Interested in this for sure! Looks like a laugh.

Is anyone watching this? Spot on with the humour laugh.gif

Posted by: Klumzee 15th January 2019, 08:58 PM

One of my friends is an extra in this so I've been watching since it premiered! Just finished episode 4 and it's off to a good start! All three of the main characters are really likeable and on the whole it's quite a relatable show even if it's glamorous and Americanised as anything.

Maeve wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

Posted by: Liаm 16th January 2019, 01:38 AM

Seen the first two episodes and this is great! Really funny but there's a lot more to it than just a "lol sex lol gross xxx" childish comedy so I'm invested in the actual stories and characters and relationships already. I'm really impressed compared to what I thought this would be *.*

Asa Butterfield is beautiful and Connor Swindells is hot af too <3 Maeve is brilliant and the actress is surely a future star!

Posted by: Iz~ 16th January 2019, 04:27 AM

I've been watching it too, up to episode 5 at the moment. Very idealised and with archetypal characters but most of them are still funny and relatable. Especially the main three, Otis's escapades all feel so familiar with some of my experiences of school (I wrote high school at first there which just shows how this show puts you in an American mindset despite being 'British'), Eric seems like the nicest kid with the worst luck in being liked, and Maeve is a brilliant presence whenever she's on the screen - funny, smart and super hot.

I've seen the first 4 and I'm really enjoying it so far!

This was brilliant! heart.gif Many laugh out loud moments, and I felt invested in many of the characters very quickly.

I finished this in like 2 days and I'm already sad I'll have to wait however long it is until S2. I'm IN LOVE with Eric, he's so sweet. Gillian Anderson is amazing like always and Eric and Adam hooking up in the final episode was kind of predictable but I loved it anyways. Gives me a bit of a Mickey/Ian from US Shameless feel. I loved that the atmosphere was so unclear with references to the 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s in both character clothing and music. Been listening to "Love Really Hurts Without You" by Billy Ocean on repeat since it was featured on this haha.

Posted by: Klumzee 16th January 2019, 10:31 PM

just finished episode 7 and I'm so in adoration of all three main characters! All three are incredible actors who've really embodied their characters and! Having to resist watching the last episode now as I need to go to bed but I can't wait to watch the last one heart.gif

Also shout out to Aimee who is low key becoming one of my favourite characters, she's hilarious in every appearance she makes laugh.gif

Love Aimee laugh.gif

”I’ve been wanking all night, I ate four packets of crumpets and I think my clit might fall off” rotf.gif

(In response to Maeve being called a slag) “Yeah you’re right. But so am I” (triumphantly turns and walks off) / Maeve: “I’m not a slag” / Aimee: “Me neither, but it sounded good.” :’)

Finished this and I miss it so much already </3 It's one of those shows where you're invested in all of them, even the smaller characters like Ruby and Olivia and Lily who only really mattered to the story for an episode or two felt like it wouldn't have been the same without them.

Adam, Otis, Maeve and Eric were all incredible though, especially Maeve wub.gif She deserves everything, queen. I've got a real soft spot for the tortured troubled bully types like Adam (see Mickey in the US version of Shameless being by far the best character).

Also I found Lily funnier than Aimee, both icons though, her alien fanfic rotf.gif

Lily is also a great one! Although she's a more obvious funny character imo - I love how she's so blunt about everything but not in a nasty way. Both the scenes she tries to have sex killed me laugh.gif

I sound like a right teenage fangirl but I'm shipping Otis and Maeve so hard laugh.gif I get the feeling it will happen and won't work out so idk if this stage is the best currently. But both actors play them so well and it seems like such a genuine teenage romance that it's feeling all too relatable. Also I wish Adam's storyline was played out a bit more - he had the odd moments of vulnerability and one-liners but I think they could've done so much more with him - his and Eric's moment should've happened way earlier in the season so we could see how the dynamics of that relationship worked out for longer.

Overall I'm so glad this series is in my life and it's become way more than I ever thought it would be to me. Can't wait for season two and I know that's going to be so long considering this has only been out for 6 days laugh.gif

Thoroughly recommend anyone to give this a watch if they're unsure!

I thought this was a movie oops

Posted by: Iz~ 18th January 2019, 11:43 AM

I've also finished and miss it bad. Great little short series. Got to be behind Lily as being the funniest, I started out thinking Aimee was pretty bad though I admit she made up a lot of ground in the last couple of episodes, ever since she started wanking basically. Lily's stories were hilarious, and that she actually went to the effort of making COSTUMES when trying to lose her virginity was crazy funny.

I'm super torn on whether I want Otis/Maeve or Otis/Ola. I mean in the end it's obviously telegraphed to be the former (unless they subvert that) but Ola's cute and self-confident and legit enough that I quite like her, so it'll be interesting watching that develop next season. Show doesn't have enough (developed) straight guys to pair off all of its straight girls with!11!!!! Literally only Otis and Jackson and the latter's a bit of a smarmy bast*rd. He reminds me very much of Hayato from Oregairu, this popular, outwardly lovely guy, whose character arc is basically him privately admitting to other characters that 'I can't stand having to be this perfect all the time'. Oh, I suppose there's Steve too but aside from being oddly mature what did he do? Also on that note, I agree with Klum that Adam/Eric should have happened earlier in the season, his stuff about not getting aroused by girls was dealt with in the first couple of episodes and for whatever reason that didn't immediately telegraph him as gay to me, so I only realised right as it was happening, and I'd have liked to see more Eric being happy over him endlessly suffering with the events that people keep throwing at him

I still don't see him as gay though, I think it was important that they dealt with his arousal issues early on because it offers the explanation that it was his mind that was preventing him rather than not being attracted to women. I think they're going down the route of him being bisexual which is so important, especially for a guy as I feel like men get the whole "you're just gay" thing far often than girls do so I'm hoping they do that justice and don't just fall into the easy trope of "oh he's gay now" which is what usually happens. I'm kinda dreading that storyline for that reason or he'll not be able to accept it, therefore cause Eric more pain and yet again depriving viewers of a happy storyarc for an LGBT character that they can identify with. The fact it's a Netflix show gives me the slightest bit more hope that they will be aware of the sort of implications handling this badly could have though.

also i'm in love with maeve

I’ve seen the first three episodes and loving it so much, the characters already feel so familiar and are brilliantly played.

I’ve also never found anti-abortion protesters so funny - weirdly my highlight so far!

Just finished re-watching. What an excellent series this is is. wub.gif

This was so much stronger than I thought it would be when I first heard about it. I was worried I'd now missed the target audience but thankfully it's nothing like trashy American teen dramas. Although I shouldn't have doubted it with Gillian Anderson and Asa Butterfield. The rest of the cast is absolutely BRILLIANT too and perfect for their character. I particularly love both Maeve and Ola, Otis to randomly have a polyamorous relationship with both tbh

I like that the parents play quite a big part of the show, and you see the different parenting styles and how this can affect the teenagers.

I'll say it again but the strongest part of the show really is the characters. All of them feel so well developed early on and often not necessarily fitting into the usual stereotypes (or not using as much of the stereotypes if they're in that role e.g. jock, nerd). There's not one I dislike which really is rare!

It's so much better than it needed to be! It pays a homage to college dramas but also does something really different and it kept it modern, without it being forced.

Really enjoyed S2, probabaly On par with the first season so it didn’t disappoint at all. The use of the minor characters and side storylines really is the highlight of the show
The only part I didn’t like was Eric’s storyline, feel like it could’ve been done and especially ended a lot better

I liked the storyline between Ruby and Ottis, was quite a nice storyline! I really wish the overall ending was better though but I’m guessing that it’s building towards S3

Posted by: linds 21st January 2020, 02:48 PM

Finished this earlier and I've got a lot of thoughts...

On the positive side, Jean was by far the best character and her storyline was probably the one I was most invested in. I loved the friendship she formed with Maureen and I still think her and Jakob are great together (the plot twist in the final episode is probs one of the only things that will make me want another season from it just to see how that turns out). I love Miss Sands as well but wish we saw more of her tbh. Aimee and Steve are probably the most underused characters but among the most likeable. I have to applaud them on the amount of LGBTQ+ representation they included this time around, we near enough had the full spectrum, I was particularly impressed with how they included an Asexual character as well! My fave moment of the season was all the girls coming together to help Aimee on the bus, genuinely heartwarming to see and that whole episode with them in detention was actually well done too, reminiscent of the #metoo movement etc.

HOWEVER, there's a lot I didn't like about this season unfortunately sad.gif the most prominent thing is how unlikable almost all of the characters had become? Idk if that's just me but I found Otis to be horrendously annoying, Maeve spent the whole season being moody af (but not in her original edgy way), Ola is just annoying as well, Eric wasn't too bad but Rahim deserved better than what he gave him and really should have been the one he picked. I appreciate that Adam is one of the characters that's having to do the most growing from season one but they really should have focussed on that in a way where he was doing it on his own, for himself and learning more about who he is. That would have been so much more interesting to watch instead of pushing this will they/won't they thing with Eric. I don't believe this whole you'll accept yourself when you can hold another man's hand in public shite they had going on. Even if they were gonna end up together, they should have had it happen further down the line when there's no doubt that Adam is right for Eric. Otis was actually right there, Adam was abusive to him for years and still has a lot of growing up to do whereas Rahim couldn't have been more lovely towards Eric, was proud to be with him and treated him right so I'm sad they didn't get the ending I wanted. Although I'm glad Adam started to recognise himself as bisexual and we didnt get the stereotypical "am I straight or am I gay?" Storyline although I think they could have handled it better. The same goes for Ola identifying as pansexual like the two of them formed a good friendship, that was the perfect opportunity to have those two characters explore exactly what those two terms meant to one another as a means of educating people watching who might not know the difference etc but no we got the standard "oh so you're into pots and pans and shit" joke. Idk I just think they missed a good opportunity there. I always thought Ola was openly pansexual though but this season framed it as a newly discovered thing? I could just be remembering wrongly though. Ola and Lily... I don't hate it but it seems random as f*** and there was no build to that pairing at all really? And the way Lily just shut down for a good few episodes was a bit shit like if you're gonna have a character do that and clearly show they're not okay with being queer then explore that and let us know why? Her just saying she only planned to be with smelly boys was a cop out tbh considering her character is all about being odd and unconventional. Just because we have the representation doesn't mean it's good!

Jackson was a fave of mine last season but again, another unlikeable one this time around. He just stormed about the place hurting himself and trying to emotionally hurt anyone else who tried to help him. I did like his friendship with Viv and I think it was a bold move for them to tackle self harm through this sort of storyline as it will show another side to it that's not just razor blades and obvious depression the way it's usually portrayed.

I was pissed off at the ending like I'm bored of this Otis and Maeve thing like how long are they gonna drag this out? I feel like Isaac shouldn't have been anything more than a friend to Maeve. She's going through shit with her mum, at school, with her friends it would have been nice just to see her form a good friendship with Isaac without knowing he has an ulterior motive. I guess they needed someone to keep her and Otis apart once Ola broke up with him but then that's the thing, they really didnt! Shoulda just let them get together in the last episode. What was the point in having Otis lose his virginity to Ruby, drunkenly when he couldn't even remember?! That just seemed random as hell.

But yea I feel like that season overall was a waste of time to watch and was really all over the place. they made the mistake of trying to accomplish too much plot wise rather than just focusing on the important things and giving us as much as the could within them, it's the characters they should have developed not 100 random insignificant plot lines laugh.gif

Posted by: Liаm 25th January 2020, 06:19 PM

I'm yet to see the finale as I'm watching that tonight but I agree about there being too much going on at times, like we still only have 8 episodes to get through everything but they're trying to fit in more representation via new characters as well as developing the characters/storylines/relationships from the first season, if there was maybe 10 or 12 I think it'd be less evident. I guess by just touching on issues, they're going for an angle of not making a big deal out of it, normalising things and showing that parts of your sexuality might be important but they don't have to define you. And yes, there's more representation than a hell of a lot of other shows, but it must be frustrating for asexual people for example to have that tease of representation, but not a lot coming of it.

I'm enjoying it just as much as season 1 so far though despite the issues! It's one of those shows that even with a few niggles, there's always so much more that keeps you invested. My highlight was the girls coming together too, that's a perfect example of how they should have tackled an issue because it was a bit more developed and had a moment to itself, it wasn't just something that was mentioned for a second, but it didn't end up as a consuming drama or take up a whole episode. It didn't take much, it didn't take long, but it was impactful and that's what tackling these issues should be like.

Season 3 needs a LOT more Ruby though, absolute queen. I like that she unravelled a bit with Otis and there's potential for her in S3 I think.

September 21st for that final season!

Posted by: Liаm 23rd September 2023, 08:00 PM

Season 4 was low-key a crock of shite, really quite weak. Flashes of its old brilliance, but with new characters and a new college, it felt like it was almost like trying to reboot and refresh but as it was the final season, none of that really landed and instead I feel like the older characters got shafted a bit with not as much development as they could have. Despite it taking 2 years, it felt rushed actually, just not what I wanted.

Posted by: vefunnossupo 10th December 2023, 08:23 AM

It's a very cool show. Serious and important topics are raised. It is a pity that in my time there was no such a process of upbringing, as it is shown in the series.
