The sequel, well sort of, to Knives Out, with Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc joined by new characters played by Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista and more. (Janelle was especially great!) I'd say it was worth watching but doesn't quite compare to Knives Out. Without giving too much away, the beginning/setup was a bit long, the middle was exciting and lived up to my expectations of the whole movie, but the end might be underwhelming. I'd love to know if anyone agrees or disagrees with any of that!

Benoit Blanc is great and a delight. Also I love how if you combine the plots of the two Knives Out films you get the plot of Umineko (inheritance struggles and murder mysteries but also on a rich private island), as per my usual Ryukishi07 evangelism.

Overall... Glass Onion is very on-the-nose but given the title that might be kind of the point. A rich billionaire who shrouds himself in the apparel of the genius but is clearly shallow, just like his literal sculpture. Every one of the main characters thinks of themselves as an elite, special person (hence the name 'Disrupters') but they're all painfully average and dumb. A good tell is the appearance of the 'fool's mate' chess game. I enjoyed it and I enjoyed seeing discourse from people who wanted a deeper mystery. Sometimes you don't need that.

Ironically this gives Rian Johnson a bit of a streak as a real 'disrupter', just look at people's reactions to his movies when he's done nothing less but be entirely correct.

I saw this in the cinema when it was on a limited theatrical release and then again over Xmas with my family. It’s a total riot! I actually preferred this to the first film. The cast was great, Monae was a particular highlight, and the mystery was great

I agree this one had a much longer build and set up but I really liked the way this one then unfolded. Watching it a second time with the knowledge of the first time lead to some really interesting moments and “ohhhhhhh” moments that you don’t quite catch the first time around.

Really thrilled that a third is already confirmed. It’s a great little franchise this. It doesn’t need to be groundbreaking, that’s not the point. It’s a very fun family mystery that stands up to repeat viewings because you start to unpack different things every time. And they’re directed extremely well with an incredible crew of cinematographers, costume designers etc

Watched this on Christmas Day and it was excellent! I think I preferred it to the first one too, the cast was all fantastic (Benoit Blanc & Janelle Monae were ofc. great, although Kate Hudson was properly hilarious) and it really was very fitting as a literal onion unfolding. I really liked the subtle hints throughout and how well-connected everything was in the end. The evil genius actually just being an idiot who didn't cover his tracks very well was also fun, I understand how it may be underwhelming but I think Rian's in his element curtailing expectations. The Benoit Blanc cinematic universe is one I'm fully on board with x

Ben Shapiro's Twitter review of this is wonderful if you're looking for a good laugh (even better than Logan Paul's review of Nope x)

We loved this too. Even though we knew who did it from an early point (in fact before we knew what they had actually done!!), it didn’t detract from it being another fun romp. The characters were all pretty well developed and I like that the stories are basically just modern day hilarious takes on Agatha Christie style tales.

I love these films, and I feel I could watch endless sequels. They’re so much fun, traditional murder mysteries but brought well up to date with fun little quirks and twists on the genre. I love the levels of detail that is put into them, making them so much more special.

I remember being slightly disappointed with the first one when they reveal the killer like immediately as I was expecting a full on murder mystery, without even considering there was of course more to come oops. The first is my favourite of the two as I felt this took a bit too long to get to the actual mystery for me (which I appreciate is the point) but I loved everything else about it.

The highlight was the Among Us scene (with Quiplash reference)!!

I loved this and I am really excited for more 'Knives Out' stories with Benoit! I think Rian is onto a winner with these. I love that this one was tonally different to the first a a bit more fun and even more of a social commentary than the first one.

I preferred the first, but I still had a blast and the main negative was how underused Kathryn Hahn was?! Like...!?????

I’ve heard good things about this. I need to watch the first film before hand though I think.

You could watch them either way tbh but I probably would go for the way you suggest. The second one is like a huge colourful feast where as the first is more restrained in its production - both great though

Yeah it’s not a film franchise that you need to watch in order. They’re all very stand alone with only Daniel Craig being the same actor in both movies. Quite Bond like in that respect. There’s also no like spoilers or anything in the second for the first.

So you can watch them in any order but I think Dandy’s advice is good.

This was great. havent seen the first one yet, but thoroughly enjoyed this whodunit and Janelle Monae is fab, even better than she was in the equally wonderful movie Hidden Figures, well worth digging out.
