BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Avril Lavigne - Head Above Water

Posted by: Theo. Feb 8 2018, 04:48 PM

Avril posted on Instagram last night about her new music which will be her first in five (!) years since her self-titled:

QUOTE
I'm so f***ing pumped. Waking up so excited. February is a great month. I've started mixing my album and all of the pieces are finally coming together. These songs are so close to my heart. Wish me luck while I throw every last drop of me into these final stages.
Time is power. And I needed this time. To live. To write. To go through my ups and downs. And while I am eager to get this done ha I've finally learned to enjoy the journey, the ride, the present time.

Looking forward to hearing what she releases, "Rock N Roll" was great but the rest of that era was far from peak Avril. She has a lot to reflect on with this album so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a something good (and presumably soon!)

Posted by: cqmerqn Feb 8 2018, 06:18 PM

Wonder how she’ll do chart wise. Could do a Paramore [Hard Times].

Posted by: Bjork Feb 8 2018, 06:24 PM

the lead singles from the last 2 albums were very poor imho
and she totally lost me as a fan with the duet with chad kroeger
also hopes she shows some evolution/maturity, she cannot keep pretending like she's still 16

Posted by: Scene Feb 8 2018, 06:50 PM

Her second album was fab back in the day and she's had a handful of 00's classics, hopefully this big break has allowed her to grow rather than repeating the WTH/HTNGU theme.

Posted by: Dexton Feb 9 2018, 06:36 PM

Hyped for this, I was a big Avril fan back in the day and enjoyed some of the previous albums singles (bar Hello Kitty which killed her reputation a bit). Her sound changed a lot which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I would it if she want back to her more punk pop rock sort of sound - but more mature of course. A Paramore type comeback could be amazing

Posted by: Juliano Feb 9 2018, 07:42 PM

I'm here for it. What The Hell is still one of mine and my best friends iconic jams and personally I enjoyed Here's To Never Growing Up, Smile and Wish You Were Here. As long as we don't go down the Hello Kitty route we are cool.

Posted by: UltraReputation Feb 21 2018, 12:23 AM

Seems like news about new music might finally be coming after so many false starts! I'm so ready 😍

Posted by: Jade Feb 21 2018, 12:25 AM

Her first three albums are all-time favourites of mine and 'Goodbye Lullabye' was decent too. Hope she comes back with a bang to make up for the eponymous album being so underwhelming (and housing her worst ever song 'Hello Kitty' *shudders*).

Posted by: Midge Feb 21 2018, 01:08 AM

I need to make a playlist of her singles discography and remind myself of how much I enjoyed her!

Posted by: Tombo Feb 21 2018, 04:44 AM

I'm here for some Hello Kitty-esque tracks as it is one of her best songs!

Posted by: Jack Feb 21 2018, 10:57 AM

Rock N Roll was a 10/10 bop tbh.

It was an absolute 11/10. wub.gif Her best moment by a clear mile.

I actually really liked her last album! A lot of it I really enjoyed and it had lots of highs (obviously the Chad Kroeger duet and ‘Hello Kitty’ were not two of them).

Posted by: JosephSprayberry Feb 21 2018, 12:37 PM

The first three albums are her best three but the latter two have their moments too, notably What the Hell and Rock N Roll wub.gif

Hard to pick between The Best Damn Thing and Under My Skin as her best though, both brilliant and have loads of memories attached!

Under My Skin is definitely better than TBDT! It's one the best albums ever! Goodbye Lullaby is also super underrated, such a beautiful record.

Posted by: Joe. Feb 21 2018, 01:24 PM

Rock N Roll and What The Hell are her best overall songs.

Under My Skin would be my favourite of her albums.

Posted by: John-James Feb 21 2018, 01:46 PM

I'm shocked to see Rock N Roll get so much praise here. I love it personally but I had no idea it was so well liked. Shame it flopped.

She's been posting a lot on instagram about shooting a music video etc so hopefully we'll hear something soon biggrin.gif

Love the new single a lot more than I first thought and her vocals have really improved. I’m here for her again. Album 6 already better than the last two based off Head Above Water.

Posted by: Andrew. Sep 20 2018, 04:38 PM

Her last album is so underrated. sad.gif There are a few absolute stinkers but it has more highlights than any of her other albums imo, Rock n' Roll, 17, Let Me Go, Bad Girl and Hello Kitty (not sorry x) are up with her best. And 'Give You What You Like' has grown so much into one of my all time favorites from Avril, what a gem wub.gif

Hello Heartbreak & Hush Hush

Posted by: Conderella Sep 22 2018, 11:12 PM

The Avril essentials list came up on Apple music the other day and I had a nice throwback to 15 years ago. Those first two albums will hardly ever be topped. Still amazing and aged so well!

Posted by: Juan Carlos ⚡️ Oct 1 2018, 01:59 PM

The album is also called Head Above Water and it's slated to be released later this year. Other songs to be included in the album, besides the title track, are "Birdie", "Crush", "Dumb Blonde", "I Fell in Love With the Devil", "It Was in Me" and "Warrior".

From https://www.umusicpub.com/us/Artists/A/Avril-Lavigne.aspx:

QUOTE
On her sixth full-length album and debut for BMG, Head Above Water, Avril Lavigne holds nothing back. Over the course of the record, she details each trial and tribulation from a perspective of triumph and emerges stronger than ever before. You're hearing the songstress as she was always meant to sound. "This is me and my fight," she affirms. "Head Above Water tells my story."

From http://www.musicweek.com/labels/read/it-s-a-really-sweet-spot-bmg-s-hartwig-masuch-on-its-recorded-music-strategy/073872:
QUOTE
Of course, BMG's strategy is based on signing artists who still have a physical music audience. As well as success with Kylie Minogue this year, the company previewed a big Q4 with releases from The Prodigy, Seasick Steve, Cypress Hill, Echo And The Bunnymen, Avril Lavigne, Richard Ashcroft and Boy George & Culture Club.

Posted by: KWEEN_DEE Oct 1 2018, 09:42 PM

“I Fell in Love With the Devil” should have been the title

Posted by: Theo. Oct 18 2018, 02:55 PM

Billboard have said in their interview with her that the album won't be out until early 2019.

Posted by: Wreatheo Dec 9 2018, 11:23 AM

I love the artwork but LMAO at her font being inconsistent across all three releases this era 😂 The pre-order goes live on Wednesday and should confirm the release date

Tracklist:
1. "Head Above Water"
2. "Birdie"
3. "I Fell in Love with the Devil"
4. "Tell Me It's Over"
5. "Dumb Blonde"
6. "It Was in Me"
7. "Souvenir"
8. "Crush"
9. "Goddess"
10. "Bigger Wow"
11. "Love Me Insane"
12. "Warrior"

Posted by: allfiredup93 Dec 9 2018, 01:14 PM

I’m hoping she doesn’t go for Feb 1st release date. There’s a lot being released that week and don’t want to see it get lost in the other releases.

Posted by: Jack Dec 9 2018, 02:40 PM

Love that artwork!

As much as I love 'Head Above Water' as a song, I do hope we get a few uptempo in the vein of 'Rock N Roll' - she really does shine in them!

Posted by: allfiredup93 Dec 12 2018, 07:37 PM

Tell Me It’s Over is out now along side the pre-order! Out Feb 15th!

Nicki Minaj? Oh Avril. It all started so promising with the first single sad.gif

Posted by: Prettylittlebry Feb 12 2019, 05:07 PM

Dumb Blonde definitely has that cheerleader anthem feel to it.

Actually quite catchy, can imagine people shouting “stand up everybody” in the clubs!

Although I feel this will ruin the feel of the album as a whole. Maybe as a stand-alone release this could work

Posted by: Liаm Feb 12 2019, 05:10 PM

My god, this is TERRIBLE rotf.gif Embarrassing.

Posted by: JosephAvery Feb 12 2019, 05:12 PM

Anthem, much more classic Avril than the last two songs! Shaping up to be a great (and varied) album.

Posted by: Prettylittlebry Feb 12 2019, 05:18 PM

Only going by snippets but it sounds so out of place between Tell Me It’s Over and It was In Me.

Posted by: La Vie En Code Feb 12 2019, 05:52 PM

This belongs on The Best Damn Thing and honestly I’m not mad lol

Posted by: La Vie En Code Feb 12 2019, 05:55 PM

okay but why does that “I ain’t no dumb blonde” part sound like this I’m screaming

Posted by: myxxd Feb 12 2019, 05:56 PM

well those are the kind of songs she's well-known of. not surprising she's back to this kind of sound.

Posted by: dannjohn Feb 12 2019, 07:35 PM

After the incredible self titled album, this track is awful.

Posted by: Bjork Feb 12 2019, 07:45 PM

nooooo Avril, how can she fall so low, a song with Nicki Minaj
and sounding like she did 20 years ago like if she still was 16

what a disappointment after this era started so promising

Posted by: lewistgreen Feb 12 2019, 08:28 PM

Oh my I LOVE IT

Posted by: Envoirment Feb 12 2019, 08:51 PM

I kinda like it - I wish the chorus wasn't so harsh though production-wise. It sticks out like a sore thumb based on the snippets of all the other songs from the album.

By far the worst thing from this era so far.

Nicki ruins everything she features on in my opinion.

But even so it’s so out of place on the album, like the Rude Boy of Rihanna’s Rated R

Posted by: TheGrinch Feb 12 2019, 11:40 PM

It's terrible

I don't think age should dictate what she releases. I think at this point in her career, Avril knows she isn't gonna get big hits so she's just doing what she wants.

BOP, but I don't see how this fits in with the album really based on the previews laugh.gif Nicki's feature is very bog standard and unnecessary as well.

This seems the opposite of that though. It sounds completely out of place judging by the previews of the album. The Nicki feature and the fact it appeared out of nowhere suggests the label pushed for it.

i don’t have an issue with anyone making music at any age of any sort, but an artist at 34 singing about the same issues when she was 22 with shoehorned features and songwriting do make you question if it was part of avril’s artistic vision or was pushed by the label.

Dumb Blonde sounds like some crappy reject from Bonnie McKee's 2015 EP.

Posted by: Queen Rosemary Feb 14 2019, 06:55 AM

After a pretty decent comeback in "Head Above Water", this new one pretty damned atrocious. Sounds like it could've been written by (and for) a 10-year-old. Oh dear sad.gif

Agreed, it just seems like that she's being pushed to replicate that Girlfriend/What The Hell/Here's To Never Growing Up kind of sound as that's pretty much all she's had hits with this decade. She can't really peddle the same things as 12 years ago again and again that we've heard 50 times already, especially when the song is as terrible and obviously shoehorned as this. I guess that is just my opinion but... nah just doesn't sit right with me.

Not even going to give it a listen now. 2 shocking tacks since..

I Fell In Love With The Devil is beautiful

Posted by: Prettylittlebry Feb 15 2019, 11:02 AM

Quite a few strong tracks.

Dumb Blonde is definitely out of place on here.

Such an empowering album

Posted by: TheGrinch Feb 15 2019, 11:15 AM

The album is number one on UK iTunes ohmy.gif

It would be nice to see this debut in the top 10, she's up against FGL in America so she has no chance of debuting at #1 but I can see her debuting between #6-10 in America too. 'Dumb Blonde' really needs a video asap though.

Posted by: crazycatlady Feb 15 2019, 12:20 PM

I think its one of her best albums for a while. I don't think she'll ever release another let go or under my skin, but this one is really good...ignoring the disaster that is dumb blonde of course laugh.gif

Posted by: Dexton Feb 15 2019, 01:24 PM

The whole album is like acoustic slow jams then Dumb Blonde comes out of absolutely nowhere rotf.gif I think it would've fit better between Bigger Wow and Love Me Insane but still sticks out like a sore thumb... It's nice having a classic Avril rocker-ish song on the album but she really needed 1-2 more just so it doesn't feel so unbalanced

Also Nicki Minaj does not belong on an Avril Lavigne album

Posted by: Envoirment Feb 15 2019, 09:09 PM

Avril sounds the best she ever had on the album. It's a really solid and beautiful album except with "Dumb Blonde" sticking out like a sore thumb. laugh.gif

Posted by: 365 Feb 16 2019, 03:01 PM

For me it’s easily her worst album.

This performance ...

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Feb 16 2019, 03:22 PM

The thing about 'Dumb Blonde' is, I love the verses but seriously hate the chorus. sad.gif

Posted by: dannjohn Feb 17 2019, 10:39 PM

‘It was in me’ is beautiful. The whole album is great bar DB which is annoying. If she has to do songs like that ‘what the hell’ or ‘heres to never growing up’ capture the soubd better.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Feb 18 2019, 07:18 PM

I kinda like the sound of this album aside from Dumb Blonde.

It’s better than her last two albums for me, although her first two are untouchable but still her best album since 2007!

It’s obviously coming for that 9-79 OUT chart run though unless there’s major promo or a hit single.

Tbh though outside of this forum and her fanbase which most of have unfortunately most likely grown apart from her I don’t think people are aware she has new music out. The vast majority of people will not know she even released music last year. I mentioned it to my friends and they were all like she hasn’t released anything in years and none had even heard Head Above Water the single!

Posted by: ___∆___ Feb 18 2019, 08:51 PM

^^This - is she even bothering to come to the UK to promote?

Posted by: Jordan Lee Feb 19 2019, 01:07 AM

I hope she does any promo would be good but it’s probably gonna end up performing like Xtinas last album which weirdly was her first album in 6 years too!

If I wasn’t on this forum so much new material would pass me by though but unfortunately for Avril no matter how good the album is if there’s no word on her actually having new music out it’s not gonna sell past week one sad.gif

Even promo isn’t everything like Ariana had no promo last week like she wasn’t actually on UK TV but everyone knew she had an album out even sweetener didn’t have much promo UK wise apart from a BBC special and radio one but again there will have more money behind those than Avril especially as I seen she was everywhere on streaming sites I only have Apple Music but my full insta and Snapchat feeds were people listening to her on Spotify. It’s a TV boost Avril needs If Head Above Water got an X Factor or Graham Norton slot last year I think it could’ve went top 40 (the single). I’ve not seen a single post or video share re Avrils new album though.

Posted by: blacksquare Feb 19 2019, 10:57 AM

It's a shockingly dull album and unremarkable in every conceivable way. The production, the cliche lyrics and themes - there is nothing here.

It's insane to think she's had almost twenty years in the industry and this is the best she can come up with.

Posted by: Prettylittlebry Feb 19 2019, 02:30 PM

#5 in midweek chart

I’m going to guess #8/9 by Friday.

Posted by: Alberto! Feb 20 2019, 12:07 AM

I've listened accidentally to Warrior right after Head Above Water and I felt like I had listened to the same song twice XD

Posted by: Cqmerqn Feb 22 2019, 06:54 PM

Officially a top 10 album!

Posted by: Andrew. Feb 25 2019, 09:54 PM

Down to #34 in the midweeks, I thought it would make like Liberation and fall to like #90 or something so pleasantly surprised, I guess kink.gif

On the album itself, I feel the general response online is very harsh. Yes it can be a bit but samey and there’s filler, but it’s still a solid album. Head Above Water is the only real Avril MOMENT on it though I’d say.

10 Head Above Water
09 Birdie
09 I Fell In Love With The Devil
08 Tell Me It’s Over
08 Dumb Blonde
07 It Was In Me
04 Souvenir
07 Crush
05 Goddess
08 Bigger Wow
05 Love Me Insane
06 Warrior
