On the other hand, this week he misses out due to digital sales. In a correct world, he'd have the only debuts this week but ARIA have mixed it up by needlessly taking an extra week to acknowledge NEIKED's "Better Days". Ed Sheeran also debuts in the top 10 with "Overpass Graffiti" as the highest of 3 top 50 debuts but admittedly it's already dipping away so he'll need some sort of break out hit to salvage what is inarguably his least impactful album release in the streaming era. "Mr. Brightside" returns for the 3rd time this year and it's worth noting that I'm still 95% sure ARIA is messing up the numbers because it's always way higher on Spotify than ARIA and there is not a single notable platform in which "Fair Trade" isn't being distinctly outperformed by it and yet. Next week we'll find out if ARIA will add to the nonsense in a rare time where I am prepared to say that Calum Scott is underrepresented on the chart because Where Are You Now seems to be missing. bbno$ also is looking to finally break into the top 50 if ARIA choose to acknowledge "edamame". To nobody's surprise, Ed Sheeran has his 5th #1 album this week. Typically speaking, the arrival of a new album from him brings the rest of his back catalogue vaulting back up the chart but that has scarcely happened this time. Mind you it's an above average week in terms of how busy it is. On the other hand, it's finally a slow enough week for Doja Cat to reach #2 for the first time, though she has the only non-#1 album in the top 10. Dami Im misses the top 10 for the first time but by all accounts is doing far better than an X Factor winner 8 years after the fact should be expected to do. Mastodon also dip back considerably after their last album reached #3. Extremely '90s Australian music moment is the return of Even, who actually get their highest ever charting album this week. The War On Drugs also take a similar decline to Mastodon after reaching the top 5 a few years ago. Spice Girls return thanks to their copious vinyl sales, and as an ominous preview to next week's chart, we see the return of Limp Bizkit, who you might recall 20 years ago in this very nation had a victim of crowd crushing during their Big Day Out set 2 decades ago. Next week I suspect it will be ABBA returning to the top of the charts, followed by assorted arrivals by Radiohead, Bullet For My Valentine, Summer Walker & Parcels. |

XXXTENTACION 50 47 385 01 X Ed Sheeran In bizarre news, Adele might be returning to #1 this coming week. Not for legitimate purposes but because ARIA just posted their mid-week preview and the only Taylor Swift debuts are the new versions of "Red", "We Are Never Getting Back Together", and also "I Bet You Think About Me", which would be somewhere along the lines of the 2nd, 7th & 9th highest entries she naturally would look poised for and doesn't even include the song that's being promoted by Hot Hits Australia or you know, either version of "All Too Well" which has been leading on Spotify all week. Make no mistake that if combined, "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" is absolutely a lock for #1, if not then I suspect it's a close miss, but basically if there are any Swifties reading this then by all means raise hell with ARIA before they out-parody themselves. In this week news, Post Malone gets into the top 10 after missing out with his last single, evidently The Weeknd has a knack for low top 10 debuts this year. I need not dwell on the inauspicious timing of the arrival of two new Travis Scott songs though I will point out that while Today's Top Hits on Spotify has been steadily sliding "ESCAPE PLAN" down its playlist in the past week, Hot Hits Australia, slow as they ever are, waited until after Travis Scott was somewhat complicit in the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 10 concert goers to ADD the song to their playlist which is certainly a choice. Silk Sonic arrive with their 3rd top 40 hit and it looks like "Smokin Out The Window" should be vaulting in or towards the top 10 next week. To the shock of (I assume) nobody, ABBA arrive at the #1 spot with "Voyage", their first stint at #1 since "ABBA Gold" started stuffing stockings in 1992, which I believe in some respects might make it my birthday #1 although it depends on your interpretation of which weeks line up to which days of which I don't think there's a clear answer to. So it's either that or a Simple Minds Greatest Hits and don't you forget it. Radiohead are immensely good at hitting the #2 spot on the album chart and in fact did it with both "Kid A" and "Amnesiac"...and every studio album that followed them. So for a change of pace, the new "Kid A Mnesia" collection enters at a modest #3, though being ahead of the streaming giants does lean big credence to the idea that Radiohead could easily get a #1 album if they stop choosing the worst weeks to release on. Bullet For My Valentine have been hitting the top 10 regularly since 2008, even the #1 spot in 2015 but this week they're a little lower in the top 20. Summer Walker also doesn't *quite* match the #17 peak of "Over It" but she's close on a tougher week. Hockey Dad's new live album release does not contain any transmissions to the one armed scissor, nor any hexes that were delivered spent, but it does chart slightly higher than At The Drive-In's "Relationship Of Command" and holy shit what a banger of an album that is. Local but overseas based spacebar boycotters Parcels score their first ever top 50 album this week while we have yet another Gareth Liddiard side project entering with the self-titled first album for Springtime. Snail Mail is also debuting for the first time. Next week's album chart has a bit more safe certainty on Taylor Swift debuting at #1, and she'll likely be joined by Silk Sonic, Flight Facilities, Courtney Barnett and Little Mix in the top 10. IDLES & Rod Stewart should also get in somewhere. |

This has been pretty par the course of late as she scored two #1 hits last year. Though the long term is uncertain, it looks like "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" will have a better second week than either "cardigan" or "willow" and might only drop to #2 next week. Adele was initially looking like going back to #1 last week but she'll probably do it for real next week alongside her new album. Elsewhere this week Silk Sonic climb into the top 10 with "Smokin Out The Window". "Leave The Door Open" actually only got to #10 so this is a new high for the duo (though Anderson .Paak still has the cursed fact that his highest chart entry is still Macklemore's "Dance Off"). Taylor Swift takes over the chart otherwise this week except that's the funny thing. Last week I said that they may have bungled things as the vast majority of her debuts (including "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)") weren't even on the midweeks. This was largely fixed up but not quite because I still think there are a couple missing in the top 50. This week Taylor Swift scores her 9th #1 album. This has been pretty par the course of late as she scored two #1 albums last year. She leads up a pretty busy top 10 for debuts. Silk Sonic debut at #4, relatively low for Bruno Mars but relatively high for Anderson .Paak. Courtney Barnett returns to score her 4th top 5 album, and ever the slow gestators, Flight Facilities (aka the source of my avatar, aka the source of Australians have very different opinions on "Clair de lune" to you) return with their 2nd album which lands a little lower than their hit-laden debut. Kylie Minogue returns thanks to the new versions of "DISCO" out last week and Little Mix impressively maintain their top 10 streak despite being further and further out from the last time they actually had a hit here (apart from "Heartbreak Anthem"). IDLES last year scored a top 10 album though this time their new album which I admit I didn't even know was coming until the day it dropped lands at #26. The Wombats issued a 10th anniversary album of their 2nd album, which is the album that started the era in which they were undeniably more popular in Australia than in the UK, Australia just really bloody loved this and the next Wombats albums. Next week Adele will arrive at the #1 spot. I don't know what else will even make the top 50, maybe James Blunt. (Note to self: drag Jolyon Petch next week) This post has been edited by Dircadirca: Nov 24 2021, 09:44 PM |

She's definitely solid for next week although it does seem that she's likely to succumb to her prior equilibrium, which is an unnecessarily wordy way to say she'll go back to moving the units she was before the album came out which probably isn't enough for #1. Adele also has the lion's share of new entries this week, including two in the top 10. This gives her the rare feat of having 3 top 10 singles and albums at the same time which hasn't been done since Ed Sheeran did it back in 2017. It also allows me to point out ARIA Shenanigans™, as eagle-eyed viewers might note that Adele has merely 9 debuts this week, with "Woman Like Me" and "Love Is A Game" missing. I think they'd probably have made the top 50 but not quite top 40 with the rest of the album. We'll never know why they're missing though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The other proper debut this week is from GAYLE who is showing some serious Arizona Zervas energy by vaulting up the chart at rapid speed near the end of the year, and continues to introduce a world where globally charting artists have Twitter follower counts in a similar ballpark to me, though in her defence it is slightly difficult to find her. Perhaps her handle suggests she'll be appearing on Jeopardy! soon. "abcdefu" will probably climb into the top 10 next week. Imagine Dragons climb into the top 50 to score their biggest hit in ages with "Enemy". It's the first time in the chart for JID and shockingly also the first time for the intangible entity of League of Legends. A few months back Angus & Julia Stone got the first ever video game soundtrack into the chart, and now League is the first ever video game to have a hit single, unless there's some dumb other technicality you can think of. The best I had is that Celeste is the name of a (very good) video game and Daphne & Celeste had some hits back in the day. The other improper debut is from Taylor Swift whose "Enchanted" has been curiously missing from the chart for weeks but now is allowed in and just squeaks into the top 50 but is certainly on its way out. Of note, apart from "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)", her only debut to last in the top 50 is the Ed Sheeran collab solely because it's the one that's on Hot Hits Australia. As well as there being songs missing from the chart which does not just include Adele, but also "SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY" and "Where Are You Now", the latter is actually the top track on HHA, the second time this year that it's been a song ARIA aren't counting. HHA added "The Thrill" back in March. It's now December and it's still on there. ON THE TOPIC OF SUSPICIOUSLY ASTROTURFED HITS, you've probably noticed for the past 4 months that there's been a cover of "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac on the chart here. It coinciding with the presence of actual "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac is a mark against its need to be here, and in fact it was pretty much set to get overtaken by the original article pretty soon, although it's now seeing a boost of inauspicious activity. Last week was the ARIA Awards which for the first time in decades wasn't actually broadcast on TV but just on YouTube, which I probably would've watched if I didn't just happen to be out for the exact time slot that it was being aired. Congrats go out to Genesis Owusu for dominating the awards though. Anyway, that cover of "Dreams" was nominated for Best Dance Release which if we're looking for silver linings, means that at least it won't be nominated for Song Of The Year in 2022 because it 100% would have otherwise because we have the dumbest system in place. It didn't win the award (shout out to ya bois RÜFÜS DU SOL), but it generated controversy in the sidelines. As I noted when it entered the top 50, the vocalist on the track is Reigan Derry, who is probably familiar to you if you've been invested in Australian reality TV singing competitions in the past decade and a half, or for that matter the charts as she's had several top 50 hits over the years, though nothing with the sustained success (via playlists & radio spam lol) of "Dreams". Since she's not credited on the track, nor on any of the metadata, she's been unable to see any profit on this windfall. This all boils down to Jolyon being kind of an arsehole regarding residuals but also seemingly releasing the song through his label without her permission (the vocal track was merely a demo). When she tried to reach out to him about amending things, he blocked her on social media and proceeded to avoid mentioning her in interviews. Apparently all of this bureaucracy also meant that she wasn't even able to attend the ARIA Awards because she technically hadn't been nominated (sidebar: in general acting like an artist didn't have a hit song because they're not credited, whether on official metadata or the OCC is pretty shitty). There's been some back & forth on social media however the posts have now been deleted, and Jolyon has privated his instagram account and seemingly deleted his Twitter account, so I don't know where any of this is going but I really just want to point out the surprisingly slimy underbelly of a made-for-radio cash in on a TikTok with "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac from a year ago. On the album chart, Adele has her 3rd #1 album. One should probably not even pretend to be shocked by that. Doing so, she bests Australian music royalty Paul Kelly, who lately seems to be putting out a new album pretty much every year. This latest one is a Christmas album which includes newly written songs among a multitude of covers. It also of course features a new version of Australia's only noteworthy Christmas canon "How To Make Gravy" (I assume because "Hey Santa Claus" isn't ever going to end up on playlists), because how could it possibly be a Paul Kelly Christmas album without it. Bruce Springsteen reaches the top 10 with a live album. Plant & Krauss are back again at last and chart much higher than their first album together, which briefly reached the top 50 after its big Grammy win in 2009. Speaking of the late 2000s, Andre Rieu is back on the charts. In the world of vinyl re-releases and the like we have a return for twenty one pilots (and I guess Michael Buble also technically counts but that's not why he's here), and a debut for Frenzal Rhomb's second album from 1996 which unlike Adele's new album, debuts with a gold certification. Notably it's the only album I've ever known to have 35 secret tracks. |

Adele gets a 4th week at #1 or perhaps befitting of 2021, a second 2 week reign at #1. She should maintain it next week although afterwards it's hard to say. GAYLE storms into the top 5 no less prior to being yanked back down by the forces of Spotify Wrapped. Our typical Christmas affair begins as we try and work out which songs will be let onto the chart and when. Oddly it seems that "Santa Tell Me" is missing from the chart, but stuff like this will be more apparent next week. It seems even ARIA don't care enough to write midweeks anymore. I also must apologise to all the people who might recall me mentioning that ArrDee's "Flowers" wasn't doing anything in Australia because I had somehow glazed over it. Anyway Sweet Female Attitude never charted here of course so make of that what you will. This is ArrDee's first proper credited entry in the top 50 if you're a stickler for that. Adele is #1 again of course on the album chart. The only new arrival we get is from Chillinit who of course last week was also arrested for not wearing a mask in a shopping centre. James Blunt also climbs into the top 50 after debuting below it last week. |

We'll probably be stuck like this until Mariah Carey claims #1 for the 4th year in a row. Two things I will note about Christmas stuff this year, firstly that Michael Buble has seemingly charged ahead of Wham! which is atypical, while Brenda Lee is charting higher than usual purely because she no longer has her streams split on Spotify so ARIA is actually counting it correctly...or at least it appears to be, as she's still quite low all things considered, so maybe Apple streams aren't counting. In ARIA getting things right, Lost Frequencies finally arrives for both his and Calum Scott's 3rd top 50 hits, it just took about 6 weeks to finally get the tick of approval. Arriving higher is SZA who may have to wait until January to really get going though she's doing well so far. Ed Sheeran & Elton John are largely being carried by sales without much in the way of streaming, but that might increase enough next week to offset the sales dip. Oh and someone called Emmy Meli is in the top 50 for the first time. Adele holds the top album slot as she is known to do. She'll need another 5 weeks to match "25"'s reign. This week's big new entry comes from an album of bird calls, comprised of 53 of our most threatened species. Below that is a live Teskey Brothers album, a surprisingly acknowledged re-issue for Polo G, and a 10th anniversary re-issue of The Smith Street Band's first album, which seems to be the common route to getting bands' back catalogues onto the chart for the first time now. |

Christmas invasion seems much less pronounced in Australia at this stage at least. Only 5 singles in the Top 50, with 3 in the Top 20 and the highest at #8.

The numbers are a little higher than last year on Spotify (except for "Santa Tell Me" which was probably boosted by "Positions" last year). Something something nobody wants to listen to Tony Bennett on a 40C day in summer. |

Well, that's what should be happening but as fate would have it, ARIA don't seem to have a very logical solution to the trouble of building streams for Christmas songs. Last year's Christmas charts were rendered completely meaningless because Christmas Eve streams were lost to the ether, and that was back when ARIA published the charts on Saturday afternoon, rather than Friday. Christmas Eve will count this year but that's on the next tracking week, whereas there's still a significant boost on Dec 23rd which will go unrecognised on next week's chart. It would not surprise me if this single day is the difference between Mariah Carey getting to #1 and not, whereas I suspect the combined efforts of Dec 24th & Dec 25th should be more than enough to lock it in for her the week after on the chart dated Jan 3rd, 2022. It's possible that GAYLE could snatch the top spot too as she got rather close this week and I can't really confirm what her extra versions are doing to her streaming total. In noteworthy Christmas shenanigans, Wham! have overtaken Michael Buble for the first time this year, potentially preventing him from hitting a new peak next fortnight. Bobby Helms is doing better than usual, and potentially Jose Feliciano could reach the top 50 for the first time ever this week, despite usually not even charting at all. Elsewhere, Acraze is in the top 10, Imagine Dragons have their highest charting single since "Thunder" and there's just the one top 50 entry from the new Juice WRLD album. "Mr. Brightside" reached a new high in weekly Spotify streams but is unable to reach the top 50 because its Apple streams are missing. On the album chart Adele is #1 again but is facing stiffer and stiffer competition from endangered birds. In their second week they land above the not-highly sought second posthumous Juice WRLD album. Norah Jones' Christmas album climbs into the top 50 and there's not much else happening. RÜFÜS DU SOL got voted for Album Of The Year by triple j listeners which might explain their slight climb this week, we'll see in 11 months if ARIA follow suit (nah they'll give it to Gang Of Youths). |

The lack of Thursday data being tracked or even estimated, so all the Christmas music should be a bit higher, Mariah should be #1. Next week should be more accurate though, and that will come in a new thread. I will return to this thread however to post the End Of Year charts when they arrive. Also of note this week, the return of Jam Mountain Music who appeared out of nowhere last December, and LadBaby who has been climbing higher and higher each year gets his first top 50 hit here. Not much happening on the album chart but Norah Jones got a new peak and Something For Kate return with their classic 2001 album "Echolalia", recommend if you like introspective alternative rock by a very tall man. |

OMG COLD HEART SUPREMACY KEEPING THE OLD CHRISTMAS MUSIC OFF THE TOP! Only fraudulently. I don't want to spread mis-information but I'm 99% certain that if the chart were accurately compiled, Mariah would rightly be #1, so stick a big fat asterisk next to it. |

Firstly I'll just make some clarifications since the ARIA Charts are written in a different language to our own which we're still trying to decipher to this day. All the credits provided I spelled them correctly are as is on the chart. ARIA have a habit of choosing one credit and maybe changing it once but then sticking with it to the bitter end. This means that when remixes come out they usually just leave as is or completely disregard common sense in the long run. So yes that is Miley Cyrus on the 4th biggest hit of the year and no, that version of the song was not remotely as popular as the original. Similarly if you look at this year's Hip-Hop/R&B list, you'll find that Skrillex is still contributing to "HUMBLE.". Secondly, ARIA run these numbers purely from what appeared on their chart. I've learnt recently that this includes sales figures beyond even the top 500. This is data from every weekly chart dated 11/01/2021 to 03/01/2022 inclusive. This however means that if ARIA were initially not tracking a song but later include it, those early weeks are lost forever. Notable losers in this category include "Woman" by Doja Cat which was missing for a month and a half, "Riptide" by Vance Joy which disappeared 18 months ago and has never returned, and also "The Thrill" by Wiz Khalifa which is still missing to this day. It is also minutely possible that "Meet Me At Our Spot" and "Love Tonight" could've squeezed in if they'd been tracked all year but I'm less certain of this. The album chart is the same deal as the singles chart except we can never be certain of what counts to what. It certainly appears as if streams of "Fix You" (or any of their hits) by Coldplay are being re-directed to their "Live In Buenos Aires" album which makes this list for the 2nd year in a row, but it's possible that not all of them are, maybe "Yellow" or "Adventure of a Lifetime" go to their respective studio albums instead. Until ARIA decide to grow more transparent with their data, we'll never know. This is the 5th year in a row that "Perfect" has made the list, with no signs of slowing down, in fact the signs are so few that it's actually 18 places higher than it was last year, though you might attribute it to Ed Sheeran putting out an album this year as all of his stuff ("No.6" excluded) is higher this year than last year. It's however the first time that "Mr Brightside" has made the list which perhaps will join the crew of songs that are on this list every year. There were more Australian singles this year than last year, 15 vs. 10. If you wish to argue that The Kid LAROI saved Australian music last year, well Facebook would have fun with that thinkpiece. On the other hand, the album chart is a big swing in the other direction, dropping from 24 to 14. Considering that this week's ARIA top 50 has only 4 Australian albums and a year ago there were 10, it doesn't look like it's getting better, so perhaps we'll need to commission Bluey to save Australian music this year. Somehow I'm skeptical that "Down Under", "We Run The Night", "Cold Heart" and "The Thrill" are gonna utilise their exposure to move Australian albums off shelves. |

Interesting that 'good 4 u' didn't overtake 'drivers license' here and in a few other countries, unlike the UK and US!
#33 is pretty good for Adele! Also glad to see 'Cover Me In Sunshine' in the top 20. |
