' is DIRTY and ALL THE MORE FAB because of it *.* We stan and need that music video now x

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 08:34 PM

shut up is a strong opener, I really like it! heart.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:34 PM

I want to love this more with it being the 2nd single but it's still in my bottom 3. Not bad per sé but not wowing me. Hopefully a video will make it click more!

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:34 PM

34+35 really is the right choice for single 2. Sounds like a hit and the adlibs at the end are great.

I can't wait to see what a video for this looks like.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:36 PM

This one's alright but again nothing stand out for me. Other tracks have grown on me but this one wasn't really the same.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:36 PM

#03. motive (feat. Doja Cat)

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:37 PM

Motive was one that didn't really hit me on my first few listens but grows on me loads every time I hear it. I think it will end up being on of my faves.

I'm a bit disappointed with Doja's verse though. She usually kills it with the features but she's just decent here.

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 08:37 PM

34+35 is a bop, a good single choice I think!

motive is another fave, probably my top pick for single 3.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:37 PM

Motive has really grown on me since first listen! It's still probably towards the bottom of my ranking (and I don't think Doja adds much to it tbh unsure.gif) but it's a bop. music.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:37 PM

Yay, now this is more like it! wub.gif hopefully 'motive' will become a post-album single, especially as it's looking likely to have a top 20 peak in the bag already.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:39 PM

#04. just like magic

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 08:39 PM

Not a huge fan of Doja Cat usually but 'motive' is a bop!

'just like magic' a bit of filler for me~

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:40 PM

I love just like magic! Really underrated imo and probably one of my favourites on the album. wub.gif

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:40 PM

Just Like Magic sounds beautiful but it gets a bit lost in the rest of the album for me.

The 'love letters to heaven' line really hits though.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:40 PM

'just like magic' makes me smile so much - love how positive and pretty the lyrics are wub.gif

"Manifest it" you say, Ariana? *manifests physical copies of 'positions' shipping tomorrow* magic.gif

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 08:41 PM

just like magic is a grower from first listen!

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:41 PM

#05. off the table (feat. The Weeknd)

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 08:42 PM

'off the table' is STUNNING - these two are always magic together wub.gif wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:43 PM

This was initially a huge disappointment for me, as 'Love Me Harder' was such a high bar, but I'd be lying if I said the final chorus didn't slay me in the bath earlier laugh.gif so yes, a bit of a grower as I was hoping for ~

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:43 PM

Off The Table is really underrated I think.

One of the most 'classic' R&B tracks on the album and its just so smooth and then when she really goes for it at the end it feels so earned. The little vocal ticks throughout the song sound so heavenly.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:44 PM

"Off the Table" was definitely a grower. I was also quite underwhelmed on first listen but I think it was because it wasn't what I was expecting at all.

Not one of my favourites but it's still beautiful. wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:45 PM

#06. six thirty

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:46 PM

Six Thirty has been a bit of a grower for me but I do still wish it had a proper chorus. As it is it feels like a bit more of an interlude than a full song.

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 08:46 PM

off the table is nice, not a major fave though sad.gif

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:47 PM

I like six thirty but again one of the weaker ones on the album for me.

Feel like I'm saying that a lot but I much prefer the second half laugh.gif

Posted by: Jay* 4th November 2020, 08:47 PM

Experiencing my first ever listen of the album with the Forum Party! ohmy.gif Better late than never heehee.gif

Apart from not feeling 'shut up', I'm enjoying the vibe of the album so far wub.gif Motive my favourite out of the first 6 songs.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:47 PM

The meaning of 'six thirty' is quite cool (6:30 is when both of the hands on a clock face downwards and the chorus is "are you down?") but the most filler song for me sonically

We get to some great songs after this *.*

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 08:48 PM

I agree that six thirty is quite filler-y, not bad at all but not one to return to really.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:48 PM

#07. safety net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:50 PM

Safety Net was a really nice surprise. Ty wasn't really an inspiring choice of feature but the song is probably the best of the 3. He really has a habit of popping up on songs that I love for reasons over than him. At least he embraced it with the title of his latest album laugh.gif

The chorus is an absolute killer. I'm constantly getting it stuck in my head.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:50 PM

Absolutely love safety net! Another one of my favourites. wub.gif

I was actually expecting this to be my least favourite collab on the album but it's definitely my favourite.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:50 PM

I'm such a 'safety net' stan already it's unreal cheeseblock.png my favourite on the album by quite some distance - flawlessly executed in every way wub.gif

I didn't really consider this as a single but I'm coming around to the idea after a few people mentioning it as a wish. I just couldn't stand to see it not taking off! laugh.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:52 PM

#08. my hair

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 08:52 PM

Really like safety net!! Out of the 3 collabs it ranks in the middle for me.

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 08:52 PM

'six thirty' another filler track for me oop~

'safety net' is *.*

'my hair' is ok and warming on me more but not a standout just yet x

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:52 PM

The vocals on My Hair are amongst her best (I mean a whole verse of whistle notes!!!) but as a song its one of the tracks that does the least for me.

I feel like everyone else loves it though

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:53 PM

'my hair' has crept up on me sooo much wub.gif the funky, jazzy vibes of it are just irresistible. Of course the whistle sentences are out of this world too!

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:54 PM

#09. nasty

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:56 PM

I was hyped for 'nasty' based on the snippet and it did not disappoint! Her voice effortlessly glides over this breezy R&B stuff wub.gif

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 08:57 PM

my hair and nasty are two solid tracks! wub.gif love the vibe of my hair and nasty has been stuck in my head a lot.

The whistle notes cheeseblock.png

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:57 PM

Nasty was a song I was so excited to hear after the teasers for it but I'd probably rank it somewhere in the middle. It's a lot more subdued than I was expecting but I like the vibe.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 08:58 PM

#10. west side

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 08:59 PM

West Side would be one of my faves if it wasn't so short. The song feels so effortless and so easy to get lost in. wub.gif

Posted by: Jay* 4th November 2020, 08:59 PM

Safety Net is my favourite so far cheeseblock.png

Really enjoying the vibe of the album wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:00 PM

'west side' is probably the most underrated song on the album for me! It's not top tier but I see it mentioned as a skip and it's far from that in my eyes. Gives me Tinashe vibes a little melodically. Its biggest flaw is its length - definitely the song that screams out for a longer duration the most I think.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 09:00 PM

I still like west side but it's probably the weakest on the album for me.

It's quite short and doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere. unsure.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:00 PM

#11. love language

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 09:00 PM

'nasty' and 'west side' <3 definitely hear Tinashe vibes in the latter.

'love language' gah let's bop again!

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 09:02 PM

Love Language is a MASSIVE highlight. One of the most upbeat and exciting songs on the album which really helps it stand out. Major bop and the outro is brill.

Why is it doing so poorly on Spotify compared to the rest of the album? sad.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:02 PM

'love language' is such a BOP wub.gif quite a cool shift in production - strings still there of course but a little bit more of an electronic feel.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 09:02 PM

'Love Language' is another one of my favourites. wub.gif

Posted by: Sour Candy 4th November 2020, 09:03 PM

Ooh just realized this is happening... LL is one of my faves. The last 1/3 of the album is very strong.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:03 PM

#12. positions

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 09:04 PM

Positions is still my favourite on the album. I'm so glad it was chosen as the lead and is going to be a multi-week #1. cheer.gif

The video really helped in selling the song to me. I wish the MV was a bit more reflective of the way the actually election is going over there at the moment though tbh.

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:04 PM

Omg I always forget that the outro of 'love language' is still to come each time laugh.gif

'positions' is an absolute joy - both the song and video <3 definitely the correct choice of lead single!

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 09:05 PM

title track cheeseblock.png wub.gif party.gif

Posted by: Sour Candy 4th November 2020, 09:06 PM

Positions is GORGEOUS! One of her best singles wub.gif

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 09:06 PM

positions was definitely the right choice for first single. A bit different to the rest of the album and very catchy. Another one of my favourites! wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:06 PM

#13. obvious

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:07 PM

'obvious' is bottom 2 of the album for me but even these more filler-type songs have a nice vibe to them laugh.gif

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 09:07 PM

I really liked Obvious on my first few listens but its already dropping down my rankings. A little bit filler-y to me.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 09:08 PM

Obvious was one of the most instant for me and I still really like it. wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:08 PM

#14. pov

Posted by: HausofHitchcock 4th November 2020, 09:09 PM

'pov' EASILY the best album track for me now, pure love wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:09 PM

'pov' is such a beautiful closing song heart.gif that final chorus is especially powerful.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 09:10 PM

pov is by far my favourite song on this album. It's stunning and her vocals on the last chorus are insane. wub.gif wub.gif

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 09:10 PM

I think everyone else seems to love POV more than me.

It feels different to anything she's recorded before and feels like a perfect way to close the album but it isn't hitting me in the same way it is with the majority.

Posted by: Sour Candy 4th November 2020, 09:11 PM

LOOOOOVE POV heart.gif maybe top 3 on the album

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:12 PM

That went so quickly ohmy.gif but was really good fun - thanks to everyone for joining in wub.gif always a pleasure to host anything in here!

Posted by: LewisGT 4th November 2020, 09:13 PM

Still everchanging but this is how I think I'd rank at the moment

7. West Side

Great fun as always.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan 4th November 2020, 09:19 PM

This album just keeps on growing on me! I think this is my ranking for now.

1. pov
2. just like magic
3. safety net
4. positions
5. love language
6. off the table
7. obvious
8. my hair
9. nasty
10. shut up
11. 34+35
12. motive
13. six thirty
14. west side

Thanks for hosting Jade!

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 09:22 PM

No problem guys *.*

Mine is now:

01. safety net
02. love language
03. my hair
04. positions
05. pov

06. just like magic
07. motive
08. nasty
09. off the table
10. west side

11. shut up
12. 34+35
13. obvious
14. six thirty

So a few shifts up and down since last time - 'just like magic' and 'off the table' rising a little!

Looking forward to doing a rate for this at some point when the dust has settled more - feels like quite a few songs could be in the running for the crown.
