There's so much I love about this. 1. The bassline is so simple but infectious, and instantly recognisable to anyone that followed music in the late 90's. 2. The fact it's totally instrumental just shows how you don't need vocals to make a hit. 3. The video is unique, humourous, and effective. 4. The simplicity of the song works in its favour, just so addictive. 5. It's literally just a looped bassline yet managed to hit #1, how strange is that? 6. Genuinely just an amazing track We need more music like this in the charts. Opinions? |

Well it was only #1 because of the Flat Eric ad but still, a song doesn't get to #1 through mass publicity alone, amazing something like this actually took to the public & it sold a f***ton too iirc?

The week this entered the chart with 284,000 copies in week 1, System F debuted at 14 with “Out Of The Blue” and Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker” was new at 16. Both of those are FAR better IMO!

sold upwards of 270k first week(!!!) iirc, wasn't there at the time but the advert/video/song combination must've been the reason for it having such an impact.
I do like this a fair bit myself, it's a fun track - though going a bit too far to call it one of the best of all time personally. Also I'm going to merge this with the Dance Classics thread, as that's what it should be used for. |

'The Vengabus' is a bit of a choon tbh
I don't go back to 'Witch Doctor' though, it's a bit too novelty for me. I'd actually say 'Flat Beat' is my fave in that top 10, though we have two great non-dance songs entering as well in 'You Get What You Give' and 'No Scrubs'. |

You Get What You Give, along with Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer were definitely the two I remember most from 1998. I think my parents were listening to adult contemporary radio stations as there was loads of other jangle pop/alternative I remember being played on the radio in the late 90s like Don't Marry Her by The Beautiful South and Breakfast At Tiffany's by Deep Blue Something. For dance I remember Ultra Nate 'Free' and Horny 98' - the first one I did like but the second was too rude for me to appreciate at the time. Witch Doctor was from the time it was popular to do Eurodance versions of country songs, see also 5,6,7,8 by Steps. This is my favourite 90s dance track I think, just amazing! Featuring Vincent Covello (who isn't credited on this video).
Also one of the first vocal trance songs to become a hit in the UK (#28 in September 1995 and #14 in February 1996) I would love the likes of Jonas Blue to do something like this today (he has had similar soulful male singers on a few of his records). Following the unfortunate news of Marie Fredriksson of Roxette's death, I recommend this lesser known track of theirs, a Clubland classic with Dancing DJs which lifted from their 1991 track.
