With some pretty low ratings for Eastenders recently and news that Corrie got under 4m last night, are really losing their consistent popularity?

We’re in the apparent golden age of TV with more and more attention being driven towards prestige TV led by A-list stars but the soaps have usually been the reliable strength in the traditional TV channel’s schedules. Yet they’re now looking to be hit. Will we ever reach a point where we see one of these soaps being AXED and will these have a domino effect for the rest of the soaps. It won’t happen in the near future with lots of money recently spent on new sets but could it happen eventually? Or is the poor ratings largely down to lack of good storylines, the warm weather and the World Cup meaning they will inprove significantly again?

I don't think that Corrie rating will ring alarm bells - the World Cup and the hot weather will have taken a huge impact on ratings. I expect it will be back to its usual highs before long.

EastEnders is more of a concern as despite a new producer and the axing of some deadwood, it's struggling hugely. I still don't think it's beyond repair, they have a very competent cast who just need more imaginative storylines.

To answer the question, I can't see any of them ending any time soon as they fill such a huge amount of scheduling time that would need to be replaced, but if EE keeps on like it is, it's putting itself in prime position to be axed in the future.

Tennis and the World Cup (every 4 years) or other sporting events usually takes centre stage, it always get the summer slump when most people tend to go away towards the end of July and August, it happens every year.

Eastenders is probably facing the axe soon, i.e next ten years. I think the other soaps will follow not long after - with, strangely, Emmerdale being the last one standing! I imagine Hollyoaks will continue and maybe Doctors however.

Not anytime I shouldn't imagine, of course ratings are going to be lower especially for EE when it's having a terrible period at the same time that the football and weather which would naturally both drive ratings down on their own, let alone with all 3 at once! It's still easy ratings for the channels that show them, they still tend to be the highest rated shows as they're so ingrained in culture etc. so I don't see why, at least for the forseeable, they would axe them.

Doctors gets more than Hollyoaks, if any I could see that being axed but even say Brookside went well below Hollyoaks ratings (and that was when ratings were generally higher) before it got axed, they went well below a million because it got moved to 4pm on a Sunday or something like that.

I don't think the soaps are in danger of going anywhere for a long time.
The ratings are affected due to the good weather, the world cup and schedule changes.
This happened for years when the world cup previously aired.
Ratings for all will rise when the world cup ends.

In Sweden, soaps are totaly dead. It died about 10 years ago, and there hasn't been a new one since the last one called "Andra Avenyn", (starring Alicia Vikander btw). I think it will come to britain aswell soon.
