BuzzJack Music Forum _ Movies and Theatre _ What film genres have you never been interested in?

Has there any sort of film genre that you have never been interested in seeing and why.....

Mine would be costume/period type of films.

Posted by: Mack. 27th February 2018, 12:58 PM

I've never been interested in westerns they send me to sleep.

Posted by: danG 27th February 2018, 01:04 PM

Period dramas
Westerns
Romance
War films

and that's not accounting for obscure/experimental type genres

Posted by: Leonardo 27th February 2018, 01:21 PM

Obviously there are exceptions to every rule but these generally do nothing for me;

Westerns
War
Gore

Westerns
Chick Flicks (apart from one film that I stumbled upon on TV once, "10 Things I Hate About You")
War
LGBT (No offence to anyone here, it just doesn't appeal to me)
Political

Period dramas would be my main one - TV/Film or anything - yes the production to reproduce that time is impressive but it's just the language and the culture they usually replicate (for British period dramas anyway) just bog down the whole thing when the same theme/story they explore could be told much better in a more relevant time frame. I'll be happy if someone can name something that might disprove that theory of mine.

Also having been reminded in here, I don't think I've ever watched a Western film ohmy.gif they sound appealing but considering the number of naysayers we have I'm not so sure anymore!

Also anything deliberately designed to shock either through political content or gore is a big no for me. Human Centipede never in a million years - just cause it's an original idea doesn't mean it should be produced!

With the odd exception,

Rom Com,
Musical,
Comedy,

A comedy ohmy.gif no laughing for you or just a different sense of humour to the mainstream comedy films?

Westerns 100%

I can't think of a single western that I like/would watch again. They're all so bland to me.

Edit. Oh wait. 'Django Unchained' is the only one I do like

Oh that too. The South Park parody of Human Centipede was more than enough, and that's probably tame compared to the actual film(s). mellow.gif

The one genre I absolutely cannot abide is superhero films.

Posted by: NocheLuna 27th February 2018, 08:39 PM

Western, never left any impression on my whatsoever

Posted by: Chez Wombat 27th February 2018, 09:08 PM

Oh dear, some of the greatest films of all time are Westerns! ohmy.gif (Admittedly, I've not watched an awful lot either kink.gif Maybe it's a British thing idk)

I don't often watch exploitation (like The Human Centipede as mentioned) and romance would probably be my least favourite mainstream genre - probably cos when I watch a film I look for either something spectacular and thrilling or an original idea that makes me think and romance just never really gives me this plus I'm still a bitter singleton, there are exceptions - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my all time favourites.

I wouldn't dismiss a genre altogether though - everything has something worthwhile to give to cinema!

Different sense of humour generally I guess. I love some big Comedy films like Ghostbusters or Beetlejuice but most of it leaves me cold.

As for those that aren't keen on Westerns, I get it, most of them (like War movies) are pulp rubbish but I'd say check out Unforgiven, the Spaghetti Westerns with Clint Eastwood, Once Upon A Time In The West, Shane, Cheyenne Autumn and Dances With Wolves. There's many more that are worthwhile but there's some brilliant films in the genre and I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand

This may be a bit controversial because Buzzjack seems to like 'em but I'm not a fan of horror films in general! I seem to get no enjoyment whatsoever through a film trying to scare me and instead prefer to turn to film as a positive form of escapism most of the time, probably explains why I like musicals a lot.

Posted by: Jüpiter 28th February 2018, 01:19 AM

Generally westerns is about it. I'm sure some are decent but they're generally so slow for my attention span, and traditional too.

I guess going into subgenres, I can't watch torture porn stuff like Saw or Hostel. Overactive imagination and squeamishness doesn't mix well with that kind of thing.

I’ve never been interested in period dramas

Posted by: Joe. 28th February 2018, 11:15 AM

I feel like most of the classic Westerns have aged badly in comparison to other classics from the same era, due to their overly macho and often sexist natures. There's some brilliant modern westerns out there like True Grit, Django Unchained, Wind River etc.

IT (2017) is the only horror film I’ve ever enjoyed tbh, all those corny Jason/Freddie Kruger/Michael Myers type movies are just awful to watch. Saw, I only just watched part of last year and hated every second of it. The most horror-y type movies I can stand are monster horror movies, which are mostly thrillers (with a bit of blood and death) anyway. Also can’t stand those Chucky or Annabelle type shitshows

When I was younger I used to sneak down the stairs and watch what my parents were watching on TV at night: one night I did so and saw my dad watching the most grotesque movie which starts with a group of home invaders knocking on a door with bats etc and a Mum answers it, they tie her & the daughter (age about 5 I think) up and beat them, before killing them both right in front of the Dad who was also tied up. Truly disturbing and I think has actually put me off true horror movies for life, they’re often just so uneccessarily violent that it’s horrible to watch through.

Posted by: Mack. 28th February 2018, 01:17 PM

Political type films as well. Just never got into them at all.

Posted by: Regina 28th February 2018, 04:31 PM

There's no one genre I won't watch tbh, there is at least one or two of any one I like.
Westerns used to bore me, but Jane Got A Gun saved the genre.

Posted by: Shia LeMuffQueef 28th February 2018, 05:23 PM

Urgh, superhero TRASH

They are largely utterly awful

Only Spiderman is any good

Also, I second political/ horror movies (although in real life politics and horror are one and the same these days)

Posted by: indielife 1st March 2018, 01:13 PM

I would say the documentary genre of film. I just can't keep myself still when watching them, need to stand up and go out right away.

Posted by: Mack. 2nd March 2018, 08:43 PM

Best to say I wouldn't be rushing to see a Downton Abbey film if that was made.

Posted by: Tombo 10th March 2018, 06:54 PM

I hate country and westerns, crime/murder type films, war films and also old films, particularly black and white, also anything that is subbed

I'm quite egocentric with my film taste which basically means that I have to be able to relate to the film. So I err towards character-focused dramas set in a world that's not too far from the one I know, generally with plenty of dialogue.

Having said that, there's loads of sci-fi and historical films that I love. Visually-focused, 'style over substance' films which deliberately avoid any social realism whatsoever can also be great. The Neon Demon is a recent highlight.

I feel like I'm not answering the question but I'm just trying to explain why I love Boyhood but hate Transformers. And can't get into the Coen Brothers or Wes Anderson.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 7th April 2018, 02:02 PM

Costume dramas don't really appeal to me.

I'm also not keen on Westerns, although one of my favourite ever films is Blazing Saddles, and I did enjoy Unforgiven & Django Unchained. Although those three films all subverted the Western genre in different ways.

I'd also add war films into that as well, can only think of one or two that I actively enjoyed, like Hacksaw Ridge.

Posted by: Mack. 17th May 2018, 11:20 AM

Some war films can be quite dull to be honest.
