BuzzJack Music Forum _ Pop _ Nelly Furtado - 'The Ride'

Posted by: Juan Carlos Feb 7 2016, 02:29 PM

A new album from Nelly Furtado is expected to be out this year. Her site has changed today with a new logo and she mentioned last month that it was produced by John Congleton, who is known for his work with St. Vincent.

WTF is that hair.

I miss the days when Nelly Furtado ruled the world cry.gif I feel so old now.

Posted by: Umi Feb 7 2016, 07:03 PM

Can't say I have much anticipation for this. Really grew to hate pretty much everything to do with her last album.

Posted by: bluesunstorm Feb 9 2016, 02:29 AM

I liked her last album, but I think the strongest material from the era lay in the bonus tracks: "Soak It Up", "End of the World", "End Game", "Skylight", and "Cry". I loved "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)" too, it's a shame it never achieved any notable hit status, I guess there's a reason many people call the producer "Flopchild" these days. I'll be interested to see what this era sounds like; I'm wondering if it will be more "Indie" sounding, akin to the Folklore era or even more so.

Posted by: Davidson Feb 10 2016, 02:42 PM

Let's hope this is better than her last album as that was a mess, title track aside.

She just put out a new track called 'Hadron Collider' with Blood Orange which is absolutely lovely though so I would love it if she stuck to that kind of style/production for this project. Her voice will always have that magic element for me:

Posted by: mr_pmt Feb 10 2016, 05:46 PM

'Waiting For The Night' was such a gem, it's a shame she was long past the point of relevance for it to do anything.

Posted by: Davidson Feb 12 2016, 01:10 PM

She has been posting the title 'What Happens In Dallas' all over social media so that could be the title of the new album.

Some lovely potential album artwork too:

Nappy weave.

Last album was awful so not got much hype for this one.

The album is called The Ride and it will be released sometime in March.

From http://i-d.vice.com/en_us/article/nelly-furtado-on-her-musical-evolution-and-working-with-dev-hynes:

QUOTE
Nelly Furtado has been making a comeback recently. It started with "Hadron Collider," the hazy yet impassioned track she co-wrote for the recent Blood Orange album Freetown Sound, continued with her July single "Behind Your Back," and will culminate when her own new album, The Ride, drops in March 2017. Having joined forces with producer John Congleton, and swapped life lessons with collaborator Dev Hynes, Furtado is ready to start a brand new period for herself as an artist. Last night, during a high-powered set at the NYFW kickoff party, she also debuted a brand-new song, "Islands of Me."

Also, the track "Islands of Me" was uploaded on SoundCloud.

Islands of me is fantastic, this could grow on me !!

Omg is she still going?!

Posted by: jakewild Sep 11 2016, 03:13 PM

big hoops is still a B O P tbh. i'm here for any kinda nelly

Posted by: Bjork Sep 11 2016, 04:39 PM

oh Islands of Me is amazing! very nice beat

never understood how the last album flopped so bad, really liked Spirit Indestructible the single, the song was too good for the charts

Posted by: Liаm Sep 11 2016, 04:52 PM

TSI the album was awful, I can see why it flopped. Waiting For The Night was a total bop though, that should've smashed. It's amazing how far she fell in 6 years, if she would have released in say 2008 or 2009 she'd probably have continued to run the game! 6 years is just such a long time in pop.

Posted by: Cremey Sep 11 2016, 05:04 PM

'Islands of Me' is odd but I like it a lot. 'Hadron Collider' is one of my songs of the year too so I'm glad to hear Dev Hynes has been involved with the album.

I actually quite liked 'The Spirit Indestructible'! Not the best of albums by any means, but quite a few highlights on it.

Absolutely! She was too arrogant.

Also her hair makes her look like she popped into the recording studio onr day and the next a videoshoot in the middle of a schoolrun

Posted by: Cremey Sep 11 2016, 05:09 PM

This is one of her absolute best let's be honest

Posted by: blacksquare Sep 12 2016, 04:56 PM

'Islands of Me' has some production issues but there is something there. I like it. I hope Dev is heavily involved with the new record.

Circles was my favourite song on the Spirit Indestructible, although the album was a dud.

More great examples of being a 'feminist leader'.

Posted by: djgrafdemon Sep 12 2016, 05:04 PM

wow, Islands Of Me reminds me of something, you know, strange but so sweet and pleasurable (like Bowie did for me in the fullness of time) rolleyes.gif

Posted by: BUY PERF. ILLUS! Sep 12 2016, 05:12 PM

What was that awful song about a Parking Lot she did? Wow that was bad.

How was she arrogant. Arrogant and Nelly don't even go in the same sentence.

She thought she could leave the pop game for as long as she wanted and come back on top. Well, no.

Maybe hubris is the better word.

And omg yes that song!! Wow!

Explode is one of her best yes.

Posted by: Tyler Sep 14 2016, 11:22 AM

You are forgiven in that case! laugh.gif

I wasn't a fan of her last album, but I don't think it's a product of arrogance. She's always kinda just done what she wanted, 'Loose' just happened to be a MOMENT for her, just like her debut.

Posted by: BUY PERF. ILLUS! Sep 14 2016, 11:49 AM

But she coulda had another big era or mire after it but instead she waited and we got ... Big Hoops :/

Posted by: Kuki Sanban Sep 14 2016, 12:17 PM

I don't think taking a long break between albums is arrogant. Being arrogant would be releasing a crap album every single year and expecting it to be huge surely?

I'm with you, it's not arrogance.

I don't think even she expected Loose to be THAT massive. She has always seemed like the type of artist who does their own thing, walking in and out of mainstream success. It makes sense that she's working with Dev Hynes and seemingly going down a more independent route now.

Posted by: mr_pmt Sep 14 2016, 05:03 PM

Have none of you learned by now not to take notice of a single word he says?!

Posted by: BUY PERF. ILLUS! Sep 14 2016, 05:11 PM

Yes, as your 1 sentence input from time to time is sooooo invaluuuublllle.

Posted by: ♡ Heezus Froot ♡ Sep 16 2016, 06:10 PM

The Spirit Indestructible is a great album if you take out all the filler and keep the best tracks. And her single choices were spot on.

Posted by: Cremey Jan 15 2017, 10:13 AM

New single, 'Pipe Dreams' is wonderful.

aaaand we have an album teaser:

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Jan 15 2017, 01:39 PM

I love it too, though I doubt Pipe Dreams will have any impact at all. sad.gif

Posted by: liamk97 Jan 15 2017, 03:45 PM

Sounds a little like a Goldfrapp ballad; maybe a tiny bit Lana Del Rey? (that might be more to do with the video style mind).

Despite loving those two artists, I can't say I'm particularly wowed by this. As part of an album, probably, but not as a single.

With virtually zero promotion, this album would bomb big time but I am loving Pipe Dreams and Cold Hard Truth. wub.gif

Good interview and the performance is surreal !! wub.gif

On another note, the tracklist that was posted isn't complete, according to wiki, it has three other songs: "Bliss", "Islands of me", "Behind your back".

Enjoy!

Posted by: Queen LeQueefa Jan 30 2017, 03:26 PM

She looks like that One Hit Wonder who sang Two Times laugh.gif - same styling, art and everythin!

Posted by: mr_pmt Jan 30 2017, 06:28 PM

It sounds like she's aiming squarely for the Radio 2 audience this time.

Posted by: blacksquare Mar 31 2017, 08:11 AM

There are some songs on this that sound the most 'Nelly' since Folklore

Posted by: gooddelta Apr 2 2017, 11:20 PM

Love love love the cover of Arlissa's Sticks and Stones, such a lost classic.

Posted by: Lieowstic Apr 3 2017, 02:40 AM

!!! I bloody loved that song at the time wub.gif Should've been massive.

Not heard this album yet but I gave Cold Hard Truth a listen and it's v good!

Posted by: blacksquare Apr 3 2017, 12:32 PM

This is great, such a return to form

Posted by: pippa Apr 3 2017, 02:31 PM

There seems very little hype, promotions etc for this album, a top 40 placement would be wonderful but i fear it may struggle to make top 75.

I feel like people are trying to pretend this is just a few years after Loose or something - it's a decade. She's releasing this on her own label and clearly isn't bothered about charting.

You can't really expect it to do anything.

Posted by: Catderella Apr 6 2017, 08:46 AM

Flatline and Carnival Games are so good wub.gif

Posted by: Bjork Apr 6 2017, 08:49 AM

Pitchfork gave it a decent review, which is surprising cos mostly they ignore albums like this

Posted by: Red Blooded Man Apr 7 2017, 03:35 AM

I find the cohesion lacking from the album, my favourite are so far Carnival Games (which should be an obvious single choice), Paris Sun and Phoenix.

I am annoyed that she didn't include Islands of Me in her album. sad.gif

Considering they uploaded the video for 'Pipe Dreams' then a semi decent review is expected. She's going for the Solange/Robyn/Carly angle but it's not quite working.

Posted by: 360Jupiter Apr 7 2017, 09:56 AM

Paris Sun and Cold Hard Truth standouts for me. Lack of promo now, but she might have some lined up for later in the year.

It's not very commercial but could shift some copies if she landed a spot on something like Jools or a Radio 2 interview. Even if later in the year and she just made out it was a brand new release.

Posted by: Andrew♀ Apr 8 2017, 04:05 AM

Giving this a listen tomorrow, can't believe it's actually missed the top 100. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Juan Carlos 🌊 Apr 8 2017, 06:48 PM

I like the album and it's also great that Nelly changes the direction with each release. I mean, she fits in every genre to be honest.

"Islands of Me" is on the vinyl, but I agree that she should have included in the digital/physical version too.

This album is so good wub.gif Magic and Palaces are my favourites so far. This has really got me interested in her again wub.gif

Posted by: Ashley Apr 13 2017, 06:30 AM

Anyone else getting Big Mistake Natalie Imbruglia from some of these songs?

Posted by: tommie May 28 2017, 03:01 PM

I just noticed that The Best of Nelly Fartudo got certified Silver, so I guess this album campaign inspired some trickle sales.

Get coins bitch and all that!

Posted by: No Sleeep May 28 2017, 05:35 PM

Magic is one of my favourite songs of 2017 wub.gif Up there with her best. I can't really can't into the rest of the album on first listen but I'll give it a chance

is everyone just going to ignore the fact that she's completely abandoned the usual 'Nelly Furtado' font for her name sad.gif One of my favourite things about her image was the font continuity.

The album sounds quite decent on first listen, I've not listened to it all. 'Sticks & Stones' is a great cover though.

Posted by: No Sleeep Jul 22 2017, 04:58 PM

I hope she tours with this album.

Posted by: Tyler Jul 22 2017, 09:46 PM

I'm upset she's wearing overalls tbh.

I'm saying this as someone who thought they were all the rage growing up in the nineties, in rural GA.
