A quick shout out to Mattias for inspiring this thread!

We wanted to provide you guys with a little off topic area where you can discuss things that might not fit into any of the general artist/album/song contest threads, so voila magic.gif

We generally do have quite a minimal, streamlined look in this part of the site but feel free to run with whatever you want in here (within reason kink.gif). You can also direct any questions to us mods here too if you don't fancy dropping us a pm, we'll keep it pinned so it's always a direct access point and won't get lost amongst other topics etc

So let's kick this off with a bit of end of year discussion eh? What are you guys wanting to see, I'll drop a couple of spoilers here that we are planning some end of year awards for some of the best indie, rock and alternative stuff 2017 has brought us ohmy.gif we're also probably going to run a big Unknown Pleasures vs Nuggets song contest before the year is out, is that something you'd be interest in? angel.gif

This sounds good! Are you in a position to say any more? ;o I'm intrigued!

And yeah, I think this thread is better than the one I made on impulse, this way it can be anything at all rly (within reason) and not just about song contests like I had in mind.

Listening to the new Wild Beasts song. It sounds great! Shame they're splitting up soon.

I hadn't really delved into their albums before (probably should give Two Dancers a listen at least) but they had some quality singles- All the King's Men, We Still Got the Taste and 2014's Wanderlust of course!

No. x

But a similar idea I guess in that they're both general discussions about specific topics. laugh.gif

Posted by: ʟɪɴᴅs. 2nd November 2017, 02:18 AM

Nope, like I said in the first post, this stemmed from Mattias' song contest one!

Hmmm I don't see why I can't share what we've got in mind for UP vs Nuggets so far. We don't have any dates as of yet but we're keen to get it going asap so it will defo happen over the next month or two I think, we just need to work out when suits in terms of is it gonna clash with BJSC or Lounge things etc as the site tends to have a lot going on at towards the end of the year.

It's going to be mod hosted and set up pretty much like BJSC, one of us will take the UP semi, another the Nuggets one and then the other the final. Obviously there's a lot more UP entries compared to Nuggets so what we're thinking is having all 25 up winners in one semi and then the top 3 from the 9 nuggets contests. That makes it slightly uneven actually so maybe we'll have a poll or something, or compare points from previous contests to see which two runners up from UP we can add in, idk there's still some details to work out kink.gif then we'll have a final of maybe 30 songs, 15 from each (again a detail we need to work out) but it should be good and hopefully spark some interest in here again.

Posted by: M. 2nd November 2017, 07:48 AM

ooooh that sounds cool! It was honestly kind of a little dream of mine to have a contest similar to that (hence me mentioning it in that previous thread etc), to kinda celebrate old winners / other entries of all the past contests! I've always wanted to go back and hear the stuff I've not heard from these contests, one day I decided to listen to all the Nuggets winners that I didn't know at least. So thank you for running it! x

The only Beasts album I remember listening to the whole of is their recent one Boy King. The album was pretty good
I do have Two Dancers and Smother on CD, both of which I have yet to listen to. I also have Assembly on 7"
Favourite Beasts songs: Hooting And Howling, Wanderlust, Reach A Bit Further, A Simple Beautiful Truth, Get My Bang, Alpha Female, We Still Got The Taste Dancing On Our Tongues, Empty Nest

What did y'all think of the new Stereophonics album?

Posted by: Slade 17th December 2017, 11:46 PM

Could I potentially host a rate for The Beatles' '1' album sometime in 2018? They're my favourite band (and pretty damn successful!) and I was trying to think of the most accessible way for a rate to occur. This album is within the top 10 best-selling albums of the 21st century in the UK and contains 27 songs that went to #1 in the either the UK chart, the U.S. Billboard chart or both. So there are a lot of classics here that I'm sure people are familiar with! I would be dedicated to this with completed results and passionate commentaries.

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 17th December 2017, 11:53 PM

I would like to see this!! Love the Beatles!!

Posted by: Winter Wombatland 18th December 2017, 12:04 AM

I'd love this idea (and I could finally get round to listening to some of the Beatles songs I haven't heard), I'm just thinking it might be more suited to the Retro Lounge ? Ofc. I'll leave it up to you and the mods as it doesn't matter that much, I'm just thinking about the potential traffic for that forum.

Posted by: ʟɪɴᴅsʟ 18th December 2017, 12:07 AM

Yea go for it, whenever suits you Jade is good with me - thanks for volunteering! happy.gif I'm good with it happening in either forum too kink.gif

Posted by: Slade 18th December 2017, 12:08 AM

Oh yes that's a very good point Chez! I instinctively posted in a genre forum as I don't think I've seen a (non-Now!) rate in there before. Happy to host it there instead if you guys think it's better suited there and popchartfreak approves. I'm cool either way and no problem x

Anybody else here listen to metal music?
It seems to be scarcely discussed here, even in this forum.

I'm mainly into stuff from the 2000s onwards, although I do like Black Sabbath quite a lot and I enjoyed seeing them live a few years back.

My favourite band is System of a Down. I hope that they release new music soon as they have been teasing it for ages.

I'm currently listening to Korn's Greatest Hits

Posted by: Jüpiter 11th March 2018, 02:29 AM

I like a bit of symphonic, though I'm mainly a casual fan.

Posted by: Iz 11th March 2018, 08:12 AM

You're in good hands, the forum admin supports metal stanning entirely. My personal favourite is power metal, normally crisscrossed with symphonic or gothic for best results. Nightwish are my favourite band, so much so that I've considered doing a countdown of their best songs in here to the excitement of nobody. Twilight Force are a great example of recent pure power metal though, it's wonderfully campy.

Metal is such a wide umbrella and there are great bands to fill every niche, Amaranthe for pop metal, Alestorm for pirate metal (always a winner despite seeming niche), I want to get into black metal a bit more, death is alright with things like Dead By April around and of course SOAD are legends.

I mean, I don't go in for bands that are full growl, more because that's boring than anything else, but a mix of harsh and clean can be beautiful.

Posted by: danG 11th March 2018, 08:27 AM

I'm not but my brother is very much into metal. I think rock/metal fans like him just aren't interested in signing up for a music forum that is primarily for chart and pop music discussion.

He really likes Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Periphery and Steven Wilson so I recommend those I guess??

Posted by: Lindsey 🙃 11th March 2018, 10:33 AM

I'm gonna shift this thread into our pinned indie lounge topic x

Posted by: Tombo 11th March 2018, 11:24 AM

Toxicity is my fave of theirs, I like the contrast between the heavy metal of the chorus and the beauty of the lighter sounding verses, which have an amazing vocal.

Ultimate Painting have split up and cancelled the released of their upcoming album Up!. 'Tis a shame, because they made some admirable tunes like their eponymous song and Bills.

Listened to the first half of Blood Orange's 2011 album Coastal Grooves. It's really good from what I've heard. Still need to listen to the other Dev Hynes album, the one that a lot of people are hyping up (i.e. Freetown Sound)

Could I perhaps run a Grimes rate? Whenever is fine! Was thinking just singles at first but she doesn't actually have that many, however she has released a string of music videos for songs that apparently aren't singles so could include all of those, or if people have other 'key songs' they'd like to include (could I suggest 'Feyd Rautha Dark Heart' from the less well-known debut album for example xo) then they could add those. I'm cool with any format. happy.gif

any fans of The Tallest Man on Earth, he's from Sweden and one of the finest singer-songwriters of this century wink.gif he sometimes gets compared to Bob Dylan but think he's much better

think he should finally have a new album out later this year, so far he's releasing random tracks every couple months this time

his latest song Somewhere in the mountains, somewhere in New York is just gorgeous and fantastic

How do ppl feel about those threads we get sporadically where someone lists and comments on their favourite songs / albums? I feel like I wanna start documenting not only my favourite albums but the albums that have had the biggest impact on me throughout my existence (#existential)... I was thinking of doing it in my blog but that's kinda inactive and I probably wouldn't get any feedback / insight...

This idea has been brewing in my head for a while and maybe it's time to finally give birth to it ohmy.gif It would be a fun challenge.

Something, Rejoice, Hurts less, Funeral pyre, Sprained ankle, Sour breathe

TheNeedleDrop gave "You Won't Get What You Want" by Daughters a 10, his second of the year - I mean come on? The record is dragged out, boring, repetitive, quite uncomfortable to listen to and screams try-hard. One of the weakest of the year for me and for the life of me I can't think what's so good about it.

Would folks / mods be up for a rate (honestly I don't rly enjoy calling them 'rates' lol but I guess that's what they are... Would prefer like 'discussion thread which gives the spotlight to all the singles' or something lmao tongue.gif) of James Blake singles? With the new album out for nearly a month, it might be kool~ to give the spotlight to a lot of his songs and see what people think. The Grimes Rate was thoroughly enjoyable so why not happy.gif

Why thank you Bré! (I also "should" listen to The Colour in Anything more lol...) It was kinda either James, Massive Attack (who I'm seeing live next week with Elizabeth Fraser ;o) or Icelandic goddess Björk (who had an unfinished rate years ago by someone else kink.gif) but I strongly opted for James for now (I don't wanna 'hog' rates but I'd be up for doing those others at some point in future too).

saw 2 of my fav acts this week in concert,
first Ry X in Copenhagen, singer-songwriter but a bit dance-y, falsetto vocals, most famous for his song Berlin, he has a new album that is really good, the gig was short (11 songs) but very very good, really enjoyed it
then The Tallest Man on Earth in Malmo, the Swedish Bob Dylan smile.gif that's how they refer to him in Sweden, he's fantastic, especially live, he plays solo, no band no gimmicks nothing, just him and the guitar, no need for more. Incredible gig and incredible performer.

Not sure if anyone is a fan of La Blogoteque? They put all their shows available for free on Youtube including all the
Soirée de Poche episodes, which are really incredible, like the Damien Rice episode below

Headie One/Fred again have a collab on their joint EP with The xx on Friday.

Hyped for new xx, but I really don't have high hopes.

(There are also collabs on the EP from FKA Twigs and Sampha)

EDIT: Nevermind, it's just Jamie xx. Still intrigued though.

Kae (formerly Kate) Tempest has announced they're changing their pronouns from she/her to they/them - and predictably the idiots on social media are out in full force which is a real shame.

I was doing some browsing thinking what on earth happened to Rag'n'Bone Man's solo releases - last we heard was at the Brits this year he said it was more rock than his first album and influenced by Sam Fender - looking forward to it!

Okay I'm gonna post this idea here bc idk where else to put it now I'm not a mod as I'm hoping the mods/posters of other genre areas will see it kink.gif

Idk how many of you will remember years ago I hosted a Genre Forum Song Contest where each forum held polls to nominate songs that represented them that then went forward to battle it out against each other which sounds fun in theory but in reality the format didn't work as well as I had intended so it never returned laugh.gif

ANYWAY I've just had an idea of a better set up that might work if people would be interested in doing it again. Basically anyone that was interested would confirm four songs, each representing a genre forum on the site (pop, rock/alt/indie, r&b and dance) or even if it was at least 3 of the 4 idk but the host would randomly select an entry from each participant to go forward and battle it out in a final or semi finals (it would depend on the amount of entries) but the fun is that you don't know what forum you'll be repping until the semi/final is up?

I'd be happy to host it later in the year (gotta do a pfsc first) if this was something people were interested in but I figured it was worth putting feelers out anyway laugh.gif

(if someone could share this in the genre mod forum that would also be fab tyvm x)

Just had a read through the old mod thread in that forum to remind me how the first one was run, I think that was a fairly cool idea to pit forums against each other, sounds like a decent base to go off of for a new version though.

maybe this can be an impetus to figure out a rough genre forum calendar laugh.gif

I'm hoping to get my edition of pfsc up maybe tonight or over the weekend if that helps, I've got some time off in march so could maybe to gfsc then if that works

Nominees this year are:

Big Joanie
Bob Vylan
Kid Bookie
Loathe
Nova Twins
Skunk Anansie

Loathe or Bob Vylan would be my pick! Nova Twins and Kid Bookie not far behind.
