She's better off building the hype again with singles before launching into an album. She's off to a good start with Never Really Over so I hope that continues.
Apparently, even though it's part of the vibe, 'Harley's in Hawaii' is not the actual title. The song is out on the 9th of August. She's rumoured to be receiving the Vanguard award at VMAs in August so I'm sure she'll perform it there.
An insider said we'll get third single in early 2020 and that will be followed with an album if there has been decent reactions. They haven't wanted to jump the gun announcing albums.
Apparently it's called Small Talk
Ooooh, how very Louise.
Being co-produced by Charlie Puth doesn't leave me with much hope...
Co-produced by Charlie Puth and Johan Carlsson, apparently out August 9th.
I love the title Small Talk!
Is this happening still?
Is Katy the guest this link is referring too?
https://capitalfm.co/31gIz29
There’s nothing on her socials atm in regards to a new single release or big promo like that.
Going by Katy in the past has she been the sort to do surprise things in the past?
I just can't see it being Rihanna or Adele's style to go on like 4 talk shows in a week for a single. They like to be more elusive than that. It sounds more like Taylor or Katy or someone else.
Here we go!
HOW do you follow up 'Never Really Over' which is literally pop perfection. I'm hyped but I'm nervous for her!!
So it's aboot a break up and the banal convos after one okay
I feel like never really over is still increasing on USA radio? It’s sad she never bothered to promote it!
I'm super excited to hear this but I am still kinda gutted that Never Really Over hasn't been the megahit that it deserves to be...
I've got really high hopes she's going to keep the quality up here.
I’m excited to hear this.
Never Really Over was a big turning point for me singles wise and a huge return to form for her imo.
Yeah. Love that cover too!
Groovy, baby.
Invented the Sixties!
This should have been the style and sound of the last era!!
EXCITING, cover feels upbeat and summery.
I love that artwork
Might be my favourite ever single cover she’s done tbh!!
Those images are the first times I’ve really like appreciated the blonde hair on her.
Oh Damn, I thought today was Friday and only just realised it's not.
Presumably the pre-chorus?
She is unbeatable in the lyric videos department
Sounds like it's gonna be a pretty generic drop in the chorus... gahhhh. I hope I'm wrong though!
I was excited until the very last second with that deep voice, we all know what's coming If this is the big single she's planning to promote, it should've went on NRO. I will never stop being bitter about the way she totally neglected her best song ever
I'm happy with the direction she's going, very 1989y, but just... cut the drops!
I don't know about a generic drop! For some reason, it reminded me of the "HUH" before No Excuses by Meghan Trainor. Not saying I want it to sound like that flop (though it is severely underrated) but... also leads me to believe Katy isn't gonna throw some weak ass drop our way.
People said the same about the Never Really Over pre-chorus.
I’ll have to judge when I hear the whole song.
The clip sounded a bit like a 6/10 maybes? idk maybe it’s one of those songs what has strong verses but a weaker chorus like Arianas problem (it sort of reminded me of that the way the chorus was male spoken).
Okay, now I'm worried if this is the chorus...
It's cute! Not as instant as NRO, but I'm sure I'll grow to enjoy it
^my exact first thoughts as well!
A lot worse than the snippets would suggest... oh Katy
#1 on TTH? This is so ridiculous, if NRO had that kinda promo...
meh a bit of a mis-step
There’s no way this can be a hit if NRO never properly took off. Such a step down and a huge disappointment
It's totally forgettable, I've listened like 10 times and can't remember anything about it! Nothing like NRO I don't know what she was thinking, lightning definitely doesn't strike twice. NRO was THE hit that got away
I like it

Small Talk is very cute! I'm happy with it, I'll certainly be using it and bopping away for the rest of the summer
Never Really Over was a triumph of a song, but I wasn't really after part 2 - I'm happy with a different vibe this time. This is "lighter" sounding (even though the subject matter is actually quite sad).
My favourite part of the song is:
"I just can't believe
We went from strangers to lovers to strangers in a lifetime
Now just memories"
Not quite sure about the "blah blah blah" section, but it is very Katy and to be fair it does fit the mood of feeling like there's nothing of substance left to say with an ex.
Really liking this!
Definitely doesn’t sound as big as NRO but she’s in a much better position now than she was when that was released. Completely agree with Jay, the pre-chorus is gorgeous.
And another song without an unnecessary drop 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Eh. Nothing else to say.
It's a brilliant song! I can understand disappointment following the soaring pop anthem that is Never Really Over, but this is a great follow-up. Melodically strong, distinctive enough to stand out and still very Katy. I think this could appeal more to the GP than NRO!
It just sounds very forgettable tbh
I like this a lot, it's no NRO, but it's going on my playlist!
The queen of inconsistency strikes again. Underwhelming after NRO which showed her back on form.
It's cute
This is so...mediocre. Forgot the melody already
It's alright and all, it's nowhere near her best but definitely a whole lot better than her worst moments.
Bon Appetit was a much better and a much more interesting bop second single
#hottake
#boneappleteababy
I really like this
It’s a hit for sure not in a big euphoric way NRO was it’s more subtle than that.
I do like this though it’s catchy enough the verses are strong as is the chorus and it’s pretty relatable too.
As for as her second singles go I like it more than Unconditionally and Bon Appetit.
This is quite cute, it feels more Spotify than NRO so I think this may actually do better whereas NRO was more "perfect for the gays"
I can see this growing too, I found myself warming to it a little more as the first listen went on!
My first listen wasn't immediately blown away but I think following Never Really Over was near on impossible because it's SO euphoric that anything tamer feels like a bit of a comedown. But, this isn't Never Really Over and there's so much good about this.
The bridge is fantastic, very classic Katy and if it was paired with a different chorus, it'd be as much of a moment as "two years and just like that...". It's strange to have a Katy song feel like a grower because she's usually so instant with her melodies and in your face choruses because it does feel very typical of her still, especially the way it all comes together for the final chorus. A lovely earworm. One of her best and up there with Never Really Over? No. But, that's fine, I'll still be hammering it.
My biggest gripe is the middle 8 though, she's capable of so much better than "blah blah blah".
Track #34 (if you include those video things) on HHUK isn't a bad start, certainly in the first half!
I LOVE THIS.
The final chorus is absolutely sensational.
I felt like I spent the whole song waiting for something to happen and it just... didn't.
The final chorus comes together SO strongly for me, seems strange to say nothing happens. There's a feel of Selena Gomez x Julia Michaels of it, like a 'Hands To Myself' or 'Bad Liar' but like... if it was done by Katy, aka properly sung and given her production and lyrical nuances that make everything feel so typically HER.
Yeah, there's some really strong flourishes on this. That ending really explodes.
It's a solid 7/10 to NRO's 11/10 for me right now.
I'd agree with that! Never Really Over, which I'm still not remotely tired, is making its way up to being one of my favourites of all time from her.
I mean it's not one of her worst but it's super underwhelming It just doesn't go anywhere
Only listened once but I like it. The production during the last chorus really reminds me of another song though. Need to relisten later and think what it is aha.
'I've had every inch of your skin, there's nowhere your hands haven't been' - is pure filth.
I'm not a huge fan of NRO but it did sound like a big pop moment.
She should unrelease this.
The production flourish during the last chorus actually reminds me of Shout Out To My Ex.
I love this. Hope its another hit for her
This is actually growing on me quite a bit. It was a weak new music week for me, so maybe that's why.
It's cool being at a place where Capital is spamming the hell out of two Katy singles at once. Something we didn't experience during Witness.
Small talk is quite an average track. It won’t perform as well as never really over and she will need a stronger third single to help boost pre-interest in any future album from this campaign. I think she will struggle to come back!
Love this!
Only just listened to it this morning, but I like it as much as I like NRO, and I'm loving the lyric video
lol a bridge is not the pre-chorus oh my
I'm a fan! It's another single that will keep the public and radio on board which is all we can ask for! Not as big a moment as NRO but I think this will go top 20 and have a decent chart run. Strangerstoloverstostrangers is a really nice part of the song which is memorable enough even if the chorus isn't as big as I'd like it. However this does sound more 4th/5th single territory rather than 2nd.
Only thing I'm not a fan of is that Katy says 'SMALL TUK' instead of talk
For me it's up there with Never Really Over. It's perhaps even better, dare I say. *.*
My only gripe with the song is that it's too short.
Opening Spotify numbers sadly similar to 365's the charts haven't updated yet but this was 365's:
Global: #39
Uk: #57
US: #57
Let's listen to Timbaland teach us about song structure:
#12 on the US iTunes, down to #16 in the UK
NRO is proof she can still get a decent hit with the right song at least... hopefully this will be a lesson to her!
Not surprised. 1 listen was enough for me. I could tell it was gonna be shet from the clips
It's actually not as bad as I thought, but I feel like it's missing just a little more punch.
This is her Delicate, or so she/her label hopes, I reckon.
Spotify
Global: #27
UK: #41
US: #19
Amazing!
Those are much better than expected - big shame it missed out on the top 50 effect today though.
This is such an ear worm. It's slowly creeping into my affections and after each listen, I think more and more of it.... Such a good song.
It's more mid table Katy for me, which isn't a bad thing because her singles are so strong, it feels like a comedown after NRO though. The final 40 seconds are amazing.
Omg it's basically on Bon Appetit levels!
Think it might miss the Top 20 this week.
Oh I was quite enjoying this until the "blah blah blah" bit... what a momentum killer just like how the quickfire bit ruined 'Never Really Over' for me. I know the latter is a much more unpopular opinion but I'm not feeling these random quirks at all. Otherwise I do appreciate more of a sophisticated style sonically this era.
I think she should have stayed on NRO and heavily promoted it all summer.
I actually love the "blah blah blah blah" bit! It's bonkers but so very Katy, and it fits the song's playful tone very much. It's especially great after the final chorus!!
The 'Blah Blah' took me by surprise the first time I heard it, but it works with what the song is about.
We've survived 'hey kids; spelling is fun!!!!' this year so this is inoffensive in comparison.
The blah blah blah part totally works for me too.
It’s like she’s struggling to think of what to say / what conversation to have type thing it definitely works.
Had it come in Never Really Over I’d have thought wtf this is bad but in this particular song it works well.
She’s done far far worse than this
It's already behind NRO on US iTunes and will be soon in the UK... welp. Single #3 please!
I think this song is just meant to be a grower? I keep finding myself getting random parts of the song stuck in my head.
It's a good song, but in comparison to Never Really Over its just not in the same league. Still hope she gets at least top 30 from it
I think it'll be her first single to not debut top 40 this week. I bet if she'd had top 50 exposure on Spotify on Saturday it would have managed.
#33 in the midweeks - could be worse but it is kind of disappointing after how big Never Really Over's debut was 🙁
I do really like this and it is still growing on me but I would change the deep voice that says "small talk" and the "blah blah blah" middle 8, they're holding it back from being an 8/9 whereas NRO was an immediate 10 for me
It's a terrible song! I think this is just a placeholder between NRO and the Taylor duet.
This really isn't good at all for me on first listen so forgettable, so bland and faceless and frankly.. annoying?
Most of us would probably skip this as an album track by her but I suppose it being a single means we give it more time. But nah, I can't see myself returning to it often out of choice.
This is such an earworm. So infectious!
C list on R1 for Friday.
Vertical video is up on TTH. She is dressed like boo boo the clown.
Debuts at #43 this week.
Remember guys, it's never really over.
Except when it is. Except when it's this.
I'm really loving this, the way it builds up into the final chorus is so good. Of course it's flopping though, why wouldn't it be?
Set to debut below #100 in the US! Eek.
That’s awful considering she was #1 on TTH with the cover!
Is that worse than Nelly Furtado?!
No new album then
This might be the last we hear of her in a while I think
It might even be the end.
I imagine they'll try with Harley's In Hawaii considering that's got a video apparently.
Then she may try and release a collab with Taylor potentially as one last try to get another hit?
They moved on from never really over too fast tbh, if she promoted in US, this would have been a top 5 hit in the US
Harley's is out in Oct x
Yeah I deleted this off my playlist l
It's hard to see where she'll go after this, although didn't I read someone say they're not really recording for an album and testing the waters with singles?
Yeah it really was a bit of an odd choice of single after gaining back so much momentum with NRO, like, did they really think this could be as big if not better than NRO?
Oops at this floppage I really like it, but it's not one of those songs I want to go back to loads like I did with NRO, that was undeniably huge and this just isn't right to follow that as a single it seems, whether you like it or not that's clear.
She is just testing the waters but it's still quite concerning if she's going to flop this badly with a song!
Will she become "the new Selena Gomez" who just releases 3 singles and disappears for a year to come back with a lackluster feature?
Also, I think it's stupidity for her team not to release her music videos straight away. Never Really Over's video views massively helped it debut top 20 (Not to mention it helps sales and streams a bit too) and video views were the reason 365 managed to debut higher than this.
Oh it actually ended up debuting higher than 365 on Billboard(81), without the official video streams that had, or the radio adds. Smash!
Down to #82 on the UK iTunes and down to #88 on Spotify. I know it's early days but yeah, this isn't gonna do anything is it
It’s still a bit soon to fully write it off.
I think it could perform similarly to some of Ellie’s last few singles what went top 40 after a few weeks.
We haven’t had an official video for it yet or any promo.
Maybe this could be her American Oxygen like single though?
The songs not that bad. She’s released much worse. If Swish Swish, Bon Appetit and This Is How We Do can go top 40 this should be able to manage it.
SS and BA were great tho
(And also released somewhat in her prime when she still had a lot of hype)
Yeah I was about to say the same thing ^
It's an uphill battle for Katy now, she needs A+ material otherwise she'll continue to slide. Small Talk I'm sure would have been a cute hit for her 6 years ago when she was in her prime, but it's not good enough at this stage.
What exactly is a cute hit :S
So it'd be like Swish Swish and Bon Appetit?
I'm baffled by this song's promotion. They gave it number one on TTH, and just released the vertical video a few days ago and have only just serviced it to mainstream radio? And the music video doesn't even have a release date yet? If they really wanted this to be a hit, they should lifted an embargo on release day and gone all out by releasing the video, vertical video, and having it impacted pop radio immediately. It really feels like Capitol wasn't ready for this song's release AT ALL. They should hide this away in a closet and never speak of it again. Or just say it's a buzz single/promotional single. Just... yikes.
It's hard work being a Katy stan these days.
And Gaga fans after the GLORIOUS G.U.Y flopped on charts.
Debuts at #81 on Hot 100 i-
I had to suffer the tanking of the Witness era TOO, this isn’t a fresh feeling! It seems to have been a constant battle for the past 3 years
For someone whose management seemingly couldn’t get it wrong when it came to singles and promotion for a good 3 eras, they’ve really dropped the ball of recent. Granted, I love Bon Appetit more than anything of the last era so it’s hard to be impartial and see why that did so bad but... this is already not standing the test of time, 2 weeks on after they’d done so well building up good will towards her with Never Really Over and returns to her big chorus moments. FRUSTRATING.
Not doing any promo for NRO or even doing the smallest things like discounting the song in the UK were big mistakes too, I think. The song was holding up so so well and they kinda ignored it.
This was such a poor song to release. I've been a Katy stan since her first release and this really is a week single. The low chart positions are completely deserved. Let's hope her next release is a big improvement on Small Talk.
I am still loving this.
Hurry with the video pleeeease!
I mean, at least they got a solid era out of it! If a 4th single, well after the album comes out, doesn't smash, it's not the end of the world. This is a pre-album release that's tanking, completely different.
It’s climbed a bit today, any reason why?
Is Potty Jam her only promo these days?
What’s Potty Jam?
Potty Jam sounds like a childrens show
I think Witness era pretty much killed her career and it will be tough to recover from that without a few strong singles. Small talk isn’t a great track. It’s fairly forgettable. Most successful artists have 2-3 big albums and then their career fades so Katy has done well to keep in the spot light.
^ I disagree. Small Talk is FANTASTIC!
Don't be too quick to write her off just yet. She needs to reinvent herself, in the same way GaGa has done since ArtFlop crashed & burned.
For starters, I think she should try her hand at acting.
Despite the floppage I'm really liking Small Talk still. It's full of hooks, well-produced and builds towards the final chorus. I think the bathroom video really showed off the strength of the song when it was stripped down. Only thing is that it's not second single material and it needed to stand out more compared to the rest of the charts.
Putting so much effort on making Small Talk a hit while NRO was still doing very well, played on radio and streamed in good amounts is one of the most bizarre management choices I've seen recently.
She's not huge enough pop star to carry several hits at the same time.
What effort has she put into Small Talk? Maybe I missed it? 👀
She has posted about it several times on social media
There was a sponsored post on Instagram
It was added on all major playlists on Spotify (most likely Apple Music too)
She played the song live on IGTV just yesterday
The song was sent to radio adds
All it has NOT had so far is promo appearances and music video.
and let's not forget the biggest promo it got - being #1 on the biggest Spotify and AM playlists.
UK
iTunes: #116
Spotify: #154
US
iTunes: #227
Spotify: #167
Christ.
I remember thinking back at the beginning of the summer after I'd first heard NRO that she was properly back and she was gonna have a really successful summer. I feel bad for her.
The small talk video looks like it could be a Birthday type mess
The 'Birthday' video is a mess but it's a very enjoyable one. Not something you could say about the likes of 'Swish Swish'.
I'm surprised they're even still trying! As much as I like the song, just bury it under the carpet and try again!
Their problem with this was that they released it too soon I reckon. NRO was just beginning to peak everywhere and they didn't really give that chance to simmer down before pushing this, so I think it's gone under the radar a bit. I reckon if you were to ask people if they'd heard Katy Perry's new one they'd assume you meant NRO.
I think more than anything it's obvious this was never destined to catch on regardless.
Premieres at 5pm today.
Ready for the mess
I hope with a video and a Radio 1 B-listing that it can push for top 40, although at this stage I am quite doubtful.
Imagine not even discounting it when half the songs on iTunes are discounted lol
I actually really like the video! Nice twist of the lyrics by seeing them from the dog's perspective. It certainly gives a bit more life to the song.
I don't know why I was expecting such a car crash, it's actually quite cute and well made. And tongue in cheek without being too stupid.
It's better than the song oop!
OMG.
That is the most adorable and heartwarming video ever 😭😭❤❤
DOGS ❤❤ 🐶🐶
What an adorable video! So so so cute and not the cringe we could've got from her.
I find this song to be a total non-event and a huge disappointment after NRO. A better timed release and more promo wasn't going to save this. On to the next one please.
The video is so cute!
The song's still not cutting the mustard for me though.
Also, who releases videos on Friday nights lol? What a silly time.
Just removed this from my Spotify playlist. Every time it comes on I just skip it tbh so it's now gone
Welp, this is growing on me.
I thought this was a promo single
Maybe it was "a buzz single"?
I think it was just a flop girls.
Onto Harleys (which apparently has Katy's most expensive video ever)
Shame she killed the momentum that she had build up with NRO.
NRO was completely wrong choice, that's were she killed her momentum. Not with Small Talk.
The (much) bigger hit was the problem?? Oh Nick!
I'm confused.
NRO did amazing job to lift her UP from whatever mess 365 caused.
She's performing this on Ellen next week. Lol
NRO got 0 TV Performances
Can't she just pretend like this didn't happen and move onto Harleys?
But NRO never had a moment. Not even close how she used to have it with previous singles.
All her lead single had way bigger moment, and were smash hits.
That's why I said that she didn't ruined it with ST, when NRO failed first.
It has missed top 10 in like all charts (aside Australia and Canada)
You can't compare A female who is 34 now to 10 years ago in their prime imperial phase. NRO did fantastically for this point in her career.
NRO did fine. It didnt really have a buzz about it but still a top 20 single
But I also agree that NRO wasn't massive and was just okay. It still gave her SOME momentum to BUILD ON, but that was it. Snail Talk took it all away.
Well shes performing ST on Ellen next week
Everyone can pretend that NRO wouldn't have absolutely smashed had it followed Prism. It's huge, anthemic, and everything a Katy Perry lead single should be.
She was following the flop of 365, the underperformance of Witness, the entire Katy Perry is over narrative, her age — and yet it managed to do pretty decently with very little promotion outside of the release date.
Small Talk has killed that momentum — a terrible choice — and it feels like she's back to square one.
She is back to square one ... unless people completely bypassed ST and forgot that it existed...
This is why sometimes it'a good when an atrocious album flops, as people forget about it and remember the last good one. Artpop and Joannr are TEEERRRRIBLE, but no one bought them. Now people just remember Shallow Album and it puts GaGa in a great position. If people just remembrr NRO, she still has some momentum. If they remember ST, she doesn't have any. Radio might even have forgotten sT tbh as it still plays NRO too.
Heart is spamming NRO, and keeping it top 60 on iTunes all this time later. They don't know about Small Talk.
What is this shit about her age though? Pink is 40 and still getting hits and #1 albums. Beyonce is a huge icon at the age of 38. Gaga is just year younger and had a #1 hit both sides of the Atlantic with Shallow. Sia's hits are among the most streamed of all time and she's 43.
It's not about her AGE, it's about her career has developed on recent years.
It's how it started to develop with Prism.
THEY HAD WALKING ON AIR AND LEGENDARY LOVERS!!
They then thought Witness and Rise would be moments!!
Yes but anyone with a decade in the biz has to face ups and downs at some point. No one is immune to that. Even Drake has had singles that has underperformed but he has bounced back. It's about reinvention and quality. Katy reached #1 just two years ago with Feels, she just needs to find a new path, these mediocre pop hits are not it. If you look at streaming charts, literally NO ONE would be successful with a song like Small Talk.
I'm not a huge NRO fan but it did as well as a Katy single could do coming off the back of a really poor era. She was never going to smash out the gate or even close.
This was dead on arrival because it's rubbish that's all there is to it, no one could make this a hit.
And if they chose this over Harleys in Hawaii, which already has a teeerrible titls, imagine how bad that must be :/
I often wonder how well NRO would have done with a good amount of promo. Such a missed opportunity because it should have been a mega hit for her
OMG that performance
She must look at this song and outfit and everything in five years time and say "yeah..."
But every one of us has ups and downs so keep going Katy!
I find it really hard to see her recovering from this.
Good performance but the song is dead
US: Not top 100 on iTunes, not top 200 on Spotify
UK: Not top 100 on iTunes, not top 200 on Spotify
Disaster doesn't even begin to cover this
edit - maybe not!
Omg all this effort
A double-single release on vinyl of this alongside "Never Really Over" will be out on November 29.
