It would require legislation from Westminster. Individual councils (apart from county councils and, I believe, London boroughs) can decide whether to elect by thirds or in all-up elections, but the electoral system is imposed from above.

I regret to say that I have not voted - my choice was either Con or LD, and no way was I going to vote for either of *those*. puke.gif

Also, since the polling station is over a mile away, no way was I going to waste that much time walking, just to spoil a ballot paper!

After 7 (!) votes in the last 4 years, I'm actually quite glad that there are no elections here today. <3

Every local election sees parties embarrassed by their choice of candidate somewhere. These candidates are often standing in a ward where they have no realistic chance of being elected meaning that the vetting process was probably far from rigorous. However, this year there is a Tory candidate standing in Hastings (which just happens to be Amber Rudd's constituency) in a ward which currently has one Tory and one Labour councillor.

This particular candidate claims to have been in the armed forces for many years, including serving in the Falklands conflict. Unfortunately, nobody who actually served there seems to have heard of him. Naturally the local party has been asked for comment and their response is to say that it is not a matter for the electorate. So the official line form Hastings Tories seems to be that voters shouldn't worry about whether their council candidates are blatant liars. They are clearly taking their lead from their MP.

And yet labour cant be arsed to run a candidate to give people a wider democratic choice?

Meanwhile corbyns right hand man ghost writes a union leaders column to condemn anyone in his party who democratically disagrees with his views and blames genuine comments on jewish intolerance from some quarters as just an excuse to get at him. Paranoid, intolerant and hypocritical considering corbyn spent 35 years doing that.....and he wasnt threatened with deselection whenever HE expressed his views.

Sneaky underhanded and still refusing to talk about important national issues and labour party stance. Good to see he finslly got round to supporting david lammy years late about windrush - at least in terms of taking an oportunity to slag off May, if not actually congratulating lammy for doing that when jezza is far too busy avoiding the press to support the cause publicly, or in any way pushing it up the sgenda even knowing it could crucify t may.

I would call that gross and puke inducing incompetence myself, so lets just round the number of parties up to 3 shall we....?

It's hardly promising ground for them...

When they've tried before, they've been lucky if their number of votes gets out of single figures! laugh.gif

Not the point. People should still have the choice even if its a lost cause. Politics works over the long haul...

But you can't put up a candidate if there's no-one who wants to do it.

Labour haven't even contested Swindon Village since 2004, though Greens & the People Against Bureaucracy group have.

Idealistic NONSENSE

The left should work together. In a Lib Tory seat, Labour does it right by NOT fielding candidates.

The left is split, but accounts for more voters than the right. Don't diminish Carpline Lucas' vote, or the Lib Dem vote in marginals with Tories, and there we go. Bye bye Tory.

Anyone pulling an all-nighter to watch the results coming in, or is it more of a "will check in every now and then throughout the night" kind of thing?

All 101 seats are up for contention in Birmingham City Council. Will be interesting to see whether the bins saga impacts on Labour's vote as they oversaw that chaos last year! Hoping Labour can at least hold most of its seats and the majority in the Council but we'll see...

Early results are trickling in. The Tories have gained a seat from UKIP in Basildon. The Lib Dems have won a seat in Sunderland with 60% of the vote having got just 3% four years ago. If that one result was repeated across the country, the Lib Dems would win every seat tongue.gif

That Jeremy Corbyn "praying" picture is going to be his "banana" photo, isn't it.
