I guess I can't say this really because I haven't seen much of the competition from his other years (apart from Birdman when JK Simmons would have been my winner) but it really is crazy that he doesn't have an Oscar yet as he is a brilliant actor.

1 American History X
2 Primal Fear
3 Birdman

Three terrific performances here, he is certainly the most impressive in AHX and he completely made the film so great (I'm so glad he wasn't overlooked despite the dark nature of the film) but my favourite role of his is definitely the one in Primal Fear, his performance makes the reveal at the end even more of a jaw-dropping moment and I liked how he differentiated so well between the two personalities. He was a lot of fun in Birdman too and was my favourite character and performance in the movie but JK Simmons was untouchable that year (and I adored Ethan Hawke in Boyhood that year too!)

Primal Fear should have nabbed it for him.
