Without a doubt Settle was one of the best dance debuts of the decade and it makes me incredibly nostalgic to listen back to any of the hits from it - the album was the debut from the then 18 and 21 year-old Surrey brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence and it came in what was a very exciting period for UK dance music. Despite not even being born until the 1990s had kicked off, the duo brought the house music from that decade and updated it, using addictive beats and basslines in order to punctuate pop tracks that made them ready for the dance floor as they were the radio. Add to that a slew of up-and-coming UK vocalists such as Sam Smith (on “Latch” - still his most listenable moment) and the gorgeous vocals of London Grammer's Hannah Reid on “Help Me Lose My Mind” and it made a really rewarding listen and gave them 2 #1s in 2013. Sadly I wasn't as won over by their follow-up which IMO failed to recapture the magic of their debut - however there have been the odd gems such as 2015s “Holding On” and 2018s “Ultimatum” so I do still have faith in album no. 3.

Now a band who were always destined to become one of my firm favourites of the decade. Since the likes of Lemon Jelly and the Avalanches in the 2000s I have always had a soft spot for quirky songs that have been carefully crafted around old vocal samples. So, with the name 'Public Service Broadcasting' - of which they titled their first album as a nod towards Sir John Reith's vision of the BBC's purpose in 1927: inform, educate, entertain - the name perfectly encapsulated their sound, and made me take notice. I remember hearing “Spitfire” from the War Room EP and instantly being hooked. First hit “Everest” is a beautiful song that epitomises the bands style of capturing old public information films and historical nostalgia and sampling it for a modern audience, I particularly love the line ‘two very small men, cutting steps in the roof of the world’. The group continued to have hits throughout the decade from follow-ups: 2015s' The Race For Space and 2017s' Every Valley including a very impressive 10 consecutive Top 10 hits from debut.

I like PSB too. The way they incorporate 20th century vocal snippets into their work is interesting and unique

Manchester's Everything Everything kick of the Top 10 at #10 - and despite creating some of the most catchy, infectious hooks of the 2010s and combining them with brilliantly lush melodies, they have only cracked the UK Top 40 on one occasion at #37 for 2012s “Cough Cough”. They burst onto the scene in the summer of 2010 with Man Alive and some great singles such as “Schoolin’” where I first heard the fast-paced falsetto vocals of Jon Higgs, but didn't reach the Top 10 until the aforementioned “Cough Cough” in 2012. They then went on to have their most successful era in 2015 with the brilliant Get to Heaven which spawned their only #1 single of the decade, 2015s “Regret” and 3 other Top 10 singles which optimised their style of fun, memorable and intelligent indie/electronic and pop music.

Love Everything Everything, they really do have some brilliant songs out and certainly one of the best bands lyrically as well. Disclosure have some brilliant music also, White Noise and Confess To Me were both incredible tracks!
