1. Loreen – Euphoria (2012)

Pre-Euphoria I was a bit of a Loreen doubter, I liked both My Heart Is Refusing Me and Sober, but both had felt slightly unsubstantial in some way. I sensed that Loreen had more to give, she seemed like such a unique performer. Fast forward to Melodifestivalen 2012 and the fact that she'd decided to return already suggested that she knew she'd found something good, a reason worth coming back for. The first time I heard the song in full was her Melodifestivalen semi-final performance. I was absolutely blown away by the song and her unusual performance and the studio version confirmed to me that this song was incredibly special. It beat early hot favourite Danny Saucedo to win Melodifestivalen 2012 and two months later swept to a highly convincing Eurovision victory for Sweden.

The day after the contest Euphoria raced to #1 on iTunes across the continent, including in the Eurovision-phobic UK, where it settled for a #3 debut and peak officially. It was a mammoth hit across Europe and has put Loreen's name well and truly on the map. I'll never tire of hearing that pounding siren intro leading into the melancholy brooding beat of the verses and the literal euphoria of the chorus. The immense dance production laden with sweeping strings and the winding down to the minimalistic middle eight before crashing back into the incredible chorus and the thundering finish. Everything about the song is perfection and there was never going to be any other winner here. Seven years on the song is still my ringtone - pure magic and my second favourite song of all-time (behind the apparently unshiftable Set You Free by N-Trance).

I'll start with what I know and like from your EOY

1. Kate Miller-Heidke - Zero Gravity a great eurovision pick, it didn't translate too well into the studio version for me but was such a great performance on the night
3. John Lundvik - Too Late For Love
4. Katy Perry - Never Really Over one of her best for me as well
5. Swim Deep - To Feel Good
7. Spinifex Gum & Marliya Choir - Sisters
9. DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ - All The Beautiful Things U Do
10. Mabel - Don't Call Me Up
14. IDER - Swim
17. Becky Hill & Weiss (UK) - I Could Get Used To This
21. Mahmood - Soldi
22. Tones and I - Dance Monkey absolutely love that this is such a mega smash
24. Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now
26. Avicii feat Agnes and Vargas & Lagola - Tough Love ooh someone else who prefers this to SOS! one of my absolute faves of this year, alongside Avicii's other 2 tracks here – great to see all 3 chart as well as the album in your top 5
29. Wim Mertens - Close Cover
32. Freya Ridings - Castles
34. Wolfgang Wee - In My Arms
42. Ed Sheeran feat Chance the Rapper & PnB Rock - Cross Me
50. Keiino - Spirit in the Sky this was for me the best performance of Eurovision this year – although my fave song (in studio form) was Darude 'Look Away' because of course it was
53. Ellie Goulding - River beautiful cover, won't be going nearly as high in my 2020 EOY (as my year starts in December) but will continue to rack up the plays every year
59. Avicii & Aloe Blacc - SOS
66. Hatari - Hatriπ mun sigra
69. Jax Jones feat Ella Henderson - This Is Real this is fast becoming one of my Jax faves
70. Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love Kygo had such a good 2019!
73. DJ Spoony feat Sugababes - Flowers
80. Sigala & Becky Hill - Wish You Well and this was one of my Sigala faves
84. Crush - Jellyhead (Motiv 8 Mix)
86. Avicii - Heaven
90. Sigrid - Don’t Feel Like Crying
94. Billie Eilish - Bad Guy
96. Vampire Weekend - Harmony Hall
97. MEDUZA & Goodboys - Piece Of Your Heart absolutely love this as well as Lose Control

Thanks Dan, agreed on Dance Monkey, shame it has so many haters but I get that her voice is marmite.

Tough Love is so good! I feel like it slipped completely under the radar, sounds like a great Eurovision entry and I was so pleased to hear Agnes back.

Agree about River, it's gorgeous, shame it got to No.1 in such murky circumstances, who knows if it would have even been a top 20 hit without Alexa!

Agree about Jax Jones too, great track.

QUOTE(Shepeteherd @ Dec 30 2019, 08:07 PM) *
I think I'm beginning to appreciate Let Her Go more and more now, his voice is so unique and a beautiful song.
In My Mind is a really strong dance song, can't believe it was over a year since it hit the mainstream. Peanut Butter Jelly is fab as well although not one of their best for me.
Giving We Should Go Home Together a listen now, very pop-py but I could se it getting stuck in my head if I heard it enough!
Mary Keane Introduction is one of my favourite BJSC songs from you, such a well put together song and the vocals really add another layer to it.
And Bring on the Night was a brilliant one from The Corrs as well, a great return.

Enjoying the list so far!

Thanks Pete, I've always really loved Let Her Go, such a beautiul track.

Retrospectively In My Mind seems like a bit of an unexpected top five hit, nothing that sounds like it really smashed before it or since.

Le Kid are really good, I miss them a lot! We Should Go Home Together was my favourite though.

Glad you liked Mary Keanes Introduction, it was a bit of a surprise and shame to me that it DNQ'd as I felt it stood out as something unique in a positive way.

No shock to see your #1 there Rich, but it's such a richly deserving winner! Not just an amazing song but of course a huge moment with the Eurovision win and UK chart success too.

Pleased Wings is the top Delta song too, a pleasant surprise when I first heard it, one of her absolute best and a true return to form after a couple of wobbly moments between the COTU era ending and Wings' release..!

Fantastic EOD list wub.gif

Thanks for commenting AH, yes Le Kid are a bit of a forgotten gem all round, I really miss them. And I've loved rediscovering Flares again recently, such a euphoric track.

Thanks Joseph! Yes agreed completely on Loreen, it was such a moment in so many ways.

Agree about Delta! Heart Hypnotic did top my weekly chart, but...it wasn't exactly vintage Delta, I'm amazed she tried to jump on the Avicii bandwagon looking back. Wings was a real stormer though.

Favourites from the top half of your list:

1. Loreen – Euphoria (2012) Great choice of #1! A really good Eurovision winner
2. Sheppard – A Grade Playa (2014) [b]Giving this a listen now, Sheppard's more electronic sound I see, a nice track although I prefer Keep Me Crazy and Edge of the Night!

4. Maroon 5 feat Christina Aguilera – Moves Like Jagger (2011)
5. Lena Meyer-Landrut – Satellite (2010) Another great Eurovision winner, a unique style that I loved when it was on
7. Take That – The Flood (2010)
8. Mεns Zelmerlφw – Heroes (2015) Another great Eurovision winner kink.gif Think I've run out of things to say about good Eurovision winners but I love this one also
13. Freya Ridings – Lost Without You (2018)
14. Clean Bandit feat Sean Paul & Anne-Marie – Rockabye (2011)
15. Poli Genova – If Love Was A Crime (2016) This one sticks in my head, but mostly for the amazing line 'if love was a crime, then we would be criminals....
16. Sanna Nielsen – Undo (2014)
21. Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen – Good Time (2012)
27. Delta Goodrem feat Gizzle – Enough (2016) One of my favourite Delta songs as of late, so catchy!
29. David Guetta feat Sia – Titanium (2011)
30. Lorde – Royals (2013)
31. Cascada – Glorious (2013)
32. Sheppard – Geronimo (2014)
33. Stromae – Alors On Danse (2010) Didn't discover this until a couple of years ago but I love it! A great dance tune and it's in French which is even better
34. Gotye feat Kimbra – Somebody That I Used To Know (2011)
37. Steps – Scared Of The Dark (2017)
38. Clean Bandit feat Jess Glynne – Rather Be (2014)
43. Avicii & Nicky Romero – I Could Be The One (2013)
44. Avicii – Wake Me Up (2013)
46. Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa – One Kiss (2018)

Great list!

Thanks Pete! Haha yes agree with you on those Eurovision winners, there have been some strong winners in the 2010s. A Grade Playa is a weird one, one of those songs that only I seem to adore so much, but it resonates with me a lot for some reason. I really adore Sheppard, I like the tracks you mentioned too. Ha, yes that was a great lyric in If Love Was A Crime, also check out the Norway 2008 entry, 'love can be hard some times, it can catch you off guard like bad crimes' laugh.gif

Glad to hear you belatedly discovered Alors On Danse, I wish that had been a bigger hit in the UK, but I guess the fact it was a top 40 hit at all should be applauded.

Thanks Jade, glad you liked DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ so much, shame it wasn't my best performing entry of the year really so it could be in TBO! I think it deserved a top 10 finish in the final but I was happy with its top 15 placing. Yes Lost Without You really was so beautiful, especially that string version <3

The Flood is such an epic track, and Progress was so good too. I can imagine, very jealous as I'd loved to have seen that tour but couldn't get tickets at the time.

Thanks a lot for your comments Sergej, glad you came to like Zero Gravity in the end! Vincent is such a wonderful track, I gather it's on the radio non-stop in Germany this last year so you've probably heard it a lot! I love that Sarah Connor is still such a successful artist there after all these years. Soldi was so good, really grew on me a lot from the first listen and I was hooked eventually.

I agree with you about Loreen! Such a great winner <3 And Lena was too, a stunning victory for Germany, I love how you've basically come top 10 or last during the 2010s (though Cascada deserved so much more), better than the UK which alternates between last and a few places away from last! I quite like that Germany still listen to a lot of schlager, I love Helene Fischer's music, but Atemlos is definitely her best track to date. I liked Autobahn too a lot though.

that's a great chart topper, it also topped my personal chart and should make my EOD list which is unprecedented for a eurovision song. also great to see Ramelia, Flares and Platinum Chains come out as some of your faves of your BJSC entries (alongside LWY but that was always going to make this list).

my top faves from your 2010s list (Absolute faves bolded):

1. Loreen – Euphoria (2012)
4. Maroon 5 feat Christina Aguilera – Moves Like Jagger (2011)
13. Freya Ridings – Lost Without You (2018)

17. Jennifer Lopez feat Pitbull – On The Floor (2011)
20. Rihanna feat Drake – What's My Name (2010)
22. Rihanna feat Calvin Harris – We Found Love (2011)
29. David Guetta feat Sia – Titanium (2011)
30. Lorde – Royals (2013)
33. Stromae – Alors On Danse (2010)
34. Gotye feat Kimbra – Somebody That I Used To Know (2011)

84. Rita Ora – Anywhere (2017)
90. Katy Perry – Never Really Over (2019)
98. Lady Gaga – Applause (2013)

Thanks Dan, glad to hear Euphoria should be making your list, by any standards it's an amazing song so I'm glad it was a real life hit too. Yes, obviously Platinum Chains I cheekily heard first in your chart anyway! Ramelia and Flares I still love a lot, the former is one of my proudest entries, I never thought I'd win again (especially not after losing on a tiebreak in 2012, which alas happened again to Freya, so close yet so far!!)

Thanks Jack, those two were really the cream of the chart crop last year. Never Really Over should have been No.1 for weeks.

Hi Rich, I think I'm later than you in replying to EOY charts tongue.gif

My faves from 2019 (will do a seperate post for decade one)

4. Katy Perry - Never Really Over
5. Swim Deep - To Feel Good
7. Spinifex Gum & Marliya Choir - Sisters
10. Mabel - Don't Call Me Up
11. Spacetrain - Salsa Me
14. IDER - Swim
15. Lily Moore - Over You
17. Becky Hill & Weiss (UK) - I Could Get Used To This
24. Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now
26. Avicii feat Agnes and Vargas & Lagola - Tough Love
28. Sheppard - Kiss My Fat Ass that title laugh.gif
32. Freya Ridings - Castles was nice to see her get another hit!
33. Westlife - Hello My Love I haven't even heard this lol, only can bear about 3 of their songs.
44. Freya Ridings - Love Is Fire
50. Keiino - Spirit in the Sky Very catchy Eurovision song and of course popping up in the recent BJSC contest with another strong track!
53. Ellie Goulding - River Has Alexa to thank for that post christmas number 1 lol, this is a beautiful rendition though but not as good as the original which I did listen to after
58. Ed Sheeran feat Camila Cabello & Cardi B - South of the Border
63. Ava Max - So Am I About to grab another hit potentially. Who Knew!
67. Way Out West - Mindcircus (Gabriel & Dresden Remix) This grew on me during the contest but hadn't fully clicked unfortunetly sad.gif
69. Jax Jones feat Ella Henderson - This Is Real
70. Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love
72. Taylor Swift - Lover One of the best from the album!
74. Luca Hδnni - She Got Me
80. Sigala & Becky Hill - Wish You Well
85. Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Seρorita
88. Swimming Girls - 1 2 Many
89. Valerie Broussard - Actually (Tom Ferry Remix) Familiar name as she was somewhere I looked at as a BJSC potential in 2016, will check out soon!
90. Sigrid - Don’t Feel Like Crying
93. Maroon 5 - Memories Shame their quality has dipped over the year chasing trends etc. Not a fan of this one sadly but did like Girls Like You
94. Billie Eilish - Bad Guy TUNE, her best by far!

Brill stuff, just a shame I know much less hits from 2019 as a whole due to over saturation of grime tracks.
Also loving those BJSC entries of yours that at the top end!

and for your End of Decade...

1. Loreen – Euphoria (2012) I mean obviously this was gonna be your number 1 lol!
2. Sheppard – A Grade Playa (2014) This was pretty good, not surprised to see it so high for you!
3. Wiktoria – As I Lay Me Down (2017)
4. Maroon 5 feat Christina Aguilera – Moves Like Jagger (2011) The song that turned it around for both artists, great funky song if a little overrated for me!
6. Avicii & B & B And Choir – We Write The Story (2013)
7. Take That – The Flood (2010) this is absolutely one of their best ever songs for me!
8. Mεns Zelmerlφw – Heroes (2015) decent winner!
9. Kylie Minogue – All The Lovers (2010) brilliant comeback song!
10. Walk The Moon – Shut Up And Dance (2014) oh yeah the song that annoyed the hell out of me and the video lol, can't deny it's a great feel good radio tune though!
11. Delta Goodrem – Wings (2015)
13. Freya Ridings – Lost Without You (2018) If only a few more points..
14. Clean Bandit feat Sean Paul & Anne-Marie – Rockabye (2011)

19. Ed Sheeran – The A Team (2011)
20. Rihanna feat Drake – What's My Name (2010)
21. Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen – Good Time (2012) perhaps a forgotten hit in the general public but certainly not on buzzjack, really liked this..
22. Rihanna feat Calvin Harris – We Found Love (2011)
23. The Veronicas – You Ruin Me (2014) Ahh beautiful and coming from someone who didn't even have a high opinion on them before. The album was great too!
29. David Guetta feat Sia – Titanium (2011) amazing how Sia is no longer underrated chart wise thanks to this (and Chandelier).
30. Lorde – Royals (2013)
31. Cascada – Glorious (2013)
32. Sheppard – Geronimo (2014) I can't believe this got pushed numerous times and still only got to #35 in the end lol at least it made top 40 nonetheless & Radio 2 support.
34. Gotye feat Kimbra – Somebody That I Used To Know (2011) Still a really unique and clever song, was wondering where either of them went a few months ago actually!
35. Roll Deep – Green Light (2010) enjoying this a lot more nowadays tbh, never really cared about Roll Deep then!
37. Steps – Scared Of The Dark (2017)

39. Take That – These Days (2014) did like this then went off it eek

49. Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – Shallow (2018)
52. The Corrs – Bring On The Night (2015)
53. Daithi – Mary Keanes Introduction (2016) OLD GRANNY, YES!
54. Molly – Children Of The Universe (2014) this deserved WAY better than it did, should have been a top 10 at least (winner or top 3 ideally)
57. Blue – I Can (2011) TUNE, was so frustrating to see this be top 5 most of the night then slip out of the top 10 sad.gif
58. The Common Linnets – Calm After The Storm (2014) love this one too!
63. Taylor Swift – We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (2012) Pop banger!

71. RAM & Susana – RAMelia (Tribute To Amelia) (2014)
72. Eric Saade – Popular (2011)

75. George Ezra – Shotgun (2018)
78. Ed Sheeran – You Need Me, I Don't Need You (2011)

90. Katy Perry – Never Really Over (2019)
91. Boyzone – Gave It All Away (2010) Aw sad.gif
92. KOLAJ – The Touch (2016)

96. Swim Deep – To Feel Good (2019)
97. Pegboard Nerds – Emoji (2015)
