This week's new Alan Walker track is a bit dull and slow, more like the indie electronica that has been so popular this decade than dance music (although I am sure it is classified as dance) I much prefer Move Your Body.

It may not have been his decision, iTunes sometimes reduce songs of their own accord.

Posted by: awardinary 2nd December 2016, 12:32 AM

Sigma is also 59p and so is Alissa Cara too.

It was weird Sigma staying 2 weeks official low top 40 this time, whereas Cry entered higher but dropped like a stone

I would have liked it if iTunes had sprung on the impact that Sia's single Alive had this week as that surely would have given it a big push.

Wonderful Christmastime top 100 (this one seems to be more popular than usual this year on itunes), such a great Christmas tune from the early days of electropop (I really like the synths in it)

I get bored listening to the same xmas tracks year on year especially this early in the month of December, personally I don't know why people download/ streamed year on year, surely they would have got them on their devices from previous years, sorry Jonjo I'm in Scrooge mode at the moment, getting in character. biggrin.gif bah... humbug...

Posted by: Jonjo 2nd December 2016, 10:36 AM

I really hope 'Santa Tell Me' can gain enough momentum to get a top 25 play! I doubt it, but I hope.

Is Sia releasing a new song more or less every other week or something? laugh.gif Hope Imagine Dragons can do well!

Looks like we have a winner of the classic Xmas battle between Mariah and Pogues.

Mariah is being performed by Saara (2nd fave to win) on X Factor tomorrow! *.*

Posted by: Dancember 2nd December 2016, 11:05 AM

It's not even a battle anymore ever since streaming came into effect, Mariah will win every year now.

I think it'd be down to the flow of the xmas playlist. Pogues is one of thos songs which is better closing out a playlist when everyone is shit faced and have a "drunken sing along" to it. Where as AIWFCIY is great at getting people in the xmas party mood!

Posted by: Yorkie3 2nd December 2016, 12:48 PM

The low sales environment seems to really benefit the Christmas songs, Mariah is already top 10 combined and the Pogues aren't *that* far off... If they're boosted by streaming as much as last year I could honestly see both going top 10 officially over the coming weeks! biggrin.gif

I hope Mariah manages to go top ten this year, I imagine she will. Though I do wonder who is still buying the song every year but as streaming is here to stay, Mariah's festive dominance will likely never end.

Is there anything known that's realistically going to threaten Clean Bandit between now and the end of the year? I don't think there are any *obvious* contenders - of course that doesn't mean that something lower down the chart won't climb up.

The main competition I'd say was something performed on the X Factor final. Given it's an original song penned by Ed Sheeran, the winner's single could create some buzz and outdo expectations. Also, if Little Mix perform Touch on the Finale, it wouldn't surprise me if that rushed to #1, given their hype at the moment and the fact they can put on quite the show.

Posted by: Dancember 2nd December 2016, 03:57 PM

I think the X Factor single and the London Hospice Choir are the next two number ones. After that who knows. Maybe Little Mix like Joe said if this Touch song is as good as the fans say it is.

You'd be surprised at the effect of Hot Songs actually! Quite often a new song is featured prominently in the Hot Songs list in week 1, then it's removed in week 2 and it plummets down the chart (see: JoJo's F**k Apologies and Gabrielle Aplin's Miss You). The BRITs exposure is helping too though I'm sure!

This is good for Gaga and great to see she's pulling out all the stops... but if radio don't support her which I suspect they're not going to, won't it be futile?

Still, if she can get another top 20 from this and it helps bolster the album then it's a good thing.

They could be trying to get the album sales up, given it's Q4 and promo appearances usually have the biggest impact on albums at this time of year. The album rose from #21 to #14 last week in the US and has managed to stay somewhat stable despite radio not warming to "Million reasons" and "Perfect Illusion" out of the picture. She has the superbowl halftime show next year as well. Hopefully one of the singles will be picked up with all this promotion the album is getting!

Calling All Hearts had some great funky house production in it but was ruined by the two poppy vocalists on.it.

Do It Like A Dude is still brilliant though smile.gif Easily the best of her songs for me. I remember it took a while for me to warm to it, but when it soared up the chart after she won Sound Of iirc, I was fully supporting it. Expecting her to come up with a similarly edgy sequel and instead it was a massive disappointmemt in the form of Price Tag.

I don't think the London Hospice Choir will get there to be honest, it has to have a huge lead on downloads, its not likely to do anything on Spotify, it will nosedive a week later 2-OUT biggrin.gif as most charity singles do now into their second week

Posted by: Davidson 3rd December 2016, 12:38 PM

She was at #10 again last night, so she's fallen back down to #11.

59p is really helping her. I would imagine she will go back top 10 after X Factor tonight, as they will be using the clips in ad breaks as usual.

Maybe someone like Tiësto will come along and give it the remix treatment it needs.

Five Seconds of Shit have released a new EP, called "Unplugged". I'll update the places on the songs, wonder how high they'll get considering they have a HUGE fanbase.

55. 5 Seconds of Summer - Story of Another Us
57. 5 Seconds of Summer - The Space Between a Rock and a Hard Place
82. 5 Seconds of Summer - Wherever You Are
98. 5 Seconds of Summer - Close As Strangers
102. 5 Seconds of Summer - Lost Boy
113. 5 Seconds of Summer - Tomorrow Never Dies
117. 5 Seconds of Summer - Mrs All American
130. 5 Seconds of Summer - Independence Day
181. 5 Seconds of Summer - Disconnected

Because they're 5SOS fans tongue.gif

Posted by: JosephCarey 3rd December 2016, 05:37 PM

They've released several EPs:

5 Seconds of Summer (B-Sides and Rarities)
She Looks So Perfect (B-Sides and Rarities)
Don't Stop (B-Sides and Rarities)
Amnesia (B-Sides and Rarities)
Good Girls (B-Sides and Rarities)
LIVESOS (B-Sides and Rarities)
Sounds Good Feels Good (B-Sides and Rarities)

^ none of these songs are brand new, it's just b-sides and Target/Japanese bonus tracks, the most popular ones weren't previously available on iTunes hence why they're doing so well individually.

The song seems to get boosted very well by promotional appearances. I'm going out on a limb and saying it'll just manage to get into the top 10, as the 59p pricing should give it a slightly larger boost than usual with the promo appearance.

I think it's a real shame that the album is performing so poorly, but the song was such a bland choice for the John Lewis ad, especially as the album shows that they're capable of producing really amazing music (see Midnight River/Cry No More/Bloodflow) but even I'm surprised that the song isn't higher

I think Radio 1 will show some support for Million Reasons at some point, even if they jump on too late and it only goes C-C-C-Off.

Posted by: iain 5th December 2016, 02:32 PM

It amazes me that radio can't see the potential of Million Reasons. I mean it gets a bit of promo and flies up the charts, always an indication that people actually like the song when they hear it. And yes, I know that X Factor is huge promo, but the impact it has on songs is completely varied (Alicia Keys, Emeli Sande, One Republic etc barely did anything after being on the show).

The same happened when she did it on Carpool Karaoke and it went to no 1 on US iTunes.

They do of course play lots of female singers, but in general I think they're noticeably harsher on females.

Posted by: Steve201 5th December 2016, 09:16 PM

I think on a general basis they avoid giving too much heavy support for unimaginative bubblegum pop and try and over expose indie turned pop acts and try and make them bigger. So for instance they happily jumped on board with Christine and the Queens as soon as Tilted became big and yet the huge James Arthur no1 was B listed. At the same time they played a lot of The Saturdays but not as much as say Pink!

Zara's campaign is such a mess, I have no idea why she's not had her album pre-order up before promotional slots on Children In Need & X Factor. I'm not sure if 'I Would Like' will trouble the top 10, I can see it peaking around #15-22, I love the song but I'm disappointed it's being released as a single especially judging by LQ performances of 'Funeral', 'Permission' and 'Wanna'.

I'm still hoping that 'I Would Like' is not the single that will launch the album, however at this rate we will have heard over half of the album by now.

Robbie is going have a really weird chart run with this. The album is sure to climb back into the top 10 during the week now.

Streaming it hammering this so hard - It's done well on sales (94-14-8-16-20), hopefully it'll be back in the Top 40 this week.

7. Lady Gaga - Million Reasons

upcoming promo :

- Alan Carr : interview + performance (Friday, Dec 9th)
- Royal Variety Show : performance (Tuesday, Dec 13th)

The promo should be enough for a top 20 peak on the official chart.

Maybe on the sales chart. But unless airplay kicks off, and she gets added to some Spotify playlists, she'll struggle for the top 40 officially. It'll be great for the album though.

It is at #6 when combined just now. Say it falls back to around the #10 mark by Friday morning, the Friday performance should get it back into the top 5 and the Tuesday performance should mean that it stays around the top 5 of iTunes for almost a full week.

If it is around #5 or so on iTunes all week I could definitely see it challenging for top 20 officially.

If she still doesn't get any streaming from it then it will struggle for top 40.

Robbie Williams got to around #5 on iTunes with Love My Life, it stayed in the top 10 all week but only went #33 officially.

The added problem Gaga has is that Christmas songs that are low on iTunes could go ahead of her officially as they will have decent streaming and X Factor Final, BBC Music Awards and Royal Variety itself are going to give a lot of artists chances to boost their singles ahead of Gaga.

Posted by: SKOB 6th December 2016, 02:05 PM

It's not like Gaga has ZERO streaming, it's currently #178 on Spotify

Posted by: JosephCarey 6th December 2016, 03:25 PM

No but Nathan Sykes didn't have zero either and only got to #29(?) despite being top 10 on iTunes all week.

Posted by: ❄️awardinicyϭ 6th December 2016, 05:00 PM

This is what really frustrates me about the charts at the moment. It's like there's a clear division of music tastes between the iTunes crowd and the Spotify crowd. There's never consistency and songs that do well on streaming generally get a bigger result on the official charts but not the other way around.

Simply put, the system is broken and unsurprisingly nobody knows how to fix it.

Posted by: SKOB 6th December 2016, 05:03 PM

Or COULD IT BE that the iTunes audience is so much smaller than the streaming audience so that more obscure songs can make top ten

Posted by: twentyonemdh 6th December 2016, 05:08 PM

Yeah, if the threshold for a Spotify top 10 was about 1500 streams (like the iTunes top 10 threshold) things'd be a hell of a lot different.

Is that the case, or is it just that you can't get anywhere on Spotify without being on the curated playlists?

Both.

People who like Robbie Williams are more likely to buy his single from iTunes than stream it on Spotify as his fanbase are generally older.

Same with people who like the new Lady Gaga single as it's more adult contemporary and doesn't appeal much to younger listeners.

It's undeniable though that being playlisted on Spotify is essential for a big hit these days.

Thats why I would like soundcloud plays to count for the chart, that would really boost more obscure songs which would be good.

Regarding the Spotify/iTunes balance, it reminds me of the very early paid download days (2004-05) where there was a clear divide as to what sold well on physical singles and what did on downloads. Older fanbase acts (Erasure/Bon Jovi/Depeche Mode/New Order etc) were shifting tons on CD and getting some of the biggest hits of their entire career with tracks barely anyone remembers now in comparison to their 80s/early 90s heyday, and given the collectability of the CD single in comparison to a digital file they're going to sell way more on the older format.

Similarly some harder dance acts did much better physically than on download - who's going to want to buy a lossy AAC file when you can grab a HQ version on CD or vinyl? I have a memory that DJ Tiesto's 'Adagio for Strings' wasn't available on download at all initially, which might go to explain its odd chart run - only a #37 peak (astonishingly low for what was a massive club anthem of the time) but hung around the lower reaches of the chart for ages afterwards. I didn't go anywhere near iTunes for dance tracks until they increased the bitrate in 2009, sticking to CD singles until then with downloads only for the odd pop or rock track.

Going even further back to the early 1990s, there was almost certainly a divide between which artists sold more on vinyl and more on the new-fangled CD and cassette singles. Part of the reason the era has so many re-issued singles charting so high - other than being used in commercials - was because it was everyone's first chance to own copies of the songs on CD, meaning they could finally bin their knackered old record player...

We were lucky this year. Plenty of songs breaking through. I assume we'll see a top 5 entry from Major Lazer plus there's bound to be some Harry/Louis material to chart, and there's obviously the future hits that could break through, but apart from that it seems a bit dry.
