Great list I had been looking for something like this for a while.
The Escape Club are missing from 1991, #8 with I'll Be There. They didn't chart in the UK but later wrote hits for Louise from Eternal. |

Notable that there hasn't been a British Hot 100 number 1 for 3 years now, of which that & the previous 2 were the same artist. Also just noticed Leave Right Now charted in 2010! That seems rather random, no?

This is now updated to the end of 2017, and here's where it starts to get complicated. First of all, we're seeing more and more songs get excluded due to the British artist having a lead credit, but not being the first credited artist. There were three in 2017 alone: 'Scared To Be Lonely', 'Something Just Like This', and 'Get Low', and there's bound to be more when we get to 2018 (such as 'FRIENDS'). So we'll need to re-evaluate whether to change this rule and include these songs after all.
Second of all, two songs which originally charted before the Soundscan era have now re-entered and had a charting week within the Soundscan era (specifically 'Faith' and 'Careless Whisper', both of which occurred following the death of George Michael). So I will probably give these a special mention somewhere as well. And lastly, I may have to go back and include 21 Savage's chart entries, but I'd rather wait for now and see how the news plays out.  (And yes, volunteers to do 2018 are welcome  )

This is now updated to the final chart week of 2018. Only 17 new British entries that year, the fewest since 2010 which also had 17. But actually that's not counting 'Friends' or 'Happier' since those are considered non-British (i.e. belonging to Marshmello only) under Britster's original criteria. I'm for sure (eventually) going to revise the criteria for joint lead credits as it doesn't feel right to exclude some of these artists' biggest hits.
There should be another upswing for 2019 with the help of several entries each from Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran. Stay tuned ~ |

makes no sense to exclude co-leads, I could understand features but excluding a co-lead, why? if a song is a duet why it has all the credit be given the 1st name? makes zero sense

This is now updated to the end of 2019! You'll see a few of 2020's biggest hits were already charting but hadn't peaked yet.
Also, finally made an update to the criteria to allow all joint lead credits, even if the first listed artist is not British or Irish. So the likes of 'Never Forget You', 'Just Hold On', 'Scared To Be Lonely', 'Something Just Like This', 'Get Low', 'Friends' and 'Happier' are now included under their respective years. Next project, note to self...the #1s from 1991-2010 don't have the chart date of the week they reached #1. Will do that along with the 2020 update unless someone else would like to look up those dates

This is now updated to the final chart week of 2020! Only 13 British/Irish chart entries in 2020, the lowest since 2009. And it would've been 12 under the old criteria which would've excluded 'Know Your Worth'. Oh well, we're almost guaranteed to have had an increase in 2021.
Also, now every #1 has the date that it reached #1. 2021 entries coming up next, as always volunteers are welcome x |
