This day will go down in history not only because Mariah finally got to number one. Number one on the sales chart 'Live It Up' by Mental As Anything is nowhere to be found on the official singles chart. It's the first time ever the best selling single of the week failed to make the official top 100.

QUOTE(Joulupukki @ Dec 10 2020, 04:31 PM) *
For the first time ever, the most-purchased eligible single of the week fails to appear anywhere on the published chart, the 3,375 downloaded sales of 1987 hit Live It Up by Mental As Anything barely half those required to register on the official Top 100.

I do wonder how much longer the download chart will be a thing. I mean, they don't produce a physical singles chart, because no-one releases CD singles anymore...I know downloads are slightly different, as I can imagine that paid downloads will always be a thing, but I can only imagine how few downloads you need to make the top 100.

....I had no idea this was still a thing! I know that only chart geeks will really care, but I would be interested to know how many CD singles someone has to sell to reach #1, or even to make the chart at all!

I know some local bands who have got high up there before, IIRC it's more sales than you'd think. (the vast majority being vinyl singles of course)

Why would a random song from 1987 be the best selling song of the week in 2020? w00t.gif

Think it was a campaign by Rangers FC fans.

'Blood Bank' is an EP that is too short for the album chart rather than just a single so I guess that partly explains its longevity, but still rather impressive that it has continued trickle selling in physical form (even if it's literally 1 or 2 copies per week) so consistently for over a decade laugh.gif

It's mostly 7" singles now.. and at the top end some weeks it's probably getting close to download numbers! Single digit sales at the lower end though I imagine.

Thanks for the info! Honestly, it makes no sense to me that they still publish top 100 physical singles and at the same time only top 40 for vinyl albums. I wonder how long before they cut the physical chart down to top 40 only. Maybe they havn't done it so far because this chart has very long history and used to be the official chart for many years but surely it will happen someday. No one will publish full top 100 where you only need 2 copies to chart.

The number 100 surely has none of 0 sales, likely in alphabetical order by that part of the chart

1 physical sale between #60 and #70...crazy. It makes me want to release a CD single just to get myself in the chart! laugh.gif
