09. Day Tripper (1965) / non-album single 5/16 votes The next Beatles classic to fall in these polls is 'Day Tripper'! This leaves 'All You Need Is Love' as the last song standing from the three-way tiebreak in an earlier round for 11th place. 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' departed on that occasion. 'Day Tripper' was released as a double A-side with 'We Can Work It Out'. As mentioned when the latter departed, this was the first ever instance of a double A-side release in the UK. It soon became a popular method for artists to show off their versatility. The two songs in this double A-side feel pretty different to each other for example, with 'We Can Work It Out' often dubbed as the more commercial of the two. We've flipped that on its head on BuzzJack though, as 'We Can Work It Out' finished 13th in this survivor, with 'Day Tripper' outlasting it in 9th place. This song was written primarily by Lennon while feeling the pressure to come up with something for the Christmas market. Both him and Paul share the vocals on 'Day Tripper'. The production does a lot of the talking on this song - as the guitar riff is incredibly distinctive. As for the lyrical content, both Lennon and McCartney have described it as a "drug song". This would of course become a common theme in later Beatles work too! 'Day Tripper' never appeared on a studio album but was recorded during sessions for 'Rubber Soul'. The double A-side of 'We Can Work It Out' and 'Day Tripper' was incredibly successful in the United Kingdom and became the groups' latest chart topper. Over in the States, 'We Can Work It Out' hit #1 but 'Day Tripper' settled for #5. 09. Day Tripper | 5/16 votes 10. Help! | 5/18 votes 11. Maybe a slight bit too high there for Day Tripper. Good track but not in their elite.
Hello, Goodbye for the umpteenth time but unlike other survivors this isn't becoming annoying as like I said i like all the competitors here! |
