Who says that? Why can't it be? I'm 17 and I love Kylie and Madonna, I couldn't tell you what a Ramz is That may be true - in fact, I'm 20 and I'd take Kylie and Madonna over Ramz any day - but equally I don't think we're typical 17-28 year olds in that sense. I'd imagine a stereotypical Kylie fan is outside Radio 1's age bracket these days. It's a shame as I don't think Dancing would sound out of place on Radio 1 at all, it's not a million miles from Anywhere, but it makes sense from their perspective even if it's annoying for us. |

I mean I just don't know why they're limiting their audience... I find it shocking that even Britney and Kelly Clarkson are too "old" for them now. They can support new artists if they want but it wouldn't be hard for them to make room for veterans. This post has been edited by No Sleeep: 19th January 2018, 02:52 PM |

They limit their audience because their remit requires them to. See: every previous time this argument has happened.

I mean, it has only been a day for Dancing. There’s literally thousands of cases where a new single isn’t insta added to R1 but is added a couple of weeks down the line, even going A list.

Well I would like to see their playlists from years ago... did they playlist Hung Up, Sorry, 4 Minutes, 2 Hearts, All the Lovers, Believe, What's Love Got to Do With It, Chain Reaction etc? I would assume so, why not now? This post has been edited by No Sleeep: 19th January 2018, 03:12 PM |

I dare say Radio 1 will give it the odd spin here and there, but unfortunately there's no way they are going to playlist this unless it shows some real staying power on iTunes and builds up decent streams i.e prove that it is gain support outside her fanbase. It is a shame that Radio 1 tend to look more at the artist rather than the songs themselves but that's the way it is nowadays.
Radio 2 are bound to play 'Dancing' a lot and new outlets online seem to be very positive about this song which paves a great path for the album, which is the most important thing. |

Why shouldn't we have the debate? Why should we just accept ageism? They just assume that young viewers don't want to hear them... it wasn't the case in the late 90s and early 00s when Cher, Madonna, and even Diana Ross could still get hits. Tina Turner was in her late 40s/50s when she had a huge comeback. Cater for them? Do you really think songs like Living for Love and Dancing are suitable for Radio 2? If anybody else, Rita Ora, Dua Lipa or whatever she's called had released them they would go straight to A-list. It's a joke. Agree 100%...Well said |

From somebody that is a radio student, I think saying something is ageist on the radio is a lot harder to accuse of due to each radio station having different target audiences.

It doesn't seem like My Way will go A list then
At least it hasn't been removed yet! |

Not sure there was any real need to move Bruno up two playlists but there you go. Once again a disappointing week for new additions but there are so many songs now that need removing, I can see a healthy clearout coming next week, with plenty of new entries. Bruno is the sort of artist that should enter higher than the A List anyway and it jumped straight into the top 10 on Spotify and iTunes so understand why they put it C-A in this instance! |

From somebody that is a radio student, I think saying something is ageist on the radio is a lot harder to accuse of due to each radio station having different target audiences. Exactly you have to look at BBC radio as a whole and the BBC trust has stated they want radio to appeal to 15-35 yo and radio 2 for the older audience. It's been that way since the big shake up in 1992/93. When Madge had her first hit in 1984 and Kylie in 1988 that's why they have moved them over to the radio 2 playlist so BBC radio is still supporting them just not on radio 1. They now try to introduce artist they think with their help could be the next Kylie like Dua Lipa or Anne Marie! |

Have there been other instances where a song has moved C-A?

I wouldn't mind Radio 1's ageism against artists like Britney, Kelly, Kylie and Madonna if they were at least honest about it but they still say songs are playlisted on 'merit' and not the artist which is clearly not true

Have there been other instances where a song has moved C-A? Yeah, it does happen from time to time. 'Lonely Toegther' was the last one as Theo mentioned above, plus: I'm The One (2017) 7 Years (2016) Do It Again (by Pia Mia) (2015) Uptown Funk (2014) Do They Know It's Christmas (2014) Thinking Out Loud (2014) etc. |
