BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Ultimate 90s Number Ones Rate

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:17 AM

You have been voting for your favourite 90s Number One single over the past few weeks, but here is what you've waited for, what is your favourite number one single. In the event of a tie, it will go down to individual points scored in the round that it was in. This morning we'll start with 50 - 41

50 - The Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" (1991) (+2)

So, the song with the least points is this rock song by The Clash, and their only number one.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:20 AM

49 - D:Ream "Things Can Only Get Better" (1994) (+5)

Almost losing is this, a song which isn't remembered well and one that I don't know how it got here in the final. Their follow up "U R The Best Thing" went to number 4, but both these songs were re-releases.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:23 AM

48 - Snap! "The Power" (1990) (+6)

This is the first song of Snap!'s in the countdown. Their other number one is in the higher end of the countdown which is yet to come. This was also the first number one Snap! got, and was their first single.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:26 AM

47 - Beats International "Dub Be Good To Me" (1990) (+10)

The only number one, let alone top five hit for Beats International lands here with people forgetting about it in the final. Maybe Pro Green has something to do with why this has done so badly

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:29 AM

46 - Adamski feat. Seal "Killer" (1990) (+12)

1990 hasn't been a great year for Buzzjack. Three out of five entries from 90' have already gone, this being the third. Adamski has also not done great since this single, the follow up peaking at 7

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:31 AM

45 - Run DMC vs Jason Nevins "It's Like That" (1998) (+13)

The lowest scoring song from the later half of the decade goes to this which spent 6 weeks at number one and sold one million.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:33 AM

44 - 2 Unlimited "No Limit" (1993) (+14)

We come to our first tie, between two songs but this has lost out. It seemed to do very badly until someone gave it a +12 to save it. The song was on minus points at one point of the round

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:36 AM

43 - Michael Jackson "Black Or White" (1991) (+14)

This classic from the King of Pop really should have peaked higher, am disappointed with this. It has a great video too. Maybe he'll do better in the 80s round where he has "Billie Jean" - that's if we're doing an 80s next.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:38 AM

42 - East 17 "Stay Another Day" (1994) (+16)

This song is famous for beating Mariah Carey to the Christmas number one, we all know which one has passed the test of time. How this got more points than MJ I don't know!!! - alright I'll shut up about him now

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 05:42 AM

41 - Tasmin Archer "Sleeping Satelllite" (1992) (+18)

This is the last song I'll be revealing this morning. Feel free to predict what'll come up soon and who will be that all important number one. The song is boring and gets nowhere for me - 1992 was not a good year for number ones bar Snap!, and Tasmin's follow up peaked at 16 so this song is more or less a one hit wonder

Er... both of them? SAD went as high as #97 in the Xmas chart of 2009.

I would have thought this was remembered very well indeed. It's use by "New Labour" in their winning election campaign gave it a new meaning (no opinion here whether that was good or bad!)

50 - The Clash "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
Poor Clash. Only 2 votes! I wanted to vote them but it was so f***ing hard!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 30th March 2011, 11:08 AM

As if 'It's Like That' is so low!

Posted by: Andrew* 30th March 2011, 11:25 AM

HI can you add some information about the voters as well? How many -2's they received, who they got maximum points from ET CETERA?
Oh and let's do 90's #2's next, #2's hardly get any attention and there's an array of gems among them. Considering the average age of the kids on this site, 80s may not attract THAT many voters?

Forgot how good this is.

Posted by: chart wizard 30th March 2011, 01:19 PM

OK results so far, none of my true favourites, I don't think I've ever heard Sleeping Satellite or Things Can Only Get Better before

and I'd say East 17 has stood the test of time well as well, both are Christmas classics, Mariah more so

Posted by: John_Squire 30th March 2011, 02:43 PM

Surprised how low Beats International is! Either I was the only voter or it got a LOT of minuses.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 06:46 PM

Continuing on...

40 - Whigfield "Saturday Night" (1994) (+19)

The 90s equivalent to Rebecca Black "Friday" lands in at 40. The follow up "Another Day" peaked at 7.

Do not TAINT Saturday Night with that comparison. mellow.gif

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 06:52 PM

39 - The Spice Girls "Mama/Who Do You Think You Are" (1997) (+20)

The fourth number one out of nine for the Spice Girls is a double A-Side, but "Who Do You Think You Are" is remembered more as it is a great pop-house crossover classic! The Girls' "Viva Forever" and "2 Become 1" are yet to chart

Posted by: chart wizard 30th March 2011, 06:52 PM

how dare you even compare Whigfield with that crap! pirate.gif tongue.gif

Saturday Night was a great if cheesy dance pop song and she had a very good voice

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 06:53 PM

Lyrically "Friday" and "Saturday Night" are similar (apart from "gotta have my bowl gotta have cereal" "which seat should i take" and "yesterday was thursday etc." - but yes in terms of voice:

Whigfield >>>> (x100) >>>>>>> (x100) >>>>>> Rebecca Black

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 06:57 PM

38 - The Shamen "Ebeneezer Goode" (1992) (+20)

Yes it tied with the Spice Girls but this had more individual points. The 'men had a good career with 5 top 10 singles, this being their third

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:07 PM

37 - The Fugees "Killing Me Softly" (1996) (+29)

The first of four top 3 hits and 2 number ones is this. The song did a SLY-type run, just without the big jump as it debuted at the top. It spent 4 weeks at number one, dropped to 2, spent another week at 1 and another 3 weeks at 2.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:15 PM

36 - Ace of Base "All That She Wants" (1993) (+31)

The debut single by Ace of Base is at 36, they seemed like a one-hit wonder after this with two flop singles until they released "The Sign" about nine months after ATSW and peaked at 2

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 30th March 2011, 07:20 PM

'Killing Me Softly' so low, a shame it's not higher. It's a brilliant song.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:25 PM

35 - Culture Beat "Mr. Vain" (1993) (+32)

The "Rhythym is a Dancer" soundalike managed to make its way to number one for four weeks and onto here. It's not that bad actually - but the original is the best - Snap! is still to come.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:29 PM

34 - Babylon Zoo "Spaceman" (1996) (+33)

A one hit wonder from Babylon Zoo here and the fifth wildcard to chart as yet. The follow up peaked at 17

Isn't it just. laugh.gif

Fair enough, some posters will regard Whigfield as pop fluff but it's a much better song than that 'Friday' thing.

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:31 PM

33 - Englandneworder "World in Motion" (1990) (+36)

The only football song in the top 50 is this by New Order who re-named themselves for this song

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 30th March 2011, 07:31 PM

Two great songs there, fantastic that a song like 'Spaceman' could be so successful...

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:34 PM

32 - Olive "Your Not Alone" (1997) (+37)

A dance group who named themselves after a fruit and an oil get themselves a number one hit. Tinchy Stryder used this as a sample for his song of the same name not so long ago.

How did this song get banned anyway from the chart?
I can't see anything wrong with this song

Posted by: danielGaGa 30th March 2011, 07:39 PM

31 - Baby D "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" (1994) (+40)

Another 90s dance song here, this time from singer Baby D who stayed at number one for 2 weeks with this song. The follow up went to 3.

++++++

That's it for tonight. Predict who will be 30-21, and who you think will take the top spot - no competition the predicting is just for fun (of course I won't predict as I know all)

Iirc, 'Ebeneezer Goode' was deleted by the record company. I haven't a clue if there was controversy surrounding the song at the time on the news.

Posted by: chart wizard 30th March 2011, 08:19 PM

Ebeneezer Goode because of the various drug references IIRC, 'salmon', 'veras', and listen to the chorus of the song tongue.gif

anyway, my three favourites (Queen, Manics and Eiffel) still to come! excellent! biggrin.gif

Yes it was deleted to make way for "Boss Drum" single which the group wanted out before they launched the album in Nov 92. As for controversy yes it was to do with drugs- they got complaints when they were on TOTP and i believe Radio 1 didn't play it during the daytime schedule (yet oddly i believe they still did on the chart countdown- which i suppose was MORE listened to by the "youff's")

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:25 AM

Continuing on... the next 3 are all on the same points but the position is decided by individual points scored in the yearly rounds

30 - The Prodigy "Breathe" (1996) (+42)

The second number one for this dance group in the UK, and their seventh top ten hit out of eleven.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:28 AM

29 - Enigma "Sadness Part 1" (1991) (+42)

Enigma's only number one and first out of two top three hits with a song that would never even go top 40 in today's charts. How times have changed!

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:31 AM

28 - Oasis "Some Might Say" (1995) (+42)

And the winner of the three way tie is brit-pop group Oasis with their first number one. Another popular song by them is still yet to chart.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:34 AM

27 - All Saints "Never Ever" (1998) (+43)

The first number one for All Saints, the song spent fifteen weeks in the top ten, something not even LTWYL can do.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:36 AM

26 - Eiffel 65 "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" (1999) (+45)

The novelty song which inspired Avatar ten years later lands at 26. They only ever had one follow up which peaked at 3.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:39 AM

25 - Meat Loaf "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" (1993) (+45)

The big comeback for Meat Loaf was a half-sucess on BJ, landing straight in the middle of the countdown.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:41 AM

24 - Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody/These Are The Days Of Our Lives" (1991) (+48)

Only on Buzzjack would the "greatest song of all time" completely miss the top 20.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:44 AM

23 - Livin' Joy "Dreamer" (1995) (+49)

Their debut single that reached number one back in September 1995. Not much else I can say for this song

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:46 AM

22 - No Doubt "Don't Speak" (1997) (+53)

Their first number one and first out of three top ten hits. The follow up was a re-release of "Just A Girl" which previously peaked at 38.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:49 AM

21 - Cornershop "Brimful of Asha" (1998) (+55)

This song was first released in late August 97 but peaked at 60. It was re-released in 98' and got Cornershop their only number one, let alone top 20 hit.

++++ That's it for this morning. Hopefully 20 - 11 will be up tonight, if not, Friday morning, and 10 - 1 on Friday night biggrin.gif

Breathe only (=) #28 sad.gif But as I said earlier I did expect it to be fairly low. Great to see No Doubt not top 20, horrible song. Firestarter beat it biggrin.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 31st March 2011, 07:18 AM

Surprised at Don't Speak and Bohemian Rhapsody not top 20! By far the most pleasant surprise for me is that ATB's managed to get into the top 20 biggrin.gif I always thought that it was a song that I over obsessed about and that nobody else actually thought much of it anymore, but that's clearly not the case - it's not exactly 'typical BJ fare' but its done very well indeed! Nice to see the two best Spice's tracks and Cher in there too wub.gif

Posted by: superbossanova 31st March 2011, 07:29 AM

Wot a flop from All Saints sad.gif Evidently it's clear this site is full of SPICE GIRLS loons.

Surprised Meat Loaf is so high blink.gif I was shocked it even made the final tbh, let alone coming in the top half (just!)

I was the only one to vote for The Clash. Tragically low places for Adamski, Run-DMC (though they didn't make my votes), Fugees, Babylon Zoo, Olive & Oasis, too!

I really have no idea who is going to win this. From the votes it didn't seem like any song was getting loads of high points, so I'd guess it's pretty close at the top, and some of the lower votes have been quite instrumental in deciding the winner.

Also, great to see Coolio, White Town and Blur top 20 especially!!

"Brimful of Asha" deserves to be a lot higher, as Breathe, Bohemian Rhapsody and Some Might Say sad.gif

I must say i'm pleased wit most songs that are in the Top 20! Oasis or White Town for #1 (but i guess Spice Girls or Madonna will win)

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 31st March 2011, 02:56 PM

Shocked 'Never Ever' was so low. A really good pop song, I didn't vote for it but it wasn't far off.

Pleased 'Brimful of Asha' got so high but a shame it couldn't go top 20. Pleased to see Queen not make the top 20, best song ever my arse!

Posted by: tonyttt31 31st March 2011, 03:29 PM

U2 - The Fly is the best number 1 of the 90s. Superior to most songs ever recorded.

Posted by: chart wizard 31st March 2011, 04:03 PM

Eiffel, Queen and Oasis out sad.gif although Queen did pretty well considering all the -2's they were given, plus they would've actually done really well without them ohmy.gif

great to see Manics and the other Oasis song still to come- could this probably be the first countdown ever in Buzzjack history that a female doesn't win? ohmy.gif *crosses fingers*

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 04:13 PM

There are more males than females in the top 20 so there is a chance of it happening

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:27 PM

20 - White Town "Your Woman" (1997) (+56)

One hit wonder band White Town just make the top 20 with a song that would thirteen years later be sampled by grime artist Wiley and singer Emeli Sande for "Never Be Your Woman" which did poor compared to this

Wow, I completely missed the first 30!

I must say that you're doing a great job with this, I've been impressed by how you've managed to stick to running it so efficiently.

As for the results so far, Cornershop is just great so a shame it missed the top 20 - although if you'd have said it would finish at #21 before we started then I'd probably have settled for it. Also quite impressed that Enigma faired so well.

However I am mostly chuffed by White Town, KLF, Shakespears Sisters and Blur all making the top 20, excellent taste BJers.

Oh, I appear to have cursed White Town. That's my favourite in the whole chart. wub.gif

This is due to this week being the last week of term for me, so a lack of homework and lots of free time. I finish school at 12.30 tomorrow so 10 - 1 could possibly be revealed just after that. I'm not revealing it in the morning as I want it to be exciting

19 - Blondie "Maria" (1999) (+57)

After a number of years off, 80s group Blondie make a massive comeback with this entering straight at number one.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:41 PM

18 - The Prodigy "Firestarter" (1996) (+59)

The first number one scored by The Prodigy, it held the position for three weeks.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:46 PM

17 - Shakespear's Sister "Stay" (1992) (+60)

This song spent eight consecutive weeks at the top spot back in 92', eighteen years later it re-entered the chart after Cher Lloyd off X Factor performed it

Posted by: superbossanova 31st March 2011, 05:47 PM

White Town outperformed my expectations by far (I even posted in the 1997 rounds that I was gutted how crap I thought it was doing just from scanning the votes, but evidently I was wrong as it went on to qualify!)... adore it. And thanks to Wiley, even though you murdered it, for perhaps latching some of the younger members on to the song, otherwise maybe it wouldn't have found its way this high on the countdown.

Blondie wub.gif I have to say it was incredibly difficult to leave it out of my votes. It was one of the last songs I deleted when whittling down my list of 24 (I think!) songs that I decided could have a place in my top 10 sad.gif Love them, and Maria will always have a special place in my heart as the first song I ever heard by them (naturally, given my age). Chuffed it did so well here.

The Prodigy at #18... I'd say that's just about the right place for them, actually.

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 05:57 PM

16 - Manic Street Preachers "If You Tolerate This..." (1998) (+61)

The first number one for the Manics after being in the charts since Feb 1991 (Motown Junk, number 94). They are a very successful band and are still around today (Postcards of a Young Man, number 54) was their last hit in the charts.

Posted by: chart wizard 31st March 2011, 05:58 PM

I wasn't expecting the Manics to get that high- really glad biggrin.gif

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 06:02 PM

15 - Blur "Beetlebum" (1997) (+63)

I'm surprised at the success of this song on BJ. It spent 3 weeks in the top 40 (so wasn't expecting it to be well remembered) and has received a lot of -2 points yet had very high points by some posters. If only "Song 2" went to number one - now that's a better song!

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 06:12 PM

14 - Coolio feat. LV "Gangsta's Paradise" (1995) (+65)

BJ is very anti-rap, so it's good to see this kind of song doing well here. This is Coolio's only number one as the follow up peaked at 9. GP spend 12 weeks in the top 10, including 7 weeks in the top 3, 3 weeks at number 2 and 2 weeks at number one

-2s don't make that much difference in this game though tongue.gif At best they might have been 10 places higher, I'd guess. Can't be arsed to go back and work it out.

And I think Oasis have a good chance of winning, considering it's quite poppy/anthemic for a rock song. Manics obviously don't as they're out now.

Oh no! I was kinda hoping this would win. Would have been quite funny giving it got this far from like maybe 5 or 6 posters putting it high biggrin.gif

As for Song 2, it might be better in your opinion, but I doubt it would have done as well here, as Beetlebum is much more popular among Blur fans in my experience. Though Song 2 probably would have picked up a lot more casual points - but that wasn't enough to send Country House to the final, so I doubt Song 2 would have made it either!

I'm no Blur fan so I don't know what is more popular out of Blur's singles ... well I do now. This competition has been very varied and not female pop dominant

Posted by: danielGaGa 31st March 2011, 06:26 PM

12 - Sinead O Connor "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990) (+70)

Surprised that The Verve, Take That and Sinead O'Connor are so high!

Winner most probably Madonna, Cher or Britney (?)!

I'm not hating, it just really creeps me out and it seems bizarre that it was a Spice Girls video. I had always associated it in my memory with some random emo rock band (as I had long forgotten what the actual song sounded like)

I think one of the reasons that Stay got such a high amount of points in the first round was down to 1992 only having 12 number ones. This meant that most of the acts in 1992 got a decent share of votes and weren't omitted from people's lists. Obviously it helps also that it's a fantastic song! thumbup.gif

I like all the songs left but my least fave is Vogue.

My top 10 predictions:

1 Oasis "Don't Look Back In Anger" wub.gif
2 Take That "Back For Good"
3 Madonna "Frozen"
4 Britney Spears "...Baby One More Time"
5 The Verve "The Drugs Don't Work"
6 ATB "9PM (Till' I Come)"
7 Madonna "Vogue"
8 Snap! "Rhythym is a Dancer"
9 Cher "Believe"
10 The KLF feat. The Children of the Revolution "3AM Eternal

Great to see "9PM (Till' I Come)", "Frozen" and "...Baby One More Time" in top 10, all 3 classics to me!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 1st April 2011, 08:50 AM

I knew the Wildcard idea would be a good one! tongue.gif

Pleased Blur made it so high, given that to the general public it's not very well remembered at all. It is, however, a wonderful song, one of my favourites by them (my favourite act ever) and probably my favourite number one of all time.

A shame 'Gangster's Paradise' didn't make the top 10, it seems to be one song which is universally loved by people who are fans of all different types of music. It's the one song from that genre that just seems to bring everyone together.

I'll be quite happy with 6 of the top 10 winning, just as long as it isn't Cher.

10 - Take That "Back For Good" (1995) (+76)

UK's biggest boyband who are still around today with their classic and best-selling "Back For Good" scrapes the top ten on BJ

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 02:24 PM

09 - ATB "9PM (Till' I Come)" (1999) (+80)

ATB's first single that spent 2 weeks at the top spot is in BJ's favourite ten. Yay for BJ having TASTE!!!

Posted by: gooddelta 1st April 2011, 02:29 PM

That's great for ATB, who'd have thought it would come top ten in the final? Not me! Good for Take That too, my 3rd favourite of their 90s singles but I prefer Never Forget and Pray personally - all are 9/10 songs at least though imo.

Posted by: nicco 1st April 2011, 02:31 PM

Oasis and The Verve still to come. Never expected them to be so high.

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 02:33 PM

08 - Snap! "Rhythm is a Dancer" (1992) (+87)

The second of the Snap! singles comes 40 places higher than the first. This song spent 6 weeks at number one.

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 02:43 PM

07 - The KLF feat. The Children of the Revolution "3AM Eternal" (1991) (+91)

The only number one for The KLF is this, and it has done very well for a rap song - although some would argue it is a dance song and not rap.

So which one of these songs will sadly miss the top 5, predict: - I obviously won't be predicting as I know all

Britney Spears "... Baby One More Time"
Cher "Believe"
Madonna "Frozen"
Madonna "Vogue"
Oasis "Don't Look Back In Anger"
The Verve "The Drugs Don't Work"

Posted by: nicco 1st April 2011, 02:46 PM

Oasis FTW.

But as i've said before Madonna or Britney will probably win. Please not an all female top 4!

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 03:09 PM

06 - Britney Spears "... Baby One More Time" (1999) (+94)

The first number one for Britney, and a million seller. She is still around today with new album "Femme Fatale"

Posted by: gooddelta 1st April 2011, 03:10 PM

05 - Madonna "Frozen" (1998) (+95)

Madonna's first comeback and eighth number one single out of thirteen. Madonna is the only artist to have 2 songs in the top 5, let alone the whole top ten

sad.gif This is the only really good song Madonna has ever done (she has loads of good songs but this is a cut above her other material) so very disappointed to see the sub-par Vogue ahead of this...

On a fairly unrelated note Nero's new song sounds a bit like this in places.

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 03:35 PM

04 - Cher "Believe" (1998) (+97)

This is no April fools, these female artists are dropping like flies, the top 3 has 2 bands and a female singer. This song was released over 30 years after when she got her first number one, "I Got You Babe" with Sonny but as the charts weren't agist in those days people loved it and it stayed at number one for 7 weeks. It was the first song to use auto-tune effects. Jennifer Lopez, even though she's over 40 has recently had a great comeback too, the 10's equivalent to Cher's massive comeback. The song lost out in its own round but it won the wildcard round and got sent through and beat every other song released in 1998. The wildcard round has had a big effect on this chart.

OMG Oasis and The Verve top 3??? Buzzjack you surprised me.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 1st April 2011, 03:37 PM

Please let 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'The Drugs Don't Work' be the top 2! biggrin.gif

Posted by: chart wizard 1st April 2011, 03:38 PM

surely the first time ever in any Buzzjack poll theres been a top 3 with just ONE female artist in ohmy.gif

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 03:39 PM

I can reveal that the number 3 song beats Cher by one point and loses to the number 2 single by more than 25 points. Any guesses?

Posted by: nicco 1st April 2011, 03:41 PM

It has to be Madonna Vogue?

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 03:42 PM

Before I say what is number 3, none of this is jokes and I'm pretty sure I counted correctly

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 03:44 PM

03 - Madonna "Vogue" (1991) (+98)

Is this the first time ever there has been an all male top 2? Anyway Madonna has done well to be the top female in the chart.

Female domination collapse.

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 03:54 PM

I can reveal that number one and number two have EXACTLY the same amount of points. This even surprised me. So, it goes down to individual points scored in the yearly rounds. If you can work out who is number one from what I said - which you can - do not spoil it!

Number one revealed at 5pm

Posted by: danielGaGa 1st April 2011, 04:01 PM

And the winner is...

kink.gif

02 - The Verve "The Drugs Don't Work" (1997) (+127) (indv. points = +289)

One of two classic songs by The Verve, the other being number 2 hit "Bittersweet Symphony" finishes at 2, on the same points as Oasis but with 10 less individual points.

01 - Oasis "Don't Look Back In Anger" (1996) (+127) (indv. points = +299)

And the winner is Oasis with their second most classic song, like The Verve, their most remembered song , "Wonderwall",peaked at 2. It is the band's second number one after "Some Might Say"

That's the end of the 90s number ones rate. It's been a great rate with lots of unexpected results. What should be next?

80s number ones
or...
90s number twos

Posted by: nicco 1st April 2011, 04:02 PM

What a mediocre top 3! Oh well. If that's what you guys want, you're welcome to it laugh.gif The better #1s of the 90s all bombed out from 11-50 in this countdown anyway (and a few out in the yearly rounds, like U2). I like about 6 songs in the top 10 but none of them apart from Cher and The KLF would make my personal top 20 of 90s #1s, and my least favourite song in the final also got top 10. Groan.

And why are people surprised that Don't Look Back in Anger did so well? I mean, come on. Look at the SONG, for god's sake, rather than getting so caught up in this male/female thing. It's basically a pop/rock song. It has a huge chorus with a very strong pop melody. And Noel sings it in its entirity, and his voice is also much more melodic than Liam's, while Liam's is more 'distinctive' I guess and thus more love/hate. The guitars are mellow, compared to Some Might Say (which WOULD have been a shocking winner). And it's ridiculously overplayed so everyone knows it. Not a surprise winner, though I didn't necessarily expect it either - although I did say yesterday I thought they had a good shot.

Oh, and thanks for running it, Daniel, indeed biggrin.gif

80s #1s next please. I would have supported 90s #2s before but after seeing the results of this I am also of the opinion that it would feature the mind-numbingly boring top 2 of Bittersweet Symphony vs Wonderwall, which doesn't interest me at all.

What you want is not what you get. Probably, the same will happen in 80s #1. Not a surprise winner for Don't Look Back In Anger? I mean how many polls have we done and despite some pop/rock songs that are also "overplayed" the winner was a female fave? The predictable winner here was Madonna or a song like Rhythm Is A Dancer that has purely marked the 90s. Don't Look Back In Anger has marked 90s but i think in most people some other songs are stronger. For me it was clearly a Top 10 contender but not a predictable winner.

Great work Daniel. I will go with 90s #2.

but look at all the polls BJ have done, I haven't seen a big poll (eg. number 1 of the year, Record of the decade) where a female hasn't come on top- to see Oasis and The Verve top 2 against the likes of Madonna and Britney on BUZZJACK of all places is surprising

LOL, get a grip for god's sake. I don't expect everything to fall into my opinion, I just don't have any interest in 90s #2s anymore as I believe it would be wholly predictable and therefore pointless. I'd probably still take part and I'd love to be proved wrong, though.

The only thing predictable about the 80s #1s would probably be all the Madonna songs doing very well. But I don't think she's necessarily a guaranteed winner at all.

And no, it really isn't a surprise winner. BuzzJack doesn't hate male pop songs, it's just there's not enough of them around in the current music scene.

Well done danielGaGa on this great forum about the 90s Number Ones Rate.

Oasis at No1 they can R.I.P shame they split up. But Don't Look Back In Anger was a good song. And well done to The Verve coming second.
Madonna in the Top3 'Vogue' one of her signature tunes.

Thanks to danielGaGa for doing a great job (Oh, and also to the person who took over for a week while daniel was serving his "sentence"! nono.gif

I'm probably the oldest person who voted in this poll (42!). Which mean's I'd like to see 1980's no.1's next. However 90's no.2's would be fun as well! Vote goes to 80's no.1's.

Underworld "Born Slippy" is a great song and should make the final easily

Posted by: superbossanova 1st April 2011, 06:40 PM

Underworld don't have that much competition.

Bluetones - Slight Return
3T - Anything
Robert Miles - Children
Mark Snow - X-Files
Manic Street Preachers - Design For Life
Peter Andre - Mysterious Girl
Underworld - Born Slippy
Robbie Williams - Freedom
Los del Rio - Macarena
3T - Why
George Michael - Spinning the Wheel
Kula Shaker - Hey Dude
East 17 & Gabrielle - If You Ever
Warren G with Adina Howard - What's Love Got to Do With It
Fugees - No Woman No Cry
Toni Braxton - Un-break My Heart

Some of these are totally forgotten! I've bolded the ones I would imagine will qualify for the instant final from that year biggrin.gif

Posted by: Bray 1st April 2011, 06:44 PM

I think it would work fine without being too confusing (although the first page on the chart forum might look a little bombarded at some points, maybe, especially when Dannyboy is still running his game, but oh well laugh.gif) and would satisfy pretty much everyone.

And of course a lot of Sash singles are #2.

EDIT: Wiseguys: Ooh La La too heart.gif

the 00s number 2s would be pretty predictable though (ie. Rihanna will most likely win the whole thing) - what I liked about this contest was how unpredictable it was, I would like to do this, but I'd prefer 90s #2s and 80s #1's before that

Posted by: John_Squire 1st April 2011, 07:16 PM

I'd like both 80s #1s and 90s #2s. And 00s #2s.

Go for a #2s rate next.

You mean like Madonna or Britney won this one? tongue.gif You people always think the worst of BuzzJack! I don't think Rihanna would win the whole thing, honestly - the songs that got to #2 for her in the 2000s are hardly huge fan favourites. I actually think the 1990s #2s will be VERY predictable, personally, but I'd go along with it, too.

Anyway, I think it's by far the most logical idea in terms of pleasing everyone. If you think it would be too predictable then you could just ignore it, vote in the 90s ones and leave the people who want to vote in the 00s one to do that.

I do like the idea of 80s #1s, but I'm not sure there'd be that much interest anyway. Plus isn't there a point where these kind of things should go in the retro forum? I think you could just get away with the 90s as the latter half of it isn't that retro, but the 80s is definitely very retro.

I'm not saying I oppose it and of course I'll give it a try tongue.gif but I think it will be more stereotypical BJ- the 00s number 1s rate was as well, so I think the others should be first- just what I think

How do people like the idea of 90s Number Twos Rate next, and after, 00s Number Twos. Running them both at the same time won't be good I don't think, but one after the other is a good idea. The guy who said 80s is too retro kinda has a point.

I think this should be the final decision and the 90s number twos rate will start soon, tomorrow if I feel like it, or I might leave it a day. And I love 'Love Shack' and 'Justified and Ancient' (if that's the song I'm thinking of) - both great songs. Hopefully Robert Miles will be this rate's ATB and get a surprisingly high mark

Except it wouldn't be surprising because Children is a true classic and it would be a disaster if it failed to go top 20 at the absolute minimum.

Great results overall, great job presenting it too Daniel!

I love Don't Look Back In Anger, my second favourite Oasis song after Live Forever biggrin.gif The Verve song, whilst not a favourite, is obviously a classic - Vogue is iconic but not a favourite of mine. And to say that she got through (ridiculously imo) only on a wildcard, I'm very happy that Cher managed 4th place wub.gif

"Children" is my favourite 90s song. It's amazing how a great instrumental can do so well in the charts back then, the song is so good it doesn't need words. Songs can never do that anymore. It is criminal that Take That stopped it with their boring cover, of course Oasis stopped it too but they are forgiven as they have a classic song

yes, this sounds great biggrin.gif Robert Miles should be top 10, its very well known, I hope Dario G pull off a surprise, beautiful song sad.gif

I love "Sunchyme" too, was definitely robbed of a number one. I gave Elton John minus points for holding off this song, and I gave Take That HDIYL minus points for holding off "Children". "Better Off Alone" is another great dance song that should have been a number one, it got held off by 3 different songs, all front-loaded too cry.gif

Wow, Oasis won it! ohmy.gif

Didn't expect that, truly deserved winner though. One of the absolute best wub.gif

80s No.1s next please biggrin.gif

It's already been decided. It's

1st Ultimate 90s Number Twos Rate - you'll like this, it's got "Bittersweet Symphony" and "Wonderwall"
2nd Ultimate 00s Number Twos Rate - this will be more BJ friendly but still exciting. Am hoping for a Rihanna win

Posted by: gooddelta 1st April 2011, 10:17 PM

Three of my all time top ten favourite songs were 90s #2's, I'm hopeful that Set You Free and Better Off Alone will be recognised in the same way that 9PM (Till I Come) was, I'm less certain that Runaway will do the business though...there are 3 songs that I'm already certain will be top ten.

As for 00's #2's, there's only one contender for my affections, a certain Rule The World...

It seems instrumentals can't be hits any more sad.gif The last really big instrumental hit was Pjanoo, we've had Poppiholla which was fairly big since then... I'm not forgetting any am I?

Disappointed with the results in general, dont like Oasis, Verve or Vogue. Some amazing classics near the bottom, Mr Vain, Sleeping Satellite, You're Not Alone, All That She Wants...

Never liked Don't Look Back in Anger. Always loved The Drugs Don't Work. Wrong song won. A very un-Buzzjack chart.

90s best number 2 = A Design for Life
80s best number 1 = It's A Sin

Oh and we've neglected mentioning Common People so far... best and most iconic #2 of the decade for sure.

I love 'Common People', would like it to come 2nd behind 'Children', but its more likely to come 4th after 'Wonderwall' , 'Bittersweet Symphony' and 'Torn'
