Ultimate 'Casualties of Streaming' Rate



Believe it or not, we are approaching the 5th anniversary of the chart as we knew it being changed forever with the addition of streaming equivalent sales to the chart! What was perhaps a controversial move at the time quickly became a necessity to keep the chart relevant but this unfortunately meant a lot of great songs (and even more not-so great songs) were denied of a top 40 position. In this rate, which follows UK #1s in the Ultimate series, we'll be finding which of these songs most deserved an official top 40 peak... but firstly we need to wade through all the filler. Over 450 songs will be eligible for this contest (to be clear: all the songs below made the top 40 in the sales only chart, but did not in the official chart). These will be randomised and split into 12 groups (any songs that fit the criteria within the month of June 2019 will be placed in the later groups).

2 groups will be open each week. There will be many songs in each group but only the top five will be guaranteed a place in the final whilst the rest of the top 10 will go to the play-off round. In the event where any of these songs do make the official top 40 they will be removed from the competition.

Simply vote from 5 to 10 songs in each group using the Eurovision voting format. If you want to remind yourself of the songs then click on the Spotify playlists provided.

Really like this concept! An opportunity to sift through songs that don't usually turn up in games on here.

I listened to all the songs I didn't know/remember (apart from Normanrockx and the 22-minute Dave Grohl song, though I recall listening to the latter once at the time because I didn't realise it was so long until I was already several minutes in and I felt I may as well stick with it ) and.....yeah these are not exactly vintage lists as a whole, but within that there's enough quality to easily fill both my votes, with a couple major gems.

Not sure if it's meant to be +12/+10/+8... or +10/+9/+8... since the OP and your vote disagree

Great to see Calvin Harris and The Avener make the final (the latter has been somewhat of a re-discovery, I definitely underrated it at the time). Shame CLiQ couldn't quite make it but at least they're in the play-off, as well as Alesso and Rudimental. Kings Of Leon lose a spot in the play-off on a tiebreak (I decided to go with BJSC rules regarding this beforehand - another song got more 12s). Surprised Viola Beach did well enough to make the final actually but the song's rather good, just didn't think it was that well known outside of Radio X listeners.

Group 2 Results

Great to see Elton John make the final, he looked like missing the top 10 entirely at the beginning but thankfully got a surge of votes towards the end. The rest of the finalists are rather good too. What's surprising is Louisa can only make the play-off and Radiohead of all people are high enough to make it, plus Buzzfave Kylie flopping in 21st! Mura Masa making it is pleasing too, and follows 'Wavey' as the second fully rapped song in the play-off (whilst none make the final). Also, one of my faves here in '9TS' sadly just misses out but did very well to make it as high as 11th anyway. And we can collectively lol at Tulisa and 5H falling short too.

'Tiny Dancer' wasn't a hit at the time but it's definitely been one of the more popular Elton songs in the download/streaming era long before the movie came out. Maybe helped a bit by that Ironik song that sampled it but I don't think it was exactly an obscure sample even then.

Very happy to see The Avener straight to the final! That is a song I kind of forgot existed but I loved it at the time. CLiQ, Florence and Mura Masa progressing is nice too though I actually thought the former would do a bit better.

Also yay for Calum Scott flopping despite so many people coming out of the woodworks to praise it of late x

Very glad 'Fade Out Lines' made the top 5, a true personal classic for me. A song that I for one have never forgotten about Surprised 'All Goes Wrong' did! I'd listened to the album at the time but I didn't remember that track nor it doing anything half-notable on the charts (though I really liked it upon re-listening).

'Burn The Witch' making the top 10 is very unexpected. Poor '9TS (90 Baby)' just missing out Also 'No More', but I knew its vote spread of 2 +12s, a +2 and nothing else wouldn't get it far.
