BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Ed Sheeran - ÷

Posted by: ThePensmith 15th December 2016, 11:04 PM

His social media accounts have all changed to a pale blue square, year on from his hiatus announcement. Amy Wadge who he co-wrote "Thinking Out Loud" with has also confirmed the album is "pretty much done".

And he's also heavily rumoured to be headlining the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury next year. I so need to see him live on this album era! Be good having Ed back biggrin.gif

Posted by: Steve201 15th December 2016, 11:13 PM

A January release would be huge - 6 weeks at the top!

Posted by: sorryislayed 15th December 2016, 11:16 PM

I was quite enjoying having a break from him tbh sad.gif.

Posted by: mr_pmt 15th December 2016, 11:19 PM

I liked the last era way more than I was expecting to, let's see what this brings.

Posted by: 🎄cqmerqn🎄 15th December 2016, 11:39 PM

Please keep it

Posted by: Steve201 15th December 2016, 11:47 PM

If it's anyway decent with hit potential it could sell 200k first week!

Posted by: Cremey 15th December 2016, 11:48 PM

I'm here for something like 'Sing'. The ballads can just DIE please.

Posted by: 🏆award🏆inary 15th December 2016, 11:55 PM

Hope this will be good. smile.gif

I don't think I can cope with another era from him. Don't was his death

Posted by: PAJ88 16th December 2016, 12:37 AM

So what will follow + and X? / or - ?

Posted by: Jonjo 16th December 2016, 12:42 AM

Would love a song as personal and moving as 'Photograph' again. The progression in that song is stunning. Looking forward to hearing what he brings, coz 'x' was a really good album!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 16th December 2016, 01:50 AM

I am looking forward to this, i love his x album, but i prefer the ballads.

Posted by: truly talented 16th December 2016, 05:53 PM

Looking forward to hear what he comes back with. He's grown on me and find him a versatile artist. Admire him for releasing outside the 4th quarter, not that he needs to.

Same here! Didn't like his first album at all (actively hated him at that time, in fact), but 'I See Fire', 'Don't', 'Sing' and 'Thinking Out Loud' were good singles and there were some great album tracks on 'X' ('Afire Love' and 'Runaway' being my favorites).

Posted by: Liаm 24th December 2016, 04:11 PM

x was a brilliant album, one of the highlights of 2014! I did really like + but x just had a lot more to it, I especially love Sing but also Nina, Afire Love, Runaway, Thinking Out Loud, Don't and I See Fire. I hope this one lives up to it!

Posted by: Inna Selez 28th December 2016, 05:36 PM

Hope next year we will hear his new album.

Posted by: Josh. 1st January 2017, 11:51 AM

Really excited for his comeback (yay that it's so soon) because every track on his last album was very strong. I hope it's as good as Don't which has since become his best single ever for me now wub.gif A bit gutted that it's probably going to stop Major Lazer/Nicki from having a chance at the top spot though sad.gif

Posted by: Doctor Mysterio 1st January 2017, 11:54 AM

The singles run of 'x' was flawless, particularly the latter three! Never expected my favourites to be his ballads after aiming for another 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' at the start of the campaign. It often takes a while for his songs to click with me though which I think is why I never actually listened to the album, I should sort that out! Looking forward to hearing this new song anyway.

yes YES YES OMG!!!

Posted by: Liаm 1st January 2017, 02:48 PM

I cannot wait, he's like Adele for me in that I don't get fed up of him even with the overexposure (well, nowhere near as good as Adele). I'd prefer the lead to be something like Sing, Nina, Don't or Runaway rather than One, Photograph or Thinking Out Loud, because he just excels with the former styles but it will be good to have him back anyway.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 1st January 2017, 03:25 PM

Something like I See Fire would be nice, his most underrated song easily. I feel like this'll be like all his singles - I'll think this is 'quite nice' on first listen and then become sick to death of it when six months later it's still all over the radio and in the top 10, surprise me plz Ed~

Now we've got a veritable chart battle going here!

Posted by: Danuary 2nd January 2017, 05:04 PM

really hope he continues his trend of releasing an uptempo as the lead, don't think I could deal with an Ed Sheeran ballad clogging up the chart all year.

I very much enjoyed 'Sing' and 'Don't' so I'm reasonably hyped.

Posted by: Jonjo 2nd January 2017, 09:10 PM

'Sing' & 'Don't' were my least favourite songs from his last album. laugh.gif Or is it just that they're not downtempo that people like them? laugh.gif 'Sing' sounds so much like a Justin Timberlake circa 2003 reject and 'Don't' is hella pretentious and annoying.

Very excited to hear what he can do though! 'Thinking Out Loud' was always a timeless classic and I adore the sentiment behind 'Photograph' so much, it's gone on to become one of my fave songs. I do miss 'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' Ed a little bit though...

Posted by: jase. 2nd January 2017, 09:15 PM

"Don't" was the only decent thing from his last album so I can't say that I'm particularly excited about new music.

Posted by: Dobbo 2nd January 2017, 09:26 PM

I'm the complete opposite here in that I loved his first album but utterly loathed almost everything on his second (only good songs were Don't & Bloodstream).

Been listening to 'x' tonight in anticipation for new music from him and it's reminded me how great a musician he is and now I'm so hyped for new stuff from him. Isn't Ed Sheeran, being an acoustic singer songwriter, more indie, rock and alternative rather than pop, so I thought this would be in that forum biggrin.gif He's not much more pop than Twenty One Pilots and they are in that forum iirc.

Posted by: Liаm 3rd January 2017, 07:21 AM

Ed is in no way indie or alternative laugh.gif Twenty One Pilots are because they have eclectic influences from electronica, rap, rock, indie-pop, hip-hop etc. and they deviate from pop a lot by mixing them all and having their own unique style. Ed is mostly acoustic pop, with a bit of R&B in songs like Don't and Sing. Having a guitar as the main instrument doesn't make you indie.

Adverts during CBB revealed whatever this is is being released at 5am (on Friday of course)!

Ed's been working in the studio with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Rudimental, Nicole Scherzinger, Tori Kelly, Beyoncé, Kygo and Martin Garrix! Bloody hell, should be some ace collaborations on the album - plus the last two hint to us that he is indeed sticking mainstream, might even be going tropical cheer.gif

Just for the record, here're the registered tracks from Ed recently~

21st Century Fox | Ed Sheeran, Jethro James Sheeran & Jaja Soze
Brother’s Blood | Edward Sheeran & Benjamin Levin
City Lights | Jake Gosling, Tayo Jarrett & Edward Sheeran
Fall | Ed Sheeran & Amy Wadge
Follow The Girl | Ed Sheeran, Rupert Christie NEW
Jigsaw | Ed Sheeran & Jake Gosling NEW
Laura | Edward Sheeran & Amy Wadge

Posted by: Steve201 4th January 2017, 11:08 PM

I didn't realise it was on the radio 2 playlist which as you say seems like a more conventional style release. I expect radio 1 will A list it immediately!

Why is he going tropical, tropical house will be finished soon as a chart force anyway (its place is being taken over by future bass)?

Tbf, they could be playlisting the whole album. Just like what happened with Beyonce - Lemonade. I dunno, it probs will turn out to be just one song and a pre-order, but some things are pointing towards this being an album.

He's hosting the BBC R1 Breakfast show tomorrow, to play new music. The fact they say "music" instead of "song" makes me think its ab album laugh.gif

Posted by: Danuary 5th January 2017, 10:30 AM

Ed Sheeran is probably one of a few people who could pull off releasing a whole album at once without there being a lead single, he'd probably get about half his album in the official top 40 with streams and cherry picking!!

This is what I'm finding most intriguing, everywhere is just saying "music" which is very vague, so it could well be an album after all. Time will tell I guess!

Posted by: Liаm 5th January 2017, 01:06 PM

Yeah those sound like two different intros as if he is teasing the album rather than the song, I am really thinking it could be the album ohmy.gif It could just be album pre-order and a single as the instant grat with the other song just being a different teaser for the album, but it's the "music" rather than "song" that's really raising my suspicions.

Posted by: mdh 5th January 2017, 06:21 PM

Looks most likely that he's releasing at least two tracks tomorrow, very excited although it'd be a shame if this lack of sole focus on a song means he misses #1.

Posted by: Jonjo 5th January 2017, 06:36 PM

Very excited. The first one sounds like it could be quite anthemic similarly to 'I Will Wait' by Mumford and Sons. The 2nd one reminds me (ever so slightly) of 'Be Alright' by Ariana mixed with a bit of 'Cheap Thrills'! (Tropical influence but not a tropical song)

Posted by: Envoirment 5th January 2017, 07:30 PM

Looks like it'll be the whole album going by what's being said/those teasers! Guessing it's 5am 6th January so it can be released everywhere WW at the same time?

Posted by: Tinasha 5th January 2017, 07:40 PM

What is the likelyhood of a duo single release tomorrow?

Posted by: Liаm 5th January 2017, 08:03 PM

Perhaps it's the album pre-order with an instant grat album track and a single?

Posted by: mr_pmt 5th January 2017, 08:03 PM

If it is a single release, they've done really well to not let a title be known up to 4 hours beforehand.

Posted by: Jonjo 6th January 2017, 12:27 AM

He could be doing what Drake did with 'Pop Style' and 'One Dance'? Throwing more than one option out there and seeing which one sticks?

But yeah. I don't think this is an album anymore!

Posted by: cqmerqn 6th January 2017, 01:20 AM

The single is called Shape Of You

Posted by: cqmerqn 6th January 2017, 01:24 AM

I saw a tweet on twitter which put Cheap Thrills on top of the teasers of the song and it sounds identical!

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🕊 6th January 2017, 04:38 AM

Dual release. "Shape of You" and "Castle on the Hill" are out now.

Posted by: Cody Lightwood 6th January 2017, 05:36 AM

"Shape Of You" sounds like it's going to be really big

(so naturally i will love it and buzzjack will hate it)

Posted by: Tinasha 6th January 2017, 07:30 AM

Shape of You sounds really good! Funny he's gone tropical, the same as the rest of the pop world, the general public will still see it as 'real music' though. Castle on The Hill sounds like a U2 track, not a fan.

Posted by: mdh 6th January 2017, 07:52 AM

It's very barely tropical, but still tropical. Shape Of You is brilliant!

Posted by: mdh 6th January 2017, 07:59 AM

Castle on the Hill is also great.

Posted by: J▲hq 6th January 2017, 08:12 AM

Shape Of You sounds off-puttingly similar to Cheap Thrills when it starts, but I'd forgotten by it by the end of first listen. I think it is the better of the two, catchier for sure, but I really enjoyed both so subject to change!

Slayed that he's given us two tracks that have different vibes from each other, and neither are a Boring Out Loud!

Posted by: Liаm 6th January 2017, 08:15 AM

I definitely prefer Shape Of You as well, Castle On The Hill is great too but I think it will be more of a grower. If the power of the last 30 seconds was the whole song it'd be my favourite of the 2, but it builds nicely. Shape Of You is such a tune, it definitely succeeds in being bang on trend with the tropical influences but it's still got everything that makes me love an Ed Sheeran in it so it doesn't feel like like a jump the shark moment just to get an easy hit.

Sia WISHES Cheap Thrills was as good as SOY tbh.

Posted by: common sense 6th January 2017, 09:13 AM

Shape Of You is really good and catchy chorus.

Anyone been listening to him on R1? Wondering if he's said when the album will be out. It'll be huge but not as big first week sales as Adele obviously.

Posted by: Atonement 6th January 2017, 09:37 AM

I don't like 'Shape of You'. Maybe it will grow. I hate the chanting after the chorus, which sound too much like 'Speeding Cars' by Walking on Cars. It also annoys me in the lyric video that the girl is holding the same phone as the boy lol, with the text balloons on the wrong side.

'Castle on the Hill' is definitely preferable for me at the first listen although it doesn't set me alight either.

Posted by: Rossco 6th January 2017, 10:02 AM

I'm liking the sound of both so far however castle on the hill is the more instant track for me. Hoping shape of you will grow on me.

Posted by: *Tim 6th January 2017, 10:33 AM

Shaoe of You sounds more The Greatest than Cheap Thrills to me melodywise. I absolutely love it, already up there with Don't and A-Team

Goddamnit Rih tho, she coulda have this smash for herself

Posted by: Danuary 6th January 2017, 10:35 AM

Shape Of You sounds massive. Impressed with it myself anyway, and the other one isn't bad for what it is.

Posted by: Liаm 6th January 2017, 10:43 AM

Reading what he said about it, I don't think he actually sent it to Rih in the end so we can excuse her ass.

But tbh I hate Rih for letting so many smashes get away from her in the past years. 'Timber' (This one I'm OK with as it's awful), 'Lean On', 'Cheap Thrills' (the one I'm most pissed about as I think it fits perfectly fine on ANTI and would've been her 15th US #1) and now possibly this? That bitch.

Although can you really picture Rihanna singing the lyrics of 'Shape of You'? It sounds nothing like what she would be singing about. I wonder why he wrote this with her in mind?

Posted by: Hayzayy 6th January 2017, 11:09 AM

Castlle on the hill sounds great on first listen, I love the lyrics and the pace, nice number!

Shape of you is a total "Cheap thrills" rip-off instrumental wise, it's basically the same intro. I'm always suprised how big acts can come up with such obvious rip-offs laugh.gif

And the press is already on it : http://metro.co.uk/2017/01/06/ed-sheeran-drops-two-new-singles-and-everyone-reckons-one-sounds-just-like-sias-cheap-thrills-6364530/

Posted by: Tinasha 6th January 2017, 11:18 AM

It's fine though, it's still its own song. The similarities in the intros are quite striking but the song itself is very different.

Posted by: Cameron 6th January 2017, 11:26 AM

I feel as though Castle On The Hill needs some form of clapping or a guitar taking the lead on the chorus. Shape Of You really is reminding me of Sia in terms of the instrumental. I do feel both tracks just need a bit more oomph in the chorus

Posted by: Jack 6th January 2017, 11:30 AM

Shape Of You is good but the instrumental sounds very cheap? It's so off putting. I actually think I would like it if it had a stronger instrumental/voice. Shoulda stayed with Rihanna.

Posted by: burbe 6th January 2017, 12:24 PM

Shape of You is definitely sounding the better of the two songs! I don't really hear Cheap Thrills, it sounds much more like The Greatest. In fact that are VERY similar instrumentals. Castle on the Hill sounds decent and will probably be the grower of the two!

Posted by: Jonjo 6th January 2017, 12:32 PM

So I'm in the minority it seems and prefer 'Castle On The Hill' to 'Shape Of You'? laugh.gif

'Castle On The Hill' seems pretty anthemic to me. Absolutely brilliant! 'Shape Of You' reminds me of 'Cheap Thrills' (mixed with a bit of 'Be Alright' by Ariana) also, but without the personality of it.

Both tracks are at least very good though. Really excited for his album!

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th January 2017, 12:49 PM

I'm not really sure which one I prefer out of the two yet but I'm really liking both, they offer something different from his usual style I think which is great. Shape of You definitely gives me Sia teas with the instrumental like everyone's said but I don't think it's any kind of rip-off, the song as a whole is nothing like Sia. Very impressed anyway, hope they can both get a turn at #1! laugh.gif

Casttle on the hill is so amazing wub.gif
I feel like it's going to be completely overshadowed by Shape of you though sad.gif

'Castle On The Hill' is winning the Youtube Views! ;D

'Castle On The Hill': 1,013,790
'Shape Of You': 948,502

Posted by: Jade 6th January 2017, 02:13 PM

Very pleased with these new singles! Both strong, though 'Castle On The Hill' has the edge for me.

Posted by: jark 6th January 2017, 02:37 PM

Shape of You is sublimely well produced. I don't feel it's too close to Cheap Thrills. Feels like it could be a great 'driving at night' banger.

Castle on the Hill is going to be gobbled up by UK audiences too. He done good.

Posted by: seltinpixmile 6th January 2017, 02:52 PM

I prefer Castle On The Hill, I wish the chorus was more powerful.

As you say the instrumental in Shape Of You is a beat cheap.

Posted by: 🚡🚟🍥-b 6th January 2017, 03:07 PM

Shape Of You just following the overused tropical house style production but at least the vocal is good.

Castle On the Hill is better a decent indie rock style song, we haven't seen much indie rock in the charts recently so it is refreshing

Posted by: andibob 6th January 2017, 03:24 PM

I didn't hear Cheap Thrills at all on first listen as the songs are different different overall. Had to go back and give the intro a listen once you lot said it. Very similar intro until the vocal kicks in.

Posted by: Josh. 6th January 2017, 04:56 PM

Only heard SOY three times and COTH once but definitely enjoying the former the most of the two so I'm glad that it seems to be the most likely to hit #1 out of the two, another great change in sound after he surprised us all with Sing and it's already got in my head with the hook. COTH was nice enough on first listen and I'll have to give it a bit longer to settle in but it wasn't one of his best at all, I probably prefer every other track on the 'x' album but I'm way more familiar with them so maybe it's a bit early to write it off already tongue.gif

Posted by: mr_pmt 6th January 2017, 05:55 PM

I can't hear 'Cheap Thrills' in 'Shape Of You'. I can see it as having a very vague tropical influence but it sounds organic and like it's completely him*. I'm quite impressed!

*Unlike for example what Maroon 5 recently did.

Posted by: mdh 6th January 2017, 07:22 PM

OBSESSED NOW. What a f****** amazing track!

Posted by: Cody Lightwood 6th January 2017, 07:24 PM

I love seeing Ed experiment with styles different from his own. "Shape Of You" seems a bit generic at parts but it's so new for him that I think we'll give him a pass. I'm surprised everyone isn't hating it upon first listen though. "Castle On The Hill" seems like a grower, I can agree with that, and it's more within his comfort zone than SOY but it's still really nice. That break has done wonders for him.

Posted by: Liаm 6th January 2017, 07:32 PM

I think having played them a few times throughout the day I prefer Castle On The Hill now. Both are pretty much equally great but it really is anthemic.

Posted by: Taylor Jago 6th January 2017, 07:45 PM

"Castle On The Hill" definitely has the edge for me right now. "Shape Of You" is quite good too though.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 6th January 2017, 10:16 PM

OK, fair play, I'm actually quite impressed with both of these. I agree Shape of You sounds like an experimentation but it's one that suits him (I actually hear Cold Water more than Cheap Thrills in there) and wayyy better than Sing ever was. Castle on the Hill sounds VERY U2-esque but that's certainly not a bad thing in my book~

I mean they're not favourites and I could still get sick of them a few months down the line, but at least he seems to be going somewhere with his sound rather than rehashing past glories.

Posted by: Ryan. 6th January 2017, 11:13 PM

Castle On The Hill is Ed's best song ever comparing first listens, fantastic lyrics, so anthemic with a wonderful nostalgic feel. This is the sort of song I imagined Taylor would release when I read her new album would be "alternative rock"-infused. Shape Of You is more generic but I'm still a fan, and perhaps it will actually have more longevity as Castle On The Hill's emotional pull wears off the more you hear it. We shall see but it is two fantastic tracks from Ed that are immediately amongst his best ever, my heart is with Castle On The Hill though! heart.gif

Posted by: slowdown73 6th January 2017, 11:16 PM

Shape of you is bit bland and boring. Castle on the hill is way better but im not a big Ed Sheeran fan at all. He's way overrated.

Posted by: Tinasha 6th January 2017, 11:50 PM

Shape of You is quite the bop. I've had it stuck in my head all day, easily one of my favourite tracks of his with Photograph.

Unlike others here, the lyrics what put me off Castle on the Hill. It reminds me of 7 Years in the way that it pulls on the heart strings using nostalgia as a technique. I really hate he part when he describes what his other friends are doing. 'One's already on his second wife, One's just barely getting by.'

Posted by: Cremey 7th January 2017, 12:12 AM

I've never been a fan (although I liked 'Sing') but I'm loving these two singles.
Easily his two best for me already!

Posted by: Dobbo 7th January 2017, 11:37 AM

Shape Of You sounding very good actually. The other one not so much, sounds like a Mumford & Sons song (which is almost never a good thing).

Posted by: Cucumberella 7th January 2017, 11:50 AM

both of the songs are actually okay but they're not anything new nor special, shape of you sounds like a soundcloud song by a barely signed / unsigned artist that is decent but rly never takes off, castle on the hill has been done before with the nostalgia and general feel and the lyrics being overpoignant

I agree with this, the lyrics are off-putting and not good.

'Tasted the sweet perfume of the mountain grass' is a personal favorite of mine for how cringeworthy it is. How quasi-deep sick2.gif

I feel like I'm going back to disliking Ed like I did during his first era.

Posted by: Andrew. 7th January 2017, 04:00 PM

Castle On The Hill might be one of my favourite Ed songs already ohmy.gif Shame it's doing the worst out of the two songs. Shape Of You is horrific, so bland imo. It's already smashing though so fair play to him I guess laugh.gif

Posted by: jase. 7th January 2017, 04:27 PM

Well, I'm surprised! I normally can't abide his music but I actually like both. 'Castle' is far superior imo.

Posted by: Bré 7th January 2017, 05:15 PM

Really like both of these, 'Castle On The Hill' has the edge for me, the chorus heart.gif has potential to be one of my favourite Ed songs! It doesn't sound anywhere near as much of a hit as 'Shape Of You' though so a bit surprised it's doing nearly as well so far, expecting it to fall away fairly quickly a la Drake's 'Pop Style' while 'Shape Of You' continues to smash.

'Shape Of You' sounds so much like Sia's recent hits as literally everyone has said ~ but it manages to sound on trend while not being exceedingly basic (I mean I do still love both 'Cheap Thrills' and 'The Greatest' so sounding like them isn't a bad thing) so I'm on board with it at the moment.

Posted by: ThePensmith 7th January 2017, 05:27 PM

Loving both of these so far, but "Castle on the Hill" does have the edge for me too. The chorus and the build up to it is just amazing, I could already picture festival crowds going nuts for it in the summer. And I love that it's about his hometown as well! In fact yesterday on our local news bulletin (I'm in Essex, so about an hour or so away from Framlingham in Suffolk, where he's from), they did a piece in Framlingham where they were playing it to residents and local school kids and they were all kind of proud and patriotic of their own, and I love that.

"Shape of You" has its charms too. I can see why he originally wrote it for Rihanna as it's got her sort of beats and feeling to it!

Posted by: mdh 7th January 2017, 07:57 PM

Both of these tracks are EVERYWHERE right now. Heard them multiple times in the shops and on car radios etc today, I can't seem to escape them laugh.gif Definitely very rare to see a song have such a big buzz around it - certainly can't remember an instance like this in recent memory!

Practically all of last year with One Dance wink.gif

Posted by: gooddelta 7th January 2017, 08:37 PM

I'm liking both of these. Shape Of You is relevant and a huge smash, will easily be one of the year's biggest sellers.

Castle On The Hill is great because I love the idea of a song about growing up in Suffolk that sounds straight out of 2004 (specifically like Irish Son by Brian McFadden) becoming a global smash!

I've been following Ed since 2009 and it's just bizarre to me how big he's become. I wish his old friend Leddra Chapman (who I discovered at around the same time) had achieved one tenth of his success drama.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn 8th January 2017, 03:00 AM

Shape Of You: I really don't like this, it's so bland and repetitive and sound very similar to Cheap Thrills by Sia.

Castle On The Hill: This is 100x better than Shape Of You. If Ed is going to rule the top 2 for the next few months then I'd rather this be the no.1. The same concept of 7 Years though laugh.gif

Standard album tracklist, confirmed on Facebook:

1 Eraser
2 Castle On the Hill
3 Dive
4 Shape of You
5 Perfect
6 Galway Girl
7 Happier
8 Hearts Don’t Break Around Here
9 New Man
10 What Do I Know?
11 How Would You Feel (Paean)
12 Supermarket Flowers

4 further additional tracks to come on a deluxe edition too smile.gif

Posted by: AV102 11th January 2017, 11:24 PM

Shape of you is much better for me it's such a bop

Posted by: gooddelta 12th January 2017, 11:41 AM

This will be out 3rd March according to Music Week.

The titles of the deluxe tracks are:

13. Barcelona
14. Bibia Be Ye Ye
15. Nancy Mulligan
16. Save Myself

I really hope Galway Girl is a cover, a version of it made top 75 here somewhat unexpectedly in 2008 (despite being a huge No.1 in Ireland) but deserves to be much better known in the UK.

Posted by: liamk97 12th January 2017, 11:58 AM

We won't need to worry about low sales for the #1 albums this Spring then! biggrin.gif I feel like Ed could quite easily beat Take That's first week sales with his third week sales - Take That will have strong sales but I imagine lower than they are used to, probably not even over 100k.

Posted by: gooddelta 12th January 2017, 12:10 PM

Yeah, Ed could potentially go 500k+, 200k, 100k and Take That will open with about 60-70k max this time I suspect.

Posted by: Hadji 12th January 2017, 12:12 PM

Ed for 2017 best-selling album I'd say and well over a million sales, 1.5m+ in fact.

Posted by: Tinasha 13th January 2017, 02:20 PM

Castle On the Hill is #1 on airplay this week. I'm pretty sure this is the first time an on air sale song has debuted at #1 on the airplay chart. Maybe Hello did too, but I think i remember it going 2-1...?

Shape of You is also #5. He really is gearing up to Adele heights. Shape of You may debut on less sales than Hello, but I assume if he released just 1 single, the sales would have been a bit higher.

Posted by: Noahspike 15th January 2017, 03:12 PM

Multiple plays later and 'Shape Of You' is yet to make any sort of impression on me, and despite the sentimentality throughout 'Castle On The Hill', it's only the chorus that resonates. That chorus is properly gorgeous though <3 and it's exciting to witness the scale of his chart dominance with both tracks regardless.

I much prefer Shape Of You at the moment, but my issue with both songs is I felt like we have been there before, they are a bit too very generic and cliché, which I guess is good for pop, but I don't know, I was expecting more. They could be Sia and Lukas Graham (Blurgh!!) songs.

It's surely too far adrift on sales and streams to catch up, even with the promo/video etc...

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd January 2017, 07:26 PM

Tbf, from what I have read, 'Shape Of You' was the last song he did for the era and almost gave it away to someone else, but Ed played it to the label as a "surprise" and the label jumped on it and obviously got him to keep it for himself! So, I think COTH was always meant to be the lead single and SOY just seemed to have happened!

Had he kept SOY out of the company's reach and never played it to them, I think he would've just released COTH instead as opposed to two new songs like he did!

EDIT: Oh and I can already envision all the Buzzfeed type articles swooning over the video laugh.gif

Can't reveal sources, but I can confirm that Galway Girl is not a cover of that Galway Girl. It's an Ed Sheeran original, performed with Beoga, an Irish band. Haven't heard it myself, but my Dad has, and says it is an original, and thinks it will be huge.

One of the lyrics is "She played the fiddle, and came from Ireland, and fell in love with an English man". They are definitely not in the original!

Instant Grats are a thing now... so it's not because of SOY "dying" at all. It might not even be a single lmao.

Confirmed to be just an instant grat:

You can buy them standalone but it will automatically appear on the album for people who have pre-ordered the album. For that reason I can't see it going to number 1!

In what way is 'Shape Of You' dying?? unsure.gif

Posted by: Tinasha 16th February 2017, 01:42 PM

I'm shocked at how unoriginal this sounds. It makes SOY and Castle sound like total masterpieces in comparison.

Posted by: gooddelta 16th February 2017, 02:03 PM

Oh, so this is the track where he attempts to recreate Thinking Out Loud...right down to the similar production and being track 11 on the album laugh.gif

Wise move to showcase three very different sounds from the album but yes, it is very derivative. I suspect it will become his next classic million-selling love song though, and it's pretty clear that he wrote it exactly for that purpose.

It's pleasant though.

Posted by: Bjork 16th February 2017, 02:48 PM

sounds like classic ed, surefire #1

Posted by: mdh 16th February 2017, 04:57 PM

Oh my days this is SHITE. Laughably horrid.

Posted by: Liаm 16th February 2017, 05:56 PM

It's nice but yeah it's just a Poundland TOL that's the lazy, easy hit.

Posted by: Jonjo 17th February 2017, 02:30 AM

It's "nice" but that's all. Strong filler imo. It really doesn't sound much like a hit at all. Well maybe if this was the 90's, but I really can't imagine it now. TOL had much more to it. A lot more power and a hook that catches!

Hopefully this dies off towards the end of the week, once those that have ordered the album have got their copies or whatever.

Predictions for opening numbers of the album?

300k pure? 400?

Posted by: Jonjo 20th February 2017, 09:19 AM

The label are expecting at least 250k! I think we're looking at nearly DOUBLE that tbh.

Posted by: Tinasha 20th February 2017, 09:20 AM

Yeah, I think we're looking at 500k+, there's a prediction thread in the chart forum though.

Posted by: BridgeCow 21st February 2017, 10:51 AM

Apparantly he's debuting a new single at the BRITS, and he also said 'we', so collab?

Posted by: BigMixer 21st February 2017, 11:20 AM

600k at least.

Posted by: cqmerqn 21st February 2017, 11:35 AM

I'm thinking that it could beat Adele now.

Posted by: burbe 21st February 2017, 11:45 AM

I'm really intrigued to see the collab ohmy.gif Hopefully someone inspired!

There's no way Ed's getting close to 800k. ~500k is most realistic I think, with it being less frontloaded than 25 in the longer term.

Posted by: mdh 21st February 2017, 12:19 PM

Do we not think the fact that 5 songs will be available for purchase by the time the album gets a release will kind of marr his pure sales a bit? I mean, there'll probably be people that don't bother buying the album because they already have a fair few songs. Probably won't make too much difference but I reckon it'll still take a few k away from his total.

I really want it to be Taylor, perfect way to keep her career ticking over until she gets round to a new album and Taylor is good at keeping things super secretive just like Ed. I'm sure it'll be someone less interesting though~

I see there's a Tedder song on the album and Taylor has worked with him a lot recently for 1989 so we can hope!

Posted by: gooddelta 21st February 2017, 04:31 PM

It's not like Ed and Taylor haven't collaborated before though. Their stock is much higher now of course but it wouldn't be THAT unexpected a collab.

...doesn't give any hints to who the collab is with! At the moment I'd say New Man is likely to be the collab, as far as I recall Ammar Malik has wrote songs for The Vamps recently, kinda indicating a pop track? And I bet the collab is a pop track. The title also seems perfect to be a collaboration. Look into it how you please.

Posted by: Liаm 22nd February 2017, 11:45 AM

They're probably hiding a credit for whoever the collaborator is, if it's someone like Taylor who'd most probably have a hand in writing it or a rapper who'd do their own bit of a verse. New Man could easily be a sort of two part duet with Ed like "she's got a new man I can't move on" and Taylor singing about the new guy I guess laugh.gif

I am expecting to be disappointed by it being Drake or The Weeknd or someone like that, but I'll blindly hope for Taylor *.*

Do you all tend to pre-order the Deluxe edition? I hate paying £1.99 postage and the standard is the one most supermarkets stock so usually just get that. Mind you think my daughter's got Amazon Prime as she got it half-price as a student so if she still has it she can order me the Deluxe. I've heard rumours that Ed's getting sued for Castle On The Hill due to similarities of Lukas Graham's '7 Years'. Would be great if it is true smile.gif

Posted by: Liаm 27th February 2017, 12:57 PM

That would be utterly ridiculous, they just have similar themes. Loads of songs do... Then again Lukas Graham seem up themselves enough to think that they invented h concept of nostalgic songs.

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th February 2017, 03:00 PM

I very much doubt this would happen, they wouldn't have a leg to stand on as beyond some similar themes, they're totally different tracks.

Posted by: JosephStyles 3rd March 2017, 02:33 PM

Really enjoyable album, enjoyed it a lot more on second listen actually as the songs started to stand out individually to me. Hearts Don't Break Around Here is my favourite of the new songs, not getting enough love on here. Galway Girl, What Do I Know? and Supermarket Flowers are my other faves on the standard album, plus the first three deluxe tracks are all solid. I think it's a more consistent album than x actually!

Posted by: Bibia Be Ye Ye 3rd March 2017, 02:33 PM

Personally I think it's better than x. It's a lot more distinctive!

Posted by: jakewild 3rd March 2017, 02:50 PM

galway girl is a bop tbh

Posted by: Queen LeQueefa 3rd March 2017, 02:51 PM

Perfect is really basic and like an Adele rip-off.

I get Ed Sheeran wants to be the male Adele, even with the album title theme, and makes real music, buut it's not the same quality.

Posted by: Dexton 3rd March 2017, 02:52 PM

It's a well-rounded album with some very catchy songs, however, he doesn't seem to experiment as much as he could have in my opinion and is basically just repeating what worked well for + and x. A few songs are very Ed Sheeran if you know what I mean. That's not a necessarily bad thing though, and it is what's to be expected these days.

There's some very strong songs, but there's also some pretty mediocre ones too. It just seems very straightforward for the most part...predictable almost. How Would You Feel is very Thinking Out Loud, and What Do I Know? is a more upbeat Love Yourself. Dive is possibly my favourite from the album right now, and even that reminds me heavily of his collab with The Weeknd, Dark Times.

Posted by: Queen LeQueefa 3rd March 2017, 02:54 PM

Agreed! The whole album is Sheeran by numbers. I'm not impressed.

Posted by: gooddelta 3rd March 2017, 05:24 PM

There are certainly very few risks here, but he's very savvy. He knows that the follow-up to x would be huge anyway so probably wants to capitalise on it by making the whole thing as accessible/mainstream as possible to take his star even higher into the stratosphere. I think the next album will be more risky and different to all the others, once he's had that 21-esque era he's obviously craving with this album.

Even though a lot of it is formulaic though, it's still very strong to my ears! And still way more interesting and varied to listen to than a lot of albums by mainstream popstars.

His bonus tracks are better than a fair amount of his standard tracks! It's a good album. I liked 'x' a lot more though, but this is growing with each listen so far!

Haven't listened to every song yet, but I am LOVING Galway Girl. Some of my friends (who wouldn't be pop fans to be honest) aren't fans, as it's not a "pure" traditional song. But I love it. Perfect combination of pop/RnB and Irish trad that reminds me of home. I played the fiddle for 10 years growing up in the Gaeltacht, but am definitely more of a pop music fan. This song is exactly the sort of thing I would have loved to have played along with!

Really liking this album so far. Of the new - not heard til today - songs I'm loving Galway Girl, New Man and Supermarket Flowers (i think he could've picked a better title for the latter however; it really doesn't do it justice)

And I don't get why Ed thinks Perfect tops Thinking Out Loud ! *scratches head*

Really liking this album on the whole! The quality dips a bit when it gets to 'Hearts Don't Break Around Here' and the two after that ('How Would You Feel' is still falling to make a real impression on me) but then picks right up again at 'Supermarket Flowers' which is a real stunner heart.gif 'Galway Girl' and 'Barcelona' are right bops, yay for the brief Spanish part interjected in the latter *.*

I need more listens for a full rate but my top 5 of the album atm:

01. Castle on the Hill
02. Galway Girl
03. Barcelona
04. Supermarket Flowers
05. Shape of You

'Perfect' and 'Eraser' are definitely up there as well. The lyrics for the former are adorable <3

I agree, it's not as instant and I don't think it will be half as big. I suppose he's trying to self hype it and almost make himself believe that he's managed to write a song to top that.

Don't get me wrong, I think Perfect is great, but Thinking Out Loud is such a classy and classic soul track and Perfect is...well, a strong boyband song!

Full album Rank

07.5 Eraser
11.0 Castle On The Hill Still My favourite this era so far!

Such a solid album overall! How Would You Feel is my least favourite but still good I guess I dont like it much for being a carbon copy of Thinking Out Loud

I listened to the Radio 1 Album Party this morning and whilst everything I heard was quite pleasant, nothing really stood out to me. It is very formulaic and songs just morphed into one another (at first I thought Radio 1 were skipping songs but I'm pretty sure they weren't). I'll give it a few more listens and take what I like from it, but I don't think it'll be one I return to as a whole, nor will it be making me officially an Ed Sheeran fan (I thought I was being totally won over by his two singles, but it seems that was just a "two-off"(?)).

Galway Girl & Nancy Mulligan, my top two Ed Sheehan tracks.

Maybe it's the Irish elements.

I would disagree here. Two of his songs are heavily influenced by Irish tradional music. Like when or how has that ever been used in mainstream music recently? That is definitely changing things up and is certainly a risk for a worldwide album where this music would never have been experienced.

My top 5 so far after a few listens [not counting previously released singles]

1. Galway Girl [this should be the third single]
2. Barcelona [great effort trying to sing in Spanish!]
3. New Man
4. Strawberry Flowers [am I the only one who couldn't stop crying after first listen?]
5. Eraser

not into Perfect yet...

On those two songs I agree with you - and that's why I said it's more varied than most mainstream pop star albums - but most of the rest of the album follows the formula of + and x. His pre-fame EPs are generally more experimental, particularly No.5 Collaborations Project.

I'm glad Galway Girl is the most popular album track as there are FINALLY glimmers of hope that something other than tropical house can do well on Spotify in the future and we may just have some variation back in the charts. I hope it encourages other artists to take risks and try their hands with different genres instead of just following the tropical/future bass pattern to get a desperate hit.

Yeah, it just shows that a track doesn't necessarily need to be trend-hopping or generic to be popular, Galway Girl is as popular as it is because it's different, and a genuinely great track. Nearly everyone I've seen on here and in real life loves it and the large majority of those people I'd never associate with delving into Irish Folk influenced music.

Posted by: Rooney 4th March 2017, 01:12 PM

Galway Girl is the best track. SO catchy and it's definitely different to what is in the charts at the moment. Instantly my favourite.

I think it's a really strong album, definitely can tell he is going for worldwide success, and I can't blame him. But I think the album is actually quite experimental at the same time as not being entirely alienating. There are bits and pieces for everyone.

I really like the deluexe tracks, I think they're probably stringer than some of the album tracks. How much does that Yibba (can't remember it's full name) sound like Crystal Castles? Such a good up-tempo feel to it.

There is no way Ed wouldn't at least co-write every song, that's the kind of artist he is. He writes his own stuff and that's a lot of the reason for him doing music, to make his own songs. He co-produced a fair chunk of the album too (Eraser, Shape Of You, Perfect, Hearts Don't Break Around Here, What Would I Know?, How Would You Feel, Supermarket Flowers and all the bonus tracks).

Played the album to my partner today who reckons much of it is quite samey (have to agree that some of the ballads do kind of blend into one another, although that may just because they are new to my ears).

The most amusing comment, however, was being asked whether or not the into to Barcelona featured guest vocals from Rolf Harris!! rotf.gif rotf.gif rotf.gif

Well I must say am I pleasantly surprised by a lot of what I've heard from this album! Those Irish folk inclusions are both brilliant and definitely show a unique side to the album, Galway Girl in particular sounded fantastic on first listen. There were a couple of others that sounded good too & potential to be growers.

There's still a bit of the old dirge loitering (Perfect, Supermarket Flowers & the worst of all How Would You Feel) but overall this is a far superior album to x (thank heavens).

I've given the album two spins so far and, whilst there is some filler that should be subtracted [some of that boyband-esque tosh in the name of Happier, Hearts Don't Break Around Here and How Would You Feel (Peen)], I find much of the album instantly likeable. The uptempo songs are the highlights, they are more interesting and more unique; and the deluxe edition songs are far, far stronger than the songs I've listed above that made the standard edition. The sequencing of the album is, for the most part, a mess; and some much needed rearranging of the ordering of the tracks is necessary. I'm enjoying it on the whole, and it grew on me the second time around in comparison to the first listen; but it is not as strong as x or +.

I hope that his next album will be more experimental. It's a shame because his pre-frame EPs showcase his individuality more; they are more diverse and cover a wider range of genres, particularly No. 5 Collaborations Project. He should delve deeper into his acoustic-meets-urban roots, and combine that with some grime and dance music on his next record alongside stronger, more meaningful lyrical content. With the exception of Dive, which is glorious -- and though I enjoy Perfect -- the bland lovelorn balladry on here really bogs the record down. Galway Girl and Nancy Mulligan are in particular a refreshing change of sound, and tracks like Eraser, New Man and Barcelona are more in line with the direction that I was more of the album was in. The songs are well written, strongly sang and slickly produced on the whole but he's not fulfilling his full potential as an artist here.

I've picked up on some complaints around other music forums about his business-savvy attitude and chart-thirsty comments in recent interviews making him seem unlikeable, and I agree. He needs to learn how to be selective with what he says. In his defence, you don't stay this successful with such a huge demand without some idea of how to manipulate the business; however, he should let the music speak for itself and allow his artistry to shine more. I believe that many people would think his commercial greed is quite an unattractive trait for an artist to have. He is in the position where he can afford to experiment with his music more as he did with his pre-fame work. I hope he takes that opportunity with the fourth album.

I post regularly on UKMIX, where comments have been made from several users there. I think there is the same consensus with a few users here at Buzzjack too. You definitely aren't the only one.

One user on UKMIX claimed that, in a recent interview, Ed said that artists who underperform and don't sell as much, trying to be more independent with the direction of their music, are stupid and that he keeps listening to his label and others around him to remain one of the biggest artists. I don't know which interview they're talking about nor do I know if those were the words he used or whether what he said has been taken out of context. However, it's a line with other chart-related comments he's made during this album campaign. It's disappointing to hear as a huge fan because he's capable of doing so much more with his music than being a manufactured label puppet. Stay humble, Eddie.

I am no longer surprised by how disappointed I was with the trash commercial album he made. He is overproduced and using aong writers and obsessed with the chart - after claiming he didn't care one time!! - especially with him ignoring artistrt.

Posted by: JosephStyles 5th March 2017, 02:31 PM

Why shouldn't he care about the chart? Every artist on a major label surely does, Ed's just being more vocal about it.

Posted by: Liаm 5th March 2017, 02:34 PM

Exactly laugh.gif He knows he can sell, why not capitalise on that. It's like he's sold out by producing an EDM album, the songs still feel like him. The thing about him only writing four songs is obviously BS anyway, I think it would just ave been a site like Josepvinaxia collating the artists we knew he was working with on certain songs, and posting that as an incomplete list of credits. There is no way that Ed would release an album he had not much of a hand in crafting.

Because it is stupid. Have we seen how fickle the music industry is these days. Lady Gaga produced one of the most sublime debut albums and everything else since has never been as well recieved. Why? Because she went full Gaga and alienated a lot of the casual fans. Sure she is still successful, but is she kept churning out huge pop anthems for everyone of all ages she would be so much bigger. Acts will always have fanbases, but it is is the casual music lovers who lead artists to full-blown success. You have a chance to go down in history as one of the 21st centuries biggest artists.. sorry, but you don't turn that down.

I would say Ed has experimented with this album, but at the same time he has stayed true to what has worked for him previously and what radio listeners and streamers love. Safe chart-friendly music. I can think of way more artists that have unsuccessfully experimented rather than successfully experimented and still had great to excellent success. You experiment gradually. Clearly his label know how much of a worldwide success he is, so they have been very careful to craft him that way.

Posted by: ThePensmith 5th March 2017, 11:11 PM

I really don't get where all this supposed "backlash" has come from to be honest. Typical British attitude and tall poppy syndrome, storm in a teacup if you ask me. So he wants to succeed and do well? Good on the man. As he has said himself, when you get to the crazy levels of success he has, you are bound to change. But his ethos and his approach to his music has never been in question for me. I'd still take him over your Biebers and Drakes any day. The album is quite wonderful as well - just really consistent from start to end. 'Perfect' and 'Supermarket Flowers' are my favourites.

Posted by: Klaus 6th March 2017, 12:57 PM

I liked both 'Shape of You' and 'Castle on the Hill' but I never fully warmed to them, especially not in the same way as the entire world has apparently done so. I just listened to 'Galway Girl' though because, why not, and its fantastic, I already prefer it to the two singles! It'll definitely be another smash for him.

Will need to listen to the full album soon, and actually listen to X whilst I'm at it too because I never got round to it despite adoring 'Thinking Out Loud', 'Bloodstream' and 'Photograph'!!

I didn't mind his first album, didn't care much for the second and I think this one is pretty dire. Formulaic and unoriginal, and I'm already dreading the fact that I'll be hearing 'Galway Girl' everywhere for the next six months.

Well that's typical, and considering he's made albums +, x and ÷ it seems inevitable that we will get a "Minus/Subtrct (-)" album next.

Any other guesses on an album name? wink.gif

I think it's all but confirmed that the album will be called - (Subtract).

I hope his fifth album is titled x=(-b±√(b2-4ac))/2a (The Quadratic Formula) just to teach the whole world a bit of slightly more challenging math equations. *_*

Posted by: awardinary 27th June 2017, 04:38 PM

What about π (Pi) ?

Posted by: Logged in as: 27th June 2017, 04:39 PM

I think something like % would be a more probable fifth album title tbh

Posted by: liamk97 27th June 2017, 04:43 PM

Ed Sheeran saying he's going to do an "acoustic" record left me the same reaction as when Taylor Swift her next album (1989) would be her first "pop" album.

Posted by: ThePensmith 27th June 2017, 05:16 PM

Am I the only one baffled by the sudden backlash he seems to be on the receiving end of? Ever since that interview he did for GQ just before the album came out, the press seem to have been on their 'tall poppy syndrome' agenda and him having to justify using his loop pedal on stage at Glastonbury that he has used since before the first album even came into being is the icing on the cake.

I can't think of anyone less deserving of all the bile. I can see why he took his leave of absence from social media for as long as he did!

I hope after subtract he releases a greatest hits and call it Bodmas. (/X+-)

Perhaps unsurprising following all the Glastonbury/last few months backlash...he's quit Twitter: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/jul/04/ed-sheeran-twitter-abuse-trolls

I know it's easy to say 'Fair game and he should expect it with his level of success', but regardless of your level of status no one deserves the sort of flack he's copped.

I wouldn't be surprised if his hiatus between this album and next is even longer than the one following the 'X' era.

Posted by: Joe. 5th July 2017, 08:45 AM

Was his backlash even that bad? Surely it was nowhere near as bad as what female popstars have to put up with?

Posted by: danG 5th July 2017, 08:53 AM

Well he has been way too overexposed so I'm not surprised that there is some level of backlash. He needs to go on at least a 2 year hiatus at the end of this year.

Posted by: gooddelta 5th July 2017, 09:00 AM

He's only human and I do feel for him. Twitter can be a vile place, especially when fan communities turn on one another and target other artists. He doesn't deserve the personal abuse he gets and it would be hard for anyone to cope with it, hopefully he will be alright.

But at the same time he's been so overexposed this year that I was sort of waiting for some sort of backlash - even some big fans of his (as I am) are starting to get a bit tired of seeing and hearing him absolutely everywhere all the time. Plus I guess it doesn't help that before Divide came out he was starting to come across as slightly arrogant and more like a businessman calculating his every next profitable move, rather than being the endearing artist he seemed to be five years ago. He's obviously a passionate musician and incredibly talented, he should let the music speak for itself more. If the music is as good as he keeps saying it is then it will sell itself.

I was going to say, I've not heard anything remotely bad about him in the media. It seems more to me like he can't do no wrong, whereas the likes of Taylor, Katy, Britney, Gaga are always on the receiving end of backlash and absolute social media bile.

I totally agree, I mean people are going to say negative things about everyone, especially someone as overexposed as Ed. But people like like Katy at the moment who's experiencing the worst kind of comments online (people are even publishing think pieces about how awful she is!) And what Britney and Gaga have been through in the past with droves of deeply misogynistic shit he probably has it quite easy in comparison, he's literally the public's #1 at the moment.

Are we taking this as the 4th single? I know What Do I Know? was planned, but maybe they've changed their minds, or maybe its just a non-single video? I love What Do I Know? and was very happy with that single choice but Bibia Be Ye Ye is absolutely perfect for summer and is a guaranteed mega-smash. I never thought they'd make it a single as its a deluxe track but it was always an album stand-out for me.

Perfect has been added to Hot Hits so watch it smash!!

Great choice of next single by the way. The perfect for the time of year!

Posted by: Jonjo 22nd September 2017, 10:05 PM

Yeah. This is gonna be the ultimate wedding song I reckon. But great choice. It's one of just a couple that I'm not completely sick of! It's really sweet. I can see this doing similarly to 'Photograph' in it's 2nd chart life. Not quite going top 10 (the 2nd time), but it's gonna be around for ages.

But then again it could always be the 'All Of Me' of this year.

I still think Perfect reallllly feels like something Westlife or Boyzone would have released in the late 90s, so dated and straight from the Steve Mac 'boyband November ballad' production line. Not that I don't like it though, but only Ed could get away with making something like this a hit in 2017!

Posted by: TheGhostPensmith 16th October 2017, 11:36 AM

I See Fire and Photograph were literally the worst. Even the Kygo & Feliz Jaehn remixes (respectively) couldn't bring them to anything more than mediocre. Thinking Out Loud remains a great song but it's one I never find myself going back to.

I don't mind the song but it's so cheesy, like Westlife could have had a #1 with it in 2002 laugh.gif Thinking Out Loud at least felt a bit timeless, like it had a bit of a 70s vibe to it, however boring and overplayed it got.

For exactly the same reason every other artist in history laugh.gif Why settle for one #1 when you can get two? If this remix pays off (which it doesn't even need to really, Perfect has been amazingly successful in reaching the Top 10 again) then it just goes to show how strategic and strong his marketing team is. Say what you want about Ed, he knows how to run an album campaign.

Perfect for me has grown a lot as I've heard it on the radio lately. I enjoyed it on the album but I generally gravitated towards the more upbeat songs and shrugged Perfect off along with Happier/Hearts Don't Break Around Here - however this does stand up there with Thinking Out Loud now. A decent, non entirely trend chasing remix and some live performances and it could easily go #1. Hopefully after Rita Ora has bagged at least one week there though laugh.gif

Tbf, he's done everything but receive the "Christmas Number 1". So, depending on charity tracks and stuff, I would imagine that's kinda what they want to go for. laugh.gif

Posted by: Jonjo 1st December 2017, 02:10 PM

The production on the original has much more oompf. But it's really nice to hear Beyoncé on a pop hit again. Especially as it reminds me of 'Avé Maria' by her and that's one of my Bey faves.

It's nice, but not really exciting.

Same again why wouldn't you want to get Christmas #1? It's not as if he's forcing these people to listen and buy the new Perfect remix. The charts are nearly always manipulated and the X Factor have been releasing their winner's single year after year close to Christmas to get the #1 so last year was the first in a long time that the Christmas #1 had not been manipulated.

Katy Perry had like 3 or 4 tagged on remixes in her Teenage Dream era and Little Mix regularly do the same so it does happen throughout the year too!

Posted by: mdh 3rd December 2017, 05:27 PM

every artist releases remixes, yeah, but not all artist release high-profile new versions of the song and give them a push ALONGSIDE the original. my point is that him and his team are promoting two versions of the same song, essentially giving the song an advantage over all others.

Posted by: D0bz 3rd December 2017, 05:30 PM

Nothing stopping other artists doing that though. Rita could drop a remix of Anywhere if she wanted, not that'll stand much of a chance against Ed & Bey of course but it's not like it's against the rules for everyone but Ed to try it!

It's just annoying when you buy an album and then after you buy it, they made a re-mix of one of the singles and then release it. Luckily with streaming these days it is less of an issue but I still find it annoying.

I actually really like the Divide album and I loved the latin remix of Shape Of You because it wasn't the main version of the song but I found the Perfect remix annoying, it's like they just brought Beyonce on to make it a hit as they are both big names.

If they re-work New Man and make it different then I might like it but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I'd go for Not3s or Kojo Funds personally, they seem like they'd work better on an upbeat, summery-ish track than Stormzy would and they're both pretty big!

Posted by: Dexton 23rd February 2018, 04:14 PM

He could even re-release the entire album with features/remixes on every track. There’s already official Beyoncé (Perfect) and Stormzy (SOY) releases so a full album of remixes could work well, of course then led by Perfect and the next single. He said he recorded a duet too, which I would presume to think “duet” as like a feature on a ballad (eg Happier) rather than a guest rapper.

Not3s and Kojo would be welcome additions to me wub.gif

"Galway Girl" has been sent to US radio as the fourth single there, after "Shape of You", "Castle on the Hill" and "Perfect". I expect a new single from him to be released overseas, although it was implied that "Happier" will be the next sometime in spring. I'm not sure if this plan is still going or not.
So... "Supermarket Flowers" has been sent to UK radio through HitDisc compilation this week. I'm not sure if they are going to release this officially as the next single or it will be like "How Would You Feel (Paean)", which was also included in the compilation following its release as an instant grat last year.

The blog Ultimate Music has thrown it out there that apparently 'Happier' is the next single!

So Smooth Radio ran a listener's poll recently for the greatest song of all time. They counted down the Top 500 songs... and Perfect won kink.gif

Not one of the most soulless and bland songs of the past 12 months apparently being the best song ever laugh.gif

You have to laugh really :') I like the song but it's not Ed's best or even close, let alone the best song ever laugh.gif

How tragic. Not just Perfect but that top 500 in general. MOR central.

And Radio X suddenly don't have the worst results for a best songs ever countdown by a radio station in 2018.

Acoustic version of Happier released today, actually better than the original tbh kink.gif

Has anyone else been to see him at his stadium gigs?

I saw him in Glasgow. Tbh I found it quite disappointing, it felt like a stadium was too big for just him and his guitar. He should’ve had a band and more of a ‘show’ in my opinion.

I said that after watching him headline Glastonbury last year

When I saw him at the O2 I was more amazed at how he managed to command 20,000 people with just a guitar for 90 minutes, it's very impressive and didn't work against the show at all for me!

I saw him at Wembley and after seeing gigs at other stadiums (mainly The Etihad) I think some venues just make the atmosphere. I thought he was really good, the sound was on point, albeit I had more than a few drinks.

And 'Perfect' managed to re-enter the Top 40 last week thanks to it being on SCR.
