Chris Brown Earns Third No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Indigo'
7/8/2019 by Keith Caulfield

Chris Brown notches his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new effort Indigo launches atop the list with 108,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 4, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 28,000 were in album sales.

Indigo’s first week was supported largely by streaming activity, as the set tallied 76,000 SEA units, which equates to 97.95 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s lengthy track list of 32 songs. It’s no surprise that Indigo was also the most-streamed album of the week in terms of total on-demand audio streams earned for its tunes. (Comparably, the album with the second-most streams in the tracking week, Lil Nas X’s 7, tallied 74.8 million on-demand audio streams from seven songs. More on Lil Nas X in a moment…)

Of Indigo’s total first-week launch, 28,000 of the sum is in album sales, supported by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with Brown's upcoming tour, along with merchandise/album bundles sold via his official website.

Indigo marks Brown’s third leader on the Billboard 200 and his 10th consecutive top 10 album (the entirety of his charting efforts). His first top 10 came with his No. 2-peaking self-titled debut effort, which was released in 2005. He claimed his first two No. 1s with consecutive releases in 2011 and 2012: F.A.M.E. and Fortune.

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Lil Nas X’s 7 holds steady in the runner-up slot for a second week, as the set earned 62,000 equivalent album units (down 20%). Of that sum, it sold 2,000 copies (down 52%). The album is driven mostly by streaming activity, led by its ubiquitous smash single “Old Town Road.”

Billie Eilish’s former No. 1, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, is stationary at No. 3, with 52,000 units (down 8%).

Rock duo The Black Keys tallies its fourth top 10 set, as Let’s Rock rumbles in at No. 4 with 52,000 equivalent album units. Of that figure, 41,000 were in album sales. The act previously visited the top 10 with Turn Blue (No. 1 in 2014), El Camino (No. 2, 2011) and Brothers (No. 3, 2010).

At No. 5, Chance the Rapper claims his highest-charting album, as his mixtape Acid Rap, first released for free in 2013, debuts after its official commercial and streaming release on June 28. The album bows with 40,000 equivalent album units earned, with 18,000 of that sum in album sales (boosted by merchandise/album bundles sold via his website). Acid Rap’s unit start also includes 20,000 in SEA units, which translates to 26.2 million on-demand audio streams for its songs during the week. Outside the top 10, two more Chance the Rapper titles hit the list, as his Coloring Book album re-enters at No. 46 (13,000 units; up 174%) and 2012 mixtape 10 Day bows at No. 72 (10,000 units). Coloring Book made its retail debut on June 28, after only being available as a streaming album, while 10 Day made its retail and streaming premiere (like Acid Rap).

Coloring Book previously marked Chance the Rapper’s highest-charting album on the Billboard 200, when it debuted and peaked at No. 8 on the June 4, 2016-dated list. The set also made history that week as the first streaming-exclusive album to reach the chart.

Khalid’s former No. 1 Free Spirit dips 5-6 with 38,000 equivalent album units (up 4%)

Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You slips 6-7 with 36,000 units (though up 8%).

Mustard earns his first Billboard 200 top 10, bowing at No. 8 with his star-studded effort Perfect Ten, which starts with just under 36,000 equivalent album units (of which 1,000 were in album sales). The 10-track album was fittingly released via Mustard’s own 10 Summers Records label (through Interscope Records). The album boasts the producer (formerly known as DJ Mustard) teaming up with the likes of Migos, Future, Meek Mill and Ella Mai. Mustard’s last album, 2014’s 10 Summers, debuted and peaked at No. 143 in 2014.

J Balvin and Bad Bunny’s joint album Oasis is the fifth and final debut in the new top 10, as the collaborative album enters at No. 9 with nearly 36,000 equivalent album units (of which 5,000 are in album sales). The album generated 30,000 SEA units in its first week, which equates to 39.3 million on-demand audio streams for its songs -- marking the biggest streaming debut for a Latin album released in 2019.

Oasis is the first top 10 for either J Balvin or Bad Bunny, as the former previously hit No. 15 in 2018 with Vibras, while the latter climbed to No. 11 earlier in 2019 with X 100PRE.

Closing out the new top 10 is Jonas Brothers’ former No. 1 Happiness Begins with 29,000 equivalent album units (down 28%).
