BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Top 100 Unluckiest Records in Pop 2010-2015

Posted by: Gezza 30th August 2016, 05:54 PM

Well Hello to you, it's been a while but I've been busy working on some things for y'all......

Anyway here's a new rundown for you!

Top 100

records of the 2010's. It's an attempt to put some science (sales) into the concept of "Unlucky" records.

So onto the sales bit to see how the rundown has been arrived at:

Firstly each year is taken separately and the 52/53 weekly totals of the No 1 record are put in descending order according to sales. Next we look at all the weekly sales of the tracks that never made No 1 and see in how many weeks of that particular year it COULD have been No 1 based on its best weekly sale.

So if the lowest weekly sales tallies for the No 1 record for the year 2010 were 41k, 43k, 44k, and 45k, and a song at some point in the year peaked at No 4 but sold 46k then it COULD have been No 1 in 4 weeks of that year (the weeks indicated).

Hope that all makes sense.

Now to make it even more interesting (and perhaps even more unlucky) we'll only look at the singles that never even peaked at No 2, yes just non top 2 singles that sold enough to make the weekly charts No 1 if only they'd been released in a different week.

Once this is done I've ordered the songs firstly by the number of weeks in that year that the song could have topped the charts of that year, and then by the amount it sold!

And finally I've ignored the final chart weeks of the year (Xmas week and the week after) as the "gift card" effect effectively distorts sales and isn't a normal chart week.

Hopefully whatever I've not explained will become clear as we go along.

So let's see just who can claim to be the unluckiest record of the decade so far!

AS ALWAYS CAN WE PLEASE AVOID SPOILERS- IT JUST RUINS THE THREAD

but you're participation is encouraged naturally on the tracks that come up- were they unlucky and should they have been No 1?

I understand the work put into these sort if topics so I shall be contributing when I can, cant wait

Posted by: danG 30th August 2016, 06:11 PM

I hope Duck Sauce make an appearance here, I remember they sold a lot but only made number three.

Can't think of any others right now but it sounds liek a great thread! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra 30th August 2016, 06:17 PM

Can't wait. Didn't know this was for the 2010's only at first.

Posted by: mdh 30th August 2016, 06:22 PM

Exciting - I'll follow this, what with it being in my era.

Posted by: Gezza 30th August 2016, 06:33 PM

There are actually 118 records that sold enough to top the charts for at least 1 week in their respective year so here's the one that didn't make the top 100 because of their sales......

THE WEEKND- Can't Feel My Face
JAMES BLUNT- Bonfire Heart
DAVID GUETTA FT EMELI SANDE- What I Did For Love
BLONDE- All Cried Out
NICOLE SCHERZINGER- Boomerang
DEORRO & CHRIS BROWN- Five More Hours
DEMI LOVATO- Heart Attack
GALANTIS- Runaway (U & I)
JESS GLYNNE- Take Me Home
SIGMA FT ELLA HENDERSON- Glitterball
DR KUCHO! & GREGOR SALTER FT ANE BRUN- Can't Stop Playing (Makes Me High)
TAYLOR SWIFT FT KENDRICK LAMAR- Bad Blood
SKRILLEX & DIPLO PRESENT JACK U FT JUSTIN BIEBER- Where Are U Now?
WALK THE MOON- Shut Up & Dance
COVER DRIVE- Sparks
FLO RIDA FT SIA- Wild Ones
THE WANTED- I Found You
STOOSHE- Black Heart

DR KUCHO! & GREGOR SALTER FT ANE BRUN- Can't Stop Playing (Makes Me High)

No way would this have been a number one laugh.gif I miss 2015, so much amazing music.

Very much looking forward to this!

Notably high number of 2015 songs there. Especially liked the ones from Derrero & Chris Brown, Blonde, Dr. Kucho and The Weeknd... agree that 2015 was quite good for chart music really and certainly better than this year on the whole.

Remember 'Wild Ones' being everywhere too.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 31st August 2016, 12:14 AM

Really hyped for this!

Black Heart wub.gif wub.gif One of my favourite songs of all time! heart.gif

Posted by: Taylor Jago 31st August 2016, 08:08 AM

I heavily doubt Sparks wouldn't have been a complete non-number one had it been released on the correct week. In which it would have beaten Good Feeling by only 200 copies.

Also Glitterball, as much as I would like to think it could have easily been a number one, only could have been number one had it been released on What Do You Mean?'s final week, at which point held-back releases were well on the way out.

Bonfire Heart also only would have beat Somewhere Only We Know on its second week at number one, and by 18 copies.

99. T.H.E (THE HARDEST EVER)- Will.i.am Featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger (53,977) #3

No 1 in 1 week in 2012

Premiered on the MTV awards in 2011 it gave Mick Jagger his first solo credit on a top 10 hit in 27 years, it was also one of the first instances of a held back release being subject to a cover charting whilst we waited for the original to be released, in this case King Of Pop’s version made No 40.

Posted by: Gezza 31st August 2016, 04:00 PM

98. DIBBY DIBBY SOUND- DJ Fresh Vs Jay Fay Featuring Ms Dynamite (60,537) #3

No 1 in 1 week in 2014

You’ll be hearing a few DJ Fresh tracks here, first up and starting this thread is his 2014 track which would have sneaked a week at the top if he had released in December instead of February. A marked return to the charts for Ms Dynamite whose career had been resurrected by Katy B three years earlier.

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 31st August 2016, 04:02 PM

To be honest up until recently I thought Dibby Dibby sound had reached #1 over here laugh.gif

Posted by: SevenSees 31st August 2016, 04:06 PM

DIBBY DIBBY DIBBY DIBBY DIBBY SOUND *.*

T.H.E is obviously godawful though (the only redeeming feature being the slightly hilarious Mick Jagger verse)

Posted by: mdh 31st August 2016, 04:16 PM

Again, Dibby Dibby Sound DOES NOT sound like a number one - however I would have thought T.H.E was a number one. Two good songs to start off with.

Posted by: Bjork 31st August 2016, 04:24 PM

really weird from Will.i.am to pair JLo and Jagger smile.gif

Posted by: danG 31st August 2016, 04:53 PM

Neither of those should have been #1s, and those sales don't look great either. Guess it'll be a while before we do come to the unlucky records.

'Dibby Dibby Sound' was #3 behind two songs you may have heard a lot of, Pharrell "Chart Saviour" Williams 'Happy' at #2 and Clean "Chart Saviours" Bandit 'Rather Be' at #1.

'T.H.E.' was similarly behind two massive songs, David Guetta 'Titanium' at #2 and Gotye 'Somebody That I Used To Know' at #1.

Posted by: Dannyboy 31st August 2016, 05:26 PM

That Will.I.am song is horrendous

Posted by: BillyH 31st August 2016, 08:18 PM

I did like 'T.H.E' at the time, but mostly for the novelty Mick Jagger bit at the end - the rest of its a bit of a non-event.

DDS was definitely predicted as a potential #1 at the time, and got unlucky by being behind two of the most irritatingly overrated tracks of all time, would totally prefer it at #1 over Crappy and Rather Bland.

Posted by: Gezza 1st September 2016, 02:09 PM

97. MR SAXO BEAT- Alexandra Stan (47,765) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

Discovered at a karaoke bar in 2009, Stan’s second single “Mr Saxobeat” spent 8 weeks atop of her native Romanian charts before becoming a major continental hit eventually making it big here in the summer of 2011. It remains the longest chart topper of the decade in Romania (apparently) and even narrowly missed the US top 20, though she’s failed to get another top 40 hit here since.

Posted by: Gezza 1st September 2016, 02:12 PM

96. LEVELS- Avicii (48,342) #4

No 1 for 2 weeks in 2011

The song that saw Avicii hit the mainstream (under this pseudonym at any rate) as a solo act, the sample of Etta James’ “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” was certainly popular at the time with Flo Rida using the same sample on his chart topping “Good Feeling” and both hit the top 5 simultaneously. Rida’s version certainly borrowed some “influence" from this given that it was a hit in Sweden over the summer of 2011 but in the end it was Rida who got the bigger hit.

Posted by: Gezza 1st September 2016, 02:15 PM

95. SUIT AND TIE- Justin Timberlake Featuring Jay Z (48,551)

No 1 for 2 weeks in 2013

Forget “Mirrors” this was the single that JT chose to announce his return as full time popstar in 2013. It was just 6k short of making No 1 that January and dethroning Will.i.am and Britney. Timberlake had taken 6 years off to concentrate on being a film star and producer so his “Comeback” was much heralded, all the expected elements are present, guest rapper, Timberland on production, and a naturally glam video directed by David Fincher who had directed him in “Social Network”.

Posted by: danG 1st September 2016, 02:30 PM

ooh interesting to see Avicii here, I would've loved that to have been a #1 but those sales aren't very high so I can't really call it unlucky there.

still annoyed that Flo Rida got the bigger hit out of the sample though.

Posted by: Ne Plus Ultra 1st September 2016, 02:39 PM

Mr. Saxobeat still sounds so fresh. It's a shame Romanian music doesn't have that organic dance sound like it used to.

Posted by: Dannyboy 1st September 2016, 04:32 PM

Generic dance tracks bore me these days but I still love Mr Saxobeat

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 1st September 2016, 05:11 PM

Mr. Saxobeat & Levels are both great music.gif

Posted by: Jade 1st September 2016, 09:28 PM

'Suit And Tie' is the best of the bunch so far! A really strong lead single that I was expecting to be a number 1. At least 'Mirrors' got there shortly after.

'Dibby Dibby Sound' is an abomination puke.gif so I'm very glad that didn't top the chart!

Posted by: ML Hammer95 1st September 2016, 10:04 PM

Suit & Tie and Dibby Dibby Sound. wub.gif Be nice if records that sounded like this could make a reappearance in the Top 40 soon...

Posted by: BillyH 1st September 2016, 10:47 PM

HELL yeah to Mr Saxobeat, even if the UK radio edit is insultingly short - I remember the presence of both this and Inna's Sun Is Up made me think some epic Europop revival was on its way, but instead we got that deep/"big room" (what?!) house bollocks.

Levels really should have done it, I was pissed off when Flo nicked it as I thought he'd completely killed off Avicii's one chance at a major hit (ha!) so was pleased when it charted highly all the same.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 1st September 2016, 11:09 PM

Mr Saxobeat and Levels are both wonderful tracks that I have some great Uni first year memories of <3 The former admittedly hasn't aged well, but it certainly was great at the time and would've been a great number 1 that fit the club pop dance-saturated charts that summer.

Posted by: Gezza 2nd September 2016, 01:35 PM

94. STARRY EYED- Ellie Goulding (49,113) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

Following the no 53 peak of debut single “Under The Sheets” and winning the BBC “Sound Of” in 2010, Goulding found the big time with this single which arrived at No 4 along with bagging herself Critics choice at the BRITS that year. An illustrious entry into the world of pop and one which could easily have hit the top.

Posted by: Gezza 2nd September 2016, 01:37 PM

93. SOLO- Iyaz (49,121) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

For some reason I’d forgotten all about this! A shameless use of Janet Jackson’s “Again” forms the backbone of this release which shifted almost 50k in its first week. Hs first release “Replay” made the top slot you may recall and this didn’t disgrace as a second single but after that we seemed to lose interest in Iyaz.

Posted by: Gezza 2nd September 2016, 01:39 PM

92. EARTHQUAKE- DJ Fresh Vs Diplo Featuring Dominique Young Unique (49,137) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2013

Something of a superstar DJ combo Fresh and Diplo teamed up for this track used in the film “Kick Ass 2”. It was a first release from a third album which is still to appear 3 years later, Dominique Young Unique subsequently went on to feature on Le Youth’s excellent “Dance With Me”.

Posted by: Riser 3rd September 2016, 04:30 AM

Wow, I'm kinda surprised #1 sales were ever below 49K in 2010 or 2013. Can't say any of those three really missed out though, 'Solo' especially must have surprised everyone getting as high as #3! And wow at DJ Fresh appearing twice already, I suppose it might not be his last either.

Loving this thread already by the way, thanks for another great countdown thread!

Posted by: Cody's Glory 3rd September 2016, 06:51 AM

I think everyone forgot about Iyaz lol

Posted by: Taylor Jago 3rd September 2016, 07:02 AM

Dibby Dibby Sound was awful, so glad that missed the top!

Levels is a bit of a shame, so was Starry Eyed.

I didn't like Suit & Tie much, Mirrors was much better.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd September 2016, 12:20 PM

91. ANTENNA- Fuse ODG (49,717) #7

No 1 in 2 weeks in2013

What’s this a lowly No 7 hit a potential chart topper? Yes back in the heady days of the summer of 2013 and with the likes of Daft Punk, Robin Thicke, and Naughty Boy scoring six digit No 1 tallies this clocked in at a more modest 49k but in a couple of weeks of the year this would have handed the rapper a No 1 release. He’s gone closer since (top 3 in fact) but with better timing this could have been a fantastical debut.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd September 2016, 12:23 PM

90. CARRY YOU- Union J (49,784) #6

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2013

And in the same week as Fuse ODG debuted at No 7 these lot piled into the No 6 position. Union J have never recorded a better opening tally even though they came much closer to No 1 with “You Got It All” that December which did make No 1 on sales only but conceded the top spot to Ed Sheeran once those pesky streams were added.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd September 2016, 12:25 PM

89. LEGO HOUSE- Ed Sheeran (49,800) #5

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

Not the last time we’ll meet Sheeran in this thread, “Lego House” became the singer’s third top 10 single helped no doubt by a promo featuring Rupert Grint. It was only 17k off topping the charts despite that No 5 peak.

Posted by: Riser 3rd September 2016, 02:09 PM

It will be interesting to see how many of these climbed to their peak like 'Lego House' did, compared to the majority which were held-back releases. Although I can think of at least one which was held back and also climbed to its peak.

Also just noticed, was this supposed to start at #99 rather than #100??

Posted by: SevenSeize 3rd September 2016, 02:27 PM

DROP LIKE AN EARTHQUAKE *.* The two DJ Fresh collabs here are some of the best things he's done, they did very well to make the Top 5!

That Iyaz song is awful laugh.gif sounded just like all the other boring r&b fluff at the time. I assumed it'd be quite a big hit, but looks like it actually dropped off pretty fast which is nice

I think i kinda disliked Antenna at first but i came around to it soon enough (Dangerous Love is still his best though)

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 3rd September 2016, 02:29 PM

Carry You wub.gif The only good Union J track!

Posted by: Jade 3rd September 2016, 02:36 PM

The best of this bunch are 'Starry Eyed', 'Carry You' and 'Lego House'. The first two were both great top 40 introductions to the artists in question ~ though this is the only Union J song I enjoyed with the follow-ups being dire, whilst Ellie has a lot of great songs under her belt. 'Lego House' is a gorgeous one from Ed Sheeran and would have been a great chart topper for him.

'Replay' was a bit of a jam but 'Solo' was such a forgettable and bland follow-up, so I'm glad that didn't quite make it. 'Earthquake' is HORRENDOUS so I'm even more glad that one didn't top the chart. laugh.gif

Posted by: ML Hammer95 3rd September 2016, 02:43 PM

Antenna is a 2010's classic! wub.gif

When the likes of 1Xtra and Kiss start including 2010's songs in their 'Old School' sections, I'm sure Antenna will be a stable! Much lived, still hear it regularly (along with Azonto) and so joyous.

QUOTE(Riser @ Sep 3 2016, 03:09 PM) *
Also just noticed, was this supposed to start at #99 rather than #100??

No it was meant to but I made an error further up the countdown (something peaked at No 2 and I thought it was No 3) so everything has moved up one place! biggrin.gif

Posted by: vibe 4th September 2016, 02:12 PM

Can't wait to see where Janet is with Together Again !

I begin to wonder if Dannii features ?

Posted by: vibe 4th September 2016, 02:14 PM

Oops just read it's only from 2010

88. I WON’T LET YOU GO- James Morrison (49,994) #5

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

When you’re up against the might of “Moves Like Jagger” and the mighty Dappy perhaps it’s no surprise that you end up at No 5 but this was still a return to form for Morrison. He’d been absent for 2 years when this became his fifth top 10 single though admittedly the second release from the album featured Jessie J and pretty much ended the album campaign. Odd.

Posted by: Gezza 4th September 2016, 03:13 PM

87. ONE (YOUR NAME)- Swedish House Mafia (50,000) #7

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

With vocals and lyrics courtesy of a certain Pharrell the vocal was intended for a different track which SHF altered to fit the melody of “One”. Some have said the video is a dig at Guetta for creating a track called “50 Degrees” which uses the synth line from “One” or at least a very similar one!

Posted by: Gezza 4th September 2016, 03:17 PM

86. I LIKE IT- Enrique Iglesias Featuring Pitbull (50,019) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

I rather shamefully loved this at the time, RedOne at the height of his powers along with rent-a-rapper Pitbull and an 80s sample all in the mix- what’s not to like? His follow up “Heartbeat” was his last great single but I’d rather liked this to have become his second chart topper.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 4th September 2016, 03:57 PM

Love I Like It, still listen to it regularly! wub.gif

Posted by: Jade 4th September 2016, 04:23 PM

'One (Your Name)' is an enormous Swedish House Mafia highlight heart.gif and way better than their actual #1.

Posted by: T Boy 4th September 2016, 05:02 PM

James Morrison has seen virtually no success since dueting with Jessie J, NEED I SAY MORE?

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 5th September 2016, 08:01 AM

Catching up now, 'Antenna' is one of my faves wub.gif

I Like It and One (Your Name) were both good as well music.gif

Posted by: Gezza 5th September 2016, 04:29 PM

85. COOLER THAN ME- Mike Posner (50,025) #5

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

It took him another 6 years to grab a chart topper as an artist, but his first hit back in 2010 almost did the trick for Posner. The original mix featured a rap by Big Sean but he disappeared on the single mix for some reason, anyway 50k for No 5 isn’t too shabby at all.

Posted by: Gezza 5th September 2016, 04:32 PM

84. IF WE EVER MEET AGAIN- Timbaland Featuring Katy Perry (50,028) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

In the same week as Helping Haiti sold a mind blowing 453k (in February!!) this trick was lingering at No 3, maybe people picked up a copy whilst they were on i-Tunes? Anyway Timbaland and Perry’s first new release of the decade did sell enough to make the top in a couple of weeks during the year had they timed it better. It is apparently Timbaland’s attempt to make something like “I Gotta Feeling”- the rap at the end of the track is performed by Timbaland’s brother- though he’s uncredited.

Posted by: Gezza 5th September 2016, 04:35 PM

83. JUST CAN’T GET ENOUGH- Black Eyed Peas (50,166) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

And talking of the BEP here’s their 2011 offering and final (to date) top 10 single, it’s also one of the few that I can bear to hear. The promo was shot in Japan just before the earthquake struck, not long afterwards they all went their separate ways though some may feature on other tracks to come in this list.

Posted by: Gezza 6th September 2016, 04:52 PM

82. BANG BANG BANG- Mark Ronson & Business Intl Featuring Q-Tip & MNDR (50,170) #6

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

Right back to the summer of 2010 now with Ronson’s lead single from his third album “Record Collection”. It’s fair to say that the era wasn’t as successful as the “Version” period but certainly it’s first week sales weren’t bad at all.

Posted by: Gezza 6th September 2016, 04:55 PM

81. STARSTRUKK- 3OH!3 Featuring Katy Perry (50,890) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

In only the second week of the decade this paring racked up the sales as the song actually slid down the charts 3-4. The duo met Perry after supporting her on her tour in 2009 and she guest starred on this track as a favour to the boys, it remains their biggest hit here.

Posted by: Gezza 6th September 2016, 04:57 PM

80. S & M- Rihanna (51,108) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

For those of us that recall at the time the title of this was changed to “Come On” by Radio One who obviously considered “S & M” a little too near the knuckle. The mild controversy caused by the risqué lyrics might have helped as well as a version featuring Britney in duet with Rihanna but either way it was a strong seller.

Posted by: Riser 7th September 2016, 02:30 AM

Wow at both Katy Perry features appearing almost back-to-back. 'Starstrukk' is hardly a classic but I far prefer it to 'If We Ever Meet Again', at least 'Starstrukk' stood out in a weird way while IFWMA sounded too generic to me. 'Cooler Than Me' and 'Bang Bang' were two of my FAVES in 2010 wub.gif Loved 'Just Can't Get Enough' too, that was also rather quirky in the same way as 'Starstrukk'.

Pleased to see that three of the last six were post-album singles!

Posted by: SKOB 7th September 2016, 07:21 AM

Some of these songs are awful, just awful. I don't want to consider them as "unlucky" laugh.gif

Posted by: Gezza 7th September 2016, 03:03 PM

79. SHINE A LIGHT- McFly Featuring Taio Cruz (51,236) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2010

Not many would have anticipated McFly teaming up with Taio Cruz but it produced an unexpected hit back in 2010. It previewed McFly’s fifth album (where has the time gone?) and is actually pretty much what you imagine a merge of the two acts would sound like but it was up against the mighty Rihanna and Take That so no wonder it failed to make the top despite those sales.

Posted by: Gezza 7th September 2016, 03:06 PM

78. RIGHT THERE- Nicole Scherzinger (51,355) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

With a run of three top 3 singles on the trot 2011 was undoubtedly her solo chart zenith, and when Scherzinger performed the single on the final of BGT and Graham Norton sales were bound to follow. Sadly it was released the same week as Example recorded the highest weekly tally for a number one in 10 weeks and Pitbull sold more at No 2 than any song had for 7 weeks, all which meant that despite a strong performance she had to settle for No 3.

Posted by: Gezza 7th September 2016, 03:10 PM

77. BEST THING I NEVER HAD- Beyonce (51,365) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

In the opposite instance of the Scherzinger chart week, Beyonce’s second release from “4” was up against example and Jason Derulo who both put in decreasing performances on the previous week but still outpaced her by 9k and 3k respectively.

Posted by: Gezza 7th September 2016, 03:13 PM

Thread will take a few days break as I'm away- Back on Saturday!

Posted by: Jade 8th September 2016, 12:56 PM

'Just Can't Get Enough' was such an improvement on the awful 'The Time (Dirty Bit)' that came before it. Quite different and refreshing for them.

'Bang Bang Bang' was such an incredible single from Mark Ronson. It remains his best for me! Wonderfully quirky. I even had a soft spot for 'The Bike Song' but obviously that was a bit too WTF to properly connect with the public and set the charts alight.

Most of Nicole Scherzinger's solo output is dreadful but 'Right There' is one of a few exceptions. I'd much rather have seen that top the chart than 'Don't Hold Your Breath'!

'Shine A Light' has held up really well over the years. I actually prefer it nowadays far more than I did at the time!

I agree with Jordan regarding the two Katy Perry features. 'Starstrukk' was something a bit different and quite fun but there's absolutely nothing to 'If We Ever Meet Again'. Very dull.

Finally, I do remember when 'S&M' was censored to 'Come On' on Radio 1 laugh.gif That Rihanna era was SO big, I would have liked to see her get three #1s in a row from it as 'S&M' is a great song.

Posted by: gooddelta 8th September 2016, 01:54 PM

I love Bang Bang Bang, quite impressive that such an unusual song shifted 50k in its first week and shame that wasn't enough for a top five.

That 50k for McFly must have been significantly more than quite a lot of their #1s got in the first week laugh.gif

Posted by: BillyH 8th September 2016, 02:56 PM

Think I remember a fair few people on this site predicting Bang Bang Bang was gonna flop, which made it all the more special when it went top ten! Great track.

Not massively keen on the others on this page but S&M is one of the few Rihanna tracks I can stand, maybe cus it was played so much during my clubbing peak so brings back enjoyable memories.

That 50k for McFly must have been significantly more than quite a lot of their #1s got in the first week laugh.gif

Iirc, ~30k became the norm for any McFly release (#1 or otherwise) from 'Please Please' through to 'Lies'. laugh.gif

76. GOIN CRAZY- Dizzee Rascal Featuring Robbie Williams (51,430) #5

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2013

Back in the summer of 2013 and those familiar strong sellers of Passenger, Robin Thicke and Naughty Boy were still denying higher peaks to some good sellers including this track. The original chorus was apparently done with Example but Dizzee didn’t think it quite work so it was handed to Robbie, it became his penultimate top 10 hit to date!

75. LIKE A G6- Far East Movement Featuring Cataracts and Dev (51,519) #6

No 1 in 2 weeks of 2010

Not quite the hit here it was in the US where it went all the way to No 1, but certainly it created a big splash when it soared 51-6 in November 10. Dev’s track “Booty Bounce” serves as its chorus and the outfit would final get a UK No 1 albeit as a feature act on The Bingo Players song “Get Up” over 2 years later.

74. WAITING FOR LOVE- Avicii (51,592) #6

No 1 in 2 weeks of 2015

Co-written and co-produced by Martin Garrix it was originally intended to be credited as a full “duet” with lyrics reportedly to be sung by John Legend, it didn’t turn out that way and in the end Cherry Ghost singer Simon Aldred got the gig.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 10th September 2016, 06:04 PM

Thank gosh none of those last three got anywhere near the top spot, all horrendous.

And Dev got at #1 as a feature with JLS! Can't blame you if you forgot about that, it's terrible.

73. COLLIDE- Leona Lewis/ Avicii (51,913) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks of 2011

Up to this point Tim Berling hadn’t had a top 40 single under his “Avicii” name but the controversy over Lewis and Syco using his track “Penguin” without authorisation it was claimed. Naturally as the first release from a new album Lewis was keen to have a substantive hit to lead the campaign and once the matter was cleared up with a joint credit sales seemed to indicate all was well though by the time the album saw the light of the day this version of the track was replaced.

Posted by: Gezza 11th September 2016, 11:53 AM

72. FOR THE FIRST TIME- The Script (52,126) #4

No 1 in 2 weeks of 2010

Though it peaked at No 4, these sales were actually achieved in its debut week when the song arrived at No 5! A new single from their second album perhaps helps to explain the high sales and the promo features Bono’s daughter. It’s who you know you see.

Posted by: Gezza 11th September 2016, 11:56 AM

71. BLIND FAITH- Chase & Status (52,853) #5

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

It isn’t quite “End Credits” but then what is. This single came with a gloriously early 90s themed promo and also became the 362nd (approx) top 10 single to sample Loleatta Holloway’s “Love Sensation”. It remains their joint highest peaker and in a couple of weeks of the year could have gone much further with those sales.

Posted by: danG 12th September 2016, 07:03 AM

poor Waiting For Love, that really deserved to be a massive #1.

Posted by: Gezza 12th September 2016, 04:58 PM

70. E.T- Katy Perry Featuring Kanye West (52,988) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2011

“On The Floor” and “Party Rock Anthem” stopped it going top 2 but “E.T” came with guest rap with Kanye West and a promo which collected MTV video awards for special effects. In the US it gave her a fourth straight No 1 and though it didn’t do as well here those sales are impressive.

Posted by: Gezza 12th September 2016, 05:00 PM

69. THE HILLS- The Weeknd (54,724) #3

No 1 in 2 weeks in 2015

One of the biggest new acts of last year The Weeknd may have had two No 3 hits but only one sold enough to make the top in any week of the year, this track. It actually sold more in the same week as Adele and Justin Bieber went head to head each recording 6 figure openings so no surprise that it dipped 3-5 whilst increasing sales!

Posted by: Gezza 12th September 2016, 05:02 PM

Tomorrow we move on those tracks which could have topped the charts in at least 3 weeks of their respective years!

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 12th September 2016, 05:29 PM

68. DISCO LOVE- The Saturdays (51,490) #5

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2013

The Saturdays 13th and final top 10 hit is up next and actually sold a rather respectable amount for a No 5 hit as we move from 2 weeks to 3 potential weeks that it could have entered at the top. A glut of promotion accompanied the release along with the usual Buzzjack commotion.

Posted by: Gezza 13th September 2016, 04:47 PM

67. DEAR DARLIN- Olly Murs (52,150) #5

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2013

Robin Thicke- check, Daft Punk- check, Passenger-check , Naughty Boy- yes all present, virtually an A-Z of 2013’s biggest hits stopped Olly scoring an impressive No 1 with this. That would have been his 5th chart topper but he’s still waiting!

Posted by: Gezza 13th September 2016, 04:50 PM

66. JEALOUSY- Will Young (53,224) #5

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

Becoming his first top 5 single in 5 years “Jealousy” was a return to chart fortunes for Young when released in 2011. It was released simultaneously with the album “Echoes” which sped to No 1, that may have detracted sales from the single though clearly it didn’t do badly despite that.

Posted by: Gezza 14th September 2016, 05:59 PM

65. MR KNOW IT ALL- Kelly Clarkson (53,307) #4

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

A return to the top 10 after two and a half years missing, Clarkson performed the track on X Factor which gave it the boost needed to climb 6-4 to record this sale, it’s actually more than she sold to top the charts back in 2009 with “My Life Would Suck Without You”.

Posted by: Gezza 14th September 2016, 06:04 PM

64. SUMMERTIME SADNESS- Lana Del Rey Vs Cedric Gervais (53,577) #4

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2013

Lana never sold more copies of any single in a week than she did of this in its third week at No 4, not bad considering that the record company didn’t like the mix of the song done by Cedric Gervais, only becoming convinced after it started to garner radio support and making the dance charts.

Posted by: Gezza 14th September 2016, 06:10 PM

63. YOU DON’T OWN ME- Grace Featuring G- Eazy (55,230) #4

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2015

Updating Lesley Gore’s 1963 US #2 hit was an inspired idea and so was getting Quincy Jones in to produce it as he’d also done the original. Topping the Australian charts in May 2015 it was helped to its peak after being performed by Lauren Murray on last year’s “X Factor”.

Posted by: Gezza 15th September 2016, 07:38 PM

62. POISON- Rita Ora (55,855) #3

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2014

Originally looking like her 5th No 1 single when it topped initial sales flashes this track ended up falling behind Tinie Tempah and Lost Frequencies as the week progressed. Co-written by Kate Nash it previewed Ora’s second album which has been delayed to record label issues.

Posted by: Gezza 15th September 2016, 07:41 PM

61. WHERE DEM GIRLS AT- David Guetta Featuring Nicki Minaj and Flo Rida (55,959)

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

Back in the days when Guetta dominated the charts, this spent a fortnight at No 3 actually increasing its sales in its second week to this total though it actually fell further behind the chart topper (10k to 12k) as it sold more. The power of Bruno Mars and LMFAO combined to bar his entry to the top 2.

60. THE A TEAM- Ed Sheeran (57,607) #3

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

The song that introduced most of us to Ed Sheeran, it opened with an impressive tally on its way to becoming a million seller. Eventually it would well and truly outpace Calvin Harris’ “Bounce” and Example’s “Changed The Way You Kiss Me” which held it at bay on this particular week.

Posted by: danG 15th September 2016, 08:06 PM

Whatever happened to Rita Ora? She had a top 3 hit, then the follow-up missed the top 20, and she featured on a Sigma hit, but she hasn't released a single this year yet.

She was always more interested in being a celebrity than being a musician. She's judged on more TV shows than she's had albums.

59. IT GIRL- Jason Derulo (58,118) #4

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

Chosen as a second single from his album “Future Present” apparently to show the contrast from his single “Don’t Wanna Go Home”, perhaps Derulo should have stuck to what sold as that hit had made No 1. This opened with sales some 18k lower but even then it could have hit the top!

Posted by: Gezza 16th September 2016, 06:02 PM

58. GOTTA BE YOU- One Direction (59,461) #3

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

The boys second single was ahead of the field in the midweeks thanks in part to launching it on the X Factor but as the week it couldn’t hold on ending up 7k adrift of Rihanna and Calvin Harris at No 1 and 2k behind Flo Rida, not to worry two weeks later they’d be No 1 thanks to their credit on the X Factor finalists track that year.

57. COMING HOME- Diddy, Dirty Money Featuring Skylar Grey (59,572) #4

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

Diddy’s short lived group project Dirty Money produced one top 20 hit in the form of this track, it increased its sales by 10k in its second week but could only maintain its No 4 chart position as Ke$ha debuted at No 1 whom he mentions in the song!

Posted by: paulgilb 16th September 2016, 10:12 PM

A couple of the recent ones seem to have the wrong year - It Girl and Coming Home were both 2011 (and It Girl was #4, not #3). Hopefully their positions in this list are correct!

56. YOU NEED ME, I DON’T NEED YOU- Ed Sheeran (60,041) #4

No 1 in 3 weeks in 2011

Until 2014’s “Sing” this was Sheeran’s highest weekly sales singles wise, his second single it was a re-recording of a 2009 track and was only 13k off the pace , and of course it is his third appearance on this rundown with tracks from his debut album!

Accidently discovered by the group when messing around on their producers laptop, this track was issued as their second single over “Welcome To The Jungle”. It was up against massive hits from Pharrell and Clean Bandit though- sad times.

54. ALL THE LOVERS- Kylie Minogue (52,455) #3

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2010

Documenting the last time that Minogue was even vaguely in with a shot at No 1, “All The Lovers” debuted at No 4 before falling to No 6 then back up to No 3 when the CD was issued (remember those days haha). That’s when the track scored the above sale, it was only 2k away from No 2 but a whopping 41k away from deposing Katy Perry.

This song was such a banger. I couldn't believe it was by a supposed 'girlband' when I first found that out! I still reckon they should've stayed away from the "we're a girlband" angle and just faked that they were the front for a producer, Boney M/Vengaboys style - I feel like Braveheart definitely had crossover fans who would not have knowingly listened to anything a girlband put out.

53. WILD- Jessie J Featuring Big Sean & Dizzee Rascal (55,219) #5

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2013

First single from the infamously tricky second album this marked Jessie J’s return to the chart and not a bad first week sale. Naturally (like so many songs in this thread) it came up against 2013’s million sellers (Blurred Lines/ Get Lucky/ Let Her Go/ La La La) and so could go no higher.

Posted by: Gezza 19th September 2016, 05:30 PM

52. IT’S MY PARTY- Jessie J (55,288) #3

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2013

And here’s her follow up! Selling just 69 copies more it entered a couple places higher thanks to less competition. Apparently it’s Jessie J’s response to all her haterz- so there you go Buzzjack take note….

51. EAT SLEEP RAVE REPEAT- Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr Featuring Beardyman (55,743) #3

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2013

It had been a long time since Fatboy Slim had been in the top 10 (11 years) and even longer since he’d been in the top 3 (13 years) but the wait was over when this track powered into the No 3 position. It was helped on its way by a Calvin Harris remix which rejuvenated the song after it did nothing on its June release.

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2013

Following up their chart topping “Thrift Shop” this one didn’t do too badly until it ran into “Get Lucky/ Waiting All Night” and the ride was over. Apparently it was the most streamed song of 2013 on Spotify- who knew

49. RELOAD- Sabastian Ingrosso/ John Martin/ Tommy Trash (57,049) #3

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2013

Originally dating from 2012 this was re-recorded with the vocals of John Martin and released post SHM it became by far his biggest “solo” hit. Selling a cool 57k in its first week and was still lingering in the top 200 some 4 months after release.

Posted by: Gezza 20th September 2016, 07:50 PM

48. IN2- WSTRN (57,311) #4

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2015

Whilst Adele and Justin Bieber were fighting for the top spot this rushed 60-4 when available digitally. Originally credited to Akelle Charles featuring Haile and Louis Rei it was picked up by a major label and the guys adopted the name WSTRN pre release.

47. TOO CLOSE- Alex Clare (58,284) #4

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2012

A bit of early-ish Diplo here on production duties, this track gained popularity through use on the commercial for Microsoft Internet Explorer 9, it’s also co-written by the drummer from 00’s band Speedway who themselves scored a top 10 hit back in 2003 with their version of “Genie In A Bottle”.

Posted by: Gezza 21st September 2016, 05:03 PM

46. GIRL ON FIRE- Alicia Keys (58,537) #5

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2012

Another song launched with an X Factor performance, and again the biggest weekly sale of any Keys single this decade. It was of course the first single from her album which didn’t harm sales either, it was just 3 k away from a top 3 debut.

45. EUPHORIA- Loreen (62,148) #3

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2012

I still recall the general stanning for this track on Buzzjack the week this came out- in all fairness it was a genuine moment when it seemed that Eurovision was generally producing a winning track which didn’t look out of place in the UK pop charts. It became the highest charting Eurovision winning single since Katrina & The Waves in 1997 and the highest non UK winning track since Johnny Logan in 1987.

No 1 in 4 weeks in 2011

Already having peaked at No 4 earlier in 2011 and in its 14th week on the chart it looked like a gentle decline down the charts for this track, that was until, of course, contestant Craig Colton covered the song on X Factor and boom it shot 12-4 with these sales, the best of its run.

43. HOTLINE BLING- Drake (57,584) #3

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2015

OK so THAT video added to its “notoriety” but the song was already on its way to big sales before it premiered, in the week that Adele and Justin both released massive singles this settled for No 3 but far from disgraced itself. The promo generated many parodies and sent the song up the charts, his chart record this year proves that it far from harmed his career. We also move to the 5 week marker on the rundown.

Posted by: Gezza 22nd September 2016, 05:42 PM

42. EARNED IT- The Weeknd (57,653) #4

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2015

Reinforcing what we all know- that a link to a successful movie can sell records this was of course tied to the film “50 Shades Of Grey”. Whilst this rose to No 4 it was only 5 k away from overpowering Mark Ronson and Hozier though another single plucked from the soundtrack, a certain “Love Me Like You Do” was a huge 61k in front.

Posted by: Gezza 23rd September 2016, 07:59 PM

41. L.A. LOVE (LA LA)- Fergie (57,834) #3

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2015

Allegedly meant to herald a second solo album (it’s all gone quiet on that front) this became Fergie’s first top 3 hit in 8 years but much like the Weeknd it was Mark Ronson and Hozier that did the damage to her chart fortunes.

Posted by: Gezza 23rd September 2016, 08:01 PM

40. R U CRAZY- Conor Maynard (60,991) #4

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2013

Conor Conor, where it did it go wrong? This was his lead single from a second album which seems to have been cancelled and replaced with a covers album instead. Subsequent singles have “Underwhelmed” it’s fair to say and his chart fortunes have faded but it started out well enough anyway with Labrinth on co-writing and production!

Posted by: Gezza 23rd September 2016, 08:04 PM

39. SONNENTANZ (SUN DON’T SHINE)- Klangkarussell Featuring Will Heard (60,991) #3

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2013

A hit all across Europe in late 2012 as an instrumental, it had added vocals by Will Heard for its UK release and blazed a trail into the top 3 in the summer of 13 behind Ellie Goulding and Avicii. A good start for the Austrian duo though they haven’t troubled the top 75 since.

Posted by: danG 23rd September 2016, 09:35 PM

Sonnentanz wub.gif lush summer tune, glad it was such a hit.

can't say i'm disappointed it missed #1 when Avicii was in front of them though.

Posted by: Defaze 24th September 2016, 12:28 AM

Still in awe that Fergie managed to nab a #3 hit only last year. Granted, that was before the switch to OA/OS. But still, streaming was prevalent enough, and it's not like the song itself screams 'hit'. That said, I'd don't think it particularly warrants the 'unlucky' label despite its impressive debut sales, since its chart run was pretty naff iirc.

Catching up--plenty of my all-time faves appearing, including Jar Of Hearts, Can't Hold Us, and Euphoria wub.gif R U Crazy really impressed me, a huge shame Conor didn't follow it up with anything!

Also a correction: Eat Sleep Rave Repeat and Can't Hold Us both charted in 2013, not 2012.

38. TRAMPOLINE- Tine Tempah Featuring 2Chainz (61,014) #3

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2013

And just two weeks before Klangkarussel there was this new entry at No 3 and again Avicii was one of the acts that outsold him. For Tempah this was the first release from his second album “Demonstration” though ultimately the album failed to yield a chart topping single.

37. HARLEM SHAKE- Baaur (61,951) #3

No 1 in 5 weeks in 2013

Internet meme that became a chart hit- this was first released in the summer of 2012 and did nothing until its promo started to get attention, parodies, and basically folk making their own versions of the dance. It took off charging 39-22-15-6-3 on the daily sales flashes in the week it made No 3. However in its second week at No 3 its sales jumped by 46%, like most internet phenomena, we all got tired of it and moved on quite quickly.

36. KICKSTARTS- Example (53,757) #3

No 1 in 6 weeks in 2010

If it wasn’t for that pesky world cup generating hits for K’naan and Dizzee Rascal then this would have made the top spot but in the end it was trounced languishing behind the No 2 spot by 23k, but it would have been a chart topper in 6 weeks of the year.

Posted by: Riser 25th September 2016, 12:05 AM

I was actually impressed with Harlem Shake's chart run, it spent 10 weeks in the top 40 if I remember correctly! That didn't seem like a lot compared to Gangnam Style and Thrift Shop though. I'm glad it was a bigger hit than The Fox anyway.

Only 8 weeks in the top 40, plus a further 2 in the top 75:

35. SHE SAID- Plan B (54,539) #3

No 1 in 6 weeks in 2010

Failing by just 200 copies to hit No 2 this was impressive opening tally Plan B in 2010 though it lagged behind Scouting For Girls by 17k. The promo features Skins actress Kaya Scodelario and This Is England’s Vicky McLure

34. JUST BE GOOD TO GREEN- Professor Green Featuring Lily Allen (55,779) #5

No 1 in 6 weeks in 2010

With opening sales far higher than his first (No 3) hit “I Need You Tonight” these sales have only been bettered once by the man himself, naturally on the chart topping “Read All About It”. In this particular week though the entire top 6 were within 25k of each other though it was B.o.B who got the chart topper.

Posted by: Gezza 25th September 2016, 02:42 PM

33. MISSING YOU- The Saturdays (57,157) #3

No 1 in 6 weeks in 2010

Just under 4k away from the top spot and a midweek chart topper the Saturdays make a second appearance on this list. In the end both Flo Rida (their old enemy) and Eminem/ Rihanna managed to slip past them at the death but on the upside they make this list!

Posted by: danG 25th September 2016, 07:41 PM

I still remember being so relieved that Missing You didn't make #1, what a non-event of a song.

I agree- though the remix (posted) improves it considerably! biggrin.gif

I so badly wanted Just Be Good To Green to be #1, and now I see that it could've been on a different week sob.gif

Posted by: Gezza 26th September 2016, 06:06 PM

32. IRIS- Goo Goo Dolls (64,992) #3

No 1 in 6 weeks in 2011

Released 3 times in the 90s/00s it peaked at No 50, 26 and 39 respectively, but naturally the X Factor is responsible for the song surging to No 3 in 2011. All eyes were on the battle between Maroon 5 and Sak Noel but this actually came within 11k of upsetting the odds- all thanks to Frankie Cocozza.

Posted by: Gezza 26th September 2016, 06:09 PM

31. WHEREVER YOU WILL GO- Charlene Soraia (66,674) #3

No 1 in 6 weeks in 2011

A hit after it was used in a Twinings tea commercial, Soraia’s brief brush with fame came in the form of this cover of the Calling’s 2002 No 3 hit. She was a graduate from the BRIT school attending at the same time as Kate Nash and Adele.

Posted by: Mack 26th September 2016, 06:11 PM

That cover of 'Wherever You Will Go' was pretty bad to be honest with you.

Posted by: Gezza 26th September 2016, 06:12 PM

30. POISON- Nicole Scherzinger (57,425) #3

No 1 in 7 weeks in 2010

Launched with an X Factor performance (long before she became a judge) this become Scherzinger’s highest placed solo track upon release but it couldn’t compete with the X Factor Finalists who stole the show that week. It’s also a prime slice of RedOne in full effect.

Posted by: Gezza 27th September 2016, 05:13 PM

29. UNTIL YOU WERE GONE- Chipmunk featuring Esmee Denters (57,536) #3

No 1 in 7 weeks in 2010

I didn’t realise just how many “feuds” Chipmunk, or chip as we call him these days, is involved with, namely with Bugzy Malone and Tinie Tempah. Anyway back in the days when he was a popstar he made this with Timberlake’s protégé Esmee Denters.

Posted by: Gezza 27th September 2016, 05:18 PM

28. MIAMI2IBIZA- Swedish House Mafia Featuring Tinie Tempah (57,954) #4

No 1 in 7 weeks in 2010

Such was the great year that Tinie Tempah had had in 2010 that this was to become his lowest charting single from four releases. Not so for SHF who went three places higher than debut hit “One” and actually outsold that track.

Posted by: Gezza 27th September 2016, 05:20 PM

27. READY FOR YOUR LOVE- Gorgon City Featuring MNEK (71,966) #4

No 1 in 7 weeks in 2014

Starting out in second place (to Will.i.am) this dropped over the course of the week to ultimately enter the charts at No 4 but these are exceptional sales for that position. The following week these sales would have given the track the No 2 slot- the difference a week can make.

Posted by: cqmerqn 27th September 2016, 06:53 PM

Is there anymore Ellie tracks coming up? I would've thought that Your Song would be here smile.gif

Posted by: danG 27th September 2016, 07:04 PM

i forgot Gorgon City sold that much on week 1!! if only we got deep house hits as big as those now.

absolutely love Miami 2 Ibiza too wub.gif

-x-

@cqmerqn Your Song won't appear as it made #2.

Posted by: John-James 27th September 2016, 07:14 PM

I hope Born This Way is relatively high. I don't really like the song but it should have gone #1

Posted by: cqmerqn 27th September 2016, 07:42 PM

Ahh ok thanks.

Maybe How Long Will I Love You then.

Posted by: Gezza 28th September 2016, 04:58 PM

26. FIREWORK- Katy Perry (58,353) #3

No 1 in 8 weeks in 2010

Moving up to the 8 week mark now with Perry’s million selling “Firework”, these sales were actually recorded the week the song made No 4, incredibly the song's weekly sales dropped as it rose into the top 3 the following week. The Video incidentally is filmed in Budapest fact fans.

Posted by: Gezza 28th September 2016, 05:01 PM

25. STEREO HEARTS- Gym Class Heroes Featuring Adam Levine (68,287) #3

No 1 in 8 weeks in 2011

A tale of Adam Levine Vs Adam Levine really. Whilst “We Found Love” was streets ahead of the competition this was fighting Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” for the runner up spot. It was a return for GCH who had been out of the chart game for 3 years though admittedly Frontman Travie McCoy had been popping up on the occasion hit in the interim.

Posted by: Gezza 28th September 2016, 05:04 PM

24. ALL FIRED UP- The Saturdays (68,922) #3

No 1 in 8 weeks in 2011

And talking of “Moves Like Jagger” it was in the mix again here though to be honest “All Fired Up” started the week just a few hundred copies short of Pixie Lott (when she was a chart force eh) and slide further behind as the week progressed ending up 20k adrift of the top spot in the end. Only their No 1 single “What About Us” ultimately sold more in its first week than this track.

Posted by: Gezza 29th September 2016, 09:19 PM

23. WRAPPED UP- Olly Murs Featuring Travie McCoy (75,081) #3

No 1 in 8 weeks in 2014

In sheer sales this is actually the 11th highest on this survey, sadly though it was also the week of Band Aid 2014 who sold 312k to arrive at No 1 (which featured the man himself) whilst Clean Bandit managed 81k leaving this for the bronze position. It was launched by the traditional X Factor performance and some stunning sales to boot.

Posted by: Gezza 29th September 2016, 09:21 PM

22. THINKING OF ME- Olly Murs (59,658) # 4

No 1 in 9 weeks in 2010

More Olly for you, again launched with the help of X Factor (he’s a lucky boy) this was originally meant to include a rap by Professor Green. Not sure if that would have provided him with the additional sales required to top the charts but other X Factor acts like JLS and X Factor finalists ended up ahead of him so a mixed blessing for him and that show.

Posted by: Gezza 29th September 2016, 09:25 PM

21. HAPPINESS- Alexis Jordan (60,153) #3

No 1 in 9 weeks in 2010

So whilst “Firework” was clocking up impressive numbers at No 4 this was generating bigger numbers at No 3. Jordan of course found fame on “America’s Got Talent” and was signed up by Jay Z. Heavily sampling Deadmau5’s “Brazil” it stormed into the charts at No 3 but couldn’t overcome the power house’s of Rihanna and Cheryl Cole who were scrapping for the top spot.

Posted by: Gezza 29th September 2016, 09:26 PM

So there we are- we've finally arrived at the top 20 Unluckiest tracks of the last 6 years- We'll go into the top 20 tomorrow!

Posted by: danG 29th September 2016, 09:29 PM

'Happiness' is quite brilliant, I definitely appreciated it more when I found out it was deadmau5's production too. One of my fave dance music producers, though unfortunately he hasn't had a hit single in ages as he doesn't make commercial singles anymore.

Posted by: BillyH 29th September 2016, 10:12 PM

Oh, I didn't know that was actually a deadmau5 sample on Happiness - I always thought it was someone copying his style but more commercialised. It's a great track with some fond memories of that (bloody cold) winter.

I don't even know what Wrapped Up sounds like :/ This thread is really showing me how depressingly low my musical knowledge got from about 2013! Drawing a blank at most hits from that year on...somehow I even completely missed Can't Hold Us at the time, which judging by its sales I'm wondering how the hell that was even possible. Thrift Shop on the other hand I remember easily.

Going back a few pages but to think that as recently as 2010 a CD single still worked wonders for a chart performance - 'All The Lovers' is the last time I can remember that happening, they were almost extinct in HMVs even then.

Posted by: Gezza 30th September 2016, 08:31 PM

20. FOURFIVE SECONDS- Rihanna/ Kanye West/ Paul McCartney (61,554) #3

No 1 in 9 weeks in 2015

A new Rihanna single heralding a new album is always a big deal and no doubt many an eyebrow was raised when this emerged but it did its job, 11 weeks inside the top 10. These sales came from its first week at No 3 though it was still 39k away from the top.

Posted by: Gezza 30th September 2016, 08:35 PM

19. GRAVITY- DJ Fresh Featuring Ella Eyre (62,878) #4

No 1 in 10 weeks in 2015

Both acts had form in hitting the top, Eyre on Rudimental’s “Waiting All Night” and DJ Fresh on both “Louder” and “Hot Right Now” in the early years of the decade so on paper this was a dream combo. Up against massive sellers from Mark Ronson, Ellie Goulding, and Hozier, it failed to dent the top 3 but it is the third highest placed No 4 hit on this list.

Posted by: Gezza 30th September 2016, 08:38 PM

18. SWEET LOVIN- Sigala Featuring Bryn Christopher (64,351) #3

No 1 in 10 weeks in 2015

Vocals from I see MONSTAS frontman Bryn Christopher proved a success for Sigala’s follow up to the chart topping “Easy Love”. The latter song knocked Bieber from the top and similarly this was aiming to knock the man himself off again, this time around he was No 1 with “Love Yourself” but it wasn’t to be. Streaming knocked it down to No 3 which at least means it features on this rundown.

Posted by: Gezza 1st October 2016, 01:50 PM

17. BLOW ME (ONE LAST KISS)- Pink (70,207) #3

No 1 in 11 weeks in 2012

She might have lost a midweek chart topper with this track (the eventual winner was Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You”) but Pink’s “Blow Me” would still have been No 1 in 11 different weeks through the year. After the “Funhouse” era had showed her capable again of No 1 singles this was her first single from “The Truth About Love” her first studio album in 4 years and so perhaps it is no surprise that sales were so high.

Posted by: Gezza 1st October 2016, 01:54 PM

16. BARBRA STREISAND- Duck Sauce (66,964) #3

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2010

For some reason I’d completely forgotten that Duck Sauce contained a certain Armand Van Helden, but back in 2010 “Barbra Streisand” became a smash hit sampling the Boney M track “Gotta Go Home”. It was the last we heard of the collaboration between Helden and A-Track though they still produce the odd track.

Posted by: Gezza 1st October 2016, 01:58 PM

15.BILLIONAIRE- Travie McCoy Featuring Bruno Mars (67,000) #3

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2010

On a hiatus from Gym Class Heroes, and post Katy Perry, Travie hit it big with this track co-written and co-produced by Bruno Mars. The inspiration for the song apparently linked to a visit to the UK where Mars’ record label gave him £240 to spend over 11 days in London- hard times.

Posted by: Gezza 2nd October 2016, 12:14 PM

14. LET THE SUN SHINE- Labrinth (67,868) #3

No 1 for 12 weeks in 2010

Becoming Simon Cowell’s first non talent show signing in 6 years, Labrinth arrived on the pop scene in tandem with Tinie Tempah on “Pass Out” and “Frisky” but later in that year Labrinth branched out on his own with this track. In entering at No 3 it saw the rapper stall behind his old collaborator Tinie and of course Bruno Mars who was never far from the top in 2010.

Posted by: Gezza 2nd October 2016, 12:17 PM

13. DNA- Little Mix (72,044) #3

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2012

A spot of early Little Mix now, their third single in fact but their first to fail to hit the top but given those sales it would have been enough in 12 weeks of the year. The promo takes its lead from the film “Sin City” and looked like it could have made the top lagging only slightly behind Bruno Mars (again- what is it with him) but was outstripped eventually by Mars and 1D.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 2nd October 2016, 12:23 PM

DNA 💖

Posted by: Defaze 2nd October 2016, 12:27 PM

Crazy that DNA was almost 4 years ago. I remember being gutted when this missed the top spot, but I'm glad in hindsight, since its chart run was pretty terrible.

I imagine 'Move' is still to come. Now that would've made a cracker of a #1.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd October 2016, 05:07 PM

12.WITH UR LOVE- Cher Lloyd Ft Mike Posner (74,730) #4

No 1 in 12 weeks in 2011

Fresh from her stint on X Factor Lloyd scored a No 1 with “Swagger Jagger” in the summer of 2011 courting a fair amount of negative press in the process, during her X factor “journey” she’d performed “Cooler Than me” so it was perhaps appropriate that she roped in Mike Posner for her follow up “With UR love”. The Song debuted at No 4 but sold more than her No 1 single did in its first week, them’s the breaks.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd October 2016, 05:09 PM

11. G.D.F.R- Flo Rida Ft Sage The Gemini & Lookas (67,972) #3

No 1 in 13 weeks in 2015

Otherwise known as “Goin Down For Real” in case you wondered, it was released in the US back in October 14 but took until April 2015 to peak at No 8 there whilst almost going top 2 here. It lead midweek before being overtaken by the Comic Relief single from Sam Smith and (At the death) by Years & Years.

Posted by: Gezza 3rd October 2016, 05:10 PM

Starting tomorrow the big Top 10!!

Posted by: Lenny 3rd October 2016, 05:25 PM

'Going Down For Real' not 'Get Down For Real' wink.gif

This grew on me in the end, bit different for Flo Rida at least - not so watered down.

Posted by: Gezza 4th October 2016, 04:33 PM

10. CAN YOU HEAR ME (AYAYAYA)- Wiley Featuring Skepta, JME & Ms D (75,948) #3

No 1 in 14 weeks in 2012

Missing in action for 18 months now Wiley has accumulated 7 top 10 singles so far- who knew. His knack of returning to the big 10 every two years hit the skids in 2014 but then we all know that he’ll never outdo “Wearing My Rolex”.

Posted by: Gezza 4th October 2016, 04:37 PM

9. WALKS LIKE RIHANNA- The Wanted (76,332) #4

No 1 in 16 weeks in 2013

Although well past their chart topping days somewhat incredibly this could have topped the charts in 16 weeks of the year- a surprise certainly to me. Released 6 months before the delayed third (and to date final) album, the video was a parody of several boyband promo’s of the past and proved that they could still sell at a chart topping rate, the end was, however, nigh for them.

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 4th October 2016, 05:29 PM

Good that neither of those became #1's.

I Really Like You to win wub.gif

Posted by: danG 4th October 2016, 07:52 PM

Can You Hear Me heart.gif Really liked that song, even more than 'Heatwave' actually though only slightly. Both were choons.

I'd really like Wiley to return to that more commercial dance-rap sound but it seems he's fixed on making grime now that that's popular amongst his fanbase.

Posted by: Gezza 5th October 2016, 06:07 PM

8. WILD HEART- The Vamps (83,130) #3

No 1 in 16 weeks in 2014

Honouring their usual path of being frontloaded, the Vamps second single started out the week in the runner up spot only to slip a lot by the end of the week, but “Wild Heart” opened with a healthier tally than debut hit “Can We Dance” though that only missed out on No 1 by just over a thousand copies.

Posted by: Gezza 5th October 2016, 06:09 PM

7. BANG BANG- Will.i.am (80,156) #3

No 1 in 17 weeks in 2013

Composed for the film “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack that perhaps to explain the “Charleston” sample. It was his 11th top 10 single but oddly enough his first (and to date only) top 10er as a solo credit and as you can see it was not far off becoming his 5th chart topper.

Posted by: Riser 6th October 2016, 03:11 AM

Nice to see one that was a post-album single and not a held-back release, although those week's sales were very much boosted from the Voice performance. I rather liked Bang Bang. biggrin.gif Hard to believe will.i.am had five top 3 singles in 2012-13 (not even counting Hall Of Fame)! And it just now occurred to me that Jessie J was a fellow Voice coach and had a song of the same name the following year ohmy.gif

Posted by: Addy K!ng 6th October 2016, 03:16 AM

6. BORN THIS WAY- Lady Gaga (82,487) #3

No 1 in 20 weeks in 2011

Talking of singles underperforming (real or imagined) this has to be one of the biggies in recent times. The release strategy of putting this on sale on a Friday saw over 61,000 copies sell as the song debuted at No 3 but the following week it lead from the off yet saw a 9k lead eroded first by Jessie J then Adele whose BRITS performance saw her storm to the top.

Posted by: Gezza 6th October 2016, 07:26 PM

5. GOLD FOREVER- The Wanted (82,490) #3

No 1 in 20 weeks in 2011

And just weeks after Gaga debuted with that The Wanted also arrived at No 3 with even more sales! That year’s Comic Relief single was given to the boys who had clocked up three top 20 hits already in 2010 including the chart topper “All Time Low”, this track was written by the same team as that hit, in addition to the writers penning many a chart topper for Westlife!

It debuted at #3 (I'm such a pedant sorry). Wow at Gold Forever being only 3 copies ahead of Born This Way on their respective peak weeks!

4. HOW LONG WILL I LOVE YOU- Ellie Goulding (82,872) #3

No 1 in 20 weeks in 2013

Children In Need single for the year, Goulding’s version of the Waterboys 1990 release gave a new lease of life to the re-issued “Halcyon Days” which finally topped the charts in January 2014 on the impetus.

Posted by: Gezza 7th October 2016, 05:39 PM

3.MOVE- Little Mix (83,070) #3

No 1 in 20 weeks in 2013

Launching that second album is always difficult and for an X Factor winning act it’s all done in a blaze of publicity which has seen many of them crash and burn. Not so Little Mix who navigated the whole thing with this lead single which shifted enough to easy top the charts in 20 weeks that year.

Tomorrow we'll see which record can lay claim to be the unluckiest track of the current decade!

Posted by: cqmerqn 7th October 2016, 05:44 PM

I love How Long Will I Love You smile.gif

It's a shame that it missed out!

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 8th October 2016, 01:45 AM

How Long Will I Love You and Move are both utterly fabulous tracks, both deserving of the top spot wub.gif

My fave still in the running, hope it wins!

2. I REALLY LIKE YOU- Carly Rae Jepsen (85,840) #3

No 1 in 22 weeks in 2015

If released just a fortnight later this would have become Jepsen’s second chart topper but it ran into Wiz Khalifa and Omi at their height so third place it was. Some were none too enamored with the rather “basic” lyrics in the chorus but in terms of earworm it certainly worked.

Posted by: Gezza 8th October 2016, 11:02 AM

1.LIVE WHILE WE’RE YOUNG- One Direction (87,008) #3

No 1 in 23 weeks in 2012

The Unluckiest record of the decade so far? Released as a first single from their second album “Take Me Home” there was so much pent up demand that the track took an early lead in the charts but had slipped to No 3 by Sunday. Facing criticism for the song’s theme (something to do with sex apparently) and it’s similarity to “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” didn’t appear to hamper sales, it also opened with the second biggest debut week sales by a UK artist on the US chart (after Elton’s “Candle In The Wind 97”).

Posted by: Gezza 8th October 2016, 11:03 AM

So that's it peeps! Hope you all enjoyed our rundown of some of the unluckiest tracks of the current decade! Thanks to all who contributed over the past few weeks.

Posted by: danG 8th October 2016, 11:33 AM

what a disappointing winner, at least it didn't chart at #1 anyway cause it's awful

Posted by: John-James 8th October 2016, 11:38 AM

I totally forgot about Carly cry.gif Shame it's success didn't translate into album sales

Posted by: paulgilb 8th October 2016, 05:52 PM

Thanks for another great list, Gezza!

Posted by: Riser 10th October 2016, 04:27 AM

Well I suppose it's fitting that the "unluckiest" goes to a song that would have been a poor #1. 1D was always hit and miss for me and I'm glad Live While We're Young and Gotta Be You were both misses. Amazing to see any song get 80k+ at #3 though, and to think these weren't that long ago!!

Thanks as always for your heroic efforts Gezza. wub.gif Looking forward to the next countdown, and I hope it's sooner rather than later! biggrin.gif
