BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Buzzjack's favourite non-top 10 hit (2020); Results

Posted by: danuary 17th January 2021, 09:21 AM

Voting has now closed so let's get on with the results! Thanks for a big turnout. Firstly let's get out of the way all of the tracks literally no one cares for.

#57. 6ix9ine & Nicki Minaj - Trollz

UK chart run: 12-31-43-65-x [4 weeks]
Points: -16 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 08

Finishing 3rd in the Hatechart, and now dead last in this poll having received 8 sets of negative votes - the most for any song this year, without anyone attempting to save it from a negative score. It became 6ix9ine's 4th top 20 hit and hopefully his last now that the novelty of him coming back from prison seems to have worn off already.

#56. Vera Lynn - Land of Hope and Glory

UK chart run: 17-x [1 week]
Points: -02 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 01

Vera Lynn managed more chart relevance in 2020 than any year since the 1950s although it was due to a campaign that this managed to chart from those annoyed at the BBC ""banning"" the song being sung at the Proms. Perhaps if 'We'll Meet Again' were here instead she'd have a positive score.

#51. Skepta, Chip & Young Adz - Waze

UK chart run: 18-40-65-x [3 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

Well it seems like tradition now for at least one Young Adz song to appear in this list with zero points. A collab album with Skepta & Chip that no one on Buzzjack asked for got them this brief top 20 hit.

#51. GRM Daily pts. M Huncho & Dutchavelli - Burning

UK chart run: 13-18-28-37-41-51-54-62-72-x [9 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

Another rap song here now this time "by" the promotor GRM Daily who seem to get their name in the chart every so often. It featured two rappers that Buzzjack seem to not care for at all, so hardly a surprise this is on no points.

#51. Drake feat. Playboi Carti - Pain 1993

UK chart run: 17-62-x [2 weeks]
Points: ±00| Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

Drake managed a very brief hit with this following the mixtape release largely from hype from his fans surrounding it being a collab with Playboi Carti. The song however ended up being a big disappointment so fell a lot quicker than you'd otherwise expect.

#51. Digga D - Chingy (It's Whatever)

UK chart run: 18-21-24-33-40-54-69-x [7 weeks]
Points: ±00| Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

Digga D managed two hits this year after getting out of prison further cementing himself as one of the biggest names in Drill. Not that Buzzjack care much for drill music clearly as this too gets no points.

#51. Da Beatfreakz feat. Dutchavelli, DigDat & B Young - 808

UK chart run: 20-25-35-38-51-65-x [6 weeks]
Points: ±00| Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

Another forgettable British rap hit here from production group Da Beatfreakz which also means Dutchavelli has both of his songs here scoring no points, and DigDat is also in this section for a 2nd year running after 'New Dior' got nothing last year.

Posted by: danuary 17th January 2021, 10:18 AM

#50. J Hus feat. Burna Boy - Play Play

UK chart run: 11-19-20-28-30-29-31-30-40-x [9 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 01 | Negative votes: 01

Saved at the last minute from a negative score, J Hus managed to get one reasonably sized hit this year with this track full of gun metaphors.

#48. S1mba feat. KSI - Loose

UK chart run: 14-28-32-46-50-54-62-73-x [8 weeks]
Points: +03 | Positive votes: 01 | Negative votes: 00

S1mba managed to get one big hit this year which was then followed up by this which got him a minor 2nd hit mostly by virtue of it featuring KSI.

#48. J Hus feat. Iceè tgm - Big Conspiracy

UK chart run: 19-40-x [2 weeks]
Points: +03 | Positive votes: 01 | Negative votes: 00

It seems like J Hus doesn't have much fans here as both his songs finish in the bottom ten. This one was only an album track anyhow.

#47. D-Block Europe feat. Aitch - UFO

UK chart run: 11-14-14-20-22-25-27-32-55-x [9 weeks]
Points: +06 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 04

D-Block Europe managed their highest peaking single last year although they're still awaiting a top 10 smash. This one was helped out by Aitch but doesn't do so well here also attracting a few negative scores which pushes it down 2 positions, although it still avoids bottom 10.

#46. Eminem feat. Ed Sheeran - Those Kinda Nights

UK chart run: 12-27-38-41-56 x [5 weeks]
Points: +09 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00

Eminem had two minor top 20s this year brought on by the album release. The first of these brought along an unwanted Ed Sheeran although it thankfully got overshadowed by "Godzilla" and fell rather quickly.

Posted by: JackTheeStallion 17th January 2021, 10:34 AM

I don't think I've heard the majority of those "hits", oops.

Posted by: JulianT 17th January 2021, 10:46 AM

That’s quite a funny list - lots of rap with a bit of Dame Vera thrown in. smile.gif

There are a few good tunes in there. Play Play is quite catchy but then the lyrics are just so off-putting.

Posted by: JosephStyles 17th January 2021, 01:34 PM

Loose was a bop and I quite liked the two J Hus songs actually, though none are surprising early exits.

Posted by: danuary 17th January 2021, 07:24 PM

#45. Bugzy Malone - M.E.N. III

UK chart run: 18-37-49-70-x [4 weeks]
Points: +11 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 01

Bugzy Malone managed a 2nd top 20 hit in 2020 and like his first one it was a rather minor hit only getting a handful of weeks in the chart. The song is the third track in his "M.E.N." series which was named after Manchester Evening News - and the first track released since his near-fatal motorcycle crash.

#44. StaySolidRocky - Party Girl

UK chart run: 53-34-28-24-18-17-16-13-17-17-18-25-27-61-74-x [15 weeks]
Points: +18 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00

Rocky (albeit not the more well known rapper with the nickname Rocky) managed to get this track to go viral on TikTok. Predictably it didn't get a whole lot of love on Buzzjack and he doesn't seem to have any sort of following as an artist so we most likely won't be seeing him back in the chart again.

#43. DJ Khaled feat. Drake - Popstar

UK chart run: 11-30-37-45-53-62-71-20-22-24-27-36-x [12 weeks]
Points: +19 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00

DJ Khaled & Drake got together as they often do and gave us two songs for the price of one. However it was only 'Greece' that managed to go top 10 with this track just missing out, however it went back in the top 20 following the music video which went viral for starring Justin Bieber in the role of Drake. Drake has no more songs left so it's not been that great of a year for him in terms of non-top 10 hits.

#42. Headie One feat. Young T & Bugsey - Princess Cuts

UK chart run: 11-17-22-27-32-37-43-60-72-x-55-x [10 weeks]
Points: +22 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00

Another British rap song and also the first of two collabs between Headie and Young T & Bugsey. This managed to out-peak 'Don't Rush' but didn't get quite as much longevity and finishes lower in this countdown as well.

#41. KSI feat. Trippie Redd - Wake Up Call

UK chart run: 11-28-38-61-x-53-64-75-x [7 weeks]
Points: +23 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00

KSI is back again with his highest track in the countdown meaning both his tracks miss the top 40 here. This one predictably entered fairly high from fanbase power (out-debuting Dua Lipa to the annoyance of Buzzjack), but sank rather quickly. It also gave Trippie Redd his first and so far only hit here although he is a lot bigger of a name in America.

Posted by: Bré 17th January 2021, 07:27 PM

I am despair that 'UFO' ended up as one of the higher UK rap songs when it is literally the worst one. x

Posted by: danuary 17th January 2021, 07:43 PM

#40. PartyNextDoor feat. Rihanna - Believe It

UK chart run: 12-17-22-28-33-32-34-32-40-40-43-x [11 weeks]
Points: +23 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00

Rihanna made the comeback that everyone had been begging for in 2020 although not with an album or even a single of her own but instead as a feature for PartyNextDoor which was a disappointment to many fans. I enjoyed the song but I hope she manages to put out some solo material soon.

#39. Juice WRLD feat. Halsey - Life's A Mess

UK chart run: 66-11-34-53-69-x [5 weeks]
Points: +25 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00

Juice WRLD's first posthumous album managed to give him a few extra hits, the briefest top 20 hit of them being 'Life's A Mess' which got to #11 from the boost of the album but quickly fell as 'Wishing Well' overtook in popularity. It was also the highest peak for Halsey in the year but she has another bigger hit yet to come.

#38. Nathan Dawe feat. Jaykae - Flowers

UK chart run: 57-61-49-34-34-23-16-21-24-21-17-13-12-13-14-15-17-14-19-20-22-27-19-17-30-39-40-74-x [28 weeks]
Points: +26 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 02

Nathan Dawe managed to break through last year with this cover of Sweet Female Attitude 'Flowers', not quite getting in the top 10 as the original but eventually being a much bigger hit in terms of chart longevity. It was fairly controversial here though as dance cover versions often are and one of my personal least fave dance hits of recent times as well.

#37. Justin Bieber & Benny Blanco - Lonely

UK chart run: 19-19-20-17-23-23-42-52-60-x-32-39-... [11+ weeks]
Points: +26 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 05

One of the most hated tracks on the list and also my personal least favourite being this recent single of Justin Bieber with producer Benny Blanco tagged on as well - thankfully not being quite as big as his other singles of the year.

#36. JP Saxe feat. Julia Michaels - If The World Was Ending

UK chart run: 75-74-74-x-61-68-66-41-38-35-31-24-25-16-14-14-16-20-19-20-44-48-62-68-73-x [24 weeks]
Points: +30 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 04

Another controversial song here from JP Saxe who got one of the big token MOR filler hits of the year with help from real life partner Julia Michaels and it being conveniently timed for what felt like the actual ending of the world.

Posted by: Bré 17th January 2021, 07:45 PM

That 36-38 section is full of horrors.

Posted by: JulianT 17th January 2021, 08:39 PM

I voted Lonely as my -2 although I listened to Men III the other day and all the gruesome details of his accident and thought maybe that should have got my dustbin vote instead.

Posted by: coi 17th January 2021, 09:25 PM

Glad that Life's A Mess managed to get in the top 40 here despite its very brief chart run. Popstar is a bit too low but otherwise few complaints, other than UFO being far too high.

Posted by: Dobbo. 18th January 2021, 09:56 AM

Well unsurprisingly I've lost 3 of my faves in Wake Up Call, UFO & Party Girl but wasn't expecting them to do anything laugh.gif

Flowers & If The World Was Ending both being out early make up for it. This City to follow very quickly plz.

#35. Eminem - Darkness

UK chart run: 17-37-59-x [3 weeks]
Points: +34 | Positive votes: 06 | Negative votes: 00

The second Eminem track and his highest one too, this one interpolating 'The Sound of Silence' and being written about the Las Vegas shootings... from the perspective of the gunman, in protest of current American gun violence and laws. Being Eminem, this wasn't even his most controversial moment of the year.

#34. Pop Smoke feat. Lil Baby & DaBaby - For The Night

UK chart run: 14-28-30-41-36-30-23-24-24-16-15-16-17-18-19-16-42-52-61-66-x [20 weeks]
Points: +36 | Positive votes: 05 | Negative votes: 00

Pop Smoke managed to get a lot of hits this year, although sadly he didn't live to see any of this huge success having been shot earlier in the year. This track didn't quite manage top ten but had great longevity and ended up just about making the year end list. It was also notable for guesting both the "babies" of modern rap.

#33. James Arthur - Train Wreck

UK chart run: 69-24-23-19-16-16-25-35-39-x-18-17-... [11+ weeks]
Points: +39 | Positive votes: 05 | Negative votes: 00

'Train Wreck' was put out in 2016 as just an album track and we were all blissfully unaware of it until TikTok decided to make it a thing prompting it to get a belated single push and now seemingly having better longevity than even the Sigala collab released just prior to this taking off.

#32. Juice WRLD - Wishing Well

UK chart run: 15-19-20-23-25-22-28-30-26-60-63-68-x-74-x [13 weeks]
Points: +44 | Positive votes: 07 | Negative votes: 00

The highest of the two Juice WRLD tracks is this one which had a little hand from everyone's least favourite producer Dr. Luke. The song was a big hit with his fanbase likely helped by its lyrics tackling his problems with drug addiction and depression.

#31. Sam Fischer - This City

UK chart run: 73-65-73-68-58-46-39-33-33-31-24-20-19-19-19-17-16-18-16-18-19-17-26-25-26-28-34-35-66-66-68-73-x [32 weeks]
Points: +49 | Positive votes: 07 | Negative votes: 00

Following JP Saxe earlier on the streaming playlists decided they needed another acoustic MOR ballad and so this took off helped by a little bit of TikTok traction earlier on. It ended up spending a lot longer in the chart than anyone wanted it too much to the annoyance of regular chart show listeners.

Posted by: danuary 18th January 2021, 04:48 PM

#30. Ariana Grande feat. Doja Cat - Motive

UK chart run: 16-x [1 weeks]
Points: +57 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00

Ariana was lucky enough to get two entries on this list with 'Motive' being briefly her 3rd biggest track upon the album's release before 'POV' took over - the latter is also the higher track in this rundown.

#29. Sam Smith & Demi Lovato - I'm Ready

UK chart run: 20-32-34-33-40-47-57-58-67-x [9 weeks]
Points: +61 | Positive votes: 12 | Negative votes: 01

Sam Smith meanwhile was unlucky enough to have as many as 3 entries in the list without having a top 10 in the year. The lowest of their tracks this year is in 'I'm Ready' which was let down by the unfortunate decision to have Demi Lovato guest on the record.

#28. Travis Scott & Kid Cudi pts. The Scotts - The Scotts

UK chart run: 11-20-23-26-38-43-48-50-57-x [9 weeks]
Points: +65 | Positive votes: 09 | Negative votes: 00

Travis Scott & Kid Cudi got together for a new project they unveiled on Fortnite simply called The Scotts named after Travis' stage name and Kid Cudi's real name. Although it hasn't been much of a project so far given they've still only this one song from it. The self titled track managed to go all the way to #1 in America through slightly less than legitimate means meanwhile just falling short of a top 10 here.

#27. Young T & Bugsey feat. Headie One - Don't Rush

UK chart run: 28-27-29-37-30-37-59-20-31-32-31-35-34-73-x-71-41-35-32-27-32-31-30-19-20-21-25-26-27-36-74-x [30 weeks]
Points: +79 | Positive votes: 09 | Negative votes: 00

'Don't Rush' ended up being a big sleeper hit for Young T & Bugsey unexpectedly getting a second revival during the year thanks to TikTok to get a new peak, although it'd have been here regardless from its #20 peak from January. It ended up becoming their most streamed hit in part thanks to some minor American success (a big deal for British rappers) and a DaBaby remix.

#26. Dermot Kennedy - Giants

UK chart run: 59-72-72-x-75-66-65-63-53-52-22-18-18-16-16-17-12-16-19-16-22-28-x-75-x [22 weeks]
Points: +80 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00

Dermot didn't manage to directly follow up big hit 'Outnumbered' with another of a similar size but later in the year we got 'Giants' becoming a sleeper hit as well as making it to #1 in his home country of Ireland. He's now back in the top 10 alongside Meduza on 'Paradise' which means I was right to leave it out of the voting thread (yay).

Posted by: JulianT 18th January 2021, 04:52 PM

For the night is the first of my choices to appear and I knew it would probably be the least popular, but good to see it mid table anyway. It's a pretty sophisticated and unusual track for its genre.

I guess the top 30 is pretty much hip-hop free then.

Posted by: JosephStyles 18th January 2021, 04:56 PM

Don't Rush is a bop, easily one of the best rap hits of the past ~year!

Posted by: danuary 18th January 2021, 05:01 PM

#25. Sam Smith - To Die For

UK chart run: 20-25-23-19-18-24-30-42-49-x [9 weeks]
Points: +83 | Positive votes: 10 | Negative votes: 00

Sam Smith is here again with 'To Die For', originally what was going to be the title track of their album until they had to change it due to the coronavirus which also led to the track getting dropped from radio and streaming playlists. A bit of unfortunate timing there but at least 'Diamonds' would become a bigger hit later in the year (which we'll be seeing in the top 20).

#24. Jübel feat. Neimy - Dancing in the Moonlight

UK chart run: 53-27-26-22-21-16-12-11-12-18-19-47-41-54-72-x [15 weeks]
Points: +85 | Positive votes: 14 | Negative votes: 01

Covering one of the biggest catalogue sellers of the moment in Toploader's 'Dancing in the Moonlight' (not the original, I know) Jübel managed to capitalise on some TikTok traction with their dance version originally released in 2018 and becoming one of the big dance smashes of the summer. Of course this led to it getting more than its fair share of disdain on Buzzjack but clearly a lot of supporters for it too.

#23. Idina Menzel & Aurora - Into the Unknown

UK chart run: 36-36-38-44-62-19-37-42-54-x-55-62-68-x [12 weeks]
Points: +87 | Positive votes: 10 | Negative votes: 00

Frozen 2 finally came out in late 2019 which brought along with it this track clearly meant to serve as the big hit from the soundtrack, although thankfully it never got half as big as 'Let It Go' but still briefly managing a top 20 peak before the new year set in.

#22. Blackpink - How You Like That

UK chart run: 20-44-57-x [3 weeks]
Points: +87 | Positive votes: 15 | Negative votes: 00

2020 also saw Blackpink grow bigger further cementing themselves as the world's biggest girl group, although they're still yet to get a lasting UK hit (Dua Lipa feature aside) they did manage two top 20s on the strength of the fanbase. First off was this track which commenced their latest era culminating in their debut album.

#21. Conan Gray - Heather

UK chart run: 41-22-23-17-20-23-23-23-26-27-32-x [11 weeks]
Points: +88 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00

Another TikTok boosted song now, although Conan Gray was gaining some traction already he wasn't to get a proper chart hit until 'Heather' took off on the platform eventually going in the top 20. It's yet to be seen if he can follow it up but the song is still comfortably in the Spotify top 100.

You'd be right, there's absolutely no hip-hop in the top 25* - with 'Don't Rush' and 'The Scotts' being the sole representees in the top 30.

*unless you count Trevor Daniel 'Falling', that one is arguable but I wouldn't consider it hip-hop (Wiki does, however)

BLACKPINK deserved higher over the absolute borefest that is Heather!

Posted by: Dobbo. 18th January 2021, 06:22 PM

This City & Heather gone means all the absolute worst stains have now departed.

Thought BlackPink would be higher there. Love that one, easily their best. The Sam Smith songs are the wrong way round also.

Posted by: Bré 18th January 2021, 06:25 PM

BuzzJack's ongoing phobia of anything resembling rap clap.gif yeah sure 'Heather' and 'Dancing In The Moonlight' are definitely better than that entire genre...

The Trevor Daniel song is basically a Juice WRLD clone so I guess it's fair to call it hip-hop but it obviously isn't a rap song (melodic rap at a big stretch). 'Don't Rush' as the highest actual rap song is a good outcome, a bop. Decent enough showings for 'THE SCOTTS' and 'Darkness' too (the latter took a few listens to grow on me but is one of only 2 songs that have really been worth keeping from Eminem's latest era, a distant second to 'Godzilla' which is really in another league compared to all of his other recent output).

Kind of surprised that 'Wishing Well' has done better than 'Life's A Mess' here (didn't expect many would vote for either of them) - 'Wishing Well' grew on me a bit and I guess I can see why it is a fan fave but it's one of my personal least favourites on his album, even before considering that it just has to be a Dr. Luke production.

Rooting mostly for Taylor and The Weeknd to clean up out of the remaining songs.

Posted by: Jade 18th January 2021, 06:31 PM

'THE SCOTTS', 'How You Like That' and 'motive' are my favourites to drop out so far!

Rooting for any of these to win:

Ariana Grande - POV
Ava Max - Kings & Queens
Harry Styles - Falling
Kelly Clarkson - Underneath the Tree
Lady Gaga & Blackpink - Sour Candy
Sam Smith - Diamonds
Shawn Mendes - Wonder
Taylor Swift - Champagne Problems
Taylor Swift feat. Haim - No Body, No Crime
The Weeknd - After Hours
The Weeknd - In Your Eyes
Trevor Daniel - Falling

Posted by: Dobbo. 19th January 2021, 10:40 AM

In Your Eyes is absolutely gonna walk this. Think it must have got 10+ sets of 18's!

#20. Taylor Swift - Champagne Problems

UK chart run: 15-x-42-48-... [3+ weeks]
Points: +104 | Positive votes: 13 | Negative votes: 00

Two of Taylor Swift's album tracks appear here and they're both in the top 20. We start off with Champagne Problems, a song I've not yet heard but I presume it isn't about alcoholism nor having problems with opening a champagne bottle without it spilling.

#19. Shawn Mendes - Wonder

UK chart run: 21-27-23-28-25-20-21-25-45-48-63-x [11 weeks]
Points: +105 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00

Shawn Mendes made a new album this year with its title track just about making the top 20, perhaps a bit less than people were expecting chart wise seeing as he'd just come off the back of a huge #1. He'd get a top 10 soon enough afterwards with help from Justin Bieber however.

#18. Ariana Grande - POV

UK chart run: 22-19-21-x-52-61-... [5+ weeks]
Points: +108 | Positive votes: 14 | Negative votes: 01

The better received Ariana Grande album track now which was helped by it gaining a bit of TikTok traction although ultimately overshadowed by '34+35' when that received its music video. There is always the chance of this being the 'Watermelon Sugar' of the year if it gets a belated single push but until then it just makes the lower half of the top 20 here.

#17. PS1 feat. Alex Hosking - Fake Friends

UK chart run: 65-52-51-44-48-40-31-34-28-22-25-26-27-19-23-51-59-x [17 weeks]
Points: +114 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00

One of the year's breakthrough dance hits and my personal favourite of the list naturally. It got New York DJ PS1 his first hit with this great commercial house track. Just about making the top 20 late in its chart run before getting rudely booted onto ACR two weeks later.

#16. Camila Cabello feat. DaBaby - My Oh My

UK chart run: 69-50-49-13-21-20-23-23-20-17-19-16-18-21-55-60-70-x [17 weeks]
Points: +125 | Positive votes: 21 | Negative votes: 00

Camila Cabello didn't have the best of starts to her 'Romance' era but thanks to rent-a-rapper of the moment DaBaby popping up on the track she managed to eventually get a proper hit in 'My Oh My', leaping up to #13 at the start of the year but never quite managing to get any higher.

Good section there. Wonder was a big late bloomer for me & Fake Friends was a dance highlight.

#15. Trevor Daniel - Falling

UK chart run: 46-40-35-26-45-14-23-25-24-26-22-18-22-28-64-72-x [16 weeks]
Points: +140 | Positive votes: 18 | Negative votes: 00

Post Malone wannabe Trevor Daniel managed an early year hit getting a TikTok boost for 'Falling', now making its way to its billionth Spotify stream although he's yet to show any signs of following it with a second hit.

#14. The 1975 - If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know)

UK chart run: 14-37-42-52-33-53-53-60-61-x [9 weeks]
Points: +152 | Positive votes: 14 | Negative votes: 00

The 1975 continued to chuck out singles throughout the year eventually culminating in them denying KSI of a number one album. It was only this one track that showed any sort of longevity however thanks to its pop hook and 80s vibe, and even got them their highest chart peak to date having been much anticipated by the fanbase.

#13. Little Mix - Holiday

UK chart run: 17-30-19-17-21-18-15-19-20-47-58-64-x-36-53-x [14 weeks]
Points: +152 | Positive votes: 15 | Negative votes: 00

Little Mix kept on going throughout the year despite some label issues previous, eventually getting another #1 hit although this wasn't to be it instead settling for being a middling hit. It's not by any means a highlight of their output which likely explains its absence from the top 10 in this rundown despite the big fanbase on the forum.

#12. Lady Gaga & Blackpink - Sour Candy

UK chart run: 17-34-55-71-x [4 weeks]
Points: +163 | Positive votes: 21 | Negative votes: 00

Lady Gaga also misses out on a top 10 spot again this time with the promo single 'Sour Candy' that was also given a big initial chart boost from the power of Blackpink fans. A proper single push for this was rumoured but still is yet to happen if it ever will, not that I'd expect it to out-peak itself with a music video anyhow.

#11. Benee feat. Gus Dapperton - Supalonely

UK chart run: 39-22-21-23-18-19-26-29-25-50-57-65-68-74-x [14 weeks]
Points: +166 | Positive votes: 21 | Negative votes: 00

And just falling short of the top 10 although still with a better position than she got officially we have Benee who became a rare New Zealand export to the official chart after the song was picked up by TikTok. Thanks in part to some good timing by her to release a song about loneliness right before the first lockdowns of the world.

The Weeknd - In Your Eyes

Congrats to the above songs which are now honorary Top 10 hits, and in particularly a big WD to Becky Hill and The Weeknd who have two entries each. The top 10 will be revealed later today so until then let's have some Predictions.

Posted by: Dobbo. 19th January 2021, 11:05 AM

I don't even recall how Falling goes so surprised that's so high.

Pretty meh section there in all.

Ah forgot about the other Falling, what a terrible record. Get rud of that & Halsey and I like the rest of the top 10.

Top 3 to be In Your Eyes, Kings & Queens and one of the Becky Hill tracks p'raps?

Posted by: Mangø 19th January 2021, 11:09 AM

Very surprised that 'Holiday' isn't Top 10!

Posted by: JulianT 19th January 2021, 11:31 AM

Maybe The Weeknd could do the double and win both this and the favourite No 1? I think In Your Eyes will place higher than After Hours.

Posted by: Dircadirca 19th January 2021, 12:58 PM

After Hours in the top 10 is a nice surprise. Easily my favourite here but didn't know there was much fanfare for it.

Posted by: coi 19th January 2021, 01:04 PM

Wow at Falling making it into the top 15, and even more wow at After Hours being in the top ten! wub.gif Definitely better than I was expecting but it's my favourite from the list too.

Posted by: Jade 19th January 2021, 01:16 PM

'After Hours' also my favourite from the list, well done BuzzJack clap.gif

Not that keen on the Becky Hill or Halsey songs but would be happy with anything else winning!

Posted by: Bré 19th January 2021, 06:05 PM

Trevor Daniel did have a second (minor) hit in the US with 'Past Life' magic.gif I still really like 'Falling', it's been kind of amusing to see how much hate it gets from the YouTube music review community lol ~ glad that it is a bit more popular on here. x

Surprised at 'Sour Candy' being this low but not complaining teresa.gif

#10. Becky Hill & Sigala - Heaven On My Mind

UK chart run: 38-40-31-23-23-17-14-16-20-21-46-44-52-56-75-75-x [22 weeks]
Points: +174 | Positive votes: 22 | Negative votes: 00

Becky Hill managed two hits as a lead performer both of which managed to make it to #14, and now become honorary top 10 hits! The second of these is the first to fall in the top 10, still getting a respectable position. I wasn't expecting this to go so high particularly with 'Better Off' also in contention. It also gave Sigala a much needed hit after 'We Got Love' unjustly missed the top 40, before 'Lasting Lover' got him back in the top 10.

#09. Harry Styles - Falling

UK chart run: 39-x-41-29-22-24-20-20-20-16-15-16-18-19-19-21-59-65-59-71-73-70-x [21 weeks]
Points: +175 | Positive votes: 21 | Negative votes: 00

Harry Styles managed to get a good few post-album hits which isn't so easy to do these days. Starting off with this piano ballad suited to the winter season it had quite a lot of top 20 longevity but only just about made the top 15. It now becomes an honorary top 10 hit to join three other singles off the album. I won't pretend to be a fan but it was easily better than what the other ex-1D members are currently up to.

#08. Becky Hill feat. Shift K3Y - Better Off Without You

UK chart run: 63-42-36-24-25-23-16-16-14-15-17-43-40-50-51-61-66-66-69-64-75-x [21 weeks]
Points: +194 | Positive votes: 23 | Negative votes: 00

As it turns out we have ourselves a Harry Styles sandwich as Becky Hill's other hit of the year appears with just 20 points more than 'Heaven'. This was easily the better of the two for me so I'm glad it managed to get higher as I expected. The song also saw the unexpected chart return of Shift K3Y who had a couple of hits a few years ago, albeit without any vocal input from him this time.

#07. Halsey - You Should Be Sad

UK chart run: 37-26-24-17-12-15-13-12-12-12-16-45-49-48-58-62-69-x [17 weeks]
Points: +195 | Positive votes: 25 | Negative votes: 00

Halsey had one of the unluckiest runs of the year spending 4 weeks at #12, although that was still enough for it to become her 2nd-biggest hit as a lead (and sole) performer. It now gives her an honorary 4th top 10 hit.

#06. Kelly Clarkson - Underneath the Tree

UK chart run: 46-30-55-x-74-66-x-49-47-32-x-69-55-37-x-49-39-33-21-x-46-20-16-20-15-17-x [21 weeks]
Points: +210 | Positive votes: 26 | Negative votes: 00

Kelly Clarkson had been growing in popularity with her Christmas effort over the years and in 2020 finally managed to crack the top 20, where it remained for the entirety of December! Perhaps it could break the official top 10 in future years, but until then it's just an honorary top 10 hit. It certainly feels like this is already one of the big Christmas classics of the modern age and it is well deserved for her.

#05. Taylor Swift feat. Haim - No Body, No Crime

UK chart run: 19-x-54-68-... [3+ weeks]
Points: +228 | Positive votes: 26 | Negative votes: 00

The lesser of the two Taylor Swift album tracks in terms of chart popularity turns out to be much better received here, with it unexpectedly ending up right in the top five! Perhaps it is the Haim feature helping it out a bit as I know they have a bit of a base on Buzzjack too, although from what I gather (having not heard it yet) they don't exactly have a huge role in the song. Well done to the forum's Swifties, I guess.

#04. Sam Smith - Diamonds

UK chart run: 22-24-26-23-20-17-11-11-14-17-63-x-49-58-... [13+ weeks]
Points: +235 | Positive votes: 21 | Negative votes: 00

Far outperforming the other two songs on the list is Sam Smith's 'Diamonds' which was also a bigger hit officially, being unlucky to stall at #11 even with the album release effect. I wasn't a huge fan of the song but it was nice to hear something a bit more upbeat from them again, no surprise really that it's been one of Sam's better received singles on here.

#03. The Weeknd - After Hours

UK chart run: 20-30-43-43-23-41-59-x [7 weeks]
Points: +242 | Positive votes: 21 | Negative votes: 00

Here's another surprise as The Weeknd actually has both of his tracks make the top 3, this including the title track of his Grammy snubbed album 'After Hours' which was only issued as a promotional single. Despite being fairly lengthy and a little less commercial for him it clearly made a big impact here attracting a lot of high points.

#02. Ava Max - Kings & Queens

UK chart run: 71-45-41-42-39-33-29-25-30-27-31-26-21-19-22-21-24-28-24-20-21-27-31-61-64-57-66-x [27 weeks]
Points: +255 | Positive votes: 26 | Negative votes: 00

Ava Max for the second time appears in the top 3 of this contest, but a win still evades her. 'Kings & Queens' still places in a respectable 2nd however having given her a third hit single that some thought may never have come after a string of songs failed to take off. It only made the very low end of the top 20 but had a rather lengthy chart run to make up for it.

#01. The Weeknd - In Your Eyes

UK chart run: 17-24-25-29-34-37-39-38-39-29-38-33-41-x [13 weeks]
Points: +378 | Positive votes: 30 | Negative votes: 00

The winner was never in contention however as The Weeknd beats Ava Max by 123 points, which surely has to be the biggest lead and most points ever in this poll. The Weeknd was a Buzzjack darling this year with 'Blinding Lights' and this getting masses of love on the forum. The track always lit up the chart forum thread whenever it received a play. As obvious a winner it may be, it is a very deserving one too being a great pop song. It also gets bonus points from me at least for putting the sax solo back in the chart. So it is a big WD to Abel who is the tenth winner of this poll. The song is also only the 3rd all-male track to win, following 'High Hopes' and 'Do I Wanna Know?'.

Before we recap let's take a look at the updated Hall of Fame.

In Your Eyes is absolutely gonna walk this. Think it must have got 10+ sets of 18's!
You were right, it had 11.
Interestingly, Kings & Queens (2nd placed) got none, and After Hours (3rd placed) got five.

Thanks for hosting this! In Your Eyes is a very fine winner leading a strong Top 20 - a beautiful ballad that manages to be uplifting even while having heartbreaking lyrics.

'After Hours' top 3 - wow!! ohmy.gif I voted for that entire top 5, a good mixture clap.gif thanks for this Dan happy.gif

Posted by: Jason 20th January 2021, 01:23 AM

Everyone knew In Your Eyes would win this easily. Unpopular opinion but I'm not a fan of The Weeknd's songs.
I thought Becky's Better Off Without You would end up top 5 but I was wrong.

Posted by: Bré 20th January 2021, 01:39 AM

So close to an all-The Weeknd top 2! 'In Your Eyes' is a worthy winner of course, quite far from being my favourite song on his album (in fact I'd say it's comfortably my least favourite of the songs that have charted from it) but I still like it a lot, that just says something about how packed the album is with great tunes. And 3rd place is a pretty great result for the song 'After Hours' really considering it was only a minor hit and not exactly the most 'accessible' song on the list!

'Kings & Queens' and 'Diamonds' both fell short of my votes but wouldn't have been too far outside, and 'no body, no crime' made it into my votes (I originally found it to be one of the weaker songs on 'evermore' but it's clicked much more with more listens) so that's a pretty great top 5 all in all.

So 41% of the voters gave their +18 to one of The Weeknd's songs? cheeseblock.png what kind of dominance.

Never in doubt, don't think I've ever been so in tune with the general consensus on here about any song before! My fave song of 2020 not just hit.

Very impressive for The Weeknd to get 2 songs in the top 3. Also glad no body no crime finished top 5, that's one of the best songs Taylor has ever released.

I forgot to vote in this but it would have been a Weeknd top 2 from me so I can only approve of the results happy.gif

Amazed that After Hours finished in the top 3 but very pleased! In Your Eyes is such a deserving winner too, great results.

Just caught up with this finally! Well done Abel! wub.gif I'm over the moon he has become a Buzzjack darling. Both his songs in this competition are stellar. Ava being number 2 though... tearsmile.gif I would have put Taylor, Harry or Kelly there instead. kink.gif

Finally, if you would like to see the series continue retrospectively in the 00s forum (going from 2000-2010), then make your interest known. Otherwise, we'll be back next year!

Yaaaaaaas! That's a great idea. Please do it. cheer.gif
