So they're just combining all the versions together?? The OCC don't do that I'm sure, though the other versions have negligible sales here anyway.
Yeah, they must be. Don't know if they've done it in past years though, as I don't think it had re-charted before apart from 2014. It was probably arbitrarily excluded last year as it didn't chart despite doing well on Spotify.

See Dirca's posts above wink.gif It's not that the Band Aid 30 version is popular, but that ARIA have a habit of mis-labeling versions. At the moment, the original is #28 on Spotify (no other versions are top 200), and on iTunes:

39. Original
198. Band Aid 30
321. Original
339. Original
429. Original
934. Band Aid 20

So probably at least 90% of its units are coming from the original.

Ah, that makes much more sense. Still seems odd to put them all together when each one has different line ups, even if they all use the Band Aid name (with slight variations per release).

With 6 straight weeks at #1, "thank u, next" is now locked in as the 3rd longest running #1 of the year, which is as high as it'll go because there's one week left and "Youngblood" has a 2 week lead on it. The other reason is that it probably won't be #1 next week. Sales and streams are still respectable but she's been overtaken on both counts by Post Malone, who looks to score his 3rd #1 hit with "Sunflower", which just climbed to #2, meaning at present he has had 3 #2 peaking hits in 2018. Mariah Carey broke Australia's daily streaming record on Christmas Eve (not Christmas Day, because I suspect Spotify doesn't partition Australia's daily data off at a logical point; most Christmas songs lost streams today). Nonetheless she'll put in a good effort and looks to get her highest position since 1994. This week she reaches #10 which is only the 2nd week this decade she's spent in the top 10. What you wouldn't realise through all this is that this week "Shotgun" returned to #1 on sales, boosted in no small part by iTunes' then promotion of its top selling songs of the year, placed in order of their current position on the chart so it looked like "Shotgun" was #1 when really there's no way it would have accumulated sales fast enough. Nonetheless it's still #1 now so it's not going away in a hurry. There's not much else to note as much of the country seems pretty settled on not listening to much music that isn't already 5 months old, however Ariana Grande does score two top 50 entries this week, firstly new single "imagine", and secondly "Santa Tell Me" which reaches the top 50 for the first time ever this year. Khalid also adds to his immense tally of the top 50 hits with "Saturday Nights", because it promptly replaced "Suncity" on Hot Hits Australia. This week's winners of Christmas entry bingo are Justin Bieber & Brenda Lee, the latter is charting for the first time since 1960 where she reached the top 60, so perhaps she'll reach an all time new peak next week, much depends on how many Christmas songs ARIA let on the chart next week and how much space they take up.

"A Star Is Born"'s soundtrack notches up a 9th week at #1 securing the status of longest running #1 of the year. Or perhaps not necessarily as "The Greatest Showman" is #1 on iTunes right now so maybe it has the power to get its own 9th week at the top. If you were perhaps livid, that there weren't enough soundtracks in the top 10, Bruce Springsteen's Netflix special has the answer and debuts at #6. Given that there's only one studio album in the top 10 and it's from Michael Buble, one could anticipate a massive changing of the guard in the coming weeks. In the meantime, take a glance at what people found under their Christmas trees yesterday. The only debut I can foresee next week is 21 Savage's new album and that's only if ARIA counts its streams correctly, which I will forever be skeptical of.

Sort of thought A Star Is Born would have done what it's done here in the UK!

I might have made an underestimation but it's also considerably easier to say that ARIA still don't collect streaming data correctly which is fantastic news for Mariah Carey whose seasonal classic "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was streamed relatively infrequently on Thursday. Whether or not that made the difference, I cannot say but I can say that we have a new #1...from 24 years ago. This is a relatively historic moment although it is neither the oldest song to reach #1 ("Unchained Melody" took a little longer) or the longest chart runner to reach #1 ("Perfect" took a little longer). What Mariah can lay claim to however is being the first and possibly only (there's not much time left) artist to score a #1 hit in the past 3 decades, she only has 3 #1 singles between "Fantasy", "We Belong Together" and now "All I Want For Christmas Is You", so she's efficient in that regard. Suffice to say, ARIA is surely dying of embarrassment that they didn't rig the chart and let this man take the #1 instead. If you are pining for "Sunflower" to reach the top, it is poised to do so next week despite very low Hot Hits AU placement which is hampering its streaming lead a little. Now I have to talk about the elephant in the room because every single song climbing in the top 50 is Christmas related. Even Hilltop Hoods' "Leave Me Lonely" (which is headed for the top 20 next week) name drops Santa Claus. Regular followers of this thread will know ARIA is very bad at including everything in the chart, and I can now confidently say that there are about 10 songs missing from the top 50 this week, but they have extended the olive branch further than ever because there are loads of festive entries this week. There's no real discernable logic to it because there's a mix of very old and very recent, but even Christmas songs that have charted on release this decade from Michael Buble & Coldplay have been left out. Tony Bennett has the least appropriate entry with "Winter Wonderland" as it is currently a summer hell hole in Australia, but I have the suspicion that Tony Bennett is now the oldest living artist to debut a new song on the chart, there are only a scarce handful of living former charting artists who are older than him after all, and I'm more than pretty sure Doris Day hasn't charted this decade. But to counter Tony we have a sole local entry from Paul Kelly, and his classic song about a prisoner writing back to his family for Christmas. For no reason whatsoever, Post Malone's "Wow." is missing from the chart but two time collaborator 21 Savage at least enters. Lastly we have another rare act of belated competence brought on by systemic sexism. A year ago, one of the biggest national festivals, Falls Festival copped a lot of flack when their opening lineup announcement housed a total of 12 women, not female acts, women altogether. Additionally, only Julia Stone could lay claim to being billed above boomer icon Daryl Braithwaite who was there because of the ironic meme song. 3 of those 12 women were Camp Cope who actually changed the lyrics to their song "The Opener" during their performance to lambaste the festival organisers for it. Do you think they learned from it at all? Haha, nope. True to the song's original lyrics, the line up is not at all short of female openers to fill the quota, meanwhile Lauren from CHVRCHES wins this year's lottery for the one woman who is seen as more noteworthy than a meme, because every other woman is billed below 2018's boomer meme, Toto. The one positive I can say about this is that with the festival running at the moment, someone at ARIA has seen fit to finally fix "Africa"'s Spotify streams, which I suspect would have seen it regularly popping up in the top 100 but they weren't being counted at all. It may well become a chart fixture in 2019 because it's not like ARIA would ever remove streams from something (unless it's "XO TOUR Llif3").

I really have no idea what the margins are like but "A Star Is Born" just keeps outpacing the competition. Amazingly this makes for the 2nd longest unbroken run at #1 in the entire decade, only being Adele's "21" which managed 11 consecutive weeks at the top at one stage (it would have been 20 in a row if not for Gotye). There's no reason it can't keep going though because it's not like there are any major new releases and if there were, people probably wouldn't buy them anyway. The most noteworthy thing this week is Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas" returning to the top 10 which it has not reached since 1994 despite numerous returns to the chart. For the second year in a row, Michael Buble is unable to get higher than #3 with "Christmas" and this could very well be the first time he misses the End Of Year Albums top 10 list, which he has reached 7 years in a row. I expect these lists to come within a week and I'll post them in this thread when I get them. The only debut this week comes from 21 Savage's actually very good new album which I suspect will sadly get lost in the shuffle.

At least next week's chart won't have any missing songs that aren't by Tyga or XXXTENTACION...maybe.

Well at least ARIA didn't fix the top end of the chart and Mariah got her deserved #1, but other than that yep they're still worse than the OCC.

Surprise (to me), the End Of Year charts are out. I have hastily typed them out as they appear so there may be typos but I've also left in ARIA's own typos so Bia Miller will be happy

1. 5 Seconds Of Summer - Youngblood
2. Drake - God's Plan
3. Ed Sheeran - Perfect
4. Dean Lewis - Be Alright
5. Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line - Meant To Be
6. Post Malone - I Fall Apart
7. Post Malone Feat. Ty Dolla $ign - Psycho
8. Maroon 5 Feat. Cardi B - Girls Like You
9. George Ezra - Shotgun
10. Benny Blanco Feat. Halsey & Khalid - Eastside

It has been expected but it's pretty big news that we have an Australian #1! In the 30 years of ARIA, this has only ever happened 3 times, in the 3 consecutive years of Australian Idol hype from 2003 to 2005. Considering the nature of that, 5 Seconds Of Summer can be commended for capturing the nation in a wider sense than ever before. It's also an improvement on last year with 11 Australian entries compared to 9. I have often been critical of how poorly emerging Australian artists are supported on Spotify, and to put that into perspective, of those 11, only Hayden James can lay claim to having never made the End Of Year top 100 before. However his previous single "NUMB" still has more streams than "Just Friends" so that might just be a case of better timing. I am not sure what the record is, but Post Malone has managed 8 entries in this top 100, his 8th is helped by the curious lack of "Taste" by Tyga and "Jocelyn Flores" by XXXTENTACION, quite peculiar unsure.gif Winning the lucrative honours of lowest peaking song in the list is A$AP Rocky & Imagine Dragons, though in the latter's case, "Believer" scored its #33 peak on debut, and that was its only ever week in the top 40. I think ARIA included the 01/01/2018 chart in the 2017 list so it actually spent the entire year outside of the top 50. Khalid's "OTW" makes the cut despite ARIA not counting its streams correctly for months, I don't know where it should actually be ranked at all. "Flames" by David Guetta does not have the same luck.

For albums, it's The Greatest Showman at #1, also not a surprise as it has spent almost every week of the year just slightly outselling nearest competitor Ed Sheeran. If you are wondering what the last Soundtrack to top this list is, it is Moulin Rouge from 2001. Of particular note, this year ends Michael Buble's 7 year streak of reaching the top 10 with "Christmas", in fact he's all the way down at #30. Perhaps having a new album stocked at the front of JB HiFi instead of the old one prevented a lot of impulse buys. I can't imagine what's missing from this list aside from XXXTENTACION's "17". Sheppard, The Amity Affliction, John Butler Trio & Paul Kelly attain the not-so esteemed honour of having the only #1's not to make the cut, despite the latter still maintaining in the top 50 currently.

Also as I like to say every year, thanks to all who tolerate and read my nonsense which I've somehow been doing now for 4 years. Unsurprisingly as I have already started the 2019 thread, I've no plans to stop at the moment!

Surprised Gotye never managed to be EOY #1 for the Aussies but it appears to be a case of bad timing as he was #2 in 2011 and #40 in 2012.

The very small number of Australian artists in the EOY isn't surprising though, even before Spotify most of the EOY list was world hits.

Yeah it was timing in the broad sense for Gotye. Undoubtably he had the highest selling single of the second half of 2011, but LMFAO's 4 month headstart was impossible to assail, and even when all was said and done, "Party Rock Anthem" still was a slightly bigger hit (though Gotye is surely catching up now through better catalogue sales/streams. Neither has had their certification updated in years).

The Australian thing is really just a lackluster effort on almost all the bigwigs involved. Setting aside streaming, the big commercial stations are so lethargic about it. Not that it was a surprise, but Rush recently found a metadata source of Nova's daily playlists, and we realised that every single day they cram heaps and heaps of Australian songs...at around 8-10pm when nobody is listening, just so they can meet the enforced 20% Australian music quota. During the day time they can sometimes go 3 hour stretches only playing 1 or 2 Australian songs all up. It's absolutely pathetic. triple j on the other hand play roughly 50% Australian music and when the Hottest 100 rolls around, it shows that the audience very much takes to it in proportion and then some. Australian music can't prosper if nobody is hearing it.

"Locomotion" actually I think was the #1 single of 1987, that didn't come to mind when I posted it but the problem is that ARIA only has been operating the charts since 1988, so she missed the cut-off, so to speak tongue.gif

Triple J is like Radio 1 in that respect, supporting a lot of local acts and a fair few songs that have no hope of being chart hits. And they also have their Live Lounge equivalent. Of course though it's easier to meet quotas for British music here because there's a lot more of it that charts well.

If only Radio 1 had a true Hottest 100 equivalent though, there is the Annie Mac hottest record EOY vote but that has barely any hype and airtime.
