Hi,
Just wondering who you think is overdue a greatest hits/best of set. I can think of a couple of artists; Coldplay - never had a greatest hits and so many great songs Rihanna - Same as above Any others? |

I'm not sure there's the same urge for artists to make these as much anymore, they don't sell as well due to the digital age. They seem to only work for older "icons". Saying that I'd still really like them to continue being a thing, it's nice to have a collection of the biggest hits.
Rihanna Katy Perry Beyonce Justin Timberlake Justin Bieber And I'd like one from Little Mix after another studio album. |

Michelle McManus Coldplay, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Muse were the first ones that came to my mind. But yeah all those listed above too. Although a Greatest Hits in this day and age is a bit pointless really, isn't it? I can't see any Greatest Hits ever selling a million copies again (except maybe Adele when she gets round to releasing one) |

Greatest Hits sets could potentially do very well in the future due to streaming, as if let's say a Coldplay fan listens to all their hits now on Spotify, it contributes to the sales of the albums they are featured on - but if they have a GH as well it'll also count towards that.
It's already started to be a thing anyway with Best Of Bowie having claimed the #1 officially due to streaming. |

How can streaming a song contribute to two different albums though? Surely that can't be right? |

Coldplay have released a Greatest Hits album ('The Singles 1999-2006'), though it was a boxset of their singles but it was classed as an album for chart purposes. The band refused to allow it to be issued as a conventional "all on one CD" release. I can't remember if it charted but it was released in 2007.

How can streaming a song contribute to two different albums though? Surely that can't be right? I don't think it does. A stream of a song from an album has to be linked to a parent album: as far as I am aware it's not possible to connect it to two albums. I may be wrong, but it would be unfair to give a stream "two bites of a cherry" so to speak. Though in a way it already does, it both counts towards the singles and album charts. |

Actually streaming can count to more than one album. Just one of the many INSANE things about streaming in the album charts.

The ones that are always the obvious ones are Coldplay, Muse and Rihanna. Beyonce probably has enough hits also.
The ones that I always hark back to are KLF. And Kate Bush needs to do a new one as her only Greatest Hits album is now 30 years old and she's had around 10 more hits since then. Bloc Party Mars Volta Crystal Castles Ladytron They could all do with having a compilation each. This post has been edited by Colm: 20th February 2016, 12:21 PM |

Greatest Hits sets usually come out when an artist or band is losing popularity, need a break and have a couple of singles to put out but not enough for a whole album (Madonna's Immaculate Collection comes to mind here) or are looking to run down a multi-album deal.

Greatest Hits actually don't do too badly. If you look at the chart this week, hits collections from Eminem, Pink and the Beatles are still selling pretty consistently given how long they've been around. The Killers had a rebound with theirs the other year and Whitney Houston and Stereophonics usually crop up from time to time. They may not be huge hits upon release anymore but if someone is only discovering an artist then it's a great way for a casual fan to get a taste for them. They're also great for the car.
Rihanna and Coldplay are obviously the ones with the most material to make a proper greatest hits. |

Killers did go Platinum with their recent set and it's still selling. As to streaming points, I'm assuming if you chose to stream, say When You Were Young from its main album, Sam's Town, the streaming points go to that, but if you chose the same track but on the album Direct Hits, the points go to the hits album and only that?

Would love an English Shakira one, she put out a Spanish language songs greatest hits in 2002 but she's had so much success since then, it's so overdue.
