love that oh, be clever song, and i've heard that new pornographers track thru youtube adverts that i then investigated!! looks really solid

the CDSWAP i've got No Matter How I Look At It, It's You Guy's Fault This Music Isn't Popular, which i think is probably iz after a skim listen of all tracks (could be wrong ofc but guitar music and the glorious baba yetu to start it off!) i don't think it's gonna be my thing but i am objective about everything (or try to be!)

I got "Amène-moi très très loin" and from a cursory first dip it really isn't my thing but I will listen properly and review it later.

QUOTE(مدهش* @ Sep 9 2014, 09:25 PM) *

Somewhere In Between What You Wanted and What You Didn't Want

Firstly... for once there is absolutely no concept to this CD, I usually spend ages trying to make something really cohesive but this time I thought I'd just throw a few noises that I've been listening to a lot of late and hope that at least some of them would suit whoever received it. Kinda gutted in a way 'cause I'm sure you'd have got my more concept styled ones but pleased that you did indeed appear to find some things that you loved. And that you didn't already know them all, this forum seems to know every new song around these days so getting discoveries is kinda tough. Ha at the cover size though, no wonder my uploads always seem kinda big.

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

■■■■■■■■■■ one
An artist whose voice is quite in right now. Don't really find the song memorable but it's okay I guess.
Layla - Smokestacks - is this fair to say it's kinda Florence-lite? I like the stop start and build/fade nature of it, it's one of those tracks I've been almost sending to BJSC for about the past six months.

■■■■■■■■■■ two
Too punky and guitary for my liking. I like guitars but not when there's no hook or interesting twists or something like that bye
The New Pornographers - War On The East Coast - I had such an obsession with their earlier albums that I've been listening to their most recent one quite a lot for nostalgia if nothing else. Kinda the same era as Metric/Stars etc I guess, the band reminds me of a time when triangles used to listen to anything Canadian.

■■■■■■■■■■ three
omg this is a really kewl song. The way it started got me hooked straight away. Even the melody's repetitiveness isn't a problem. The mid section with strings is absolutely stunning! Such contrast between different types of instruments and melodies. Perfection.
Sailor & I - Tough Love [M A N I K Summer Skeleton Mix] - I almost sent this to BJSC instead of Turn Around the other month... I love this mix, although I edited it a bit to fit in here, it's one of those cases where practically all of the other mixes of a track are all like really cool or whatever but nobody actually seemed to pay attention to the best one!

■■■■■■■■■■ four
Caribou - Our Love <3 The new album is gorgeous, including this song. Back Home >>>> tho
Caribou - Our Love - as you so rightly say... I love this, haven't listened to the rest of the album yet but the way this explodes (or maybe not explodes, maybe more quietly combusts?) in the second half of the track is just lush.

■■■■■■■■■■ five
woah, this is so good as well. The production is so on point and very now for me. While not being as experimental as track 3, I think it still conveys the same feeling and vibe.
Azekel - New Romance - So pleased you like this! It's one of the most underrated tracks of the year for me, don't see why this wasn't massive at least on the blogs?

■■■■■■■■■■ six
Very Owen Pallett-esque which is great because Owen is f***ing amazing. Melodic and emotional song that comes across very subtle and really gives you the multidimensional feeling, like you're going to find/hear something new each time you listen to it.
Douglas Dare - Repeat - Also very glad you liked this one... I wanted to send this to something eventually, his album earlier this year is really one of the best of the year but seems to have gone by without a sole paying attention. Indeed, the track isn't even on youtube so y'all have a live version instead. Geek love.

■■■■■■■■■■ seven
I really don't know how to describe the song. It's just random vocals done in a way I really dislike, layed onto a track that isn't very appealing or interesting.
Jim-E Stack - Reassuring - downloaded this the other week. Thought it may sound good after the Douglas Dare track to continue the piano thing but introduce some beats etc. Plus the last sound was the first sound of the next track so I couldn't resist including it.

■■■■■■■■■■ eight
Don't know who's singing this but this is a Sean Paul - Breathe cover. Only with a more 'now' sound. It's okay I guess bye
Years & Years - Breathe - just love these and they make a song I hated really quite tolerable. One of the new bands of the year? Thinking so. Plus people always seem to like cover versions in these cdswap things so I wanted to include one!

■■■■■■■■■■ nine
I really don't know. It just faded into the background for me.
Blood Cultures vs Missy Elliott - Sock It 2 Summer - Awwww, shame you didn't like this. It's one of those instances where a mash up just sounds like it was always the original track to me.

■■■■■■■■■■ ten
Some French realness. Doesn't help the case though as it's pretty boring and blah.
Poom - Les Voiles - I was going to say that this was kinda like a French Daft Punk. But I guess that doesn't quite work. Maybe they're like an even more French Daft Punk? Okay? No?

■■■■■■■■■■ eleven
Started very blah but got much better towards the end. The whole thing sounds very complex and production is rather good. It's the vocals that do it for me. Or rather do NOT do it for me.
John Hancock - Left Me - I have such a soft spot for miserable music. And this is miserable music masquerading as cheery music. Plus I don't know if the guy in the video is actually him or not but he is just such an unlikely musician that I just gotta love him.

■■■■■■■■■■ twelve
Happy clappy happy realness. very st tropez. bright colours. very st tropez. The backing track is good but those amateurish vocals (although i like the voice) bye
Feist - I Feel It All [Escort Mix] - how can you not know this? or call Feist amateurish? bye indeed ohmy.gif

■■■■■■■■■■ thirteen
I think I know this one but don't know where from. Me likey tho. Very upbeat and fun.
O'Death - Bugs - can't even remember now how I heard this one either but agree it's pretty upbeat and fun. We're kinda firmly into the section of the cd for happy folk. Should they exist on Buzzjack?

■■■■■■■■■■ fourteen
Scream tastic female rocky realness. Nothing against rock chixxx but no
Oh, Be Clever - Tosh - more cheeriness. This kinda reminds me of a more poppy Yeah Yeah Yeahs maybe? Again, not on youtube so everyone can have another live acoustic version from the equivalent of good morning with Philip and Fern. Or Holly. Or whoever does those shows these days.

■■■■■■■■■■ fifteen
Middle eastern instrumental realness. Very kewl.
Ratatat - Bare Feast - Obsessing over ratatat again of late. Although not this album really so not sure why I chose this one. Anyway, glad you likeee.

■■■■■■■■■■ sixteen
Gives off such a kewl vibe. I usually love that lo-fi-ish 'i dunnae curr' sound and this time ain't no exception bye
Temples - Sun Structures - this is so not what I'd normally listen to but I've kinda fallen for their album. It's just so authentic sounding that it's difficult to resist, really does sound soooo old.

■■■■■■■■■■ seventeen
Yeah no one really cares about you, girl. If only there were less of those run-of-the-mill vocalists like this bitch. She just makes the entire song so boring and BLEUGHHGIIEHGHHGHGHH even though I'm liking the music and the sound a lot.
Ultraísta - Smalltalk - I wanted to include the Four Tet mix but it didn't fit within the timescale. Not sure whether you'd have preferred it or not but I've linked that version instead so you can find out... probably shoulda stuck with it maybe?

■■■■■■■■■■ eighteen
Another instrumental. I feel like this one could really use some dramatic vocals. Although the music is already dramatic enough so I think it'll work either way tbh. Doesn't push the envelope too much though, which is what I notice and appreciate the most in songs.
Maybeshewill - Critical Distance - I think this group are really quite epic, or dramatic I guess as you say. Everything of theirs is pretty much like this, all sort of more rocky M83 style instrumentals. Thought I'd include it in case you know it went to someone in here who actually likes those guitar things instead of these new found keyboard noises.

■■■■■■■■■■ nineteen
Woah this is very pleasant. Strings. Really nice and simple. Nothing extraordinary and try-hard.
Rufus Wainwright - Albatross - My darling Rufus! I never include him on anything which is odd considering he was my avatar for like years and years. I think this one is simply beautiful, it's a cover of an old Judy Collins track from some obscure compilation.

■■■■■■■■■■ twenty
I'd close the album with track 19 tbh. A bit of calmness and then some string drama realness to close for the night. I feel like this song relies too much on vocals which in a way I don't like. A bit too simple of a track as well.
Broken Twin - The Aching - back to sombre piano music then, my comfort zone at times. Again, this one's only included because I've been listening to her album quite a lot of late. It's a late night kinda thing, relaxes me as it reminds me of the music my parents used to listen to when I lived back at home. Not that you need to know that but still.

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

135/200
■■■■■■■■■■

Yay I think? Is that good? It's not awful at least so I'll take that.

■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

I know someone who would love to get a copy of this compilation.

Looks like my CD has landed in good hands!

Whoever made 'A Bit Of Your Time' can expect a review hopefully toward the end of the month once BJSC's finished. I did a quick scan and it sounds very promising!

Just to break the drought, here's my review:

dance by yourself: a review

There's an album art of some cushions in black and white, I can see it's semblence with the theme.

All the tracks had been re-titled to various pleas which read like an outpouring of grief and cry out for the affections of a lover. I was sensing it would be quite a sad CD from this, but it appears that wasn't the case and it was, as my initial assumption from the title, filled with dance of varying moods but not often really sad so I couldn't really detect a story/theme in any of the lyrics or connections, but I think this may be a personal set of songs, the composer's even titled 'teardrops at 3am' which is lovely. I'm intrigued to know the intentions of the CD maker with this one.

Onto the music:

take me away - This was a good start, I was worried when it opened with the air raid sound which usually signals some awful rap song, but this wasn’t - it was really quite an infectious little song, the slightly distorted vocals and calmed singing fitted in well with the dance breakdown. Proved to be one of the highlights 9/10
make me forget what I don’t remember - Another great one, female vocal with a synthy keyboard backing and a very, very catchy chorus about ‘taking our hearts aside’, the backing/chorus reminds me of something, a bit like the Scatman John song? Just me? Never mind, another good one 9/10
give me somewhere to go when I feel lost - This is another good one, female vocals, synths, keyboard, breakdowns etc. much like the one above, in fact almost exactly like the one above so much that it felt like deja vu, it doesn’t help that it’s almost seven minutes long and gets repetitive after a while, it’s good I just can’t really appreciate it as much coming after the one above 7/10
know me when no one else does This one has slightly more of a rave/disco-ey feel to it. There are no vocals except ‘ee’ until halfway through the track with ‘I want you in my life’, which I guess is what the song is called. Despite the length, seven minutes again, I liked the instrumental and this one definitely felt standout enough to be a standout. 8/10
love me when no else will This has a bit more of an urban-electro feel to it and relies more on the vocals, which is good for the most part 8/10
hold me when no one else can This has a distinct ‘deep house’, ‘underground’ feel to it, very subtle production and quite airy, for want of a better word, vocals. Again, nothing life-changing, but still pretty good 8/10
make me numb when the pain is too much This is yet another long, synthy dance song with looped vocals, after hearing a lot of songs on this CD do it better, this is just kinda there. 6/10
revive me when I flatline - OK, getting a bit extreme with the titles now. This one was slightly different from the others on the CD because it had deep male vocals, for what I believe is the first time on the CD. The production is slightly subtle with lyrics about watching the sunrise, I feel if it was a bit more beefed up, it could easily be an Avicii song and be a number 1 smash. Not that I’d want it to as its fine as it is. 7/10
make everything feel ok even when it’s not - This one didn’t make much of an impact on me, the only thing that made this stand out was the slightly deeper toned beats that sound a little bit like Oliver Heldens’ Gecko. 5/10
be simple when I’m confused - A lot of this CD sounds familiar but this one definitely is - it’s Everything But The Girl - Missing, a classic ofc., but I don’t think this one is the one I’m familiar with, the only thing the same is the vocals, the production is much more active and there’s a very pitchy synth breakdown to accompany the thumping piano. I really liked it nonetheless. I was just starting to tune out and this was what I needed. This is notable though in being quite a bit more sad than the other quite positive tracks, which all seemed to point towards a theme of wanting someone and being in love, the choice of track here presents something a bit more moody 9/10
make my problems temporary - I was about to find out that this was sandwiched between two dance classics in new remixed form, so I think this may be meant to be one too, but I don’t recognise it very much. It’s not exactly different to most of this CD and I’ve ran out of appropriate vocabulary to describe these songs. 6/10
let me feel like being alone… - Clue’s in the title to what this is, it’s Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone, but hang on, this is very different. Mainly in the sense it’s been slowed down massively, cut to just the title line, occasionally distorted and the vocals are sung by a male that seems to be doing his best impression of the original singer, literally every sound is enunciated in exactly the same way! I love what’s going on in the background, but the vocal style really grates. A shame. 6/10
…isn’t so lonely - And finishing on another dance classic in remixed form, Roger Sanchez - Another Chance this time. The vocals are thankfully the same, the remixed form just seems a bit more of a snazzy, uptempo breakdown than the original’s subtle synths, nothing to notable but not bad. I sense the last few classics on here had a theme of loneliness, getting over it and getting another chance, I really liked the sequence as it sort of summed up the 'story' quite well. 7/10

Overall: 7/5/10 This was a very good CD and one that definitely grew with repeated listens, with some real gems on there that I grew to like. Musically, it did start to get a bit repetitive towards the end and that's a reason why it's a lower score, I mean I love dance and all, but even I could say this was getting a bit repetitive! It's just my personal preference to have a variety of music on CDs like this so I would have enjoyed it more if it had shifted genres sometimes.

I thought instantly this was Thermo's after listening as I don't think anyone else is quite a dance fan as he is, but the lack of capitals in the title, the quite 'deep' theme and titles and the general genre lead me to think it could be Leww's? I'm sure it's one of you two anyway, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's a BIG dance fan as there's definitely something you'll like here.

review
first of all thank you chez wombat for such a nice review! and of course well done for guessing it was me. fantastical melodrama and an affinity for dance music is absolutely my thing. the disc is completely self-indulgent, so it was nice to see that you did take something good from it. interesting that you take the titles from a literal standpoint of someone outpouring to a lover - i made the disc late at night in pitch blackness on a night where i felt especially lonely, and realised that in that mood i reached for the most energetic and cathartic songs i could find. it was a dedication to music as a whole. i find a lot of emotion within dance music because in my head, i'm away somewhere else - moving through the moves and feeling so familiar in a sound that feels homely to me. thats why i picked songs that were either remixes, samples or interpolations - it meant that you felt like you knew where you were with each song even if you didn't. the titles reflect how much of an importance music has on my life, and how i use it even in my most escapist states where i just need to be somewhere else.

notes
--- the album artwork is an inverted image of a motion blurred picture of my face, superimposed onto my pillow and my duvet.
--- 002 + 003 are remixed by the same artist, hence the similarity - well picked up on!
--- 011 samples whitney houston 'it's not right but it's okay'.

Erm yes I'd love to listen to that.

(actually I'm already listening)

Interesting that you want music like that if you're feeling lonely - I just wouldn't be able to enjoy it in that sorta mood!

That's a very deep and interesting concept and I didn't find it self-indulgent! I find it very interesting when people channel their own emotions into their music, it's a bit like art really. It's like finding out something about them. Certainly it was a theme I didn't expect, had they been titled normally I wouldn't have guessed there was a theme at all!

Like I said, there were some really good tracks on there and nothing particularly bad so thanks very much, Leww biggrin.gif I really should've noticed Kelis on there. That Whitney version was odd, I wouldn't have guessed that at all and I've heard that track a lot!

(and whilst I'm here, you did my BJSC PM right? ph34r.gif )
