7-9
7. Bicep - Meli (II) (47-4-3-2-1-2-4-7-9-4-15-21-37-32-15-25-47-xx) [17 wks] 8. Take Van - Buzzkill (14-2-2-2-4-25-26-13-3-2-1-5-9-20-xx) [14 wks] 9. Tove Lo - 2 Die 4 (16-14-10-10-11-5-3-5-10-17-7-2-6-26-41-38-41-36-48-xx) [19 wks] 'No One Dies From Love' feels like the most vocally loved single from Tove's Dirt Femme era but I was in the quiet majority who loved the 'Popcorn'-sampling '2 Die 4' even more. Apart from the audacious sample choice, I was most drawn to the relatable lyrics and Tove's gorgeous vocal delivery especially in the 2nd verse. Following the album release, it had quite the rebound on my chart, falling just 1 position shy of #1 but the epic 19 week chart run made up for that. A recent BJSC entry of mine, 'Buzzkill' finished 11th in the contest, falling short of the top 10 in a tiebreak with Doctor Blind's entry. In what was described as the biggest footshooting of all term, my own 18 to Doctor Blind made it lose the tiebreak The track sees Take Van’s ethereal vocals wrap around an extremely fun and bouncy beat that leads to a satisfying breakdown, making you want to dance around for hours. Spotify always plays this automatically after the new PinkPantheress EP for me (with good reason, it is very similar in sound) I belatedly became a Bicep stan during the Isles era and 'Meli' was first introduced in the deluxe edition of that album in a brief 2 minute version. The release of this fully fleshed out 6 minute version was just perfection and everything I'd hoped it to be. It features sounds near the end which was described by Lewistgreen during a listenthrough as reminiscent of a dental appointment. I've never been able to unhear that comparison since :') |

4-6
4. Pretty Girl - Forever (22-5-5-5-3-1-1-1-6-7-12-22-29-41-24-30-45-40-47-xx) [19 wks] 5. Shygirl - Firefly (37-1-1-2-2-5-8-3-6-24-3-4-18-9-25-48-23-32-43-xx) [19 wks] 6. Lolahol - Lock&Key (1-1-1-2-3-2-4-23-14-16-33-32-43-38-xx) [14 wks] In sixth place, we have Madonna's daughter Lola, otherwise known as Lolahol or Lolabutthole on TikTok. I never had this on my bingo card but with the helping hand of the incredible Eartheater she released this amazing D&B banger 'Lock&Key'. It was the only song to debut at #1 on my chart this year. The music video just captivated me from the first second It finished 13th in BJSC, ending our top 10 streak #underrated Lola released an EP not long after, but nothing else on it was nearly as good as this. After being cruelly robbed of a #1 with the lengthy 'Cleo' #2 run, Shygirl got her first chart topper with the sensational 'Firefly'. Described as an artful ribbon dance, it reveals Shygirl’s inner self-reflection in experimental vocal tones and deconstructed dance melodies and exhibits a new level of intimacy and emotional depth in her songwriting. Simultaneously asserting her power and freedom and yet still longing for love, she delivers us lyrical harmonies and catchy hooks telling stories of relationships, sexual desires and romantic frustrations. Over lush production, Shygirl brings us on the journey of what intimacy is like for a woman who’s seen as ‘too hot to handle’, someone sought after and overlooked at the same time. One of my fave acts of recent times Australian DJ and singer Pretty Girl snatched a 2nd chart topper with 'Forever' which finished top 10 in BJSC (our 5th of the year ) The subtle and dreamy "Forever" is an emotionally loaded music to cry or dance to. The sound revolves around a sentient and warm-blooded breed of dance music that can stir a dancefloor as much as it can soundtrack a walk home. It received an amazing reinvention as the closing track of her recent Boiler Room set |

1-3
1. Eliza Rose & Interplanetary Criminal - B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All) (7-1-1-1-3-1-1-2-2-2-4-6-4-6-9-19-15-28-19-21-13-12-24-27-25-38-41-27-19-...) [29 wks] 2. Overmono - Bby (6-3-9-12-14-29-13-3-13-11-6-13-20-6-4-3-6-18-12-7-11-8-11-13-35-46-17-xx-1-1-1-6-11-15-15-19-25-36-xx) [37 wks] 3. Daniel Avery, Kelly Lee Owens & HAAi - Chaos Energy (28-5-8-12-6-1-3-8-9-7-6-6-24-23-6-11-12-44-49-xx) [19 wks] Daniel Avery's whimsical, mind-melting 'Chaos Energy' finishes in the bronze position and as the highest non-BJSC entry of the year. It features two big faves of mine in HAAi, and Kelly Lee Owens who does the voice note at the start. The ambient techno banger became Daniel's first number one on my chart. Overmono's 'Bby' is the only track from last year's EOY to appear again this year. It placed at #23 in 2021 and narrowly misses the top spot for 2022. I eventually caved in to sending it to BJSC where it finished 10th, causing it to re-enter and finally claim the #1 it so truly deserved. With 37 weeks, it is the 2nd longest running Kath chart hit of all time, trailing only Dua Lipa's 'Levitating'. According to last.fm, I've played the song 207 times. It's that good. Surprise, surprise, you guessed it. My #1 is Eliza Rose! This was the defining SOTY for me. Finishing 3rd in BJSC and then going on to top the UK Chart was totally surreal to follow. I remember the week it first entered my chart it had less than 1000 views on YouTube and now it has 16 million *.* I feel like this was such a win for the underground music scene, minoroties and female DJs, a landmark #1 and a song I'll always remember. I also put together this short recap video of my top 40 tracks, there's a bunch of thank yous at the end of the recap for all those who commented on and followed my chart in 2022 💞 TOP 40 RECAP VIDEO |

Firefly that was my #1 of the year, I'm still absolutely obsessed. 2 Die 4 is a banger too (with an iconic sample) and BOTA I'm such a success stan for saying this but it hugely grew on my after blowing up on the charts, one of my favourite UK #1s of the year for sure. This has been a great countdown, so much taste on display

There's a lot of these I still need to hear, but what I do like is excellent. B.O.T.A obviously a huge grower and one of my songs of the late summer. Daniel Avery's album is definitely on my listening list, but you've included some great songs, Baby We're Ascending is amazing too, that was very close to my own chart. Caroline Polachek had some great songs from a variety of genres across the year, Billions was a real standout.
2 Die 4 came up on my streaming playlist a while back, I was kind of into that popcorn sample and it's stayed in my head ever since, not her best ever, but very fun x |

Oops at the foot shooting there! 😔
Just listening to the recap now, a really strong EOY with a good mix of lesser known as well as popular dance tracks from the year. “Chaos Energy” remains as immense as the first time that I heard it and “Meli (II)” continues to evoke memories of the summer and that amazing Glasto set the duo did. Ofc Eliza was the most likely (and deserving) to be your #1, I'm so happy for her that she managed to get that huge success given the hard work and effort she has put it, you can definitely tell that it meant such a huge amount to her. It was heartening to see the rest of the community (for e.g. salute) really rallying behind both Eliza and Interplanetary Criminal as it went up the chart. Such a moment, especially as female DJ representation within dance music is worse than in the music industry in general, which is already poor. I'm hopeful that this will be an inspirational moment for all those up&coming young female DJs and producers to see that they can make it and make it big on their own terms. PS- Found this video from a couple of years ago that I thought you may enjoy.. |

I have to say, whilst BOTA didn't grab me initially, when it started taking off I really enjoyed the fact that something so different (and byb two completely unknown artists) was doing so well! So definitely deserved the top spot in the charts.
Thanks for posting this Kath, I've enjoyed following along! |

Heard this podcast at the weekend and ofc thought of you -so had to link u up.
she comes across SO well in this interview, sounding so self-assured, confident but also humble. She's in to Speed Garage, has worked with Mura Masa and a new single is coming soon. https://www.mixcloud.com/CrackMagazine/how-...ith-eliza-rose/ |

Ah, had to be the wonderful Eliza at No.1 Kath. How the hell that didn't win BJSC is beyond me, apologies for overhyping it but the UK picked up the ball some people dropped in BJSC straight after and took it to No.1 at least. And glad you finally got your long overdue win with another great entry. The whole top ten is super solid there.
