Sunday Chart Predictions
Predicting the 19/10 to 25/10 chart

No amount of sweet talking will steal Ella's glow
The last single to spend more than two weeks at #1 was back in February when Clean Bandit & Jess Glynne's 'Rather Be' spent four weeks on top. However this week is looking to see Meghan Trainor remain at number one for a third week with 'All About That Bass', meaning new single 'Steal My Girl' from One Direction is likely to become their third #2 rather than their fourth solo #1. Soundtrack to The Equalizer and lead single from his upcoming greatest hits/studio album(?) Shady XV, Eminem's 'Guts Over Fears' (featuring vocals from Sia) is set to become his 27th Top 10 single overall, whilst other new entries in the chart should include 'Bullit' by Watermät, 'Dirty Love' by Wilkinson/Talay Riley, 'Oh Cecilia' by The Vamps, 'Drunk and Incapable' by Krishane/Melissa Steal, 'Break the Rules' by Charli XCX and 'XIX' by Slipknot.

Sales in the Top 10 albums should pick up a bit after last week's number one only selling 25k, with former X Factor contestant Ella Henderson looking set to debut at number one with Chapter One. Jessie Ware and Jessie J's albums are predicted to be good sellers this week too with their new albums - titled Tough Love and Sweet Talker respectively - whilst collaborative album rose ave. from P!nk and Dallas Green and, after being sent to all iTunes members for free for a month and now being available to buy physically, Songs of Innocence by U2 should also make the Top 10. Other new entries will come from Spandau Ballet, MKTO and Jonathan Antoine, whilst Pharrell Williams' latest album should climb back up the chart following his X Factor performance.

hope Jessie Ware can at least match Devotion's peak (will sell considerably more than that did 1st week, but this'll be a pretty competitive week with Ella/Ed/George/the other Jessie all surely in the top 5)

Posted by: girl_from_oz 13th October 2014, 10:11 PM

I'm guessing Ozzy Osborne and Julian Casablancas will also chart on the album charts

Posted by: Doctor Blind 13th October 2014, 10:16 PM

I'm guessing that 1D will be inexplicably #1 in the first set of midweeks like Nicki was last week (despite having zero streams, and not getting to #1 on iTunes).

I saw copies of "God Only Knows" (CD single) for sale in Morrisons earlier, so I wonder if that might get a physical boost this week. Who am I kidding, that'll amount to about 230 copies!

Not sure if the bracketed part refers to 1D or Nicki (or both) but Steal My Girl debuted at #50 on Spotify today which is a pretty decent start and definitely not 0 streams.

Reaally hoping The Vamps can make the top 10 with Oh Cecilia sad.gif

Posted by: Doctor Blind 13th October 2014, 10:28 PM

It wasn't on Spotify earlier. Which GENIUS decided to release it the same week as the digital release? Or was it another iTunes deal (don't stream it or else we won't advertise you on our front page?)

Posted by: Dobbo 13th October 2014, 10:39 PM

Really? Slipknot to chart? I would actually love that to see how they react. I'm glad 1D won't be hitting #1. Would like to see Eminem & The Vamps both miss top ten but would very much welcome Watermat and Wilkinson.

Posted by: steve201 13th October 2014, 10:43 PM

Think 1D & The Vamps will be 1-2 in the first mids!

Posted by: { bré } 13th October 2014, 10:47 PM

Slipknot's song is an ineligible instant grat so won't be charting tongue.gif

Posted by: girl_from_oz 13th October 2014, 11:03 PM

the one direction song was showing up grey on spotify but if you clicked on the track it showed up as playable

Posted by: Dobbo 13th October 2014, 11:58 PM

Are the X-Factor tracks going to be eligible like the Voice ones were?

I don't think anyone knows for sure. We'll find out in the mids I guess.

Posted by: DonaldDuck 14th October 2014, 12:07 AM

I don't see why they wouldn't allow the x-factor songs to chart tbh, especially as The Voice songs were able to chart. I'm expecting One Direction to be #01 in the first midweeks tomorrow but I'm expecting it to be incredibly close.

It will be interesting to see if 'Shake It Off' will repeak at #03 or manage to get a new peak at #02 this week. She's 7% behind One Direction on iTunes (who are falling at a fast speed) and streaming could help her come the end of the week.

I'm not sure where The Vamps will finish come Sunday tbh. I'm expecting it to peak around #08-12 but it should be #04 in the first midweeks.

Posted by: Dobbo 14th October 2014, 12:52 AM

Well if they are then we could be looking at potentially 9 new entries on the first update!

Posted by: Jason 14th October 2014, 01:15 AM

Shame Taylor's X Factor effect hasn't been as big as I was hoping for.
Meghan will definitely hold the top spot by far.

Is Ella Henderson expected to hit #1 on the album charts?

I actually quite like the 1D song, it's a much better lead than LWWY & BSE, but I much prefer AATB and that has a sense of invincibility about it at the moment.

AATB is selling massively and there doesn't seem to be much buzz around this 1D single release. They'll be 3rd on iTunes soon behind the Queen as well wub.gif

That's a nice start for Jessie Ware, perhaps 15k or more at the end of the week? Very impressive for someone whose last album only scraped gold.

Jessie J on the other hand... on for 25k maybe? Even less than Alive, though I can see this campaign having more legs.

It's funny, both of their opening sales tallies are a bit lower than what I was expecting considering that they have both recently gained prominence with big hit singles (relative to the type of act that they are) but in saying that, it could have been much worse with both of them being obvious candidates for significant decline from their previous eras without those hit singles. So I guess it's a good result overall, particularly for superior Jessie (make of that what you will tongue.gif).

Was also expecting Ella to have sold a bit more than she has but I can see her being very consistent, particularly during Q4 with an inevitable X Factor performance and other big promotion.

I just realised regarding the X-Factor tracks, they allowed Lucy Spraggan's Last Night to chart, so why is there no consistency?

Yeah but fortunately I wouldn't think it'd last too long beyond that - 'Burnin' Up' doesn't strike me as an album seller anyway.

That was not an X Factor track in the sense that it was not released by X Factor. It was something Lucy had released prior to the show, so not strictly tied to it.

Not sure how bad the U2 thing really is. Given everyone kinda has the album for free, surely an 8k start is pretty good? It's basically a measurement of the size of their devoted fanbase.

Exactly plus as soon as it went up the chart after Lucy's performances, the album (which was released independently) was taken off and never appeared again on iTunes. Last Night after the first couple of days before it was taken off (the original Last Night) had enough sales to chart. I'm guessing as it wasn't released under Syco they had no right to ask it to be ineligible to chart.

Nice, but slightly disappointing figures for Ella. I was expecting her to do 80-100k. The album should do well in Q4 though and wouldn't be surprised if she had higher sales weeks closer to Xmas, especially as she's certain to perform on the X-factor at some stage. smile.gif

Ouch at Jessie J! I expected her to debut this week at #02, I'm guessing she will peak at #04 now.

Posted by: • Josh • 14th October 2014, 02:30 PM

Gutted for Jessie J, her album is excellent and I wish it was boosting her up back to her Who You Are but worried this is going to be a flash-in-the-pan type chart run for her.

Also, Ella H's album may well be the most boring album I've EVER listened to. So boring, don't understand success she's having with that at all!

I kinda see where you're coming from, there's a lot of tracks that are absolutely identical.

Looks like this will be the first U2 album since Achtung Baby in 1991 to not get to number 1, s'pose it serves them right for forcing their album into everyone with iCloud's library.

Well "Ghost" was a massive lead single and "Glow" has done quite well too so far. Not to mention all the promotion done thus far to the build up of the album, I was expecting higher numbers.

Posted by: { bré } 14th October 2014, 03:06 PM

U2's album is a lot higher than I expected, it's not like it was ever going to challenge for #1 what with it being given away free to... most people, so to see it within touching distance of #2 is quite a testament to their continuing fanbase. I'd bet the vast majority of the 8,200 people who bought it yesterday already own it.

Looks likely Jessie J will have to settle for a #3 album ('x' is not far behind so will probably overtake), thus continuing her legacy of being the only BRITs Critics' Choice winner to miss #1 with any studio album and doing so with all three of hers. My favourite obscure statistic.

I'm guessing The Vamps currently still only have the 'solo' version counting to their chart position, it'll be fixed by tomorrow.

Lol at 'Happy'. Slay em.

Posted by: ▬Mart!n▬ 14th October 2014, 03:16 PM

The Vamps are not the only act missing physicals, MKTO's album 8% of its sales are missing, so I expect their album will be top 40 tomorrow, once everything is factored in.

Tuesdays' update is always a little bit behind.

Maybe 1D's physicals are also missing ? 26k is very disapointing with pre-orders AND physicals =/

Posted by: { bré } 14th October 2014, 04:57 PM

It does actually look like 1D might be missing physical sales. Pretty much no chance of Taylor overtaking if that's the case then but even with missing sales added they're not going to challenge Meghan.

The Vamps' physical sales aren't missing by the way (they account for 52% of their sales, so presumably the current position is just downloads of the album version + CD sales and a little bit of streaming).

Posted by: mr_aly 14th October 2014, 05:00 PM

With no obvious big releases next week, maybe Taylor could also get a new peak then if she doesn't this week?

Issue with Nicola Sherzinger's career is that she is not sourcing good pop songs - most of her material is awful. She's got the image, can sing and the public awareness but obviously needs someone there to curate her album/material better!

They'd probably pick the one that was lower of the 2 the week before.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 15th October 2014, 04:53 PM

I preferred it when they gave the higher position to the one that had increased the most/decreased the least from the previous week. That way, a climber would be given an extra boost over a song that was fading - but if you had 2 new entries selling the same then that wouldn't work of course.

I imagine they still use the old fractional sales system on top of that anyway just to make it even more implausible for a tie to happen. They certainly still use it for albums anyway as there was a 'tie' at #6/7 a few weeks back which MW said was broken by fractional sales.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 15th October 2014, 05:39 PM

Well the "chart sales" get rounded - so ties can still happen, but yes, agreed that they are resolvable using fractional streaming "chart sales".

One stream is equivalent to 0.01 sales for chart purposes. All sales are rounded to the nearest whole number when published. The old fractional sales system is an artefact from when sales were multiplied up from a sample of a small number of shops.

I don't see why it would, not even the USA have done that. I know it is done in some countries but the OCC are clearly very cautious about changing their methodologies, I really can't see them adding streaming to the album chart any time soon.

I doubt it would have done any better at all if it had. It's not exactly been a big hit elsewhere (only charted in Belgium and, barely, the Netherlands). Realistically the number of people who have known about 'Bullit' since before it started getting airplay here is negligible.

Posted by: Kath ha Essence 16th October 2014, 07:14 PM

So the vinyl release for Cheek to Cheek hasn't helped it much then? nocheer.gif Meanwhile its US chart run is 01-04-04 which is kind

I do hope that Cheek to Cheek can move back into the top 40 next week after their Strictly performance, providing it doesn't fall too much this week. It's a lovely album; it's a shame to see it not performing that well.

Looks like by Sunday that Eminem/Sia thing will miss the top 10, and Charli will miss the top 30.

Posted by: slowdown73 17th October 2014, 10:18 AM

I'm surprised Poo Direction haven't dropped to no3 as they are currently no7 on itunes.

Posted by: Dobbo 17th October 2014, 10:21 AM

Break Free set to re-peak!

Looks like 1D will slip to 4 come Sunday, in fact every single one of the new releases is flopping in comparison to what was initially expected, except Krishane perhaps (didn't expect that to even chart).

Also lol @ Tough Love.

Posted by: April 17th October 2014, 10:35 AM

Hopefully "Break Free" can climb and bit more and Jessie J can hold onto #3 in the albums chart.

Posted by: JosephStyles 17th October 2014, 10:38 AM

The Vamps being at #6 still is very promising for them to stay top 10! They're also very stable on iTunes right now which is fantastic cheer.gif Let's hope streaming doesn't screw them over, G.R.L. style cry.gif

Terrible outcome for Charli XCX. She needs to choose more wisely with her next single otherwise Boom Clap is going to be a 1 hit wonder for her as a solo artist.

Where are Anaconda, Ugly Heart, Say You Love Me and Comeback (if, still top 40)?

I do wonder if 'Boom Clap' was just a success off the back of 'Fancy' and all the hype has evaporated now? Or maybe the record label aren't bothered about making sure this single does well if they pushed the album back and will try harder with the next single?

It's really frustrating to watch this happen to what is my favourite song of the year, but what can ya do?

For me I just think it's a much less instant song than Boom Clap. I haven't managed to get into it at all.

Pleased to see the Eminem non-song underperforming and I have no strong opinion either way on any of the week's other releases.

I think The Vamps will definitely stay top 10 now, potentially still as high as #8 (although more likely #9). Could have an even more disastrous drop than their previous singles next week though, but then this is a second post-album single for them so it's excusable.

Jessie J's album might hold onto #3 but I wouldn't be surprised if it now ends up at #5, George Ezra and Sam Smith could very easily overtake.

Posted by: Ryan. 17th October 2014, 02:44 PM

I think One Direction will just hold off Taylor, they had a 10k~ lead on Wednesday and a 6k lead now so they'll probably stay ahead by 2-3k.

Posted by: Joe. 17th October 2014, 03:03 PM

I think Taylor will nab it, she'll increase in sales with the weekend effect where 1D will only decrease

Posted by: Dobbo 17th October 2014, 03:08 PM

Same goes for Ed Sheeran, plus he has streaming on his side.

Posted by: Neil. S 17th October 2014, 03:36 PM

Surprised that Jessie Ware has slid to #7 when she's been top 5 on itunes album all week (and has climbed up to #3 from the #6 a few days back). But I guess she's not that strong of a physical seller then.

Agreed on all points!! Can't believe a third week from Meghan is holding 1D off the top spot!

I do think Bullit should have been released sooner as it had been on Beatport for at least 2 months

These sales are kinda tragic overall though. Hopefully Chapter 1 remains strong throughout the holidays. mellow.gif

Posted by: Umi 17th October 2014, 09:11 PM

I think the sales are fine for most people. Jessie J's aren't great, but X Factor will help her out and Ella's sales look underwhelming until you realise she's basically selling the album off the back of 'Ghost' (a giant hit but an old one at this stage) and being "that girl off X Factor a couple of years back".

Posted by: Neil. S 17th October 2014, 09:46 PM

I was expecting about 40k from chapter one as it had a very similar pre-order pattern to Ultraviolence

Posted by: gooddelta 17th October 2014, 09:52 PM

Pretty impressive to bag a debut #1 single and album after failing to reach the top five on the X Factor live shows. A first in fact unless I'm forgetting somebody obvious?

Posted by: andibob 18th October 2014, 08:33 AM

Considering she's like 15k ahead of her nearest rival and has the highest weekly sales since about July (don't quote me on that as I have not sat here going back through all the sales posts), I think it's a bloody good showing. Its a brilliant debut album and she's done incredibly well for herself. For me she's definitely one of the biggest successes of the year with this and Ghost under her belt. I imagine she will get an X Factor slot to keep this selling over the Christmas period and another boost with singles next year. But yes, all in all I think she's doing very well indeed and basically walking it!

Posted by: SLlewellyn 18th October 2014, 12:19 PM

Hadn't looked at the updates all week... Gutted that Watermat's now very likely to miss the T10 given that Ten Walls managed to make it. Hopeful that Eminem & Sia can hold on though, easily the best new release this week.

Okay sales for Ella Henderson, but fantastic to see her debuting at #1 - I just wish "Glow" could generate some more sales somehow, wondering if SyCo will push the third single on the live shows (or perhaps they'll have her back twice). Disappointed that Jessie J will have to settle for #3/4 though and on only 20k-ish sales, the album is a lot stronger than her last lyrically. Hopefully it's late-year release will ensure it can sell a bit over the Christmas period, "Burnin' Up" certainly isn't going to help though - it doesn't seem the type of track to do well in the charts (from Jessie anyway).

Posted by: sajjadali 18th October 2014, 04:22 PM

Ella sales should have been abit higher. But still No.1 album is definite.

It's ridiculous the Ed Shreean nonsense, he's vile IMO. Cant believe he keeps switching places on iTunes.

Solution to Ella to get her sorted.
'Empire' XF performance in a few weeks
