QUOTE(http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-38402974)
South London rap prodigy Nadia Rose has taken fifth place on the BBC Music Sound of 2017 list.
The 23-year-old, who has won praise for her whip-cracking, witty wordplay, hails from Croydon and is the cousin of grime artist Stormzy.

The annual award aims to showcase the best new artists of the coming year, and is voted for by 170 DJs, music critics, radio producers and writers.

"That is epic!" said Rose on learning she had made the top five.

"Being on the longlist was an honour. This is just... wow. I really wasn't expecting that."

Rose, who began making music in her spare time while working in a betting shop, has scored viral hits with songs like Skwod and Tight Up.

She describes her sound as "really bassy, full of fun and full of energy".

'Tight Up' sounds really good, and of course she was the vocalist of Kideko & George Kwali's 'Crank It', great to see her make the top 5 biggrin.gif

Well hello there R1 discussion thread! laugh.gif

For those who are new to this thread, this is basically the place where we discuss Radio 1 and all it's good things including TOTD's and many other things. Look out for my weekly posts of R1's Best New Pop show hosted by Cel Spellman every Sunday, it does get quite a bit of discussion.

And to kick things of with the TOTD's this year:
TOTD 2nd January: Nadia Rose - Tight Up (feat. Red Rat)

TOTD's in the first week are normally from BBC Sound Of artists, a bit awakard this year because you hear the TOTD's on the first from Clara's show rather than Adele's show and that the fact that a Sound Of artist will picked over Major Lazer & Nicki Minaj or Ed Sheeran. rolleyes.gif

Here's the full 2017 Sound Of list:

· AJ Tracey

· Anderson Paak

· Cabbage

· Dave

· Declan McKenna

· Jorja Smith

· Maggie Rogers

· Nadia Rose (5TH PLACE)

· Rag ‘n’ Bone Man

· Ray BLK

· Raye

· Stefflon Don

· The Amazons

· The Japanese House

· Tom Grennan

I thought Snakehips would've been Top 10 too considering that is still hammered laugh.gif

Good to see Fade in the Top 20 though!

Yeah, I'm not surprised either to see it so high up the list. I've mentioned it before, but for a song that wasn't even a hit, Radio 1 seem to be obsessed with it, and I still hear it pretty much once a week on R1, it all seems a bit bizarre! They do get like that with certain tracks though, a couple of years ago it was M83's 'Midnight City'.

Posted by: Mango 2nd January 2017, 01:07 PM

Interesting that there's so little rock or indie representation in that Top 20, just 'Stressed Out' at #4 and 'Good Grief' at #19. I'm sure five years ago there would have been many more guitar-based tracks in the higher regions of that list.

A couple of schedule changes to remind you and that is Annie Mac is on maternity leave so MistaJam is filling in for her on Monday-Thursday and Danny Howard is doing Friday night's. Both will continue their other regular shows.

Also some changes to the Residency shows:

QUOTE
BBC Radio 1 today announced the new line up for BBC Radio 1’s Residency - the strand that brings listeners the biggest names in dance music, from the underground to the arena - with Deadmau5, Jessy Lanza, Eats Everything, Helena Hauff and Metrik joining the Residency team.
Radio 1’s Residency incorporates two shows on a Thursday night between 10pm-midnight, and midnight-1am, featuring some of the freshest DJs and producers from the UK and around the world.

Kölsch and Will Atkinson will continue to form a part of the line-up of DJs on rotation, as will Logan Sama who continues with an extended slot.

The new line-up marks the end of Steve Angello, Oliver Heldens, Heidi, George FitzGerald and Louisahhh’s regular slot on BBC Radio 1’s Residency.

The new line-up is as follows:

1st Thursday of the month, beginning 5 January

10pm - Deadmau5
12midnight - Will Atkinson

2nd Thursday of the month, beginning 12 January

10pm - Kölsch
12midnight - Helena Hauff

3rd Thursday of the month, beginning 19 January

10pm - Logan Sama
12midnight - Jessy Lanza
4th Thursday of the month,
beginning 26 January

10pm - Eats Everything
12midnight - Metrik

Deadmau5 says: "I am very excited to bring mau5trap and friends to BBC as part of the Radio 1 Residency. You can expect a selection of songs I’m playing out, songs from artists I like, songs from my label, songs not from my label... maybe even songs from me. See you on 5 January!"

Jessy Lanza says: “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Radio 1 residency line up for 2017. I can’t wait to share the music I’m listening to and excited about.”

Eats Everything says: “I'm pretty speechless that I have been asked to host my own show on Radio 1. It's fairly surreal and a bit of a shock. My first actual introduction to dance music was the Pet Shop Boys show on Radio 1 in the very early nineties and I have been listening to Pete Tong since I was 13 - so now to say that I might see him in the Radio 1 Canteen and perhaps share a cup of tea with him after we have clocked in is mindblowing. I promise to try and bring good music, some questionable humour and a silly accent to the airwaves.”

Rhys Hughes (Head of Programmes, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra) says: “I’m delighted to welcome Deadmau5, Helena Hauff, Jessy Lanza, Eats Everything and Metrik to the Radio 1 dance family – yet again illustrating we are the high water mark of global DJ talent.

“I would like to thank Steve Angello, Oliver Heldens, George FitzGerald and Louisahhh for their contribution over the last year. I would also like to personally thank Heidi for her fantastic dedication to Radio 1 over the last eight years.”

Yeh only 4 in the top 20 for me - Twenty One Pilots, Lukas Graham, Christine and Bastille.

I for one love Protoje and am happy it's in the top 10 - great song from an underplayed/supported genre. Radio 1 have always had their own mind when it comes to music support and I think it's a good thing and they don't always support 'hits', again a good thing!

TOTDs have returned.

RAYE wub.gif love her so glad she came top 5

Posted by: Danuary 4th January 2017, 12:06 PM

Raye should have a big 2017 hopefully. Probably the person with the most chance of UK success from this year's list, Rag'n'Bone Man aside.

TOTD 5th January: Rag'n'Bone Man - Human (Acoustic) (BBC Sound Of 2017 Artist #2)

Really surprised he's not number one artist considering the success of the song..

...And the winner of the BBC Sound of 2017 is....

DECLAN MCKENNA!!!

Posted by: Mango 5th January 2017, 02:26 PM

I wonder if Starley and Jax Jones will get playlisted tomorrow? I'm pretty sure they'll throw Ed straight on the A-list, though they probably won't playlist Major Lazer right away.

I think the predictions posts died because it got harder and harder to predict who they were going to playlist and when. Even now, they're quite random with how early or late they add songs to the playlist.

Posted by: Danuary 5th January 2017, 03:40 PM

Jax Jones will definitely be C-listed tomorrow, I heard Clara Amfo play it on her show today and they're really hyping it up especially with Sound Of artist RAYE being on it.

So I guess they're going to playlist Starley after all this time! I thought they'd have Ed's tracks as TOTDs this weekend though.

Posted by: Danuary 8th January 2017, 03:59 PM

they're probably saving the Ed tracks for the weekdays when more people are listening.

Posted by: JosephStyles 8th January 2017, 04:03 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't bother with making the Ed tracks TOTD I must say, considering they're getting A list rotation from the get go! Could be wrong of course but I guess they might want to share out the TOTDs to songs that need it more?

Posted by: TMD_24 8th January 2017, 04:11 PM

Normally now R1 don't TOTD tracks that are on the playlist. The only exception was the BBC Sound Of 2017 artists who already had a song on the playlist if they finished in the top 5.

Calum Scott - Rhythm Inside

Posted by: M4NG0 12th January 2017, 12:16 PM

Interesting that they're potentially going to support Calum's second single, when they only begrudgingly supported the first

Posted by: liamk97 12th January 2017, 12:41 PM

I though 'Rhythm Inside' had been and gone a couple of months back. Regional stations where I live have been all over it for ages and they're usually waaaay behind when it comes to supporting new music (best example was them playing 'brand new' music from The Chainsmokers last month - it was 'Closer').

I think R1 are just testing 'Rhythm Inside' before they decide to support it or not.

I don't think they'll playlist it seeing as it's flopping bigly (#192 on iTunes currently) and they weren't huge on DOMO.

Taking to the stage this year will be:

Badshah feat. Aastha Gill
Naughty Boy feat. Kyla
Steel Banglez presents Mist, Mostack, Abracadabra, Haile (WSTRN)

Asian Network recently became part of the BBC’s youth radio stations under the direction of Ben Cooper, and for the first time ever Asian Network Live will be triplecast - broadcast across the BBC’s youth radio stations Asian Network, Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

Hosted by the Asian Network DJ family including Tommy Sandhu, the event, which represents the best in Asian music as championed by the station, will see some of the hottest acts on the British-Asian and global music scenes come together on one stage for one night only.

Naughty Boy returns to perform new material featuring Kyla and Indian hip-hop superstar Badshah makes an exclusive UK performance, including a new track with Major Lazer-collaborator Anirudh. UK Hip-Hop and Punjabi music producer Steel Banglez will also present some of the most exciting UK artists including MIST and MoStack (both ‘Hot For 2017’ artist tips on 1Xtra), Abra Cadabra and Haile from WSTRN.

The event, now in its second year, is open to all ages and promises to be bigger and better in 2017 with more special guests to be announced. Tickets for Asian Network Live will go on full sale on Wednesday 11 January at 8.10am in Tommy Sandhu’s show on BBC Radio Asian Network.

Badshah says: "I’m honored to represent India and bring the magic of Bollywood this year to the BBC Asian Network Live in London at the event at the Apollo in Hammersmith. I had an amazing time at the first ever BBC Asian Network Live last year and can't wait to see you all on 25 February and bring the biggest party of the season to you.”

Tommy Sandhu says: “Now that it's 2017, the countdown feels like it's officially on to the best Asian music spectacular in the world. Last year was bigger and better than anyone could have expected and we'll be bringing the party to Hammersmith again ... get ready!”

Mark Strippel, Head of Programmes, Asian Network, says: “Asian Network Live is a unique global culture-clash that brings together some of the best British and international artists of South-Asian origin, in collaboration with artists that inspire our young and growing audience. I’m particularly pleased that we have Badshah and Naughty Boy back to headline Asian Network’s flagship event, and that we’ll be joined by Radio 1 and 1Xtra for the first time.”

For the first time ever, Asian Network Live will be triplecast across Asian Network, Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Asian Network will be covering all of the live build-up from 6pm, followed by the live show from 7.30pm -11pm which will also be broadcast across Radio 1 and 1Xtra, hosted by Asian Network’s Yasser. The show will also be live streamed on Asian Network’s website and BBC iPlayer, with highlights available on Asian Network’s YouTube channel, BBC iPlayer and Red Button.

Only interested in Naughty Boy, WSTRN & Zack Knight. The rest will probably listened to by 1Xtra viewers.

On the Callum Scott saga, I don't even believe Dancing On My Own was even a proper single. It was more of a cover song that wasn't intended to suddenly storm the charts, it was more of a taste of what he can do to songs and R1 was forced to support it late due to the success of it.

Rhythm Inside is to me the first proper single from him so I have high hopes that this will get playlisted and will stay on longer than Dancing On My Own.

Hottest Records:
12/1/17: Syd - All About Me
13/1/17: Detlef - Swagon (feat. Ossey James)

Next week's Hottest Record's will come from Maggie Rovers (Monday) & Mallory Knox (Thursday) plus unannounced Hottest Records on Wednesday & Friday. I Don't think there will be a HR on Tuesday due to the Future Festival.

Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Jammin')

(Tuesday) Innuendo Bingo will feature Will Best on Tuesday & Conor Maynard on Thursday while on Greg's Show, Richard Osman is a guest on Tuesday, Scott & Chris will be Raging Against The Answer Machine on Wednesday & Dev Patel joins as a guest on Thursday.

TOTD 14th January: Donae’o - Black (feat. JME & Dizzee Rascal)

Posted by: mdh 14th January 2017, 09:38 AM

Was really good to see The Chainsmokers get full support from the off, that's given it a few nice boosts to be comfortably in the iTunes top 10 - they've really handled the promotion of Paris well so far.

TOTD 15th January: Bebe Rexha - I Got You

Glad this is finally being pushed, I can see this having more success than No Broken Hearts.

Posted by: mr_pmt 15th January 2017, 10:32 AM

I'm willing Bebe to get support and have a hit with this now, it's grown on me.

R1's Best New Pop 15/1/17:

4:45pm-4:58pm:
The Chainsmokers - Paris
Nick Jonas - Chainsaw (Sluggo X Patrick Russel Remix)
Sia - Move Your Body

5:46pm-5:57pm:
Matoma - Heart Won't Forget (feat. Gia)
Snakehips - Dont' Leave (feat. MŘ)
Kris Kross Amsterdam & Conor Maynard - Are You Sure (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

Bold = New Entry

What a messy show this was. Instead of doing at 5pm-6pm as normal, they played them at a 13 minute window at 4:45pm-4:58pm then played normal music until 5:46pm and then continued Best New Pop until 6pm. It was an awful idea as it was an easy chance for viewers to turn off with them expecting them to have a full show from 5pm-6pm, what it meant was the show was stupidly split and overall had a reduced time which meant we had very little amount of songs played and it was pretty much the same set of songs last week. Please Radio 1, keep this utter shocking idea for this week only. banghead.gif

What was odd was Most Played ran as normal so I don't know why they had to fiddle with Best New Pop. I mean why don't they ruin Most Played while they are at it... drama.gif

I think they're moving Best New Pop to Adele's early morning show now - which makes no sense because it seemed quite popular at that time of day?! wacko.gif

But was is interesting is that Cel mentioned that they would still be playing Best New Pop songs on that show so it feels like now we are just listening to the same show in a really early slot which nobody is going to listen (Neither me) to because the casual viewer would be asleep and not aware that it was on. As well as that, Cel's show target more of the CBBC audience who watch him present the chart on a Friday so moving it to 5am means you would lose pretty much all of the under 16 audience who would only listen to Cel.

Indeed what this means is that Best New Pop is cut to 30 minutes and you cut the amount of songs played by more than a half which means less chance of hearing artists you don't know about. I don't why they had to change this as the format was perfect for a Sunday afternoon listen and makes Cel's show even more pointless now. coffee.gif

Posted by: lewistgreen 16th January 2017, 05:25 PM

That Sunday afternoon slot is just crying out to be a request show or something.

Posted by: M4NG0 20th January 2017, 11:02 AM

Meant to post this at the end of last year but never got round to it. Here's a list of longest-playlisted songs from last year:

10 weeks
Justin Timberlake - Can't Stop The Feeling
Kanye West feat. Post Malone & Ty Dolla $ign - Fade
Kungs vs Cookin' on 3 Burners - This Girl
Major Lazer feat. Justin Bieber & MŘ - Cold Water
Sia feat. Sean Paul - Cheap Thrills
The Chainsmokers feat. Daya - Don't Let Me Down
The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey - Closer
Zara Larsson - Lush Life

11 weeks
Bruno Mars - 24K Magic
Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye
Drake feat. Rihanna - Too Good
Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out

12 weeks
The Weeknd feat. Daft Punk - Starboy

15 weeks
Drake feat. WizKid & Kyla - One Dance

'One Dance' spending that long on the playlist was ridiculous, but the one real surprise for me in that list is the lack of rock/indie tracks - 'Stressed Out' sticks out like a sore thumb.

Posted by: Tinasha 20th January 2017, 11:11 AM

I'm sure at least one of Ed's tracks will manage 14/15 weeks too!

Posted by: Danuary 20th January 2017, 11:57 AM

I think 'One Dance' would've "only" got 12 weeks had it not spent months at number one, it's against R1's policy to take off records from the playlist whilst they're still #1 so they kept it on until the week it fell to #5.

Avicii - Levels
Otto Knows - Million Voices
Sugababes - Round Round
Skepta - Shutdown

At last a new Nixtape after last week's lazy efforts! Next week on the Breakfast show the guests including Dermot O'Leary & (Monday) James Arthur. I have to say that despite all the changes I slammed about the Best New Pop show, I think it's had it's best week ever. Every song played in the main show was a new entry which I think is the first time this has happened. R1 snubbed 'Hey, Soul Sister' and 'Drive By' so I'm 99% sure they'll snub 'Play That Song' too.

Posted by: Steve201 5th February 2017, 05:10 PM

I think 'snubbed' is a harsh word to use in this case BBC know that if a song doesn't suit radio 1 they can play it on another channel like 6 music or radio 2.

I like that High Contrast track - when is the specialist chart played?

Tonight's Hottest Record was -

'Rag n Bone Man - Ego'

Is Skin a single or is this?

9PM on Mondays

also I am pretty sure Skin is the single considering it has artwork as some pointed out to me

Posted by: M4NG0 8th February 2017, 09:51 AM

Skin, Grace, Ego, Human... another artist who only seems to make songs with one-word titles, like Catfish & The Bottlemen. Why? unsure.gif

Posted by: Tinasha 8th February 2017, 11:05 AM

Christine iT is track of the day.

Amazing song, better than Tilted for me and a lot more commercially appealing than Saint Claude was.

Posted by: M4NG0 8th February 2017, 11:23 AM

Yeah, iT is her best song for me too.

Posted by: cqmerqn 8th February 2017, 11:25 AM

Skin should be the next single considering it's on Hot Hits Uk

Posted by: Bjork 8th February 2017, 02:18 PM

wish Christine released Paradis Perdus, the one based on Kaney West's Heartless... think it's the only one that could be a hit... IT is great but I fear it will follow the same route as Saint Claude unless she performs it at the Brits

http://hitsdailydouble.com/bbc_radio1 revealed the BBC Radio 1's playlist for this week.

Anne-Marie - "Ciao Adios"
Christine and the Queens - "iT"
Imagine Dragons - "Believer"
Little Simz - "Picture Perfect"
Mallory Knox - "Better Off Without You"
Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - "Scared to be Lonely"
Martin Solveig f/Ina Wroldsen - "Places"

No spoiler tag, I guess, but a massive yes for "Places" and "Scared to Be Lonely", which has been the ToTD as well. Also, surprised at the instant add from "Ciao Adios", which has been playlisted by BBC Radio 2 as well.

Posted by: cqmerqn 9th February 2017, 04:01 PM

I assume that too. The list is in chronological order, so this should be the C-list. That said, if "Chained to the Rhythm" is an instant add, I guess it will be in the B-list or, even, the A-list.

R1 have two versions of these songs. The first one is the full length version which is normally played on Monday's-Thursdays and the second version is the short version, as you mentioned, which normally gets played at the TOTH/BOTH, (Top Of The Hour/ Bottom Of The Hour) where they play 3 songs and power intros, but shorten the songs to around two/two and a half minutes.

What days did listen to this song on BTW? The reason above might be the reason you are hearing a shortened version. wink.gif

https://www.musicweek.com/talent/read/bbc-radio-1-unveils-first-six-brit-list-artists/067539

QUOTE
BBC Radio 1 has unveiled the first six artists to grace its new Brit List: Anne-Marie, Declan McKenna, JP Cooper, Sampha, Stormzy and The Amazons. The initiative is aimed at providing up and coming talent with long-term playlist support.

Launched at the start of 2016, the Brit List guarantees each of the six selected artists three consecutive Radio 1 playlist appearances, vaulting them to the A-list if they haven’t previously appeared there. In addition to the playlist commitment, Radio 1 has also pledged to assist each artist in securing other editorial and live opportunities.

The six chosen acts were deemed to be at ‘just the right tipping point in their early careers to truly capitalise on the sustained support that the Brit List offers’.

“We want this project to have teeth, we want to look back in 18 months and say that we really helped make a difference to six exceptional artists,” BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra head of music told Music Week in his recent Big Interview.

Anne-Marie said: “I am so happy to be chosen as part of Brit List. Radio 1 supported my journey with Rudimental right from the start, and are now supporting my solo career, starting with a lot of airplay on my earlier singles on specialist shows through to A List rotation on Alarm. I have had the privilege of performing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend and doing the Live Lounge twice now and I still absolutely love every time I hear one of my songs on the radio. 2017 is going to be a busy year and I look forward to sharing my debut album with everyone. Thank you all so much!”

“I’m really excited to be picked as part of Brit List, I've been really fortunate in having the support of BBC Introducing since the beautiful team at Three Counties started spinning ‘Brazil’ in 2015 before anybody else knew or cared who I was,” added McKenna. “They then added it to the Introducing playlist at Radio 1 before I got signed. To now have the support of Radio 1 and subsequently many more people is a fantastic achievement for me having started out not all that long ago in the grand scheme of things, and I’m really excited about what the rest of the year is going to bring - through album one and beyond.”

JP Cooper added: "It's a huge honour to be included in Brit List. The support so far has been incredible and to have this level of commitment from Radio 1 means so much to me, I can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store.”

“Thank you so much for selecting me to be part of the very first Brit List,” commented Sampha. “Radio 1 have been such a great support over the years, it’s a real honour to be included."

Stormzy, who is set to release once of the biggest UK debuts of 2017 next week, added: "Honoured to have made Radio 1's first ever Brit List ... Thank you for supporting my journey and big up 1Xtra too who have been there from the beginning."

“We are honoured to be included on the first ever Radio 1 Brit List, as much as we have been honoured to be supported first by BBC Introducing in Berkshire and then to having our first plays on Radio 1 from the likes of Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, Daniel P. Carter, MistaJam and Greg James,” said The Amazons. “We recently had our first live Radio 1 experience at the Future Festival and it was awesome. Being included on the Sound of 2017 long list was a huge deal for us, but this feels even more special. Huge thanks and respect to Radio 1!”

why would they do that? wacko.gif Track of the Day was a far better idea, and now they're reverting back to Tune of the Week?

Posted by: TS0301 20th February 2017, 02:02 PM

Very shocked at this change! TOTD > TOTW for me, Tune of the week is a very dated idea now in my opinion, and it doesn't give as many tracks the exposure that Track of the Day did.

I guess with one criricism of TOTD for me it never felt personal for the DJ'S - so if thats their reasoning behind TOTW I am all for it

Posted by: danG 20th February 2017, 02:07 PM

yeah but do the DJs on daytime actually get to choose their Tune of the Week? If anything I'd prefer it being obvious they have no say in it rather than them giving the false impression that they handpicked the song.

Posted by: M4NG0 20th February 2017, 02:27 PM

Yeah I'd be very surprised if each DJ handpicked the song, at most they'd be given a selection to choose from. It's silly that they've reverted to TOTW if that is indeed what they've done.

Posted by: Tinasha 20th February 2017, 02:30 PM

Big weekly boosts to whoever get's Grimmy's tune of the week then. His show provides the biggest boosts, followed by Clara's. I've always noticed Greg's show doesn't provide big chart boosts despite it being the drive time show.

Do we know which are the TOTW songs this week?

Posted by: Steve201 20th February 2017, 02:48 PM

As you say it will prob help songs hold up throughout the week rather than a 1-day boost!

Posted by: mdh 20th February 2017, 02:56 PM

As far as I know, Scott's track is Unstable by Zak Abel. He was going on about it earlier.

Posted by: SevenSeize 20th February 2017, 02:56 PM

Yay for tune(s) of the week *.* I don't see what the problem is, I quite like it lol (I remember discovering some great tunes from those in the past, like the underrated classic U Got The Power heart.gif)

Posted by: HarryEzra 20th February 2017, 03:02 PM

Adele Roberts - Louis Berry - She Wants Me
Nick Grimshaw - ? not sure
Clara Amfo - Will Heard - I Better Love You
Scott Mills - Zak Abel - Unstable
Greg James TBC

Posted by: M4NG0 20th February 2017, 03:35 PM

My main issue with it is that only 5 songs a week will get a boost instead of 7 songs.

Posted by: Tinasha 20th February 2017, 03:38 PM

Poor artists who get Adele's show.

Posted by: TMD_24 20th February 2017, 04:52 PM

Surely the weekend presenters will get a tune of the week as well? It's going to make playlist additions even more difficult to predict as well now.

I'm pretty bad at predicting anyway but I'm going to do this anyway and predict that.... There will be a twist to the TOTW and that the TOTW's will be song added to the playlist. I'm doubtful though, as it wasn't always the case with TOTD's.

http://www.musicweek.com/media/read/radio-1-s-music-team-gears-up-for-new-era/067382

QUOTE
BBC Radio 1/1Xtra head of music Chris Price has told Music Week about how a raft of changes to the networks’ music team and policy will help the BBC take on increased competition, including from streaming services.

Radio 1 has suffered a number of high-profile defections to digital services such as Apple Music and Spotify in recent years, including Price’s predecessor as head of music, George Ergatoudis, now Spotify UK head of content programming. But those departures mean Price – who took over as head of music role last March – has had the opportunity to reshape the music team.

Price – who appears in Music Week’s Big Interview slot this week – said he has made the team structure “fit for purpose” by beefing up the headcount and bringing in Matt Fincham and Ryan Newman as editors, Sarah Beaumont as producer and Mel Lewis and Jade Style as assistant producers. One further AP will also be appointed, with the new team and structure allowing Price himself to spend more time on strategy and industry relations.

“The Radio 1 and 1Xtra team has never been more important than it is right now - both to audiences and the music industry,” Price said. “By devolving a bit of creative and editorial and management to those guys it allows us to work smarter as a team. It allows me to have bigger, more meaningful conversations with music industry partners and be a better competitor in this global marketplace in which we find ourselves.”

Price has also announced other changes; trimming the all-powerful Radio 1 playlist committee from 12 to 10 people as well as the return of the DJ-picked Tune Of The Week to shows, in favour of Track Of the Day. According to Price, this will allow presenters to “select one song or artist that they're super passionate about and play their song every single day of the week”.

These changes follow a raft of new initiatives since Price replaced Ergatoudis. Other changes have included moving the Radio 1 playlist to Fridays, scrapping the In New Music We Trust playlist and the recent, well-received launch of the Brit List, designed to boost new UK talent, as Radio 1 takes on increased competition, particularly from streaming services.

In this week’s issue, Price also talks about Spotify, the state of the charts – and why he’d like to take on streaming services at their own game, with a BBC music discovery service. You can read the full interview only in this week’s edition of Music Week.

Posted by: mr_pmt 20th February 2017, 08:30 PM

I honestly completely fail to see how scrapping TOTD in favour of TOTW is remotely a good thing, even when he tries to explain it in that article.

Posted by: JosephStyles 20th February 2017, 08:45 PM

I really don't see why they can't manage both? Like what's to stop all of the DJs playing those songs every day anyway, why does it have to bring an end to TOTD? laugh.gif

So according to that the DJs do get to pick the tracks although I would assume there is control of the spread of genres etc.

Interesting approach here which means at least 7 or 8 plays across the weekend which is good coverage for a song!

Posted by: mdh 25th February 2017, 02:56 PM

I hope this can help it go top 40 next week, although the reaction to this on iTunes has been rather neutral, I guess the TotD effect is never very big at weekends sad.gif

^^ That suggests that 'Happier' is being pushed as Ed Sheeran's next single? I thought it woulda made more sense to go with 'Perfect' or 'Galway Girl'.

They played How Would You Feel in the Best New Pop show a few weeks back according to this thread so I think they've just picked a random album track to play laugh.gif

Interesting to see them play Lewis Watson, he felt like someone they would've supported in his last era while he was actually signed to a major label but they didn't drama.gif

https://radiotoday.co.uk/2017/03/ofcom-publishes-draft-bbc-operating-licence/

QUOTE
BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 must play more new music to further distinguish itself from the commercial competition, under Ofcom’s new draft operating licence for the corporation.

The document says BBC Radio 2 will need to ensure that at least 40% of the music in daytime is from United Kingdom acts and at least 20% of the music in daytime is New Music, of which a significant proportion must come from new and emerging United Kingdom artists.

The regulator also proposes new peak-time conditions for news on BBC Radio 1, and news and current affairs on BBC Radio 2.

The draft licence includes full details of all proposals for radio, television and online, including a new condition for BBC Radio 5 live to ensure that the station offers live commentary, news and other programming on at least 20 sports in each year.

Ofcom proposes that the BBC must ensure that in each year at least one-third of relevant Expenditure is incurred outside the M25 area. “Relevant Expenditure” includes Expenditure on first-run originated programming, but does not include Expenditure on news or sport output. For the purpose of this requirement, “first-run originated programming” means programming which is commissioned by or for a UK Public Radio Service and has not previously been broadcast on a radio service in the United Kingdom.

Ofcom’s Chief Executive Sharon White addressed delegates at the Nations and Regions Conference in Salford, outlining the details of the new licence which become effective from 3rd April 2017 when Ofcom becomes the BBC’s first external regulator.

As required under the BBC’s Royal Charter, Ofcom has developed an ‘Operating Framework’ for the BBC, covering regulation of the BBC’s performance, compliance with content standards and impact on competition.

Ofcom says: “Our role is to hold the Corporation to account against the delivery of its public purposes, while its new unitary board will govern and run the BBC. We will carefully monitor the BBC through annual performance reviews, a ‘health check’ halfway through the new 11-year Charter, and scrutiny of the BBC’s forthcoming annual plan on how it will fulfil its requirements.

“The new Charter sets clear objectives for the BBC to serve audiences, and puts a sharpened focus on distinctive, creative and high quality programmes.

“Our draft ‘operating licence’, published today, sets clear requirements on the BBC that are achievable and affordable within existing licence fee funding, and which will uphold the quality of the BBC’s programmes”.

The closing date for responses to today’s consultation is 17 July.

Doesn't all that mean that Radio 1 have to play more British and new music during the day, which won't stop them from keeping on running the chart as they can fulfil their quota on their other daytime shows? Can't see this having an effect on the chart show (unless it means the 17:45 Newsbeat segment is scrapped which would allow R1 to have a 2 hour chart show)

Posted by: Steve201 29th March 2017, 09:23 PM

The chart will be seperate at any rate!

The new controller said they would have more British artists when he first started but all he seems to have done is change the playlist back to the way it was pre 2007 with more songs and no upfront list.

Hope so, there's some wonderful upbeat stuff on Dance Anthems like Kattison and Mark Knight that never crosses over because it's off-trend.

Hoping they add Lana/Gaga/Shawn!

Posted by: M4NG0 20th April 2017, 06:09 PM

Yeah I was thinking earlier there's so many potential new adds this week. Knowing them though they'll just add 4 songs or something unsure.gif

(can't see them supporting Pixie Lott btw)

Posted by: ♀mdh♀ 21st April 2017, 07:26 AM

Ideally they'll add Gaga, Charlie, Shawn, Lana and Luis Fonsi out of the new releases - but I can't see that happening. Fingers crossed they make an exception for this week and add them all because they're all big ones.

Posted by: Bjork 21st April 2017, 08:56 AM

Lana's impact date is May 19 (per Mw) so think it wont be added yet

Track of The Weekend 22-23 April

Shawn Mendes - Nothing Holdin' Me Back

We could get insta-adds this week from:

Kygo ft. Ellie Goulding - First Time

Maaaybe
The Vamps ft. Martin Jensen - Middle Of The Night

Posted by: TMD_24 26th April 2017, 05:00 PM

I think all these big new releases is going to make the playlist a bit of a dilemma.

and imo they should focus on playlisting the others like LADY GAGA ffs}!!!

I think these are a given:

Kygo & Ellie Goulding - First Time
Charlie Puth - Attention
DJ Khaled - I'm The One
ALMA - Chasing Highs

If they don't add Gaga this week then they'll never add her. Oh well, their loss.

Posted by: TMD_24 4th May 2017, 05:17 PM

I think DJ Khaled could probably go straight to the A-List.

Posted by: SevenSeize 4th May 2017, 07:17 PM

doing R1 playlist predix, like the good old times *.*

DJ Khaled ft. Bieber, Quavo & co - I'm The One (straight to A List?)

JP Cooper - Passport Home
Kygo & Ellie Goulding - First Time
Lady Gaga - The Cure (patience buzzjack lol)

ALMA - Chasing Highs

Kygo STIll Hasn't been added to R1!

Posted by: mdh 5th May 2017, 07:39 AM

...still no Gaga either cry.gif

Posted by: Bjork 5th May 2017, 07:43 AM

boo no Kygo, no LP and no Gaga, but of course they have to ad the 11th single from Biffy Clyro cos it hasn't been promoted enough, is the Biffy guy a member of the committee that decides the songs in R1... there's a difference between support and payola/unjustified support... not saying Biffy should be out and Gaga in, but at least play some other indie bands, sure there's more than deserve a chance instead of the 7th or 9th single from single from Biffy Clyro :/ Ridiculous

Posted by: Haarry 5th May 2017, 07:55 AM

Gaga surely has no chance with Radio 1 now. I'm pretty sure they're done with her. Which seems ridiculous because this song is clearly showing potential...

Posted by: John-James 5th May 2017, 07:56 AM

Can't believe Radio 1 are done with Gaga sad.gif Feels like yesterday that she was the biggest artist on the planet

Posted by: Joe. 5th May 2017, 08:02 AM

It's certainly true that male artists bordering on true irrelevancy like Biffy struggle a lot less than artists like Gaga. I guess, given Kygo/Ellie haven't been added yet, there's still a slim chance they'll give her some last minute support, stranger things have happened on that playlist, it's looking unlikely though.

I am surprised at the lack of Kygo/Ellie though, especially as Ellie is a R1 darling. (song has grown on me).

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 5th May 2017, 08:30 AM

I honestly think 'Perfect Illusion' has ruined her chances with R1 permanently now, unfortunately. sad.gif

Wow, do people honestly think they are going to playlist that basic Pixie Lott song is 2017?

Guys, it is hardly surprising they aren't playlisting The Cure, it is awful and her last few singles have flopped. People are over her.

I don't agree with R1's policy of dropping pure pop acts as soon as they have one flop but you can't say that Biffy Clyro are irrelevant when their album went to #1 and had good longevity. R1 listeners clearly like the Biff so I'm not surprised they are playlisting all their singles.

I think Kygo will be added next week, I can't imagine he'll be snubbed.

You really need to learn about the concept of subjectivity. Clearly not everyone thinks it's awful as it's been in the top ten of iTunes for the majority of it's two and a half week life, and is doing decently on Spotify. Other stations are loving it too. So the issue doesn't seem to be people being "over her".

Public opinion has definitely swayed over her. Don't forget there is a whole population of people outside of pop forums who don't follow the charts religiously.

It is basic and bland. It is a huge letdown for some one with four amazing albums.

Looking at it in real terms, her reputation has been in tatters since ARTPOP (4 years ago), so 'The Cure' is actually doing miraculously well considering how things have gone for her since then.

Posted by: TMD_24 9th May 2017, 04:09 PM

Matt's tune of the week is Anton Powers & Pixie Lott ''Baby''. I've noticed though they are using the original and acoustic version combined though, is any of the other stations which are playing using the version that R1 is playing or just the original version?

Posted by: Red. 9th May 2017, 04:42 PM

Just heard Greg's TOTW and I love it! Proper good catchy song!

He said she's from Sweden aswell. Another Zara Larsson?

Has R1 been playing the new Kygo/Ellie song? It's not playlisted but wondered if they've been playing it.

It's been a while since I did R1 playlist predictions. Here's what I'm thinking are possibles for tomorrow's adds.

HAIM - Want You Back
Jonas Blue feat. William Singe - Mama
Nothing But Thieves - Amsterdam
Calvin Harris feat. Future & Khalid - Rollin
(either this week or next, whenever they decide to remove Heatstroke)
Chase & Status and Blossoms - This Moment
The Vamps & Martin Jensen - Middle Of The Night
Sean Paul feat. Migos - Body
OneRepublic - No Vacancy
(assuming this is an official single I think they'll support it)
Fall Out Boy - Young And Menace
Luis Fonsi feat. Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber - Despacito
(surely??)
Liam Payne feat. Quavo - Strip That Down (though I'm not completely convinced he demands an insta-add like Harry, they might wait a week)

Posted by: danG 18th May 2017, 09:51 AM

I think Despacito will go straight to B list too, surely they can't ignore this?

Posted by: ML Hammer95 18th May 2017, 11:12 AM

Some 1Xtra playlisted songs they may support...

Lethal Bizzle ft. Skepta - I Win
Jarreau Vandal ft. Olivia Nelson - Someone That You Love
Lady Leshurr - Juice
Lil Uzi Vert - XO Tour Llif3
Shy FX - We Just Don't Care

Posted by: Steve201 18th May 2017, 08:17 PM

OOOOH! I'd love this.

I always though it wasn't outside the realms of possibility Carly could actually get another hit one day, although she'll never exactly be a key player in the industry.

Posted by: Joe. 2nd June 2017, 10:20 AM

I think the pure pop sound for Carly isn't too popular anymore. In the UK possibly, though not on streaming. in the US pure pop feels totally dead.

With that, it's mostly dependent on whether her label buy a spot on Hot Hits UK though. I don't think it's impossible.

New R1 additions:

Ariana Grande One Last Time
The Big Moon Cupid
David Guetta featuring Justin Bieber 2U
Lorde Perfect Places
Sundara Karma Explore
Mowbeck

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 7th June 2017, 08:32 AM

So with Capital and R1 playlisting it, looks like this can be classified as a truly full-on re-release for 'One Last Time' now.

I wonder if there's any chance Carly could be playlisted next week with it being tune of the weekend just now, or whether it will go the same way as Anton Powers/Pixie Lott.

Posted by: M4NG0 7th June 2017, 09:07 AM

Wow, wasn't expecting them to jump on board with OLT - presumably it will go straight to A-list.

That Bieber's getting around isn't he unsure.gif I reckon 2U must have a shot at #1 with Bieber's name on it, hopefully it's a return to form for Guetta too.

Regarding Carly, I'd say it's the latter, I'd be very surprised if they actually playlisted her.

The new single from The Killers is getting its first play on Annie Mac's show tomorrow evening. What are we thinking? Will they fully support them this era or snub them?

It's worth noting they snubbed Brandon's second solo album a few years ago so will be interesting to see.

Posted by: cqmerqn 13th June 2017, 08:55 PM

They scream C-B-B-OUT to me.

Posted by: M4NG0 13th June 2017, 09:11 PM

As much as I would love them to support The Killers' new era, I can't see it happening. They'll probably move them to Radio 2. Looking forward to hearing the new song anyway biggrin.gif

Posted by: 34yopoppicker 13th June 2017, 10:08 PM

Not sure about The Killers, these bands continue their relevance because there are so few big rock acts to replace them. No sign of new Muse on daytime R1 though yet it's on Radio 2. A lot of these bands get dual promotion on both stations when they are at a crossroads, though more and more acts are supported by both stations from the outset, particularly the more MOR/radio-friendly ones. I see the Foos are still going strong on their 400th Radio 1 era, though the new tune is way too aggressive for Radio 2 (though Dead Inside by Muse was hardly easy listening, and that got on). I'm not sure The Killers' last era was massive, but neither was the FFs'. However, The Killers have been away for longer, which makes it easier to quietly move them over, as Take That will tell you. Dave Grohl is in his 27th year of relevance. Smells Like Teen Spirit came out when I was eight!

If that is the new entries then I suspect DJ Khaled will get a B/A-List entry. Swish Swish hasn't been confirmed yet then although I still think that is a silet A-List add. Bit odd that R1 are supporting another single from The XX's latest album when their brand new song was the hottest record tonight. (Unless it's something that's not get pushed and for something else like The 1975?)

Posted by: M4NG0 6th July 2017, 11:00 PM

Possibly an insta-add for Zedd/Liam too?

Everybody's best present is back as the Summer Mixes are returning this summer as announced by Scott Mills on his show. laugh.gif

Posted by: danG 11th July 2017, 12:25 PM

"yay".

well the summer mixes are actually a great idea, I just don't like them eating into the chart show so hopefully they don't do that this year.

Posted by: liamk97 11th July 2017, 01:09 PM

I legit love the summer mixes! The only time you get to hear the likes of Madonna and Girls Aloud on primetime Radio 1. biggrin.gif

Posted by: TMD_24Quavo 11th July 2017, 01:42 PM

Confimed to be starting on the 17th July from 9:45am.

Posted by: lewistgreen 11th July 2017, 01:46 PM

And I bet there'll be another at 15:45 meaning it will cut into the chart rolleyes.gif

Although saying that, they did do the Christmas Mixes at 2:45pm on Friday's so you might have some hope.

Yes I heard him playing Most Precious Love by Blaze and Barbara Tucker a few days ago, quite a forgotten dance track from early 2006! Although I think it was part of his 'Bangers' contest on the show rather than the Summer Mix.

Posted by: Tombo 11th July 2017, 04:10 PM

What is the summer mix?

Basically it's a mix with a load of summer songs in it, plenty of old and new songs in it.

MistaJam in for Greg today has been one of the best things I've heard on R1 in ages. From 6-7 he's been live in the mix playing absolute bangers. So good!

Posted by: TMD_24Quavo 13th July 2017, 06:49 PM

He did on the Breakfast when he covered for Grimmy as well. Sensational stuff from him on all of the mixes.

Rather stupidly, R1 have done an ill-fated move in leaking the 2 of the Summer Mixes tracklist before they have even aired.

For reasons the tracklist will be listed in spoilers until they are aired.

BBQ Bangers Volume 1:
Daft Punk - One Last Time
Deee‐Lite - Groove Is In The Heart
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
Double 99 - Ripgroove (feat. Top Cat)
Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby
Swedish House Mafia - One
Fedde Le Grand - Put Your Hands Up For Detroit
Fatboy Slim - Right Here Right Now (Rendanka Mix)
Martin Solveig - Hello
Calvin Harris - We Found Love (feat. Rihanna)

Festival Anthems Volume 1:
The Killers - Somebody Told Me
Underworld - Born Slippy
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy, Hey Girl
The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
Bastille - Pompeii
Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control (Soulwax remix)
Hrad-Fi - Hard To Beat
Justice vs Simian - We Are Your Friends
Oasis - Wonderwall

One Hit Wonders Volume 1:
The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love
Lumidee - Never Leave You (Uh Oh)
Vanessa Carlton - A Thousand Miles
SWV - Right Here (Human Nature Mix)
Lou Bega - Mambo No. 5
J-Kwon - Tipsy
Crazy Town - Butterfly
Junior Senior - Move Your Feet
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Shanks & Bigfoot - Sweet Like Chocolate

Workout Mix Volume 1:
Joey Negro - Make A Move on Me
Shakedown - At Night
Breach - Everything You Never Had (We Had It All) (feat. Andreya Triana)
Tough Love - So Freakin’ Tight
Inaya Day - Nasty Girl
Lee Cabera - Shake It (Move A Little Closer) (feat. Alex Cartańá)
Armand van Helden - My My My (Funktuary Remix) (feat. Tara McDonald)
Hi_Tack - Say Say Say (Waiting For U)
Oliver $ - Pushing On (feat. Jimi Jules)
Julio Bashmore - Au Seve
Redlight - Lost In Your Love

Guessing by the airing dates there are going to be 2 new mixes per day. Grimmy is doing the first mix at 9:45am-10:15am and Scott is doing the second mix at 3:45pm-4:15pm. The first 2 mixes will be BBQ Bangers and One Hit Wonders.

EDIT: One Hit Wonder and Workout Mixes have had their tracklist released as well.

Wow at those track listings. Gonna have to make a Spotify playlist and bang these out all summer. dance.gif

First mix has now aired. On The Sly are producing the imaging side of the mixes again this year. Some more mixes have popped up although they haven't have their tracklisting leaked yet. They are Theme Songs Volume 1 and Love Yourself mixes.

EDIT: More mixes have appeared, Volume 2 of BBQ Bangers and One Hit Wonders are on there as well as the first Old Skool Mix.

The Workout Mix Volume 1 is the best! A few songs we have recently covered in the 00s dance thread there!

I am (pleasantly) surprised Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) is on the one hit wonders playlist, thought it would be too cheesy for them to put it on.

Also Blue (Da Ba Dee) wasn't a one hit wonder btw, they had another hit with Move Your Body which made #3.

They also had The Darkness - I Believe In A Thing Called Love which wasn't a one hit wonder. They had hits with Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End), One Way Ticket and Is It Just Me? as top ten hits.

Love Yourself Volume 1:

Guess it was too much of a stretch for 'I Touch Myself' by Divinyls to be on there kink.gif

Although P!nk's 'U & Ur Hand' is the ultimate modern day anthem about loving yourself laugh.gif
