I was just thinking about how much artists were popular in 2010 and had their "biggest era" back then. In fact, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Lady GaGa had their biggest success ever in that year (Loud, Teenage Dream, Animal and Fame/Monster were HUGE) plus Alicia Keys had a million selling album and multiple hits that year too. You also had Bruno Mars debut with a massive single, you had the comeback of Eminem with Love The Way You Lie being huge, you had Ellie Goulding debuting, you had Alexandra Burke being a huge popstar with multiple hits, you had Plan B dominating the album charts, you had JLS + The Wanted + The Saturdays having success as groups (before all of them became flops), you had Tinie Tempah getting the big #1 singles and becoming the UK's most popular rapper, you had the World Cup stuff, you had Dizzee Rascal getting multiple #1's plus Black Eyed Peas were on fire and showing that the E.N.D era wasn't just a fluke by getting another huge #1 with The Time, you had Justin Bieber becoming a massive fame figure and becoming the most known name in the world, plus throughout the year you had the Helping Haiti stuff, the X-Factor charity single, the X-Factor winning single and all the charity stuff and then the one hit wonders like Iyaz and Owl City with big #1's. Also Miley Cyrus started to cause controversy and start to break away from her Disney image, Usher had a big era, Pink had a big hit, Leona Lewis was still fairly popular at the start of the year, B.O.B debuted with two massive #1 singles, Olly Murs debuted and was huge from the get-go with a triple platinum album and big singles, Diana Vickers had a #1 single even though at the time there was a big gap between her XF and her release (and the fact she hadn't even made the final).....

It was just such a busy year with so much great pop music, so much action in the charts and probably the peak of so many artists careers. Weren't sales pretty big that year too? It sucks these days because the chart is just full of random DJ's and indie boys with guitars. All the big names have either dissapeared, flopped or are taking ages between releases.

I generally see 2009/2010 as exciting years for pop, it was kind of a pop-renaissance, as UK music had been kind of drowned out by indie-pop/rock for almost a decade. It was a particularly good time for female solo artists.

2010 was a step down for me compared to 2008 and 2009 which were probably my favourite two years of music ever! Although there were still some brilliant songs. My top 10 of the year is something like:

04 Selena Gomez & The Scene - A Year Without Rain
05 Marina & The Diamonds - Hollywood
06 Lady Gaga - Telephone

Fantastic year for me but the charts I didn't find especially strong overall, as 2010/11 was 'club banger' overload for the most part. However I relate songs from this period with fond memories of living in Wales.

2010 was quite a good year but I preferred 2011-12 myself with all the brilliant club bangers and various other greats.

It's better than the state of the charts at the moment anyway but I am enjoying music more now than I did in 2010, it's just that less of the songs in the chart are songs I'm huge on [plus the fact there's a lot less songs getting into the chart in the first place]

It was a weird year musically for me. There were around a dozen amazing songs, another dozen good songs, a few okay songs and the rest was diabolical.

I found 2010 a very poor year in terms of quality of music, it didn't help with the real lack of lasting hits and the constant generic dance/pop sound. I have scarcely few all time favourites.

I agree there was a lot going on as well as high sales. It's just these 'big names' just aren't all that big any more (Bieber aside ofc.) and the pop/dance sound has just moved on (a lot of the number 1s particularly were very of their time and would struggle to even make the top 10 if released today).

These are the tracks I liked best in 2010 - guess what - the charts were better then, turnover was higher, there was a wider range of genres and ages and records didn't hang about for years blocking new music.


I always love pop so that's never a problem for me

For me the whole period from 2008-2012 was mostly atrocious. I hated the dance-pop trend as it killed both dance and r&b music and it morphed into one generic genre (my opinion ). I hope I never have to hear someone scream 'Red One' at the beginning of a track again. I'd much rather hear 'Mustard on the beat'

2010 was a really big year indeed for all those artist but I'm really happy music has shifted. I think pop music right now is just as much fun again as it was in the early 00s.

2011 must have been peak "banger" year. Every song had the same riff, had a female singing and a guy rapping on it. Homogeneous mess.

When it comes down to it, I trace that trend back to Guetta + Akon's 'Sexy Bitch', that was the one loads of people modelled clones from and it wasn't long before the likes of Pitbull and Flo Rida were spitting out copies of it left, right and centre.

Sexy Bitch definitely feels like a 2010s #1 (slightly) before its time, though - the noughties equivalent of Artful Dodger's 'Rewind' in 1999 and Lil Louis's 'French Kiss' in 1989, two songs released at the very end of one decade which sound and fit much more into the next. And Tubeway Army for 1979 maybe.

2008 feels like it fits much more into the noughties than 2009 does, which had a lot more dance-pop and a lot less indie-rock and feels now much more like the 2010s arriving early.

Retro is an age state of mind

I kinda pop over the 90s limit for my top 800 and need to bear in mind as time passes that so should the definition of what is retro.

Buzzjack is 10 years old so if retro included the 90s way back it really ought now to include the noughties which are a whopping 16 years old at the start. Obviously not my decision to make but at some stage if the noughties don't get included visitors to the forum will decline as we start dying from old age!

I know I look back nostalgically at the early 00's and my clubbing days - ok I was in my 40s but hey I enjoyed it

When I joined Buzzjack in 2008 I remember reading that the millennium was the cut-off for Retro - I seem to recall someone starting a Vengaboys thread and being slated for it, something that seemed a tad unfair at the time but I suppose it had only been seven years since their last hit single - a bit like if someone started a Little Boots retro thread today!

I agree that the early (possibly mid) noughties should definitely count for Retro now, it's hard to pinpoint a date when retro ends and "recent" begins though - it's constantly shifting. I think of the last Retro year as 2008 now for reasons mentioned earlier.

yes I agree with the last comments, I may bring it up as a suggestion to discuss to geta bit more interest from a younger crowd on here and make it officially at least over a decade as "retro"- I know when I was pushing 30 I was very nostalgic for the good ol' days of 15 years back, and when I was pushing 20 10 years ago was very nostalgic indeed. Time expands the gap as you get older (the noughties seem recent to me, except for the very early years) and I've only just started getting nostalgic for the 90's really, but that's cos I'm approaching 50 - from the wrong direction

2010 wasn't a bad year, it definitely had standouts in terms of chart hits and otherwise (I'd look at Hurts' Wonderful Life and Yeasayer's O.N.E as examples of the latter) and it may have been 'big' in the sense you described, though from a musical perspective it was rather unspectacular for me. It felt like the chart seemed to vary between about three different genres, with the odd exception.

from the most memorable/notable hits- there was Gaga still banging out some strong pop tunes, Tinie Tempah landing on the scene with one of the better UK pop rap tunes "Pass Out", the breakthrough of "dubstep" with Katy On A Mission, some novelty dance hits like We No Speak Americano/Barbra Streisand, a couple of other cool standouts like f*** You/Fireflies, and I guess Wavin' Flag too because World Cup memories. Generally I'd pick other years from 2010s over this though (plus 2010 was kinda the beginning of that "club banger" overload that leaked into 2011, the best of these perhaps being "Like A G6" since it actually stood out in some way, by just being a icy cold robotic mess)

Although Biffy Clyro did get a Christmas #1 single this year, so there's that
