Hey guys! I’m really excited to bring to you the Genre Forum Song Contest, something that was inspired by the recent Artist Forum Song Contest

So, basically the moderators are going to host nominations rounds followed by finals in their forums, not dissimilar to what went on in the artist forums, except you all won’t simply be voting for one song to fit one theme. Not only will the genre forums be involved but also Eurovision so the diversity scale will be very high! Each forum must come up with four songs that they feel represent them and showcase the best music their forum has to offer. The theme is 'Signature Sounds', so think about what will really represent the artists in mind and your genre. The idea of this is to generate more traffic to the genre forums and maybe get those that don’t go in certain forums to do so and broaden their taste a little! It will also encourage a little bit of healthy competition between the forums and get you discovering some more music. If your genre forum takes in a few categories like Indie, Rock and Alternative does, you might want to have a song that represents each part of that but it’s up to you guys.

In terms of how to host your nominations and finals, I suggest putting up a thread for nominations where people can post up to five songs that they want to see and then the mods compile a shortlist from the ones with multiple nominations which will give you the songs posters can vote for maybe either by doing a ranking or voting with the ESC 12 point system but It’s up to you how you want to do your finals, just as long as you come out with four songs in the end. I’d run each for a week too. It would be good if we could get everything running at once so we can move onto the main event asap!

I will request to get a copy of your shortlist from the mods before they put up their finals threads and any song that doesn't fit can be binned at that point to ensure no last minute vetoes etc and I’ll get a second opinion from Iz to make sure I’m not being unfair. There aren't too many rules, just don't go with anything that's been a UK Top 40 hit or that's finished top ten in Eurovision or is by an artist with their own forum. Each song will be judged on a case by case basis to make sure nothing too cheap slips through and everything is above board and in spirit with the contest's theme

For now, genre mods, feel free to put up your nominations rounds! The sooner you get them up the better tbh, just don't run them longer than a week. Could you guys also link to this topic in your forum threads so that people can come here to get more information plssss Yea the contest is taking place across a large chunk of the site but this is the sorta base for it so everyone should be directed here when possible

I've one slight query. Do you have an idea for dates for this? I'm just wondering about Unknown Pleasures, I was planning to put the confirmations thread up on the 5th of November as that's when I get more free time for these things, but there'll be BJSC and the Pop Forum Song Contest which I saw opening, and potentially this at the same time, and I wouldn't want people to have to listen and vote in four song contests at the same time so if I need to delay UP, could you let me know? Or if there won't be a huge clash, then I'll just go with what I had planned.

Iz said this would be the perfect time to host this really since the AFSC has just finished and it's not like this is subject to the one forum, I don't have solid dates at the moment for when each voting stage is up as that will be dependent on when the genre forum mods put up their nominations threads but it shouldn't clash with UP as it will be running longer, hopefully we can get all the nominations threads up over the next few days, run them for a week and then after that it will be more voting from the shortlist for another week, still in the individual genre forums, over those couple of weeks there's not going to be much listening happening as you're nominating/voting for songs you already know and that's when UP will be running if i'm correct? In terms of when the main voting thread will be up in this forum, I'd imagine the following week so we still have like three weeks essentially, you said ages ago that you'd be starting UP on the 5th so I will change dates if I need to to accommodate that, don't worry.

I wouldn't worry too much about UP with this. I'm kinda making a distinction between poster-oriented song contests - which is what UP/Nuggets/BJSC/Pop Forum stuff are, and forum-oriented ones, which would be AFSC and this. Potentially the forum ones will end up having a wider range of voters and the emphasis is on getting those who can vote to vote. Plus, not all the songs will be new to everyone here, just like not all of them were new in AFSC.

I said 'perfect time to run it' in reference to well, the AFSC has just finished and I believe it's a month or two before they have their second edition.

I'm very excited to see how this plays out, there could be a lot of strategy involved in each forum selecting their entries.

I've noticed a little bit of confusion regarding the structure of the contest so I've tried to simplify it as much as I can, I'm not the best at explaining things so have a visual rep



SO, we go from Base Camp (this thread) into the individual genre forums to nominate. You can nominate up to 5 songs, you can vote in as many forums as you like.

Then, in a weeks time (07/11) we will close nominations and I should get shortlists from the moderators of each forum. I understand some will be longer than others as it's really only going to be those with multiple nominations that make the cut. This is the point where myself and Iz will discuss the songs to see if any need to be vetoed. The following day (hopefully), all the genre mods will put up their finals, posters will vote from the shortlist in whichever way the mods choose for the four that are going to represent their forum in the grand final. This will also last a week, so providing all mods can get their threads up asap, that should run 08/11 until 15/11.

I will then receive 4 songs from each forum, giving a total of 20 songs that will compete against each other in the final. The standard 12 point system will be used, that will run for a week (16/11 until 23/11) and the results should follow the next day.

These dates are only provisional and could be subject to change.
