Hey everyone, I’m Alpha. and I’m your host for this, the 8th Heat of Super Eurovision III. As my previous username O Mie gives away, Eurovision has been a passion of mine for a fair few years now and was the reason I joined this forum in 2013, so I’m delighted to be this week’s host. And with that introduction out of the way, let’s see what we’ve got in Heat 8.
This week’s countries include: perennial underachiever Portugal who managed to turn their fortunes around this year by picking up their first win and breaking the points record (and I think they would have done so even under the old system) in the process, remarkable stability in the form of Hungary with 7 consecutive qualifications and to a lesser extent Serbia who have been unlucky enough to miss out on a place in the final 3 times despite never finishing lower than 11th in a semi, and everyone’s favourite mid/late 90s superpower Croatia whose results have been rather less spectacular in recent years. As for Armenia what can I say? Qele Qele, Jan Jan, LoveWave, Fly With Me, what a spectacular run (look, just forget 2013 ok….)
Please PM your votes to me Alpha. (remember the dot!) by 23:59 on Monday 14th August and the results will take place the following evening. None of these countries have a complete set of 10 entries so please rank each country’s entries starting with 12 then 10, 8, 7 etc. as far down as it’ll go for that particular country.
Buzzjack, start voting now!

When Armenia get it right they get it SO RIGHT (and even so wrong it's right on occaision) and for all that they've got a tendency to send utter rot, Portugal ought to be a pretty interesting four-way fight between Vania, Flor de Lis, Suzy and Salvador.
And I might as well nail my colours to the mast that I am supporting Oro for the winner of the whole of Super Eurovision. The live version especially is utter beauty
You know, I was thinking the eventual champion of Super Eurovision should come from this heat too!
Bring it Kati *.*
HERE I AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM
Got 6 votes in so far, but it would be great if we could get to double figures! Reminder that the deadline for votes is 23:59 tomorrow (Monday 14th)
Voted! There were some really beautiful songs in this heat
Voted too now, none of these are amongst my favourites, I only really love one or two from each country. Hungary are pretty consistent though, whereas Portugal and Armenia either get it very right or horribly wrong.
Thank you so much to everyone who submitted votes yesterday! We've now got a very healthy 11 sets of votes which is fantastic. If anyone else wants to vote you've got 12 hours left
Voted A real mix of countries I like and countries I couldn't care less about (Eurovision-wise) here
OMG I have NO recollection of the Croatian entry 'Celebrate' from 2011, no whatsoever!
Hungary, Portugal, and Serbia have some absolute gems.
One song up there is apparently the second most played song on my ipod ever !
So after 14 sets of votes I can now say that voting is closed!
Thanks again to everyone who has taken part, it's been fascinating seeing the results change as different sets of votes have come in over the week. Just to whet your appetite, the highest score received was 132 (an average of 9.43 per voter) and the lowest was 44 (an average of just 3.14). To find out the rest of the results I hope you'll check back in later as I count down the results starting from 6pm UK time (about 4 hours from now if you're not in the UK)
I think the lowest score will be "Cipela" ("Romanca" is dreadful too but Croatia had one less song to give points to and I think the Serbian entries are rather Buzzjack friendly aside from this one major dud..) and the highest, my guess is either "Qélé, Qélé" or "LoveWave".
Right here we go, and up first is:
ARMENIA
9th // 51 points // 2013 ► Dorians - Lonely Planet
8th // 57 points // 2011 ► Emmy - Boom Boom
7th // 64 points // 2015 ► Genealogy - Face The Shadow
6th // 65 points // 2014 ► Aram MP3 - Not Alone
Nothing too surprising here as Armenia lose all their male representation as well as their only non-qualifier in the real thing, Boom Boom. Just 6 points behind Boom Boom we find Lonely Planet which very nearly scored the lowest amount possible but picked up a bit of steam at the end to avoid that embarrassment. Face The Shadow is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, but it clearly is an entry that was created for the symbolism rather than because all the individual voices work well together, so it is rather messy. And finally we lose Aram MP3 at this early stage. I thought people quite liked this one but I suppose that it got lost in the field. That’s fine by me as I don’t think it’s aged particularly well, despite only being 3 years old.
Top 5:
2008 ► Sirusho - Qélé, Qéle
2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan
2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
2016 ► Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave
2017 ► Artsvik - Fly With Me
This leaves 5 very strong and popular entries left in the running but there’s only room for 2 of them to qualify from this heat directly so who has to lose out? Did Buzzjack prefer Armenia’s more recent offerings or were the classic trio of 08-10 more to our collective taste?
As much as Face The Shadow is a bit of a hot mess guilty pleasure, that's the completely correct Armenian Top 5.
I think Lovewave will qualify, but who the second one is really open I think. Maybe Jan Jan over Qele Qele
Final results for ARMENIA:
5th // 85 points // 2017 ► Artsvik - Fly With Me
And it’s Armenia’s most recent entry that falls at the final hurdle. This is one of my favourite tracks from Armenia and I really appreciate its subtleness and the build up to the final moments. That being the case, it did take a while for me to appreciate it fully so I definitely think it’s possible for Fly With Me to grow on us all even more and place higher in future contests.
Second Chance
SC // ?? points // 2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan
SC // ?? points // 2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
And it’s consecutive entries Jan Jan and Apricot Stone that have to slum it through Second Chance. Both put up a good fight but ultimately fell short. Will either be able to make it through as a wildcard?
Direct Qualifiers
DQ // ?? points // 2008 ► Sirusho - Qéle, Qélé
DQ // ?? points // 2016 ► Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave
Which leaves up with a top 2 of Qéle, Qéle and LoveWave, which did very well and picked up high scores almost across the board. I would probably have preferred Jan Jan to be here but I have to agree that these are both fantastic entries. LoveWave in particular is a demonstration of how to use staging to maximise the impact of a track and that instrumental section is just *.*
Fly With Me deserved better, but two well deserved qualifiers
Apricot Stone to be a wildcard qualifier and Jan Jan to miss out and Armenia will have gone perfectly
CROATIA
8th // 72 points // 2008 ► Kraljevi Ulice & 75 Cents - Romanca
7th // 78 points // 2013 ► Klapa s Mora - Mižerja
6th // 86 points // 2009 ► Igor Cukrov feat. Andrea - Lijepa Tena
Believe it or not, Romanca was at one point looking at getting a spot in Second Chance! It just started to falter in the second half of votes however and in the end did finish in last place. None of these are great loses, Mižerja and Lijepa Tena are quite nice to listen to but ultimately inessential.
Top 5:
2010 ► Feminnem - Lako Je Sve
2011 ► Daria - Celebrate
2012 ► Nina Badrić - Nebo
2016 ► Nina Kraljić - Lighthouse
2017 ► Jacques Houdek - My Friend
That leaves us with this quite eclectic top 5 for Croatia...
Croatia really are slim pickings but I'd go with Lako Je Sve and My Friend as the Direct qualifiers here.
Only one of those songs deserves to qualify imo... I really hope 'My Friend' finishes 5th, I really can't think of a more shitty song in the Universe...
My Friend HAS to be through, and I'll take either of Celebrate or Feminnem as the other
Final results for CROATIA:
5th // 90 points // 2011 ► Daria - Celebrate
Celebrate ends up missing out on a spot in Second Chance after a tiebreak! I’m quite surprised it did so well as I don’t find it particularly memorable.
Second Chance
SC // ?? points // 2012 ► Nina Badrić - Nebo
SC // ?? points // 2017 ► Jacques Houdek - My Friend
The glorious and to my mind underrated Nebo and the eccentric popera entry My Friend go to Second Chance. My Friend is quite divide but it picked up enough sets of 12 points to balance out the lower scores. Nebo, on the other hand, made it through due to a more consistent set of scores, albeit without any 12s.
Direct Qualifiers
DQ // ?? points // 2010 ► Feminnem - Lako Je Sve
DQ // ?? points // 2016 ► Nina Kraljić - Lighthouse
Quite predictably we see Lako Je Sve and Lighthouse qualify pretty comfortably. Both these rather underperformed in the real thing, although in Lighthouse’s case I’m sure the Barbara Dex winning dress and slightly pitchy vocals were somewhat to blame… It still sounds glorious in studio form though.
Thank god!
Well those Croatian results are nothing to Celebrate
Whatevs, Croatia aint the ditch I want to die in.
HUNGARY
9th // 44 points // 2008 ► Csézy - Candlelight
8th // 62 points // 2009 ► Zoli Ádok - Dance With Me
7th // 70 points // 2015 ► Boggie - Wars For Nothing
6th // 71 points // 2012 ► Compact Disco - Sound Of Our Hearts
So it was Candlelight that picked up the lowest score of all this week. Ironically, only 2 people placed it last on their rankings but it got an avalanche of second to last scores and barely anything above that. Hungary also bucks the trend in that there 4 male acts still in the running. As for our other losses here, I remember enjoying Wars For Nothing and Sound Of Our Hearts quite a lot during their respective contests but Sound Of Our Hearts especially is sounding a little dated to me now and I don’t really mind them not going through. Dance With Me is just not my cup of tea but it seems to have its fans on here, picking up 2 scores of 10.
Top 5:
2011 ► Kati Wolf - What About My Dreams?
2013 ► ByeAlex - Kedvesem (Zoohacker Remix)
2014 ► András Kállay-Saunders - Running
2016 ► Freddie - Pioneer
2017 ► Joci Pápai - Origo
Another varied top 5 here. What About My Dreams is well established as a fan favourite, but was it able to rack up the votes this time?
Poor Candlelight, not a bad song, just very much 'there' and nothing to draw you to it. But those giving decent/high scores to Croatia 2008 and Serbia 2009 need to be taking a long hard look at themselves x
If Joci can potter off in 5th place, that would be fabulous
What a perfect top 5!
Final results for HUNGARY
5th // 99 points // 2013 ► ByeAlex - Kedvesem (Zoohacker Remix)
Indie pop entry Kedvesem just misses out here by a single point. I find this quite sweet actually and the staging worked well at the time to further cement this impression.
Second Chance
SC // ?? points // 2016 ► Freddie - Pioneer
SC // ?? points // 2017 ► Joci Pápai - Origo
Hungary’s two most recent entries end up in Second Chance. I especially like Origo, rap entries aren’t normally my thing but this is just so captivating. Pioneer is a little basic but still enjoyable enough.
Direct Qualifiers
DQ // ?? points // 2011 ► Kati Wolf - What About My Dreams?
DQ // ?? points // 2014 ► András Kállay-Saunders - Running
Kati takes her rightful qualification spot, thank goodness! Joining her is Running which is probably the closest Eurovision comes to ‘chart music’, Euphoria aside.
I hope Freddie can take a second chance spot
PORTUGAL
8th // 60 points // 2011 ► Homens Da Luta - A Luta É Alegria
7th // 74 points // 2012 ► Filipa Sousa - Vida Minha
6th // 81 points // 2015 ► Leonor Andrade - Há Um Mar Que Nos Separa
On to one of my favourite countries now. I have a real soft spot for Portugal and I must admit that I don’t even mind A Luta É Alegria, in a guilty pleasure kind of way. This is another divisive one that has a few dedicated fans but many who are rather less convinced. We also lose Filipa and Leonor in this first section, who got rather overlooked by most voters (in the real thing as well…). I feel sorry for Leonor who has a very good voice but a song that would fit perfectly into Germany’s 2015-17 trio of nice but beige entries.
Top 5:
2008 ► Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas)
2009 ► Flor-de-Lis - Todas As Ruas Do Amor
2010 ► Filipa Azevedo - Há Dias Assim
2014 ► Suzy - Quero Ser Tua
2017 ► Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois
Definitely the correct top 5 for Portugal here. Even though I’m not a fan of Salvador he did break the points record after all
I predict Salvador and Suzy to qualify. Flor-de-Lis and Filipa to second chance
Final results for PORTUGAL:
5th // 87 points // 2010 ► Filipa Azevedo - Há Dias Assim
Poor Filipa came so close! This has a really glorious retro touch to it and it shows how strong Portugal is that it’s only my 4th favourite song here.
Second Chance
SC // ?? points // 2008 ► Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas)
SC // ?? points // 2017 ► Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois
This year’s winner Salvador can’t replicate his success here, falling victim to the Second Chance round. He’s joined by Senhora Do Mar, the first of Portugal’s trio of qualifiers from 08-10. I’d imagine both of these probably have a chance of doing well if they can make their way through as wildcards
Direct Qualifiers
DQ // ?? points // 2009 ► Flor-de-Lis - Todas As Ruas Do Amor
DQ // ?? points // 2014 ► Suzy - Quero Ser Tua
UAUAUÉ !
Last time we did this (back in 2015) Suzy came 3rd but this time she powers past Vânia to claim the second direct qualification spot. Get in Suzy! Although she isn’t actually my favourite here, that honour goes to the utterly sublime Todas As Ruas Do Amor. Before the start of this round I feared this would end up in 4th behind Suzy, Vânia and Salvador so I’m delighted to see how well it did here. What a result this was, can Serbia keep up the run of amazing qualifiers?
Shock! I am glad for Suzy and Flor-de-lis, well deserved qualifiers.
SERBIA
9th // 48 points // 2009 ► Marko Kon & Milaan - Cipela
8th // 74 points // 2010 ► Milan Stanković - Ovo Je Balkan
7th // 84 points // 2011 ► Nina - Čaroban
6th // 86 points // 2017 ► Tijana Bogićević - In Too Deep
Unsurprisingly Cipela comes last. More surprisingly, it managed to get one score of 10 and another of 8! Each to their own but I can’t really see the appeal here. Ovo Je Balkan and In Too Deep never really got going while Čaroban started strongly and then slowed down towards the end of voting.
Top 5:
2008 ► Jelena Tomašević feat. Bora Dugić - Oro
2012 ► Željko Joksimović - Nije Ljubav Stvar
2013 ► Moje 3 - Ljubav Je Svuda
2015 ► Bojana Stamenov - Beauty Never Lies
2016 ► Sanja Vučić ZAA - Goodbye (Shelter)
Both Željko-written tracks through as well as strong pop tracks from Moje 3, Bojana and Sanja. Will Oro storm it as predicted or will someone else ruin the party?
I thought 'In To Deep' would've done better.
Hmm. I found "Ovo Je Balkan" annoying at first but it soon became a bop (it's the pictures of Milan in a speedo that did it x) and Tijana But if the Željko tracks end up as the top 2, can't complain there
Final results for SERBIA:
5th // 92 points // 2015 ► Bojana Stamenov - Beauty Never Lies
Drama in Serbia as the very last set of votes sent the then 5th placed song all the way up to 2nd! That is just a small idea of how close it was here, with Bojana losing out in the end. I found this quite tacky at the time but recently rediscovered it on a seemingly neverending bus journey where it sounded a lot better than I remembered...
Second Chance
SC // ?? points // 2013 ► Moje 3 - Ljubav Je Svuda
SC // ?? points // 2016 ► Sanja Vučić ZAA - Goodbye (Shelter)
I’d forgotten how much of a car crash the performance of Ljubav Je Svuda was until I watched the videos back in preparation for this round *.* I find Goodbye great to sing along to but I don’t mind it missing out too much as the top 2 here are rather wonderful.
Direct Qualifiers
DQ // ?? points // 2008 ► Jelena Tomašević feat. Bora Dugić - Oro
DQ // ?? points // 2012 ► Željko Joksimović - Nije Ljubav Stvar
Those two qualifers were the best from that top 5! <3
Heat 9 is now open http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=203750
The deadline is Sunday 20th of August @ 23:59
Here is the complete list for the Second Chance round:
Armenia 2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan
Armenia 2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
Croatia 2012 ► Nina Badrić - Nebo
Croatia 2017 ► Jacques Houdek - My Friend
Hungary 2016 ► Freddie - Pioneer
Hungary 2017 ► Joci Pápai - Origo
Portugal 2008 ► Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas)
Portugal 2017 ► Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois
Serbia 2013 ► Moje 3 - Ljubav Je Svuda
Serbia 2016 ► Sanja Vučić ZAA - Goodbye (Shelter)
Just a quick word about readjustment before we get going. As there are an uneven number of entries per country, I have taken the last placed entries for Armenia, Hungary and Serbia away and reallocated voters' points for songs ranked below them to even things up (as described in the Opinions thread). This meant that Jan Jan gained 1 point, Apricot Stone 3 points, Pioneer 1 point, Origo 2 points, Ljubav Je Svuda 2 points and Goodbye 2 points. Right, now for the results...
I hope Freddie and Inga & Anush will qualify, but I predict Salvador Sobral and Inga & Anush.
Second Chance
10th // 90 points // Croatia 2012 ► Nina Badrić - Nebo
9th // 95 points // Serbia 2013 ► Moje 3 - Ljubav Je Svuda
Armenia 2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan
Armenia 2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
Croatia 2017 ► Jacques Houdek - My Friend
Hungary 2016 ► Freddie - Pioneer
Hungary 2017 ► Joci Pápai - Origo
Portugal 2008 ► Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas)
Portugal 2017 ► Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois
Serbia 2016 ► Sanja Vučić ZAA - Goodbye (Shelter)
Poor Nebo never really stood a chance here. Ljubav Je Svuda did well with later voters but it wasn't enough to seriously challenge for a wildcard spot
Apricot Stone and My Friend would be my choices easily, realistically I'm hoping Apricot Stone can at least manage it
Second Chance
10th // 90 points // Croatia 2012 ► Nina Badrić - Nebo
9th // 95 points // Serbia 2013 ► Moje 3 - Ljubav Je Svuda
8th // 97 points // Portugal 2017 ► Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois
7th // 98 points // Serbia 2016 ► Sanja Vučić ZAA - Goodbye (Shelter)
Armenia 2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan
Armenia 2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
Croatia 2017 ► Jacques Houdek - My Friend
Hungary 2016 ► Freddie - Pioneer
Hungary 2017 ► Joci Pápai - Origo
Portugal 2008 ► Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas)
Major shock as Salvador crashes out in 8th place! Believe it or not he was actually in last place for Portugal at one points (even below A Luta É Alegria) but his voters came out in force over the weekend to get him this high. Serbia lose their second entry here as Sanja fails to cross the 100 point barrier. All 6 other entries here did get 100 points or over but for 4 of them that wasn’t enough...
Jan Jan & Senhora Do Mar to be the wildcards please!
As long as My Friend dosn't qualify, it dosn't matter who will for me.
Second Chance
10th // 90 points // Croatia 2012 ► Nina Badrić - Nebo
9th // 95 points // Serbia 2013 ► Moje 3 - Ljubav Je Svuda
8th // 97 points // Portugal 2017 ► Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois
7th // 98 points // Serbia 2016 ► Sanja Vučić ZAA - Goodbye (Shelter)
6th // 100 points // Croatia 2017 ► Jacques Houdek - My Friend
5th // 102 points // Hungary 2017 ► Joci Pápai - Origo
Armenia 2009 ► Inga & Anush - Jan Jan
Armenia 2010 ► Eva Rivas - Apricot Stone
Hungary 2016 ► Freddie - Pioneer
Portugal 2008 ► Vânia Fernandes - Senhora Do Mar (Negras Águas)
Croatia lose their second entry here as My Friend proved just a little bit too divisive to make it through. The same is probably true for Origo to be honest. Armenia still have two entries left, surely they can’t both make it through? Will Vânia and Freddie manage to stop the Armenian entries from progressing?
YES!!
Jan Jan <3 Can't believe Portugal have 3 entries through to the next round!
Thanks for great hosting Alpha!
F*** that! No word of a lie, they'd probably be my last two choices from the second chance lot. Both very overrated, I actually find Jan Jan to be hideous
Thanks for the hosting though Alpha, the way it was presented really showed me up
Perfect results apart from Serbia!
Jan Jan causing MORE Jahq tears *.*
Thanks for running this round Alpha!
Freddie should have been a Wildcard
