The sales figures in these lists are those full sales i.e. there complete chart runs. They are labelled from the year of release i.e. they are NOT year end charts. Although 1989 is the same as the year end chart of 89, as I broke off at the end of 1989, as I didn't include 1990s sales.

I've no idea where you got these lists from, but I question your source.
For example in the official year end chart for 1988 compiled by Gallup, Belinda Carlisle was at number 17 and Erasure at 24. There is no way the latter could have been no 9 for the year, with Crackers International having only been on sale for the last month of the year. Similarly, Krush were officially only 36 for the year (to suggest they were one of the top 20 sellers is laughable) Similarly in 1986, Reet Petite was 17 according to Gallup which is certainly a more believable position than no 4 having only been released in December, and the Housemartins were 2 places lower. As for Madonna's Borderline, it certainly would have sold in 1984 having reached no 56 on original release. Richard |

Unfortunately people will look at these lists as assume say, that Human League had the year's best selling single for 1981 when Soft Cell did. You know that and I know that, but there's a lot people out there will take this info at face value & assume it to be correct!
It might have been better just do a list of the best sellers of each decade rather than confusing some people....... This post has been edited by TOP40: 20th July 2014, 11:36 AM |

It might have been better just do a list of the best sellers of each decade rather than confusing some people....... Some people would of stopped & thought & then asked, instead of jumping in feet first. It's quite obvious they aren't year end charts, as explained. People are more interested in complete figures. Not just year end figures, where many singles crossed over into 2 years aka "Don't You Want Me". Which is actually called 1981's biggest shipment i.e. it shipped a million by the end of December. You sound a bit petty to me. |

For the 70s, I've noted the sales in the year end published charts ie in this case "8th" is the cut off w/k ending date, that was used in the published year end chart.
1979 (BMRB x20) 01 Art Garfunkel - Bright Eyes 1.049400 02 Blondie - Heart Of Glass 867,000, 896,000 by 1987 (Record Business give it 1.080000 & award it best selling single of 1979, in contrast BPI give it a platinum disc, whether or not it sold a million in 1979, is still open to question & depends on the equation of who polled what shop, but then Record Business always favoured Blondie more in the Independant sector) 9000 in 1980, re-issued in 1987, with 20,000, 35,000 in 1991, 932,000 in a BMRB/Gallup figuring 03 Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (799,000 in 1979) 967,000 in 1979/80. 808 without the missed week 04 Cliff Richard - We Don't Talk Anymore 850,000 in 1979, 880,000 including a 1982 re-release 05 Ian Dury & The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick 821,000 1978/79 9,000 in 1980 making it 830,000 (855 with the 1985 & 1991 versions) Record Business give it 928,000. It obviously sold better in the Independant shops. 06 Dr Hook - When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman 832 (842 with the 1992 re-issue) dr hook 807 5th Jan (822 with the missed week) ian dury 787 without the missed week 07 Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays 775,000 (Record Business put it above Cliff Richard in their 1979 chart. Again, the Independant shops preferred Bob Geldof to Cliff) (855,000 shipped) 785,000 with a 1988 re-issue & 795,000 with a 1994 re-issue dr hook 8th 737 08 Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive 736,000, 766,000 by 1984 930,000 with the 1993 re-mix 09 Tubeway Army - Are 'Friends' Electric 735,000 (766,000 with the 1985 Live version, 772,000 with a 1990 re-issue (792,000 with a 2008 Picture disc) 10 Lena Martell - One Day At A Time 725,000 with the 1980 sales (705,000 in 1979) a 1983 re-issue gives it a total of 735,000, but it was originally released in October 1977 clocking up nearly 6 months in the top 200, without making the top 75. So, infact 750,000 sales 11 Roxy Music - Dance Away 713,000 (shipped 750,000) ian dury 1979 702 lena 5th Jan 696 12 Blondie - Sunday Girl 675,000 (shipped 750,000) lena 8th 672 pink Floyd 5th Jan 640 13 The Police - Message In A Bottle 616,280 617 14 M - Pop Muzik 611,000 Ian Dury was here in the BMRB list for 1979. It was an error 15 Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Oliver's Army 590,000 16 The Bee Gees - Tragedy 587,000 17 Abba - I Have A Dream 5th Jan 280 400,000 in 1979 535,000 in the 79/80 run (547,000 by 1989) 18 Abba - Chiquitita 534,620 (548,000 by 1989) 19 The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star 532,000 20 Gary Numan - Cars 531,000 (590,000 with the 1987 version & 635,000 with 1990s re-mixes) Sad Cafe - Every Day Hurts (a mistake by BMRB, where they have 25055, but it is actually 20555. So, they've givenit 90,000 extra sales, which it never really had) 27 The Police - Walking On The Moon 5th Jan 440 470,000 in 1979 (520,000 with 1980 & awarded a gold disc) 21 Pretenders - Brass In Pocket 135,000 in 1979 (500,000 in the 79/80 run) 22 Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love 5th Jan 458,000 468,000 in 1979 (483,000 across 79/80) 29 The Tourists - I Only Want To Be With You 5th Jan 301 (371,000 in 1979 (466,000 in total, though awarded a gold disc) 23 Anita Ward - Ring My Bell 465,000 (though 500,000 shipped) 475,000 with the 1990s re-issues 24 Racey - Some Girls (awarded a gold disc) 450 25 Earth Wind & Fire With The Emotions - Boogie Wonderland 445,000 (awarded a gold disc) 26 Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til' You Get Enough (Did not get a gold disc) 432,000 28 Abba - Gimme Gimme Gimme 5th 413,000 416,000 in 1979 (420,000 in the 79/80 run, 446,000 by 1982) 30 Sad Cafe - Every Day Hurts 411 31 The Three Degrees - Woman In Love 410,000 36 Donna Summer & Barbra Streisand - No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) 5th Jan 363,000 383,000 in 1979 (410,000 in the 79/80 run) queen 408 8th Dec ymca 405 in 1979 33 Peaches & Herb - Reunited 401 boogie wonderland 7th July 400 gimme gimme gimme 8th 399 45 Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin 163,000 in 1979 (218,400 in the 79/80 run, 353,000 in the 1970s, 368,000 between 72 & 80, 447,000 between 67 & 80) 34 Lene Lovich - Lucky Number 398 35 The Bellamy Brothers - If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body 397 37 Squeeze - Cool For Cats 396 ring my bell 7th July 395 43 Earth Wind & Fire - September 369 (395,000 with the 1989 re-mix) 38 The Sex Pistols - Something Else 365 are friends electric 7th July 363 39 Janet Kay - Silly Games 360 40 B.A. Robertson - Bang Bang 359 41 Blondie - Dreaming 358 32 Fiddler's Dram - Daytrip To Bangor 5th Jan 175 (255,000 in 1979) (355,000 in total) 49 The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight 5th Jan 223 (263 in 1979) (353.000 in total) & 360,000 with the 1989 re-mix! 1978 (BMRB x20) By the way the Radio One chart of the year in 1978, covered the w/k ending dates 14th Jan - 16th Dec 1978. Strangely & unusual the other chart of the year that appeared covered 14th Jan 78 to 6th Jan 79 (but of course didn't include the missed 30th Dec 78 week). This seems to be the only occasion when BMRB covered, a near full year i.e. 51 weeks.

1976 (BMRB x17) Of course based on Panel sales, but just look at the difference compared to the shipments. Which really says the x17 that BMRB used was a fraction too high at times.
1 Under The Moon Of Love Showaddywaddy 1,051(150,000 in the missed week, 901,000 without it) 1.015 2 Sailing Rod Stewart 1.003 988,000 (1.005,000 with the 1987 re-issue) 3 Save Your Kisses For Me Brotherhood of Man 1,002,711 983 (the confusion bit. Showaddywady & Rod Stewart finish above it. BMRB confirm it, so how do shipments put it ahead of both?!) 4 Mississippi Pussycat 910,000 (950,000 shipment figures) 900 Pussycat 8th Jan 891 873 5 Don't Go Breaking My Heart Elton John & Kiki Dee 890,000 (845,000 shipment figures) 872,700 Mississippi Pussycat w/k ending 18th Dec 870 853 6 When a Child is Born Johnny Mathis 845,000 817 (647,000 without the missed week) 15,000 in 1981 in a duet with Gladys Knight & 10,000 in a 1989 re-issue, 870 by 1990 842 7 If You Leave Me Now Chicago 800,000 784 (755,000 shipment figures) 784,000 without the missed week Chicago 8th Jan 772 8 Dancing Queen Abba 771,000 756 (790,000 by 1979, 900,000 by 1995) 9 A Little Bit More Dr. Hook 750,000 735 (695,000 shipment figures) Under The Moon Of Love Showaddywaddy 8th Jan 749 If You Leave Me Now Chicago w/k ending 18th Dec 742 10 Fernando Abba 668,000 656 (695,000 by 1979, 748,000 in shipments) 11 I Love To Love Tina Charles 548,000 5378 When a Child is Born Johnny Mathis 8th Jan 521 510 12 The Roussos Phenonemon (EP) Demis Roussos 520,000 5099 13 December '63 Four Seasons 500,000 4902 (516,000 with the 1988 re-mix) 14 Leader of the Pack Shangri La’s 194,000 in 1976 (282,000 in 1972) 476,000 with the 1972 re-issue, 575,000 with the 1965 release) 15 Money Money Money Abba 445,000 Under The Moon Of Love Showaddywaddy w/k ending 18th Dec 430 16 You To Me Are Everything Real Thing 430,000 4216 (692,500 with the 1986 re-mix) 17 You Make Me Feel Like Dancing Leo Sayer 405,000 18 Mamma Mia Abba 413,000 19 Forever And Ever Slik 410,000 402 (awarded a gold disc in 1978) Sailing Rod Stewart 18th Dec 400 392 998,000 20 Young Hearts Run Free Candi Staton 395,000 3873 21 Somebody To Love Queen 387,000 22 Combine Harvester Wurzels 380,000 3726 23 When Forever Has Gone Demis Roussos 375,000 3677 24 Jungle Rock Hank Mizell 370,000 3628 25 Can't Get By Without You Real Thing 360,000 (541,300 with the 1986 re-mix) You Make Me Feel Like Dancing Leo Sayer 18th Dec 355 3481 Mamma Mia Abba 350,000 (without the 1975 sales) 26 Hurt Manhattans 340,000 3334 27 Silly Love Songs Wings 335,000 3284 28 Convoy C W McCall 330,000 38 Portsmouth -
