Doctor Blind Chart of the 2010s

I've totalled up all the chart runs of singles from each artist/act between 03/01/2010 and 29/12/2019 and combined these to determine the best performing artists of the decade.

At 40, it is dance music producer Jon Hopkins who was born in Kingston upon Thames in England. He first charted very briefly in September 2011 but broke through with 2013 album Immunity and has since gone on to have 6 Top 10 hits, 2 number 1s and could very well have a seventh Top 10 hit on Sunday with recent Kelly Lee Owens collaboration “Luminous Spaces”.

Despite not charting at all after 2012, the Canadian synthpop duo racked up 3 huge hits in 2010 which was more than enough to keep them among the biggest artists of decade - this despite the acrimonious split of Ethan Kath and Alice Glass in late 2014. Their only Top 75 hit of the decade was the Robert Smith collaboration on the reworking of “Not In Love”, originally by fellow Canadians Platinum Blonde which charted at #54 in the UK.

Ellery James Roberts was originally the lead singer of WU LYF (North Manchester’s World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation) but left the band dramatically at the end of 2012. After moving to Amsterdam he began to work on another project titled 'LUH', a collaboration with Ebony Hoorn. This became Lost Under Heaven and their self-titled spawned some big Top 10 hits between 2014-2016, and they continue to produce new music under this name to the current day.

Marina (minus the Diamonds) has been less present during the second half of the 2010s, but she was frequently in the Top 10 at the start - and performed even better in 2009 when debut single “Obsessions” spent 3 weeks at #1.

The singles from Lonerism never really clicked with me, but in 2015 I became obsessed with the first single of the follow-up LP “Let It Happen” and eventually most of the rest of the singles (and indeed B-sides) from Currents which put it firmly in my favourite albums of the decade - however, I've not been that excited by more recent singles so their quest for a #1 single may be already over. : (

Making his chart debut at the start of 2011, Sampha was featured on a wide variety of tracks in the early part of the decade before striking out on his own finally in 2013 with the brilliant “Without” which was woefully unappreciated by me at the time (it peaked at just #30), and the stripped back “Too Much” which soared to #2. After coming 4th in the BBC Sound of 2014 he seemed to take some time out before releasing his brilliant debut Process and spawning his 2 number 1s in the decade - “Blood On Me” and “(No One Knows Me) Like The Piano”.

The English indie/electronic pop group The xx had a meteoric rise to critical and commercial success at the end of the previous decade with 2 Top 10 hits on my chart in 2009 from their self-titled debut, though the follow-up never quite got the attention it fully deserved and they took a slight break through the middle part of the decade. In the interim I became obsessed and entranced by Jamie xx and his remix/reworking of Gil Scott-Heron's I’m New Here and then his own brilliant solo work (more to follow later in this countdown) - so it was a joy to listen to comeback single “On Hold” in 2016 which promptly shot to #1 and became their biggest hit of the decade. The 2020s could be off to a great start with a 4th album rumoured to be on the way in the not-too-distant future!

The death of David Bowie in early 2016 was the first in my lifetime of a major popstar to really hit and have a significant impact on me - I was deeply saddened and shocked by the news and at the same time completely in awe at his latest album Blackstar which arrived on my doormat the morning of his death. Obviously his placing here reflects his brief and somewhat unexpected reappearance in 2013 and in no way begins to cover his extensive catalogue releases but from a very short period at the end of an incredible career we still got some truly great songs to enjoy this decade- of which the James Murphy remix of his late 2013 single “Love Is Lost” is probably my favourite.

Excellent so far - particularity Tame Impala and The xx. Good to see you had 2 numbers 1s from The xx - the 2 strongest singles from I See You.

Shame you aren’t enjoying the new Tame Impala era, I love Borderline.

As I said in the countdown of my chart of 2017, it is quite incredible to think about the journey that Southend-on-Sea's The Horrors have been on since the dying embers of the ‘landfill indie’ of the mid-2000s. From their shadowy and dark debut Strange House in 2007 through the beautiful “Still Life” to the New Order-esque delicate and rich melodic synthpop of “Something To Remember Me By” which I absolutely loved - and indeed spent the most consecutive weeks in my Top 10 of the decade (a blistering 17 weeks!) I love it when a band aren't afraid to completely evolve and take risks and on V they did so to brilliant effect.

The Canadian collective Arcade Fire are next and almost match the time spent on the chart in the 2000s - mostly thanks to the excellent Funeral which long held my affections through the middle part of that decade. As you can see here, I was less taken by The Suburbs at the time, however it has since grown on me so I do slightly regret the less impressive peaks of the singles from that album, particularly “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)” which incredibly failed to go Top 10. I was back onboard for Reflektor with the wonderful “Afterlife” becoming my Christmas #1 for 2013 and their second number 1 (following “Rebellion (Lies)” in 2005). They achieved their second #1 of the decade in 2017 with the groups ode to consumerism in the 2010s, “Everything Now” - complete with Abba piano melody and driving beat.

Wonderful choices so far, Arcade Fire are certainly amongst my most listening to artists this decade, and I really like what I've heard from Crystal Castles and Tame Impala as well (which should really be a lot more!)

Thanks guys, hopefully some more that you will know and love in the Top 30.

Kicking it off are New York's The Drums, who ended the 2000s and started the 2010s at number 1 with “I Felt Stupid” - a one-off single that followed the critical success of their Summertime EP - itself spawning a number 2 in 2010 “Let's Go Surfing” which was written in 2008 and inspired by the optimism surrounding Barack Obama's victory in the 2008 presidential election. They continued to release their inimitable style of indie pop music fronted by the distinctive vocals of lead singer Jonny Pierce throughout the decade, suffering from diminishing returns on this chart after the wonderful Smiths-esque “Money” - although a shout-out to “How It Ended” which criminally only peaked at #13!

Despite not charting until 2016 - Héloïse Letissier (aka Chris, or Christine and the Queens) has racked up an impressive 7 Top 10 hits already including 3 number 1s. “Titled” was her debut but it was the French language “Saint Claude” that really won me over and made me go and buy the debut album. Simple and brilliantly executed non-conventional pop songs with an edge is how I would describe the music and the French language just makes it all the more intriguing and enjoyable - by far her best for me is 2018s anthemic “Doesn't Matter (Voleur de Soleil)” which soared to #1 in the summer.

The first single I heard from Natasha Khan, aka Bat For Lashes was “Prescilla” way back in 2007 - it was her first number 1 and was so good it caused me to immediately seek out her debut Fur and Gold which I absolutely adored and was nominated for the Mercury Prize later that year. She has released a further 4 albums since then, 3 of which were this decade and have gone on to maintain the quality of the debut, though she has (to date) only had 1 further number 1, which was 2012s “All Your Gold”. Anyway she came back this year with another great album spawning a further 2 Top 10 hits, though my favourite “Desert Man” has yet to receive the single treatment - it deserves to be a hit though!

Few other dance groups have managed to maintain this level of consistency and success through the 2010s - especially after doing so well in the 2000s. Following on from 2006s “Boy From School” and 2008s “Ready For The Floor” the British group managed a further 2 number 1s in this decade and basically very narrowly missed out last year with the brilliant “Hungry Child”. Their albums (and to be fair, some of their singles) remain a mix of bangers and the odd few mis-steps, but I have enjoyed much of what they've been putting out consistently!

I spent the first few months of 2010 at RAF Waddington completely detached from my friends/family and pretty alone (apart from a few work colleagues and the odd friendly pilot who was kind enough to come down to the bar and chat) so walking the streets of Lincoln, the only thing that really kept me company on that ridiculously cold January was the new Yeasayer album Odd Blood and its fantastically quirky pop songs. “Ambling Alp” was first but the follow-up, the groups ode to struggles around addiction, and specifically battling with addiction to alcohol, “O.N.E.” quickly became an obsession of mine, especially when the video was released and was easily one of the most unique and interesting hits of the 2010s and spent an impressive 4 weeks at number 1. I stuck with the group and they continued over the intervening years to release some proper tunes, though I still think that “Madder Red” probably should have been a #1 too, but you can't have everything!

Loving this so far, only David Bowie from this didn't have at least 5 hits for me last decade.

Agree with your comments on Hot Chip, very hit and miss but their hits are so good - put their best dozen or so songs together it's as good as anyone's.

All those long running and high charting Lost Under Heaven songs are so good. That really was one hell of an album.

I saw Yeasayer had called it a day just before Christmas which is a shame, a fab singles band

40 - I'm not too familiar with Jon Hopkins' work but I've liked what I've heard (his new one is great), I should probably give his album a spin sometime.
39 - 'Not In Love' passed me by completely at the time but I heard it again recently and it's rather great.
37 - 'Radiaoctive' and 'Froot' are my faves from what you charted
36 - don't think they ever charted for me although I do enjoy Let It Happen
34 - I'd have to agree with 'On Hold' being their best track yet
31 - Not at all a fan of them but I really enjoyed 'Everything Now' (The song)
29 - Really liked 'Titled' and 'Girlfriend', 'Gone' was rather good too
