Has anyone seen this yet? Absolutely awful (sorry if this is in the wrong spot!)
A Singapore container ship lost control/power and sailed into a support for the bridge, effectively bringing almost the entire bridge down. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna145047 QUOTE A major bridge collapsed in Baltimore on Tuesday morning after it was hit by a container ship, sending several vehicles plunging into the water below.
Emergency responders were searching for at least seven people who were missing, and two were rescued from the water after the ship collided with a pillar supporting part of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which carries the Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of the Baltimore metropolitan area. The incident was captured in dramatic video, which showed smoke billowing from the boat, as the bridge and road it held tumbled into the river. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the collision. The boat did not sink and its lights remained on. Follow live updates here One person rescued from the water was in good condition and refused treatment, but the other was very seriously injured and was being treated in a local trauma center, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said in a news conference at the scene. Wallace said that underwater drones as well as sonar and infrared surveillance tools had confirmed there were several cars in the river. He added that it was not known how many people may be missing nor how many vehicles were on the bridge. Helicopters will survey the scene from the air as the sun comes up, he said. "We are still very much in an active search and rescue posture at this point," Wallace said. Rescuers would search the surface of the water, in the river and on the deck of the ship, he said. A horrendous incident indeed, the sheer speed of the bridge's collapse was very shocking to watch. Praying for the missing individuals and their families

This is horrific. I feel for all impacted by it, especially the families of those still missing. The lack of knowing for certain is terrible and they deserve to be at peace.
The support pillar construction on this bridge is super interesting, it is triangular in shape from the side, which is the strongest shape, but the bridge is basically balanced on top of quite a thin support structure and there appears from the images available to be very little in the ways of protective structures in the waterway itself. I think that the eventual accident report is going to make for very fascinating reading on if any aspects of the bridge design contributed to the severity of this. I somehow hadn't heard about this but yeah what awful news. Must have been absolutely terrifying for the people in the cars These stories move fast but what i read earlier was that the ship gave enough warning that something was up that the authorities stopped traffic over the bridge and so there was no traffic on the bridge at the time, just a road repair crew. Absolutely awful for their families (last i saw 2 survived, one badly hurt, but 6 still missing) but this could have been a lot worse if the ship hadn't been able to put a mayday out and if the authorities hadn't responded so quickly to it in such a risk-adverse manner |

Could they not get the road workers off in time?
