Hello again all! A few people have started their EOYs now so I thought I'd stick mine into the mix to add a bit more liveliness into the forum. As I've written a Python program to count up all my charts automatically (provided I actually input them all in) you're going to be really lucky and get a full Top 200 this year (it also means there'll be more chance that you'll know at least one song in the list). Anyway here are the basics:
  • The format stays the same as last year (again) - 100 points for a week at #1, 1 point for a week at #100, I can add or take away up to 300 points from any given song and songs still in the chart will have the remainder of their run estimated so we don't end up with a ton of songs from January at the top. Again, songs mentioned in last year's chart aren't in this one.
  • I will shortly be posting my Year In Music recap, along with a list of all the #1s in my chart this year, which you may or may not know.
  • After that you'll get a 2019 Recap, a Worst Songs Chart, a Mainstream Song of the Year and an Album of the Year, and then the Top 200 starting after next Saturday which will be counted into the chart.
Any and all comments are very much welcomed!

2020 in Music

I remember this time last year I was really up for writing a long paragraph about everything that had happened in my Personal Chart but to be honest I can't even remember what has hppened in it this year so this should hopefully be short. I would say that music in 2020 has taken an upwards turn from that in 2019, and I have certainly discovered a lot more new artists I'm excited to hear more from. On the other hand I have had quite a few 5-week #1s in my chart which sort-of just stayed there until I found something else worthy of being #1 and because the song in question wasn't good enough to break the record.

My music tastes are still very indie and dance-heavy, although they have definitely become considerably less mainstream, most memorably noted in the two weeks in January in which no songs in my Top 100 had ever been in the Official Top 100 (although both charts contained Martin Solveig's 'Juliet & Romeo' which of course went on to be a long-running Top 100 hit. And a few songs from moore obscure countries managed to make it big here as well.

So, including the unrevealed song I've decided will be #1 next week, we have had 21 #1s this year, a year-on-year INCREASE (cheer.gif) of 1! (unless you include the Christmas song from last year, in which case it's the same, but who knows we might get another Christmassy #1 this year?)

2019 Recap

1 Foals - Exits
2 Two Door Cinema Club - Talk
3 Cavetown - Home
5 Walk Off the Earth - Mike's Song
6 Alle Farben - Fading (ft. ILIRA)
7 Cavetown - Green
8 Sam Martin - Sabotage
9 Martin Jensen - Somebody I'm Not (ft. Bjornskov)
10 Badflower - Promise Me

If you've got a good memory (or just share my taste in music) you'll remember that Foals topped my EOY last year with their catchy indie-pop track 'Exits'. Breaking recent trend, they DID actually make my top 10 this year with their feature on 'Hypercolour' and so will presumably be making an appearance in this list somewhere. As for the rest of the Top 10, as usual none of them released anything good with the exceptions of Cavetown, who hit #1 with 'Sweet Tooth' and Avicii, who made yet another posthumous Top 10 with Kygo on 'Forever Yours'.

Worst Songs of 2020:

#5: Ariana Grande - 34+35

The #5 spot this year was very hotly contested but in the end I decided to give the honour to a pop song for the sake of adding some variety into the countdown. This song does have its similarities with the songs above it though, mainly that it's all about sex. Songs that are about sex have never gone down well with me, particularly ones which are as grossly explicit about it as this one, and she even talks about how she's been drinking coffee and eating healthily in order to make her better at it. Hopefully she moves on from this era quickly and starts singing about more tasteful things, like fluffy bunnies or social justice.

#4: M24 ft. Tion Wayne - London

Co-winner of last year's Worst Song Tion Wayne was pretty quick to provide us with another song which had an equally bad chorus, more specifically:

(Gyal-gyal) Gyal from North London (Uhh-uuh)
Gyal from East London (Uhh-uuh)
Gyal from West London (Uhh-uuh)
Gyal from South London (Uhh-uhh)

This isn't as atrocious as Keisha & Becky, although that might be helped by the fact it only spent a solitary week in the Top 40, plus the fat that no-one had ever heard of M24 (whoever that is) before this song and no-one's heard of them since. Managing to stick in my head from a single chart play is some feat though.

#3: D-Block Europe ft. Aitch - UFO

Stalwarts of the Worst Songs Chart, D-Block Europe came out with this tripe just as we were getting to the end of the year and I thought they might actually manage not to end up in my Worst Songs list. The song features Aitch, who is a constant reminder why there never used to be any rappers from the North as his grating accent just adds to the headache. The song itself only got a solitary chart play but stuck aroun the Top 100 for long enough, meaning I had to endure hearing the line 'You ever had a drug dealer eat your (synonym of cat)' every single chart recap video. Oh, and I almost forgot to say, the song is all about sex.

#2: StaySolidRocky - Party Girl

Another debutant in the Worst Songs List, StaySolidRocky and his tuneless moaning voice shot up into the charts with this dreadfulness early in the year. It's about a girl who likes partying, drinking and doing drugs. Evidently this is the sort of girl Mr. SolidRocky likes, maybe because she wants to have sex with him, although she might already be taken as she's 'in love with guns too' (I geniunely didn't know that was the line up until right now after only hearing the edited version on the charts). The day this dropped out of the Top 40 having missed the Top 10 altogether was one fo the best days of the year.

#1: Cardi B & Meghan Thee Stallion - WAP

And so, in a massive step for gender equality, we have our first EVER all-female worst song! sarcasm.gif This song is all the four others I've mentioned put together and then made 10 times worse, there aren't even any lyrics I can safely add to this line without me feeling icky inside. And it's not even got catchiness going for it, the beat behind it sounding like a cat being strangled very slowly. Which of course means that for some bizarre reason the UK public LOVED this song and sent it straight to the top of the charts with no questions asked. Of course I'm not going to stop Ms. B and Ms. Stallion from releasing whatever music they like, but I'll certainly stop myself from remembering that it ever existed, and if I do I'll try and pretend it's a song about a toilet accident (or better, two animals in the rain)

Let's add our winner to the Hall of Fame:

Hall of Fame
2014: Bars & Melody - Hopeful
2015: Drake - Hotline Bling
2016: Drake - Controlla
2017: Post Malone ft. Quavo - Congratulations
2018: Tyga ft. Offset - Taste
2019: Russ & Tion Wayne - Keisha & Becky
2020: Cardi B & Meghan Thee Stallion - WAP

Mainstream Song of the Year: Taylor Swift ft. Bon Iver - exile

This category becomes less and less competitive every year, but I suppose that gives me even more of a reason to include it since the winners aren't competing for the top spots of the overall EOY anymore. Nonetheless if you had told me this time last year that Taylor Swift, an act I previously turned my nose up at, would be getting my Mainstream Song of the Year I'd have thought you were barking mad. This, however, is a true moment of a song, both Taylor and Bon Iver sounding brilliant together and providing the only song to hit both my Top 20 and the official Top 20 this year. So really there was very little competition and this being released relieved me a bit that there was at least one good charting song this year.

(of course the Top 20 is a different beast to the Top 40 so the winner of my Top 40 Singles Countdown is still to play for!)

Mainstream Song of the Year: Hall of Fame
1999: Fatboy Slim - Praise You
2000: Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby
2001: Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head
2002: DJ Sammy & Yanou ft. Do - Heaven
2003: Room 5 - Make Luv
2004: Eric Prydz - Call On Me
2005: Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor
2006: Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancin'
2007: MIKA - Grace Kelly
2008: Basshunter ft. DJ Mental Theo's Bassheadz - Now You're Gone
2009: Black Eyed Peas - I Gotta Feeling
2010: Taio Cruz - Dynamite
2011: LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem (ft. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock)
2012: PSY - Gangnam Style
2013: Ylvis - The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)
2014: DJ Fresh & Jay Fay ft. Ms. Dynamite - Dibby Dibby Sound
2015: Jess Glynne - Don't Be So Hard On Yourself
2016: Lukas Graham - 7 Years
2017: JP Cooper - September Song
2018: Dean Lewis - Be Alright
2019: Avicii ft. Aloe Blacc - SOS

Album of the Year: Declan McKenna - Zeros

Charting Songs from This Album:
2020 01 Beautiful Faces
2020 01 The Key to Life on Earth
2020 01 Be An Astronaut
2020 09 Emily
2020 11 Rapture
2020 13 Twice Your Size
2020 16 Eventually, Darling
2020 20 Daniel, You're Still A Child
2020 20 Sagittarius A*

Absolutely no contest here, mainly because I didn't listen to any other albums this year kink.gif (I probably did but none of them stick out in my mind!) This release was highly anticipated by myself and for the most part it didn't disappoint, providing three #1 singles and a whole host of good album tracks. All the songs on the album follow the trand of starting out as quite light-hearted indie pieces before throwing a mad guitar-heavy instrumental towards the end, which was very disconcerting at first but I grew to like them, allowing Declan to continue his 100% streak of EOY #1 albums.

Hall of Fame
2014: Nico & Vinz - Black Star Elephant
2015: Avicii - Stories
2016: Lukas Graham - Lukas Graham
2017: Declan McKenna - What Do You Think About The Car?
2018: Amy Shark - Love Monster
2019: Walking on Cars - Colours
2020: Declan McKenna - Zeros

Exile is nice but was one my least favourites on Folklore overall. I find it a tad on the dull side.

I'm looking forward to see what makes your chart because I'm sure I won't have previously heard of mostly any of it laugh.gif

Right let's get going!

200: Vulfpeck - Half of the Way 541pts
NE (28/12/2019) 34-27-24-25-29-41-53-65-82-90-100-xx

Our Top 200 begins with ex-BJSC entrants Vulfpeck who I completely forgot about until doing last year's EOY, during which I discovered this. It's a tune but a lot more...erm...normal than Darwin Derby. And I've completely forgotten about them again since so I should rinse and repeat now.

199: Boston Bun - Nothing But Rainbows 544pts
NE (25/01/2020) 50-44-38-40-43-43-50-57-59-70-78-96-xx

Boston Bun never topped Spread Love (Paddington) but this is a nice little song which scraped my Top 40 and stuck around for a little while.

198: Twinnie - Type of Girl 548pts
NE (14/03/2020) 36-26-30-28-33-45-57-65-69-73-xx

A rare female pop song in here, I discovered this thanks to BJSC and it stuck around long enough afterwards to make it into here.

197: The Sweet Serenades - City Lights 550pts
NE (08/08/2020) 61-49-45-33-29-28-33-49-62-74-98-xx

Double BJSC helping as this was one of my four entries to actually make the Final this year, admittedly I thought I would like it more than I did but it still remains a very nice track.

196: Matt Maher - Alive & Breathing (ft. Elle Limebear) 551pts
NE (29/02/2020) 41-20-23-23-25-31-45-65-80-96-xx

This is the first of many worship songs in here. The chorus goes 'if you're still alive and breathing, praise the Lord!' which feels a bit morbid but it is a very positive song and one which struck a chord with me in the early part of the year.

195: Mandy Capristo - 13 Schritte 556pts
NE (10/10/2020) 50-25-19-23-27-35-57-67-84-97-...

Another female pop song! Maybe they're not as rare as I thought. This one is however in German which means I have no idea what it's about but it's funky nonetheless.

194: Blanks - Higher 556pts
NE (12/10/2019) 27-24-35-44-62-66-61-64-71-77-97-79-86-79-90-98-xx

Dutch YouTube personality Blanks became a staple of my chart in 2020 as he brought out catchy song after catchy song. I should probably have omitted this one since it was mainly in 2019 but it does deserve a mention as it's a tune!

193: Jeremy Camp & Adrienne Camp - Whatever May Come 558pts
NE (12/09/2020) 35-22-21-22-23-28-48-70-76-xx

A second worship song now, another one which is a bit more subdued but still very nice. And yes, they are married.

192: The Kite String Tangle - North 561pts
NE (04/04/2020) 66-48-40-47-55-57-62-98-xx
RE (06/06/2020) 89-91-97-xx
RE (04/07/2020) 92-80-78-64-74-69-80-xx

This fab Estonian dance track gave me my highest position in Club Bizarre to date cheer.gif and was initially outside my Top 200 but that wouldn't be doing justice to how much this song had been around for me this year. Three separate chart runs tells you everything you need to know! Definitely give this one a listen if you haven't already

191: Chris Tomlin - Tin Roof (ft. Blessing Offor) 562pts
NE (28/11/2020) 28-22-26-...

Onto another worship song now, the credits are definitely misleading as Chris sings a grand total of two lines in the whole song but it's on an album which is him featuring a load of people so 'Blessing Offor ft. Chris Tomlin' would have looked out of place. This is definitely a breath of fresh air though and one of my picks from the album.

190: Plested - The Least That I Could Do 563pts
NE (30/11/2019) 36-25-30-40-38-43-47-58-65-76-90-xx

Completely forgot this one existed, a nice little indie-pop tune to get yourself into and once again I've completely forgotten about Plested since.

189: Ellie Holcomb - Constellations 565pts
NE (16/05/2020) 43-46-46-41-38-34-33-39-46-79-xx

Yes that's right, another worship song! Again this has something a little bit different to it, a nice so tempo with lyrics that at times feel like a cry for help ('honestly I'm so alone' fit in quite well with lockdown even if it was unintentional) and another great effort from Ellie.

188: MAX - Working For The Weekend (ft. bbno$) 566pts
NE (19/09/2020) 9-19-27-33-33-44-49-64-81-95-96-xx

The lowest Top 10 single to make the countdown, unfortunately AJR's new music was rubbish but they did manage to produce this, which in turn got MAX his first Top 10 as lead artist and bbno$ (still don't know how to pronounce that) his first chart hit.

187: CalledOut Music - Other Side 572pts
NE (07/11/2020) 31-31-29-36-42-60-...

Also a worship song, this one brings some UK RnB to the table and is very laid-back and relaxed.

186: Mura Masa - Live Like We're Dancing (ft. Georgia) 572pts
NE (08/02/2020) 54-52-50-58-40-40-43-53-62-64-76-83-88-95-85-xx

I've sort-of forgotton how long this stuck around in my chart, this was Georgia's first Top 40 since About Work The Dancefloor and was evidently a very slow burner.

185: Alle Farben - The Night We Met 573pts
NE (25/01/2020) 73-53-32-30-31-37-43-52-55-66-74-93-xx

I lied about Alle Farben not having any success this year but this is the highest he's getting, it feels a tad darker than his usual stuff and was a nice post-album release but not one I've gone back to much since.

184: Sea Girls - Do You Really Wanna Know? 573pts
NE (27/06/2020) 57-45-43-44-42-38-50-55-63-57-66-79-xx

This is also the highest Sea Girls made this year but it's probably worth more than its peak, I enjoyed this throughout summer and it brings back some nice memories.

183: Sheppard - Die Young 576pts
NE (26/10/2019) 34-30-28-24-23-32-46-55-89-84-90-xx

I thought about omitting this one as well as its points came mainly from 2019 but it did get a few more plays from me in 2020 thanks to its appearance in BJSC, even if it didn't re-enter my chart.

182: Miloe - Winona 579pts
NE (21/11/2020) 55-43-33-29-...

One I'm enjoying right now, African-born American indie-guy Miloe (again, no idea how you pronounce it) has his first Top 40 here with a song about someone called Winona (Winona Ryder I think? Although I don't actually know who that is). Cavetown introduced me to this guy although their collaboration failed to break my Top 40.

181: Jeremy Camp - Keep Me in the Moment 584pts
NE (27/06/2020) 41-29-30-23-25-26-38-45-82-96-92-xx

And we finish off this section with another worship song! Mr. Camp was as usual busy making music which means he's already racked up two entries here, this is another real pick-me-up during the lockdown era for me.

let's see how many songs from this chart I recognise then tongue.gif unsurprisingly it's just the song contest tracks so far, North is one of the best you've sent recently, should've saved that for a BJSC! (but yay that it finally got you a CB top 10)
Die Young was one of the better BJSC winners of the year too, it briefly made my top 40 too but didn't make my EOY chart.

Exile is nice but was one my least favourites on Folklore overall. I find it a tad on the dull side.

I'm looking forward to see what makes your chart because I'm sure I won't have previously heard of mostly any of it laugh.gif

I knew you'd be a fan of 34+35, unfortunately I'm really not at all tongue.gif Hope you make some discoveries in here - thanks Lewis!

let's see how many songs from this chart I recognise then tongue.gif unsurprisingly it's just the song contest tracks so far, North is one of the best you've sent recently, should've saved that for a BJSC! (but yay that it finally got you a CB top 10)
Die Young was one of the better BJSC winners of the year too, it briefly made my top 40 too but didn't make my EOY chart.

I did think about sending North to BJSC but just thought it probably fit better in CB, glad I finally got some success there though. Hopefully with doing a Top 200 there'll be more songs people recognise! Thanks Dan biggrin.gif

Poor '34+35' laugh.gif admittedly it's one of my least favourite songs on 'positions' but the music video and clean version have helped it grow on me more - "love me 'til the daylight" is a somewhat pretty sounding censorship of such a lewd song laugh.gif I don't mind 'WAP' either but agree that 'Party Girl' and 'UFO' are pretty dire. I barely remember anything about 'London' oops kink.gif as for the positives... 'Do You Really Wanna Know?' is my favourite to appear in the countdown so far and I love 'exile' as your mainstream pick too, what a breathtaking collaboration. I'm glad that Bon Iver's involvement with Taylor has carried over to 'evermore' as well - not just another collab but prominent backing vocals in places throughout. Looking forward to more heart.gif

Hi Pete!

Plested and MAX are the only two artists I immediately recognise in that first section ph34r.gif but great songs; Plested in particular wub.gif shocked to see 34+35 in the worst songs of the year too! ohmy.gif

Zeros is a great album from Declan, I think I might slightly prefer it to his debut? Glad to see that as your top album of the year! *.*

I didn't mind '34+35' when I first heard it on the chart show but then I heard the original... nope laugh.gif 'London' was very much blink-and-you-miss-it but I didn't blink and therefore didn't miss it sadly. I'll need to listen to some of Taylor's new album although I guess I'll hear a few tomorrow! Thanks Jade biggrin.gif

Glad you're a fan of these! (except 34+35, it's got people talking at least kink.gif) I think you've already known more songs in my EOY this year than last year which is definitely a good thing - thanks Calum biggrin.gif
