Put a piano in front of Charlie Puth and the soul-pop crooner will come up with a hitmaking hook in a heartbeat. Born in 1991, the New Jersey-raised talent took to the keys early, thanks to his mother, who began teaching him piano at age four. In an interview with Apple Music about her 2018 debut Camila, Camila Cabello told a story about a conversation she had at a Grammy party. It was a guy—a famous guy, a celebrity. “A flirtationship,” she called it. I completely forgot about the Sway song ‘Level Up’. And I remember hearing Texas’ ‘Halo’ all over the radio in 97. I have to say I prefer ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ but ‘Glamorous’ is a big fave of mine.

At the height of the fever dream that was Elton John’s life in the ’70s, the singer-songwriter had the optician Dennis Roberts design a pair of giant, sculptural glasses studded with 57 battery-powered lights in the shape of the name Elton—to the tune of about $5,000. Adjusted for inflation, you’re talking about something more like $25,000. But John had a show to put on, and wouldn’t that be something to talk about?
The excess was always apparent: the rhinestones, the costumery, the old Hollywood glamour retrofitted for a new, gender-bending world. But beneath the feathers, John’s music—written with the lyricist Bernie Taupin—was direct and unpretentious, the kind of rock ’n’ roll storytelling that met you where you were. Even if you didn’t know exactly what it meant—who is the dancer, and why are they so tiny?—the feeling was immediate, universal. By 1973’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John said they were writing a couple of songs at breakfast and recording them before lunch. This was pop music, John argued: You weren’t supposed to think about it too much, and god help you if you did. And yet here we are, singing the songs five decades later.
Born Reginald Dwight in Pinner, England, in 1947, John took to the piano young, studying on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music while obsessively listening to Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. They were so physical, John marvelled—they didn’t just play the piano, they beat it. He started playing in pubs at 15 and, around 20, met Taupin through a want ad in a music magazine.
There were good years and bad ones, highs and lows—that handful of Valium before jumping into the swimming pool in 1975, for example, or the disco album, which John himself described as jumping on a dying bandwagon—but he has always endured, emerging from the debauchery of the ’70s and redefinitions of the ’80s bruised but never beaten, a gay icon, AIDS activist, philanthropist, Knight Bachelor, and father of two. In 2018, nearly 50 years after his debut album, he embarked on a three-year farewell tour, and published his first autobiography, Me, in 2019. The host of Apple Music 1’s Rocket Hour, Elton has been the recipient of countless awards (Grammys, Oscars, BRITs, Tonys, Ivors), has been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and, in 2020, was awarded the Companion of Honour. - Apple Music
Dua Lipa
There’s purpose in Dua Lipa’s euphoric pop. “For me, it’s about championing women and putting ourselves in the position of power,” the singer told Apple Music in 2020, ahead of the release of her second album, Future Nostalgia. “I have been inspired by the female alphas that have shown me that we can do it. And that we can wear the pants, you know? We need more of that in music.” Forcing the world to get a little more comfortable with female alphas has been a mission statement for Lipa (born in London to Kosovar Albanian parents in 1995) since her 2017 self-titled debut. It housed the triumphant breakup smash “New Rules”, the self-love anthem “IDGAF” and the assured “Hotter Than Hell”—songs which made it clear that this was no ingénue, but rather an outspoken, effortlessly cool face of pop’s future. Indeed, that status was cemented a year later when Lipa made history as the first female solo artist to receive five BRIT Award nominations. She won two and, in 2019, added two Grammys to her mantelpiece.
Despite the success of her debut, Lipa wasn’t interested in recreating its hits. “People always say, ‘The second album is really scary,’ but for me, it’s more scary to go back into the studio and try to create something like ‘New Rules’ or ‘IDGAF’ over and over again,” she said. “I feel like I’d end up in a vicious cycle of trying to get somewhere but never being able to mature as an artist.” And so, to move forward, she pivoted to the past, drawing on disco and funk—and filtering it through her ahead-of-its-time pop—to arrive at Future Nostalgia. Decadent and every bit as empowering as those early hits, it brought Lipa her first Mercury Prize nod, multiple Grammy nominations and a rightful place in pop’s upper echelons. And with it, too, came Lipa’s new purpose. Released just as the world went into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis, Future Nostalgia became an urgent tonic for tough times—danced to in living rooms across the world. Yet Lipa wasn’t done there: Five months later, she unveiled Club Future Nostalgia, a thrilling remixed version on which the singer teamed up with club queen The Blessed Madonna, and guests including Madonna, Missy Elliott, Gwen Stefani and Mark Ronson, to bring lockdown-fatigued listeners another dose of escapism. “I didn’t think I’d be putting albums out during a global pandemic,” added Lipa. “But it’s just about creating experiences for everyone at home. That’s the most important thing for me now.”
All of this, of course, is only just the beginning. “I really feel like I’m finding my feet,” said Lipa. “I feel so proud of Future Nostalgia as a whole and the most confident and the most myself making it. But I’m already planning the next move.” - Apple Music

Hey it’s Dylan! I’m 17 and I’m from a small town in California called Loomis. I moved out to LA to work on my singing and that’s what I spend most of my days doing now ! I like to write out all of my thoughts in my lyric journal and my writing sessions are basically like therapy to me. I grew up a competitive dancer so if I’m not in the studio I’m probably dancing. In my free time I’m normally hanging with friends, riding ATVs with my brother, or planning my next trip back to the ranch in my hometown. U.K. drill MC Digga D spits gritty bars over low-end bass lines, trading in the dark, often violent lyrics associated with the genre. Digga D first emerged as part of West London crew 1011 before releasing a string of solo singles in 2017, including "Kill Confirmed," "Play for the Pagans," "No Hook," and "Next Up." The Metropolitan police launched a campaign to remove all of his videos in 2018, after they amassed significant views. This backfired, as Digga D fans re-uploaded them in multiple locations, leading to the police issuing a CBO (criminal behavior order) to the artist; this required him to screen all of his releases through the authorities, where they would not permit anything that incited violence against individuals or even certain areas of London. Singles that went through this process include "No Porkies," "Mad About Bars," and "Who?" Digga D was in and out of prison multiple times from 2017 to 2019; he was incarcerated during the release of his debut mixtape, Double Tap Diaries, in 2019. - Apple Music

The Norfolk DJ and producer behind a string of house-pop hits in the 2010s, Sigala makes music that’s irresistible due to its joy and exuberance. A lyricist through-and-through and staple of the U.K. underground, rapper Potter Payper built his career on candid reflections of the environment he was raised in. His sophomore mixtape, Training Day, took on an iconic role in the U.K. rap scene, compiling a cohesive and compelling collection of street-level narratives. Potter Payper (real name Jamel Bousbaa) was born and raised on the Gascoigne Estate in Barking, England, to an Algerian father and Irish mother. Though constantly embroiled in high-stakes street environment he found himself in, Payper worked on music in order to turn things around for himself and his family, so he began to develop his rap skills. His now-iconic lyricism and compelling wordplay were first showcased on his debut mixtape The Philosopher's Chrome, before the rapper caught the ears of the U.K. at large with his BL@CKBOX freestyle. His sophomore mixtape, Training Day, arrived in July 2013; often lauded as a modern classic of the U.K. rap scene, the project established the rapper's signature style, a blend of boisterous vocals, street narratives, and evocative production. In 2015, Payper dropped a third independent mixtape and an EP; while 24 saw him progress into the dominant sounds of trap, One Time (released via Grimey Limey) provided a more traditional seven-track set. The long-awaited sequel to Training Day arrived in 2016 with Training Day 2, which followed the first album's lyrical directions and classic-sounding beats. In 2018 the rapper's musical ambitions were cut short by a jail sentence: After releasing the mixtape Regina vs. Jamel Bousbaa, he found himself incarcerated while working on his sixth set, Real Back in Style. Born in Seattle, Washington in 1996, Dove Cameron grew up on nearby Bainbridge Island, where she first began acting in community theater at Bainbridge Performing Arts. Lil Tjay is stuck between two worlds. He grew up in the South Bronx, where the tradition of hustlers-turned-rappers is less a myth than an everyday reality. Born in 2001, though, Tjay was also deeply obsessed with the culture of the internet; his two favourite artists are Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne. This duality is his greatest strength. The MC, born Tione Jayden Merritt, isn’t afraid to rap about both sides of his childhood. “I was just an innocent kid, but I still had that street view,” he explained to Apple Music. “I had that balance. Put a piano in front of Charlie Puth and the soul-pop crooner will come up with a hitmaking hook in a heartbeat. With her highly resonant voice and R&B-influenced style, Becky Hill first came to the public's attention competing on series one of The Voice UK. Ultimately reaching the show's semifinal round, Hill emerged a fan favorite and became the first Voice UK contestant to score a number one single when "Gecko (Overdrive)," her collaboration with Dutch EDM star Oliver Heldens, topped the U.K. singles chart in June 2014. Born on February 14, 1994 in Bewdley, Worcestershire, England, Hill was no stranger to music when she first auditioned for the then new The Voice UK in 2012. As a teenager, she had sung with the acoustic rock & soul group Shaking Trees, which created some local buzz and received several plays on BBC Radio. On The Voice UK she made it to the semifinal with her powerful renditions of R&B songs by the likes of John Legend and others, before being eliminated. By her own admission, she was a novice in the music industry game and it took her 18 months to finally get a record deal. In the meantime, however, her sultry, soulful, older-than-her-years voice was highly sought-after by dance artists looking for feature vocalists. Her first recorded appearance, on British drum'n'bass artist Wilkinson's single "Afterglow," went to number eight on the U.K. singles chart. She then appeared on Rudimental's single "Powerless," singing with them at several U.K. festivals in 2013, including Glastonbury. Following her success with Heldens, Hill worked extensively with London-based dance producer MNEK and issued her debut solo single, "Caution to the Wind." It showcased a shift toward a more electronica-influenced sound, with twinkling melodies and production reminiscent of Four Tet. The Eko EP appeared in 2017, and included the single "Unpredictable." What happens when two producers who live and breathe pop and dance music set aside the digital bells and MIDI whistles and sit down at the piano first? That’s what Christian Karlsson, aka Bloodshy, and Linus Eklöw, aka Style of Eye, ask themselves every time they hit the studio as Galantis. Since 2013, the Swedish duo has crafted some of the most unforgettable songs in dance pop, and they’ve done it by turning the usual equation—make a beat, then graft a melody on top—on its head. That Digga D song is tragic x (@ Dan it is a little different to his usual stuff, the hook is him badly singing over the chorus of 50 Cent's '21 Questions'. I'd honestly prefer him to stick to the aggressive drill songs about stabbing/shooting people if this is what his attempt at versatility sounds like).

According to legend, Glass Animals chose their name by picking two words out of the dictionary at random—but you couldn’t come up with a better combination for a group that toes the line between the pristine and primal. On their 2014 debut, Zaba, the Oxford quartet aligned themselves with a storied lineage of abstract alt-rock—the moody atmospheres of Radiohead, the tropical textures of Animal Collective—but in Dave Bayley, Glass Animals possess an uncommonly smooth singer who could mould those left-field influences into sultry, R&B-flavoured pop songs. While the album made them indie darlings, it also earned the group admirers beyond the typical NME reader—the 2015 single “Lose Control” saw them team up with Brooklyn MC Joey Bada$$ for a trippy rap track. That sense of anything-goes openness fully flourished on 2016’s How to Be a Human Being, whose procession of freaky, funky anthems and synth-smeared slow jams earned Glass Animals their first Mercury Prize nomination. But after drummer Joe Seaward was nearly killed in a 2018 cycling accident, Glass Animals dialled down the eccentricity for 2020’s Dreamland, a more intimate record that further harmonized the art-rock/club-pop dialectic at the heart of their music. Speaking about the single “Your Love (Déjà Vu)” to Apple Music, Hayley said, “The idea was to take my favourite '90s producers like Timbaland and The Neptunes and the way they used samples, yet record a lot of those sounds in the way The Beatles or Beach Boys might’ve done it... and then taking Beatles and Beach Boys sounds and resampling them as [those producers] might’ve done.” That Dreamland cracked the Top 10 in both the UK and US is a testament to Glass Animals’ gift for melding different styles and eras into the sound of now. - Apple Music

In an interview with Apple Music about her 2018 debut Camila, Camila Cabello told a story about a conversation she had at a Grammy party. It was a guy—a famous guy, a celebrity. “A flirtationship,” she called it. Calum Scott
Calum Scott honed his huge, honeyed pipes singing other people’s songs, but he didn’t fully find his voice until he began creating his own intimate pop vignettes. In a 2019 interview with Apple Music, Harry Styles shared a memory from the early days of One Direction. They were in the studio in Sweden working on “What Makes You Beautiful”. First single, the rollercoaster train just starting to climb the track. Someone comes into the room and says there are a couple of girls outside. Why? the band asks. They’re looking for you guys. For One Direction. “And we’re all just like, ‘But we’re in Sweden!’”

Born Melissa Jefferson in 1988, she grew up between Detroit and Houston, making her way through the Minneapolis indie community in her early twenties. She worked steadily through the 2010s, forging a confident, outsized blend of gospel, R&B, hip-hop and pop before breaking through with 2019’s Cuz I Love You. She could be funny (“I just took a DNA test/Turns out I’m 100% that bitch,” she raps at the beginning of “Truth Hurts”), vulnerable (“Cuz I Love You”), quirky (“Batches & Cookies”) and empowering (“Juice”). In every case, though, her music brings a muchness, a saturated sense of vibrancy and humour and soul and self-assuredness that just kinda makes you feel good. I’m calling it now… Joseph will successfully retain the trophy for Member of the Year for a second year running due to nobody else coming close to his level of commitment, enthusiasm and friendliness on BuzzJack! Rightly so too and it was an honour for me to just be a fellow nominee alongside him last time but the right person won and I hope he wins again!
