Chart-topper Will Young is to headline what promises to be a night to remember at Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre.

The singer-songwriter –best known for hits including Love Revolution, Leave Right Now, Jealousy and Light My Fire –will perform at Europe’s largest open air theatre on Thursday June 30th.

Will’s addition to Scarborough OAT’s 2016 programme is further evidence that it will be an unforgettable summer of live music on the Yorkshire coast.

British soul superstars Simply Red, former The Beautiful South stars Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, rock legends Status Quo, West End king Alfie Boe and ‘Legends of Pop’ Tony Hadley, Jason Donovan and Rick Astley have already been confirmed for dates between June and August.

Tickets for Will Young’s show go on sale at 9am Monday December 14th.

Peter Taylor, Director of concert promoters Cuffe and Taylor, who are curating Scarborough OAT’s 2016 programme, said: “Will is a hugely talented singer-songwriter who has not only produced a stunning and creative body of work over the last decade, but has built a deserved reputation as one of Britain’s must-see live performers.

“He is adored by his legions of fans and his appearance at Scarborough OAT is likely to be one of the highlights of the summer. It is sure to be a night to remember for everyone.”

Will first came to prominence when he won Pop Idol in 2002. He has gone on to sell more than eight million albums worldwide, has enjoyed four number one singles and four number one albums, and has won numerous awards and accolades including two BRIT Awards.

His 2015 album 85% Proof hit number one in UK and had critics purring at his striking vocal performances packed with emotion and “slivers of fragility”.

Cllr Andrew Backhouse, Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture, added: “It’s been a week of fantastic announcements for Scarborough Open Air Theatre and now we’re able to add pop superstar, Will Young, to the mix. The venue continues to play its part in boosting the local economy every summer and showing what a great place the Yorkshire coast is for live entertainment.

“Tickets for any of the shows would make great Christmas presents for friends and family, so don’t delay, get your pick of the seats when they go on sale next week.”

Tickets for the fully seated concert are priced from £29.50 and are available online here or in person from the Scarborough Open Air Theatre Box Office from 9am Monday December 14.

My first dilemma. Closer but there's a lake between the stage and seating. Having allocated seats means not having to turn up early. unsure.gif

Scarborough Open Air Theatre welcomed Will Young to North Yorkshire last week and despite the rain (typical Northern Summer), the crowd rocked their ponchos and danced the night away.

With his five piece live band and backing singers, Will burst onto the stage to open the show with a few tracks from his latest album 85% Proof before welcoming the crowd and cracking a few jokes about his outfit made for him by his late Grandmother and then threatening to jump into the water in front of the stage and asking the crowd if they'd save him if he got carried away and ended up stage diving.

Scarborough Open Air Theatre is a really unique venue, with the stage set on an island in the middle of a lake. It originally opened in the 1930's but in 2010 had a huge revamp and is now one of the most popular concert venues in the UK with acts including Elton John, Boyzone, Jessie J and Olly Murs on the huge list of musicians who have played there.
Every time I've been to the venue, the acts can't help but comment on the lake surrounding them, although I am yet to see anyone jump in!
If you've seen Will play live before you will know how off the cuff and impromptu his shows can be, and the chat between songs can often be the most fun part of the entire concert. It's fair to say he had the crowd in the palm of his hand, even the husbands who had been dragged along were laughing along all the way through.

Will sang some of his most loved songs including an amazing acoustic rendition of Light My Fire and his hit singles Changes, Who Am I and You & I, plus some of his album tracks from over the years. With a makeshift glittery platform which was wheeled on and a few disco lights, Will's infectious and quirky personality shone throughout the show.

For the encore Will burst back on stage on a mobility scooter, complete with flashing lights and a built in keyboard, much to the crowd's delight, who were all on their feet in admiration.
After serenading the crowd with everyone's favourite 'Leave Right Now', Will said his thank yous and closed the show with 'All Time Love' which saw a standing ovation from his adoring fans.

The show was really great, I can't fault Will's voice which was effortless and pitch perfect throughout, it's still clear why he won Pop Idol all of those years ago! His personality and jokes kept everyone smiling and having the best time, despite the fact they were all dressed in the not so attractive ponchos and standing in the pouring down rain for the majority of the night.
