I think we have a better balance now between 2014 and today. Yes the big comebacks by Ed/Drake/Bieber outstay their welcome at the top but that will probably sort itself out as time goes on.

I watch totps 1983 on BBC 4 each week and it was similar back then only songs chart runs were quicker due to the fact it was due to supply to shops etc. So Spandeu Ballet True is the current no1 in May 1983 and SB were a big pop band back then but only their truely classic tracks hit the no1 depending on the competition and most other no1s of back then are genuine classics today still. It really is very interesting following the chart back then.

I would say Rockabye was a song that rose to the top due to genuine popularity because although CB were a big act that can enter first week in the top 15 they did rise and stay at the top due to genuinely Rockabye being a huge pop song of that time - hence its chart run of 7-3-1-1-1 etc.

I think SOY has another two weeks or so in it yet. Harry Styles is now looking very likely to topple it at least for a while, I wouldn't be surprised if Galway Girl eventually gets there if he picks it as the next official single.

I do think it has been no.1 for far too long but then again its matched it on downloads on 9 of the 11 weeks its had so I suppose its been there rightly so, however the Brits did give the song a massive boost. I do think songs are spending longer times at no.1 but it'll get quicker during the next couple of years when the public/record labels start getting used to the market.

Ed Sheeran will be number one until the OCC finally decide to scrap this shambles of a chart.
