Joseph's Hit 250: Year-End 2017

Click the banner above to visit my end-of-year countdown!

Chart Commentary

In a close-run battle, Lily Allen claims this week's #1 with her midweek release of new single Trigger Bang, meaning PRETTYMUCH remain at #2 for a second week with No More. Trigger Bang is Lily's fourth #1 hit, and first in over three and a half years when Our Time debuted at the top. Lily's first #1 was True Love with P!nk in 2013, before she achieved a five-week #1 of her own with Hard Out Here later that year, keeping her own track Somewhere Only We Know at #2 for four of those weeks. Trigger Bang features Giggs, who scores his first chart appearance.

Lily Allen
2013 01 True Love (P!nk feat. Lily Allen) | FEAT | 1-2-3-4-7-8-14-23-32-37-X (10 weeks)

2014 17 As Long As I Got You | PS | 17-25-33-X (3 weeks)

Giggs
2017 01 Trigger Bang (Lily Allen feat. Giggs) | FEAT | 1-... (1+ weeks)

Climbing once again, Still Want UUU becomes Zak Abel's third top 10 hit. It's only his third chart hit too, all achieved this year, so he currently has a 100% top 10 record in my chart. Still Want UUU is still his lowest peaking track, behind Unstable (#4) and All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) (#5), but it makes a neat pattern right now of his first three chart hits going 4-5-6 *_*

Zak Abel
2017 04 Unstable | 1 | 10-4-9-10-14-19-26-31-37-X (9 weeks)
2017 05 All I Ever Do (Is Say Goodbye) | 2 | 5-10-17-30-X-21-X (5 non-consecutive weeks)
2017 06 Still Want UUU | 3 | 28-13-6-... (3+ weeks)

One of the more random new entries of recent times, British singer/songwriter Nerina Pallot returns to my chart after a five-year absence. Rousseau is a single from her 2015 album The Sound and the Fury, which I hadn't heard until recently. I heard it when out and about (in Wilko specifically x), and Shazam'd it. I was surprised to learn it was Nerina, as I'd been quite a fan of hers in the past but she'd dropped off my radar! A couple of her older songs impacted my early charts (when I compiled only a top 10/20). Real Late Starter peaked at #7, while Turn Me On Again made #12. Rousseau matches the peak of Real Late Starter, tying for her highest position.

Nerina Pallot
2012 07 Real Late Starter | 1 | 9-7-X (2 weeks)
2012 12 Turn Me On Again | 2 | 12-18-16-X (3 weeks)
2017 07 Rousseau | 2 | 7-... (1+ weeks)

S Club 7 are one of my favourite bands of all-time. I grew up listening to their music - Sunshine was the first album I owned and Have You Ever was the first single. I was obsessed as a young kid, with their music and their TV shows. I'd go as far as to say they shaped my entire music taste, developing my love of pop music from such a young age. I finally saw them live at their reunion tour in 2015 and it was the best night of live music that I've ever experienced. Naturally, any hint of new music will have me intrigued at the very least. For several years now, S Club 3 (Jo, Bradley and Tina) have been performing at many events, although I've not seen them. I never thought they'd bring out new material, but here comes Family. The song is written by Simon Ellis, who wrote tracks such as Don't Stop Movin', Two in a Million and Never Had a Dream Come True for the group, and is a release for charity.

I must admit, my expectations were low, and it's clear why - the budget can't be high, and four of the seven members that make up the group I grew up with have vanished. I'd have hated for something awful to taint their incredible discography. Thankfully, Family doesn't do that. Whilst it's far from being an S Club 7 classic, it's a pleasant song with a lovely sentiment. Jo in particular sounds phenomenal as she always does, and Tina actually delivers a good middle 8 *.* Its #8 debut gives S Club a third top 10 hit - the previous two being Don't Stop Movin' after the live tour, and Rain, a previously unreleased track that was included on their 2015 greatest hits re-issue.

S Club 7
2014 14 S Club Party | 2 | 19-14-16-24-31-X (5 weeks)
2014 05 Don't Stop Movin' | 1 | 26-28-22-21-27-20-12-19-27-30-27-36-X-5-21-X (14 non-consecutive weeks)
2014 38 Let Me Sleep (S Club) | AT | 38-X (1 week)
2014 32 Stand By You | AT | 32-38-X (2 weeks)
2015 02 Rain | AT | 2-2-4-5-14-34-X (6 weeks)
2015 12 Reach | 1 | 12-36-X
2015 24 Bring It All Back | 1 | 24-X (1 week)
2015 29 Alive (S Club) | 1 | 29-X (1 week)
2015 31 You | 3 | 31-X (1 week)
2015 33 Never Had a Dream Come True | 3 | 33-X (1 week)
2017 09 Family (SC3 (S Club 3)) | NAS | 9-... (1+ weeks)

The final new song in this week's top 10 comes from upcoming Scottish singer/songwriter Lewis Capaldi. Lost On You is his first chart hit, and it's this week's highest climber, rocketing up 16 places to be his first top 10 hit at #10. Its parent EP, Bloom, debuts at #6 in the album chart this week. Tom Grennan also achieves a new personal best this week, as Found What I've Been Looking For vaults up 12 places to #23.

Christmas #1: The Contenders

Next week will be the reveal of my chart's Christmas #1, so let's take a look at the contenders!

At this point, it seems that there are six possible contenders in next week's chart. We're only one day into the new chart week so far, so I've got no idea who will end up as my next #1 and it really is wide open at the moment!

The last time Lily Allen returned with new material, she hogged the top two for four consecutive weeks (and the #1 spot for a fifth week too), so Trigger Bang is a likely candidate to reign at #1 again next week. However, it was a close battle for #1 this week with PRETTYMUCH after their video boost. Will next week finally be their time to clinch #1? Let's not rule out Zak Abel either, his momentum has been huge so far and a jump to #1 wouldn't be difficult for next Friday.

Mariah Carey returned to her #3 peak this week, which she first achieved last year. Each year, she's achieved a brand new peak, but this year it's harder than ever as Mariah needs to be at least #2 to accomplish that. Will All I Want For Christmas Is You finally make my top spot?

As far as new releases go, the big two contenders seem to be chart veterans Anne-Marie and Reed Deming. Anne-Marie has two #1s to her name - Rockabye and Heavy, plus the monster #2 hit Ciao Adios, so her new single Then is off to a brilliant start. Reed Deming also has two #1s to his name, with Crash Test Dummy (Broken) and Satellites, although both were three years ago now. However, Reed's maintained a string of hits since then, with Cry Wolf making #7 earlier this year. Can he finally reclaim the top spot with new single Lonely Kids?

Hey Joseph!

Lily Allen #1 ohmy.gif I've heard Trigger Bang a few times, maybe it'll grow on me a bit more into the New Year

S Club 3?!?! Wasn't expecting that I'll have to check it out later

Great for Jax Jones, Pink, Alan Walker, RAYE, Camila & Sam Feldt to be Top 20 heart.gif

Never Be The Same debuting at #19 wub.gif It's not as good as Havana, but it's a brilliant follow-up single that will hopefully give her another hit in a few weeks time

Mary J Blige has done some great Christmas songs, I prefer When You Wish Upon a Star (feat. Barbra Streisand and Chris Botti) to the Jessie J collab though kink.gif

Great chart!

Hello Joseph!
I think "Trigger Bang" was decent, but not as great as her earlier stuff.
The new debut for Camila is great too, but not as good as "Havana.
And it's nice that Declan McKenna's albumn is your #1.
Also I've heard the new Anne-Marie track, I love it from the first listen!
I'm excited for your christmas chart right now!
Great chart overall!
